Brenda McNamara Medlin

Brenda Kay McNamara Medlin, 43, of Gray, and the wife of Wiley Medlin, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002 at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington. A native of Barbourville, she was a daughter of Hester Rose McNamara and the late James McNamara. She attended Candle Ridge Baptist Church and was a former employee of Cracker Barrel. A sister, Carolyn Warren and her father-and mother-in-law, Fred and Eula Medlin of Gray, preceded her in death. In addition to her husband and mother, survivors include sons and daughters: Joshua Keith Medlin, Gray; Wiley Jack Medlin, Gray; Shaunna Zaqulee Medlin, Gray; Gina Rae Kwratkouski, Elizabethtown; Andrea Lynn Storms, London; Robert (Bobby) Leland Medlin, Gray; grandchildren: Nicholas Gene Medlin, Alexandrea Lauren Kwratkouski, Gabriel Timothy Kwratkouski, Brett Alan Storms, Robert Bradley McCrystal Medlin; four sisters and their husbands: Joyce and Terry Mills, Barbourville; Barbara and David Bays, Barbourville; Teresa and Clifton Hays, Rockhold; Linda and Arthur Tye, Barbourville; a brother, Terry McNamara of Barbourville; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the O'Neil Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sam Moore officiating. Burial was in the Helton Cemetery at Gray, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Visitation was from 6 until 9 p.m. Saturday at O'Neil Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Helton Cemetery Fund.

Freda S. Jones

Mrs. Freda S. Jones, 87, of Barbourville, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Mollie Benge Thomas, born on June 26, 1915 in Clay County. She was a retired cook from KCEOC and a member of Callihan Baptist Church. In 1936, she united in marriage with Oscar Shelton, who passed away in 1946. In 1947, she united in marriage with Lewis C. Jones, who passed away on Dec. 10, 1980. She is survived by nine children, Ruby Lawson and husband Ernie of Mobile, Ala.; Vergie Bane and husband Bob of Batesville, Ind.; Ruth Barett Hudson and husband Robert of Griffin, Ga.; Audrey Johnson and husband Dale of Barbourville; Kenneth Jones and wife Carolyn of Barbourville; Randall Jones and wife Brenda of Calhoun, Ga., Charles Jones and wife Betty of Georgetown; Wilma Buchanan of Barbourville and Sarah Cobb of Calhoun, Ga.; two sisters, Zada Kelly of Loraine, Texas and Bernice Harrison and husband Lincoln of Brookville, Ind.; one brother, Grover Thomas and wife Magdalene of Hamilton, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted in the Knox Funeral Home Chapel Thursday, July 25 with the Rev. Hurla Phillips and the Rev. David Barnard officiating. Burial was in Hutchins Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Knox Funeral Home.

Carolyn Grubb
Ms. Carolyn Grubb, 49, of Callebs Creek, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Owen and Eller Smith Grubb, born on Oct. 20, 1952 in Knox County. She was a member of the Dripping Springs Baptist Church. She is survived by three sisters, Tressie Bargo, Lorene Powell, Bonnie Jones and husband Abe and Maxine Jordan; three brothers, Percy Grubb and wife Eva, Belleville, Mich., M.J. Grubb and wife Rowena, and Paul Grubb, all of Callebs Creek; two sisters-in-law, Esceline Grubb of Scalf and Irene Campbell of Rockhold. Funeral services were conducted at her home at Callebs Creek, Sunday, July 28 with the Rev. Arvil Jones, the Rev. Columbus Hensley, the Rev. Ricky Broughton and the Rev. Tony Jackson officiating. Burial was in the Grubb Cemetery at Callebs Creek. Arangements were under the direction of Knox Funeral Home.<

Amos Mills
Amos Mills, 75, of Gray, was born on June 20, 1927 to the late John Will Mills and Nannie Mills at Stinking Creek. Mr. Mills passed away in the Corbin Nursing Home, Saturday, July 27, 2002. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Mr. Mills worked for the Chrysler Automobile Corporation before retiring. On December 20, 1948, he united in marriage to Maudie Swafford and to this union two dear children were born. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie, his daughter, Brenda S. Luker; sister, Evie Hensley; brother, H.T. Mills; sister-in-law, Martha Mills and brothers-in-law, Otis Swafford, Lester Broughton and Ted Stewart. Surviving Mr. Mills, his son, Rodney Mills and wife Wanda of Gray; his grandchildren, Steve and wife Nina, Chrissy and beloved companion, Jim, Shannon and Minda; a great grandson, Nolan Reilly; his son-in-law, Danny Luker of Centerline, Michigan; his sisters, Susie Mills of Stinking Creek, Sallie Broughton of the Turkey Creek Community, Axie Mills and husband Mark and Elizabeth Mills and husband Russell, all of Knox county, Kentucky; his brothers, Arnold Mills, Ralph Mills and wife Ruth and Carl Mills and wife Irene, all of Gray; his sisters-in-law, Letha Stewart of Manchester, Kentucky, Betty Sue Mills of Corbin, and Geneva Swafford of Manchester; his brothers-in-law, Hobart Swafford and wife Lizzie and John Hubbard Jr. and wife Idie, all of Clay County, Kentucky. Funeral services for Amos Mills were conducted in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel, Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Garrett Garland and the Rev. Mark Mills officiating. Interment was in the Gray Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons: Steve Mills and Jim Gouin and family members, Pat Frederick, Leon Mills, Preston Mills and Toby Miller. Honorary pallbearers were all staff at Corbin Nursing Home and all staff at Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Vada Jones Smallwood
Mrs. Vada Jones Smallwood, 80, of London, the daughter of the late James and Jennie Elliott Jones, was born in Knox county on Jan. 19, 1922 and passed away in the Marymount Hospital in London on Sunday, July 28, 2002. Mrs. Smallwood was a member of the Knox Fork Pentecostal Church and a homemaker. On Dec. 14, 1940, she united in marriage with Charlie Smallwood and nine children were born. She is survived by four daughters, Genople Wiggins, Covington, Lola Adams and husband Gene, London, Brenda Yopp and husband Louis, Paducah and Wilma Smallwood, London; three sons, Ronnie Smallwood and wife Gayeda, London, Ben Smallwood, Hamilton, Ohio and Ray Smallwood and wife Freda, Independence; eleven grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, July 31, with the Rev. Johnny Benge officiating. Interment was in the Hale Cemetery on Robinson Creek. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Lucille Henson
Mrs. Lucille (Harris) Henson, 78, of Barbourville, the daughter of the late Lewis and Nancy Harris, was born in Harlan County and passed away Friday, July 26, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. She was a member of the Smokey Creek Holiness Church, now known as New Harvest Tabernacle. She was an employee of Union College. She is survived by her husband, Daw Henson Jr., Barbourville; two daughters, Janice Bohart and husband Jerry, Parkers Lake and Betty Jo Napier, Barbourville; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Funeral services were conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel Monday, July 29 with the Rev. Don Napier and the Rev. Curtis Taylor officiating. Interment was in Tanyard Cemetery on Smokey. Hampton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Louise Combs
Louise Combs, 92, of Barbourvile, passed away Monday, July 22, 2002 at the Pineville Community Hospital . She was born in Lebanon on May 8, 1910, a daughter of the lat Eddie Lee and Ida Lee Inman Lynch. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Barbourville. She had been a Bell county clerk. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Services were held Wednesday, July 24 at the Arnett & Steele Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles F. Jones and the Rev. Jerome Stern. Roxie Disney Ohe Robertson, 59, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and formerly of Barbourville, Ky, passed away Sunday, Nov. 17., 2002 at her home. She was a daughter of the late William and Grace Taylor Disney, born to them on March 12, 1943 at Kenvir in Harlan County, Ky. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Kensie Imogene Cotterill and two brothers, Jack Morgan Disney and James Cozella Disney. She is survived by her husband, Wayne Robertson of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sons, John Ohe and wife Wilma of Oneida, Ky. and George Bruce Ohe and wife Diane of Milford, Ohio; two daughters, Sherry Lucas and husband Steve of Florence, Ky. and Mary Omega Smith and husband Tony of Cincinnati, Ohio; two special nephews, Robbie Striet and Eric Striet, both of Paducah, Ky.; thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren; five brothers, Johnny B. Disney and wife Virginia of Barbourville, Frank Disney and wife Wanda of Corbin, Ky., William Disney Jr. and wife Marizic of Marengo, Ill., Joe Charles Disney and wife Bobbie of Chatsworth, Ga. and Walter Ray Disney and wife Crystal of Barbourville; five sisters, Druecella Madden, wife of the late Richard Madden of Jonesville, Va., Mary Striet and husband Jim of Paducah, Ky., Martha Omega Reeves of Barbourville and Barbara Stinnett and husband Brian of Chatsworth, Ga. and also a great host of nieces and nephews to mourn her passing. David Hiram "D.H." Woolum
Mr. David Hiram "D.H." Woolum, 84, of Little Brush Creek, was born Aug. 4, 1918 and passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at his home. He was a son of the late Thomas Woolum and Nellie (Varno) Woolum. He was a member and deacon of Coalport House of Prayer. In 1939, he united in marriage with Ruby France and 12 children were born. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Woolum of Little Brush Creek; three daughters, Priscilla Saunders of Walker Park, Nellie Houston of Miamisburg, Ohio, Ellen Bundy of Somerset; nine sons, David Woolum Jr. and wife Patricia, Charles Woolum, James Woolum and wife Betty, all of Artemus, Joseph Woolum and wife Judy of Barbourville, Terry Woolum and wife Mary of Walker Park, Robert Woolum and wife Tina of Vermillion, Ill., Richard Woolum and wife Marie of Tallapoosa, Ga., Keith Woolum and wife Dana of Artemus, Eric Woolum and wife Latisha of Calhoun, Ga.; two brothers, Thomas Woolum and wife Stella of Flint, Mich. and Clark Woolum and wife Diane of North Carolina; twenty-six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Grace Smith Hines
Grace Smith Hines, of Middletown, Ohio, formerly of Barbourville, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at Willow Knoll Retirement Community. She was a daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret (Jackson) Swafford. She attended the Church of God. She was preceded in death by her first husband G. Harrison Smith in 1962; her second husband James Hines in 1981. She is survived by her sons Elbert (Charlene) Smith of Ft. Payne, Ala. and Thomas (Nancy) Smith of Middletown; daughters, Barbara (George) Lewis of West Liberty and Rhonda (Arnold) Fugate of Madison Township; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren. Services were held Monday, Nov. 25, 2002 at Wilson-Schramm Spaudling Funeral Home with the Rev. Robbie Conn officiating. Burial was in St. Johns Cemetery in Trenton. Cledith (Payne) Miller
Mrs. Cledith (Payne) Miller, 92, of Flat Lick, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 in Pineville Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Eliza (Epperson) Payne and the wife of the late Smith Miller. She was a member of the Concord Baptist Church and a retired Knox County teacher. She is survived by two sisters, Hazel Lawson of Cheviat, Ohio and Helen Cole and husband Everett of West Chester, Ohio; six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Services were conducted in Hampton Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002 with the Rev. Larry Sowders officiating. Burial was in the Barbourville Cemetery. Minnie Mills Gambrel
Mrs. Minnie Mills Gambrel, 90, of Flat Lick, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. She was a daughter of the late William and Post Bargo Mills and the wife of the late McKinley Gambrel. She was a homemaker and former cook at Flat Lick Elementary School and a member of Concord Baptist Church at Flat Lick. She is survived by her children, S. B. Gambrel and wife Stella of Flat Lick, Jack Gambrel and wife Joyce of Danville, Paul Gambrel and wife Cordie of Flat Lick, Imogene Cassidy of Knoxville, Tenn. and Evelyn Jackson and husband Ray of Lovingston, Va.; two sisters, Viola and Sue; five brothers, Les, Loman, Bill, Eugene and McArthur Mills; 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted in Knox Funeral Home Chapel Saturday, Nov. 23 with the Rev. Larry Sowders and the Rev. James Polly officiating. Burial was in the Amis-Bargo Cemetery at Flat Lick. Alice Marie Miles
Alice Marie Miles, 49, of Newcastle, Del., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2002 in the Christiana Hospital in Delaware. She believed in the Baptist faith and worked as a nurses aide and a nanny. She is survived by her parents, Kenneth and Evelyn Miles of Stigler, Okla.; two daughters, Evelyn Gifford and husband D.J. of Cincinnati, Ohio, Teresa Newsome and husband Steve of Covington; two sisters, Jean Bramlage and husband Dave of Independence, Veronica Davis and husband Terry of Stigler, Okla.; two brothers, Charles Miles and wife Tammy of Independence, Jerry Miles and wife Jennifer of Covington; five grandchildren. Services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002 in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Miles and the Rev. Duke Hammons officiating. Burial was in Miles Cemetery at Swan Lake. Mr. Robert J. Young, 55, of Hinkle, the son of the late Raymond and Gladys Smith Young, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 in the Knox County Hospital. He believed in the Baptist faith and was a farmer. He is survived by his wife Brenda of Hinkle; one daughter, Bobbie and husband Steve of Corbin; two sons, Michael Young and Darlene of Poplar Creek, Greg Young, also of Poplar Creek; two sisters, Pearl Young of Oneida, Tenn., Shirley Young of South Carolina; four brothers, Ronald Young of South Carolina, Eugene Young and wife Ethel of Artemus, Jamie Young of South Carolina and Bill of Oneida, Tenn.; six grandchildren. William Kendall "Chopper" Miller
Mr. William Kendall "Chopper" Miller, 30, of Artemus, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 in the Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville. He was the son of Amanda (Abner) Miller and the late Bill Tom Miller and the husband of the late Dolly Rebecca Miller. He was a member of the House of Prayer at Trosper. He is survived by his mother, Amanda Miller of Artemus; mother-in-law, Judy Wagers of Roaring Fork; sisters-in-law, Marie Jones and husband Richard of Barbourville, Wilma Garrison and husband Billy of Woolum. Services were conducted in Hampton Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday, Nov. 26 with the Rev. Brian Hacker, the Rev. John Ingle and the Rev. Denvil Taylor officiating. Mrs. Florence (Jones) Logan Frazier, 82, of Artemus, Ky., passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2002 in Knox County Hospital. She was a daughter of the late Frank and Erie Jones and the widow of Newt Frazier. She was a member of the the Warren Missonary Baptist Church and had owned and operated Frazier's Grocery Store at Warren. She is survived by her sister, Gencie Grant. Funeral services were conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 with the Rev. Arnold Petrey officiating. Burial was in the Barbourville Cemetery. Elsie Miller Rhodes
Elsie Miller Rhodes, 91, formerly of the Davis Bend community, Barbourville, a daughter of the late Willis Miller and Verdi Marsee Miller, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 in the Bishop-Davies Nursing Center in Hurst, Texas. She was a member of the Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at Davis Bend. Her husband, Dalton preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, Lowell Rhodes of Silver City, N.M.; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Rhodes of Barbourville; her sisters, Ada Shelbourne of Louisville, Lucille Sturdivant and husband Bob of Independence, Ima Mays of Artemus, Margaret Adkins and husband Cecil of Amhurst, Ohio and Mary Elizabeth Fortney and husband Dan of Dayton, Ohio; her brothers, Stanley Miller and wife Doris of Hubbs Creek, Gerald Lee Miller and wife Bonnie of Corbin and Larry Miller and wife Joyce of Artemus; three sisters-in-law, Katherine, Francine and Amanda Miller.
