ELLA STEELE

Ella Steele, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004 at Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born Jan. 19, 1923 in Mercer County, she was a daughter of the late Stallard “Doc” and Ora Mae Claunch Bailey.

She was a retired Cricketeer employee and also had worked at several restaurants in Harrodsburg including Appletree, Stone Manor, Ball Park and Ann’s. She was a member of Pioneer Baptist Church.

Survivors include: two sons, Jimmy Steele of Louisville and Willard “Butch” Steele, Jr. of Harrodsburg; two daughters, Trudy Treadway and Mary Jennette, both of Lexington; one twin sister, Gertrude Gray of Harrodsburg; two half brothers, Danny Bailey and Bobby Bailey, both of Harrodsburg; 10 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Hattie Pearl Semones, Lettie Adams, Iva Norvel and Louise McMillan.

The funeral was conducted Wednesday Aug. 18 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Rev. Tony A. Hancock and Rev. Donavon Burton officitaing. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tony Gray, Mark and Chad Steele, Billy and Kevin Treadway and Chuck Jennette.

Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Clarence Steele and Bobby and Danny Bailey.

JAMES BAKER

James E. Baker, 75, Battle Road, Mackville, husband of Mildred Votaw Baker, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born March 20, 1929 in Washington County, he was a son of the late Willie and Myrtle Moore Baker.

He was a farmer.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: two sons, Jerry Wayne Baker and James Edwin (Pat) Baker, both of Mackville; two brothers, Buddy Baker of Corinth and Cecil Baker of Harrodsburg; five sisters, Mildred Johns and Ruby Havens, both of Dayton, OH, Ann Baker and Junita Campbell, both of St. Louis, MO, and Irene Casey of Atlanta, GA; one nephew, Ronnie Sexton of Harrodsburg; two nieces, Bonnie Sexton of NY and Angie Rice of GA, and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ada Sexton and Christine Hackman.

The funeral was held Thursday, Aug. 19 at the Carey and Son Funeral Home in Springfield with Bro. Raymond Castillo of Burkesville officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Willisburg.

Pallbearers were Junior and Ricky Baker, Terry Brown, Juan Campos, Greg Grant and Brad Saunders.

FRANKIE BOWMAN

Frankie Bowman, 75, East Water St., Burgin, widow of William Morris Bowman, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 28, 1928 in Burgin, she was a daughter of the late Warner and Dora Mary Agnes Boggs Bartleson.

She was a retired employee of Hall-Mack and Leggett Meyers. She was a faithful member of the Little Zion Baptist Church where she was active in the choir and on the kitchen committee. She was a senior companion for the Mercer County Senior Citizen Center. She was a member of the Loyal Benevolent Society, Eastern Star and the Kentucky Club. She loved flowers, cooking, yard work and taking care of her family.

Survivors include: six daughters, Patricia Jones and Joan (Paul) Williams, both of Louisville, Debra (Don) Thomas, Rhonda Bess, Priscilla Dale Bryant and Wanda Craycraft, all of Burgin; three sons, James (Linda) Dunn and Gregory Bowman, both of Burgin, and Ronald (Sharon) Bowman of Harrodsburg; one brother, Cecil (Mary) Bartleson of Burgin; one sister, Mary Garner of Lexington; several sisters- and brothers-in-law; 15 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Truman Bartleson and one sister, Bessie Pope.

The funeral was held Wednesday, Aug. 25 at the Little Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Phillip A. Yates officiating. Burial was in the Robinson Roe Cemetery in Burgin.

Pallbearers were Norman, Randall and Charles Bartleson and Truman Bartleson Jr., Paul Williams, Pierre Smith, Alvin White and Ronnie Cloyd.

Honorary pallbearers were Derrick Jones, Jermaine, Justin, Daricoe and Davron Bowman and Paul Williams Jr.

Arrangements were handled by Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home.

MARGARET CHILTON

Margaret Chilton, 90, East Lexington Street, widow of Kellis Chilton, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004 at the James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital Extended Care Facility.

Born March 10, 1914 in Harrodsburg, she was the daughter of the late Howard A. and Willie A. Coslow Dean.

She was a former employee at Graves Jewelers and at the Ft. Harrod Museum. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Chapter # 309 Order of Eastern Star where she was a past matron. She was a past president of the Harrodsburg Women’s Club. She was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church where she served as deacon and was a past president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship.

Survivors include: one son, Holly (Ann) Chilton; one grandson, Howard Chilton, and one granddaughter, Janet (Shane) Carey, all of Harrodsburg, and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Monday, Aug. 23 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel with Bro. Don Chase officiating. Burial was in the Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joe Blankenship, Garry Lance, George Neal Jr., Danny Chilton, Charles Bolling, Jr. and James Hogue.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Bethany Sunday School class.

Eastern Star Services were conducted Sunday evening at the chapel.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Harrodsburg Christian Church, 305 South Main Street, Harrodsburg, KY 40330.

J. T. EVANS

J. T. Evans, 82, Simpson Lane, Perryville, husband of Leota Taylor Evans, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born June 12, 1922 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Dence Edward and Victoria Upton Evans.

He was retired safety, transportation and communication director of the Kentucky State Hospital. He also was a former police officer in Danville and Harrodsburg and served as police chief of Perryville. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one son, Jerry Evans of Louisville; one daughter, Patricia Evans Casey of Parksville; one sister, Jewell Ballard of Harrodsburg; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 22 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Danville with Rev. Doug Wesley and Ernest Martin officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David and Charles Ballard, Jerry, Gary and Mark Taylor, Charles “Buck” Goode and Jamey and Evan Casey.

Honorary pallbearers were J.D. Westerfield and Mr. Evans’ Sunday School class.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Care Center, 1 St. Joseph Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.

JESSE MAY

Jesse R. "Rod" May, 76, Bowling Green, died Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 5:45 p.m. at the Medical Center.

He was born May 3, 1928 in Washington County and was a retired teacher for Warren County School System. He was an Army veteran, a graduate of Western Kentucky University and a member of Bowling Green Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Albert and Sarah Ellen Wilkerson May; a son John Albert May.

Survivors include his wife, Mary F. May of Bowling Green; a sister, Lois Fowler of Harrodsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 21.

Burial was in Peters Cemetery in Mackville.

PAUL MORFORD

Paul Morford, 66, 1592 Kennedy Bridge Rd., died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital.

Born Oct. 14, 1937 in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Raymond and Sadie Brown Morford.

He was a truck driver and was employed by Louisville Cartage for 12 years.

Survivors include: one son, Daniel Morford of Corydon, IN; three daughters, Natalie (Mark) Jackson and Michelle (Maurice) Morford, both of Frankfort, and Stephanie Morford of Louisville, and seven grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster with Rev. David Rayborn officiating. Burial was in Lancaster Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Phil Guynn, Maurice Walker, Christopher and Mark Jackson, Aaron Morford and Jim Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may take the form of donations to the American Heart Association, 2201 Regency Rd., Suite 401, Lexington KY 40503.

HAROLD SANDERS

Harold Wayne Sanders, 60, 4573 U.S. Hwy. 68, Ewing, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004 at the V.A. Medical Center in Lexington.

Born Aug. 14, 1944 in Kenton County, he was the son of the late Owen Nelson and Annabelle Royalty Sanders.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force sergeant after 23 years of service and had served in the Vietnam War. He enjoyed his Air Force career, especially his time in Alaska. He was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include: one son, Scott (Jerri) Sanders of Chesterfield, VA; one daughter, Cris (Tyrhen) Tigner of Fairbanks, AK; two brothers, Kenneth Eugene Sanders of Mercer County and R.C. Sanders of Palm Coast, FL; six sisters, Rebecca Gooch of Stanford, Joann Burton and Deborah Lynn Sadler, both of Mercer County, Frances Sanders, Peggy Burns, and Donna Louise Sanders, all of Harrodsburg; two grandchildren, Jesse Tigner and Jacob Laurence Tigner, both of Fairbanks, AK.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Wanda Wolcott.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. at Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville with military rites. Bro. Kenneth Preston will be officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are being handled by the Ransdell Funeral Chapel.

WILLIAM SIMPSON

William J. “Billy” Simpson, 54, Cloverdale Drive, widower of Stella Ann West Simpson, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 at his residence.

Born Jan. 7, 1950 in Mercer County, he was the son of Effie Breeding Simpson of Harrodsburg and the late Marshall Jr. Simpson.

He was an auto-body repairman. He was a member of the Cornishville Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, U.K. sports, and NASCAR.

Survivors include: three sons, Travis Lynn Simpson and William Scott Followell, both of Harrodsburg, and Darrell (Linda) Followell of Burgin; three brothers, Ronnie Simpson, Stevie Simpson and Jeff Simpson, all of Harrodsburg, three sisters, Betty Murphy and Charlotte Lane, both of Harrodsburg, and Joyce Hill of Danville; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Junior Wayne Simpson.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, Aug. 21 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Bro. Jack Geurin officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jerry Bugg, Tommy Darland, Howard West, Stevie Releford, Jonathan Devine, Chris Baker and Wayne and James Tracy.
