Everly M. Wheeler
1933-2016
Everly M. Wheeler, of Staffordsville, shared his life with us for 83 years and 20 days. He went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville.
Everly was born on April 8, 1933 at his beloved Crockett in Morgan County. He is the son of the late Frank and Linnie Fannin Wheeler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Arlis, Darrell and Rodney; and three sisters, Arlene Williams, Mavis Hall and Lois Brown.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lillian Arnett Wheeler of Staffordsville. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, friends; and two special caregivers, Geraldine Owens and Debbie Preston.
For the past four months, Everly enjoyed time shared at Mountain Nursing Home with the roommate Eldon McKenzie.
After high school, Everly served two years in the U.S. Army. He then enrolled at Morehead State University obtaining a B. S. Degree in business education. His long teaching career began in Johnson County at Oil Springs High School before retirement from Johnson Central.
While at M. S. U., Everly met and married his future wife, Lillian Arnett. They were married on June 8, 1958.
Everly had a kind, gentle and helpful nature. He loved his family without reservation and was always proud of their accomplishment.
After retirement, Everly enjoyed meeting friends at the Senior Citizens Center, sharing a good meal and enjoying games of choice. He also never gave up on the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon fishing on the lake.
Everly has left a void in our hearts that can never be filled. He will be missed by all who knew him. His life had been a great journey, beginning with his parents, his career, and his loving wife Lillian.
He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and his community, but Everly will never be forgotten.

Genevieve McCarty
1932-2016
Funeral services were held Sunday, May 1, 11 a.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Genevieve McCarty, 83, of Oil Springs who passed away Thursday, April 28 at her residence.
Mrs. McCarty was born July 11, 1932 in Johnson County, daughter of the late Walter and Emma Blanton Curtis. She was a hairdresser. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Long and Elouise Curtis; and one great-great-grandchild, Darrick Ryan Haywood.
Surviving are her husband, Jimmie Dorton McCarty of Oil Springs; two daughters, Jewell (Sam) Reed, and Wanda Jean (James) Preston, all of Oil Springs; one brother, Walter (Pam) Curtis Jr. of Tutor Key; one sister, Edith Carol (Ray) McCarty of Oil Springs; one brother-in-law, Knawha Long; four grandchildren, Dianna (Bobby) Reed, James Darrick (Donna) Preston, Laura (Shawn) Castle, and Guthrey Dwayne (Andi) Preston; 11 great-grandchildren, Joshua (Emily) Reed, Ashley Paige (Kyle) Sublett, Whitney Bleue (Mason) Haywood, Jimmy Preston, Jordan Young, Alex Castle, Nick Castle, Rebecca Preston, Lauren Preston, Alaina Castle, and Dylan Preston; three great-great-grandchildren, Austin Haywood Mykah Reed and Kyleigh Paige Sublett.
The service was officiated by Elders Frankie Blevins and Ray McCarty, with burial in the Jimmie D, and Genevieve McCarty Family cemetery at Oil Springs.

Debra Lynn Johnson
1955-2016
Funeral services were held Friday, April 29, 2 p.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel for Debra Lynn Johnson, 60, of Shelbyville, who passed away Tuesday, April 26 at Hosparus Inpatient Care Center in Louisville.
Mrs. Johnson was born Nov. 26, 1955 in Johnson County, daughter of Gene Davis and Anna Potter Davis, both of Thelma. She was a Human Resource Manager.
Surviving in addition to her parents are her husband, David Lane of Shelbyville; two brothers, Gene Davis of Nashville, and Paul Davis of Richmond; one sister, Jeannie Swant of Manchester, Tenn.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The service was officiated by Jim Wheeler, with burial in the Highland Memorial Park cemetery at Staffordsville.
Arrangements under the direction of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Claude Edward Hayes
1927-2016
Claude Edward Hayes was born Dec. 25, 1927, to Jessie and Gus Hayes in Paintsville. He had 14 siblings, of whom he was close to and very fond of.
He was known as a child to collect creatures and things that he loved in his pockets for show to his siblings and friends.
Claude married Billie Hensley in June of 1952 and the odyssey of his legacy began. The love and compassion Claude had for his children is indisputable. He supported his children through their sports events, maturation into jobs, marriages and raising their own children.
James is fond of his father’s attendance to his basketball games. Tom recalls him encouraging his hard work. Claudia remembers the day that her father tokened her the number one girl. Claude made many trips from Ohio to California to spend time with Gene. Mandy “his baby girl” recalls his talent in singing and how he would dance with a booty shake. He enjoyed gun shows and collecting knives. Claude had a way of interjecting silliness into conversations with his facial expressions. Each of Claude’s grandchildren share “Pappawisms”. These memories of one liners bring wisdom and humor.
Andy shares the bluest eyes with Pappaw. Jackie recalls his cure for the ultimate hangover, and having home remedies for almost any ailment. Reneé shares how special she felt when Pappaw would take his grandkids to the candy store for $2 worth of candy. Erika recalls him loving a good deal and sharing the Doublemint gum that he carried in this shirt pocket. Bradley recalls Pappaw giving dating advice, he told Bradley to “be sure to always carry a pack of gum or pack of cigarettes, because the ladies would want one or the other.” Leesa recalls his simplistic diet of bologna, cucumbers and tomatoes and how when she eats the same she is comforted with his memory. Josh recalls Pappaw’s infinite wisdom and not accepting change easily.
Claude has a unique place in the hearts of those who knew him, loved him and he will missed indefinitely.

Roberta Preston
1927-2016
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 5, 11 a.m. at the Third Street Free Will Baptist Church for Roberta Preston, 88, of West Van Lear, who passed away Sunday, May 1 at Mountain Manor in Paintsville.
Burial was in the Johnson County Memorial cemetery at Staffordsville.
Arrangements under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Rebecca Franklin Wells
1947-2016
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 18, 1 p.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel for Rebecca Franklin Wells, 68, of Paintsville, who passed away Tuesday, June 14 at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.
Mrs. Wells was born July 19, 1947 in Johnson County, daughter of the late Everett and Bertha Davis Franklin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Denver Lee Wells; and two brothers, James Marion Franklin and Thomas Edward Franklin.
Surviving are two daughters, Terri (Tony) Profitt and Tammy (Michael) Wright, both of Paintsville; one brother, Carl Michael Franklin of Tennessee; and two grandchildren, Donovan Wright and Sydnee Profitt.
Visitation will be Thursday, 5-9 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel.
The service will be officiated by Larry Blair, with burial to follow in the Franklin Family cemetery in Paintsville.
Arrangements under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Helen Hyden Hughes
1929-2016
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 17, 11 a.m. at the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel for Helen Hyden Hughes, 86, of East Point, who passed away Tuesday, June 14 at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.
Burial will be in the Hughes Family cemetery at East Point.
Arrangements under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home of Paintsville.

Opal Melvin
1927-2016
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 14, 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Paintsville, for Opal Melvin, 89, of Paintsville, who passed away Saturday, June 11 at her residence.
Mrs. Melvin was born Jan. 21, 1927 in Johnson County, daughter of the late Walter and Stella Hampton Williams. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles T. Melvin (2006); one brother, Bill R. Williams; and one sister, Ruby Lyons.
Surviving are one daughter, Kim (Mike) Lauffer of Paintsville; one son, Charles T. “Chuck” II (Anna) Melvin of Paintsville; six grandchildren, Seth, Will, Clara, Emily, Ty and Mickey; and 13 great-grandchildren, Gracie, Max, Addison, Carter, Anderson, Kate, Reese, William, Wes, Zac, Alexandria, Ava, and Maggie.
The service will be officiated by Bruce Lee, with burial in the Mayo cemetery in Paintsville.
Arrangements under the direction of the Phelps & Son Funeral Home Chapel of Paintsville.
