KENNY RICHARDS
Kenny Duane Richards, 18, of Liberty, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007 in Washington County.

He was the son of Derek Richards and Sandra Norris of Springfield, and Christine Helen May and Jeffrey Harmon of Liberty.

In addition to his parents, survivors include: one sister, Laken Michelle (Michael) Coleman of Eubank, and maternal grandmother Charlotte Mary May of Waynesburg.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Eugene May, and his paternal grandparents, Kenneth and Gay Richards.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the W. L. Pruitt Funeral Home in Moreland with Bro. Michael Mullins officiating. Burial was in Pilot Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bobby Todd Richards; Alex and Dale Blevins; Lee Ferrell, and Jeff, Tommy and Derek Harmon.

Honorary pallbearers were Laura, Brian and Stephen May; Danny, Steve, Charlie and Tony Richards; Bucky Ferrell, and Roman Yoder.

WILLIAM VAUGHT

Rev. William Eugene Vaught, 83, of Solana Beach, Calif., formerly of Danville, son of the late Oliver and Lois Vaught, died Sept. 9, 2007, after a long illness.

Survivors include: two sisters, Helen Taylor of Louisville and Joan Cooper of Lexington; and two brothers, Paul Vaught of Somerset and Jere Vaught of Harrodsburg.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Elwyn Vaught.

Memorials may go to Gideons International.

DONALD BARNES

Donald H. Barnes, 61, of Harrodsburg, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2007 in Harrodsburg.

Born March 17, 1946 in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Frances Smith Barnes of Harrodsburg and the late Marvin Barnes.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a self-employed painter. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church, and he enjoyed fishing and being outdoors.

In addition to his mother, survivors include: three daughters, Patrice (Tracy) Goodlett, Stacy Murphy and Amanda Barnes, all of Harrodsburg; four sisters, Margaret Claunch, Virginia Edwards, Elizabeth Jean Votaw and Joyce Ann Devine, all of Harrodsburg, and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Donald H. “Bo” Barnes, and one brother, Denzil “Denny” Barnes.

Services will be held Friday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Chaplain Gary Story, Allen Whitenack and Genie Sims officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joe Curtsinger, Danny Curtsinger, Randy Curtsinger, Robbie Curtsinger, Bryan Springate, Denzil Claunch and John Claunch.

Visitation will be at the furnale home Thursday, 6-9 p.m., and Friday after 7 a.m.

RICHARD BEAN

Richard M. Bean, 88, died September 19, 2007.

A native of Louisville, he was the son of the late Richard M. and Rella Bourne Bean, and the husband of Audrey Annetts Bean.

He graduated from the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania, and was a major in the US Army Ordnance Corps in WW II. Richard moved to Lexington in 1945 and first worked for the Proctor and Gamble Company and then in the insurance and investment business until his retirement. He was involved with many charitable, church and civic organizations, and was a member of the Lexington Kiwanis Club, the SAR and the Bean Car Club of England.

He is survived by: Audrey, his wife of 63 years; a brother, Bourne Bean of St. Louis; four children, Richard (Martha) Bean of Louisville, Marian Bean of Harrodsburg, Kenneth (Margot) Bean of St. Louis, and Roger (DeeDee) Bean of Lexington; five grandchildren.

Interment services followed by an informal family visitation were held at the Walnut Hill Church on Saturday, September 22.

Memorials may take the form of a donation to the Richard Bean Scholarship or Alzheimer Disease Research Fund, C/O University of Kentucky, 343 Waller Ave, Suite 303, Lexington, KY 40504.

CHARLES GAUNTT
Charles Isaiah Gauntt, 27, of Moreland, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 in Danville.

Born Jan. 13, 1980 in Mt. Holly, NJ, he was the son of Robert Guy Gauntt of Michigan and Shirley Guarnieri Hickey of Harrodsburg, and was the husband of Shawna Nicole Bodner Gauntt.

He was a former construction worker and a loving husband and father.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include: one daughter, Elizabeth Saryn Gauntt; three brothers, Andrew Ray Gauntt, Cody Guy Gauntt and Mason Douglas Hickey, all of Harrodsburg; two sisters, Hilary Amelia Gauntt of Hustonville and Danielle Alicia Stratton of Harrodsburg; father and mother-in-law David and Connie Bodner of Moreland; maternal grandmother Teddy Jean Guarnieri of Burlington, NJ; maternal grandparents Charles and Evelyn Major of Conover, NC, and paternal grandmother Nancy Gauntt of Crab Orchard.

Services were held Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home in Danville. Burial was in Junction City Cemetery.

CHARLIE HUGHES SR.

Charlie Glenmore Hughes Sr., 90, of Lexington, formerly of Harrodsburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 at Samaritan Hospital in Lexington.

Born Feb. 4, 1917 in Kirksville, he was a son of the late Hiram and Nettie Mae Coy Hughes, and was the widower of Elizabeth Rose Cecil Hughes.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired CW04 in the Kentucky National Guard. He was a graduate of Bryan Station High School, was a retired machinist of Corning Glass Works in Harrodsburg, was a member of the Salvisa Masonic Lodge and was a retired antique dealer. He was a member of the Harrodsburg Christian Church.

Survivors include: two children, Charlie Glen (LaVece) Hughes of Nicholasville and Cecilia H. Grugin of Lexington; two sisters, Dorothy Lawwill of Middletown, OH, and Betty Dalton of New York; one brother, the Rev. W. Kenneth (Dottie) Hughes of Fairhope, AL; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Elizabeth Vice, and one brother, Hiram Buford Hughes.

Services will be held Friday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home (Main Street) in Lexington. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday, 5-8 p.m.

RUTH LAMB
Ruth Lamb, 72, of Harrodsburg, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007 at The James B. Haggin Memorial Hospital.

Born April 18, 1935 in Garrard County, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Laura Hensley Rector, and was the widow of Stanley Lamb.

She was a retired farmer, a Baptist and she enjoyed pets and canning.

Survivors include: two sons, Joe (Scottie) Alford of Harrodsburg and Tommy Deatherage of Florida; four daughters, Phyllis (Cash) Moore, Rita Phillips and Lois (Billy) Whittaker, all of Harrodsburg, and Teresa Angel of Arkansas; one brother, William Rector of Lexington; one sister, Sue Beasley of Tyrone; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, James Alford; one step-son, Stanley Lamb Jr.; two brothers, Johnnie and Eugene Rector, and one sister, Bernice Wiley.

Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with Allen Hensley officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Cash Moore II, Patrick Sims, Chris Goodlett, Billy Whittaker, Steve Riggs, Jeff Goodlett and Sean Angel.

EVA MEEKS
Eva Irene Meeks, 79, of Georgetown, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2007 at her home.

Born March 8, 1928 in Mercer County, she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Mary Bell Dennis Cummins, and was the wife of Leon G. Meeks.

She was a retired bookkeeper, a self-employed artist, and she enjoyed ceramics and sewing. She shared her talent of painting and art by teaching classes at the Scott County Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of the Meadowthorpe Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include: one daughter, Sherry G. Wright of Georgetown; two grandsons, Donald Gray Wright and Eric Wright, both of Lexington; one granddaughter, Jodi Gay Wright Perry of Hinesville, GA; five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edwin, Thomas and Lewis Cummins.

Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home with John Cummins and the Rev. Kathy Riley officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Donald Gray Wright, Eric Wright, Brett Bright, John Paul Cummins, Van Wiley and Joe Burgin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Cummins, Eddie Cummins, Thomas Lee Cummins, Wendell Grider, Andy Efthim, Jimmy Meeks, George Meeks, John Cummins, Paul Sturgill and Glenn Greathouse.

Visitation at the funeral home Wednesday, 5-9 p.m., and Thursday after 7 a.m.

ROBERT MURRAY
Robert Donald Murray, 73, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007 at Hospice of Lake Sumter, FL.

He was a native of Georgia, but spent his earlier years in Boyle County before joining the Navy and also lived in Louisville for several years. He retired from Al Packer Ford in West Palm Beach, FL, and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include: one daughter, Pamela (Gene) West of Marietta, GA; one brother, Edwin (Lill) Murray of Rotonda West, FL; one sister, Roberta (Bill) DeNardi of Louisville; one grandchild, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Lancaster Cemetery.

Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

KIMBERLY PETRO
Kimberly Mikez Petro, 40, died Sept. 22, 2007 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington.

Born Nov. 15, 1966 in Lexington, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Barbara Whittington Overstreet of Salvisa, and Raymond T. Lathrem Jr. of Lexington.

Survivors include: two sons, Joseph Adam Mikez III and Jacob Thomas Petro; four sisters, Kelly Whittington (Dann) Bates, Abby (Jackie) Sutherland, Marydale (Tim) Coleman and Nancy (Matt) Wall, and several other relatives.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Karyn Leigh Eades; maternal grandparents James Kelley and Mildred McPherson Whittington, and paternal grandparents, Raymond T. and Myrna Bentz Lathrem.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Kerr Brothers Funeral Home in Lexington with Pastor Carol Whiting officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery in Salvisa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care Center, c/o Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, KY 40504.

FRANKIE BAUGH

James Samuel “Frankie” Baugh, 69, formerly of Mercer County, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Gravelswitch, he was a son of Viola Baugh and the late Luther Baugh, and was the husband of Eva Mae Deshazer Baugh.

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force after serving 16 years. He later worked for Kaydon and Wal-Mart and was a member of the Sumter Baptist Temple.

In addition to his wife, survivers include: one son, Jerry Dale (Dea Anne) Baugh of Simpsonville; two daughters, Leta Louise Baugh (Greg) Ezzell of Meridian, MI, and Pamela Jean Baugh (John) Tallent of Sumter, FL; three brothers, Ronald Baugh, Paul Baugh and Melvin Baugh; three sisters, Ileen Jenkins, Linda Jenkins and Charlotte Baker, and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Adams and Carol Jenkins.

Services were held Friday, Sept. 21, at the Sumter Baptist Temple with the Rev. Eddie Richardson officiating. Burial was with full military honors in the Florence National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

RALPH CATON
Ralph Louis Caton, 81, of Perryville, died Monday in Danville. He was the husband of Barbara Cheatham Caton.

Born December 25, 1925, in Mercer County, he was a son of the late Arthur Johnston and Rilla May Dean Caton.

He was a retired employee of Corning Glass and Phillips Lighting, an Army veteran, a member of First Baptist Church in Danville, Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 28, Oleika Shrine Temple and American Legion, Battlefield Post No. 301.

Additional survivors include: two stepchildren, Dr. Linda Moody of California and Danny Moody of Dixville; a sister, Francis Elizabeth Caton Thurmond of Danville; a brother, Harold Brown Caton of Danville; a special cousin, Jane Fields; and a grandson, Jason Moody of Danville.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 3, at the Wilder Funeral Home in Perryville by Rev. John David Lane and Dr. Linda Moody. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery with military rites by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.

Nieces and nephews served as pallbearers.

Expressions of sympathy are suggested to the American Heart Association.

VIRGIL CLEMONS

Virgil Ray Clemons, 57, of Shelbyville died Wed., Sept. 26, 2007 in Versailles. He was the son of the late Mary Howard and Howard Clemons.

He was born June 29, 1950 in Breathitt County.

He was a farmer, a mechanic and formerly worked for the railroad. He was a member of the Lawrenceburg United Pentecostal Church.

He is survived by: a daughter, Angela Mae Clemons of IN; his fiancée, Lula Joyce Clemons-Downey of Versailles; adopted children, Jenna Faye Clemons, Aaron Ray Clemons, James Michael Clemons and Michael Dawn Osborne; a grandchild, Mackenzie Logan of Shelbyville; three sisters, Ann McGee of Harrodsburg, Nina (Edward) Buntain of Lawrenceburg, and Brenda Kay Davis of Willisburg; four brothers, Ervin Ray Clemons of Akron, IN, Melvin (LuAnn) Davis of Carrollton, Marvin (Leigh Ann) Davis of Rochester, IN, Rick Lee Davis of Harrodsburg.

Funeral services were held Sunday, September 30, at the Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home, Lawrencebug, with Rev. Michael R. Seidenfaden officiating. Burial was Monday, October 1, in Lawrenceburg Cemetery.

MARY COX
Mary A. Cox, 84, died Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.

Born July 26, 1923 in Cooksville, IL, she was the daughter of the late Beverly and Lillian (Grimes) Williams, and was the widow of Samuel Cox.

She was a graduate of Rose Hill High School and the Taylor’s Capital Beauty School of Frankfort. She was a licensed cosmetologist for 30 years. She also owned and operated the Talmage Store for many years. She was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church, a Kentucky Colonel, a former 4-H Leader in Anderson County, and served on the board of Mercer County Senior Citizens for several years.

Survivors include: one daughter, Cordelia (Vance) Reed of Harrodsburg; four grandchildren, Michelle Clem, Derrick Allen Drury, Julie (Wendell) Gooch, and Ashley (Shaun) Parker; one step-grandchild, Tracy Reed; six great- grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three children: Glenn A. Cox, Janet Sue Holbrook and Shirley Ann Drury, and one brother, Walter Carroll Williams.

Services were held Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Ransdell Funeral Chapel by John David Lane officiating. Burial was in the Corinth Cemetery, Lawrenceburg.

Pallbearers were George Hollbrook, David Drury, Ralph L. Anderson, Shaun Parker, Addam Gooch and Derrick Drury.

Honorary pallbearers were Vance Reed, Erika Drury, Jacob Drury, Abbey Rashelle Gooch, Allex G. Gooch, Logan Reed and Joshua Reed.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bohon Church of Christ or to the Mercer County Senior Citizens.

EDWIN FREEMAN
Edwin Freeman, 85, of Harrodsburg, died Saturday, Sept. 29, at his home after a long illness.

Born December 10, 1921, he was the eldest son of the late Wheeler and Dora Robinson Freeman of Harrodsburg and was the husband of Elsie Kirkland Freeman.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Ann Harriet (William) Dedman of Harrodsburg; a brother, Marshall (Anne) Freeman of Harrodsburg, a sister-in-law Martha Kirkland Davis; one grandson Milward (Kathy) Dedman of Harrodsburg; one granddaughter, Marie Hart (David) Rudder of Lexington; three great-grandchildren Ward Dedman, Cawood Dedman and Alex Rudder. He is also survived by two nieces and a great nephew.

He was preceded in death by his brother and business partner, R. C. Freeman.

Edwin served in the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1956-57 and 1962-63, was Mercer County Judge from 1966-1970 and Kentucky State Senator from 1970-74. He was chairman of the Mercer Co. Democratic Party in 1965 and was a Kentucky delegate to the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

He was a founding partner of Cole-Freeman Auction Co. in 1954 with offices in Lexington and Harrodsburg. He later became sole owner of Freeman Auction Co. and was proud to welcome his grandson, Milward Dedman, into the business which he renamed Freeman & Dedman Real Estate and Auction Co. He was a life member of Kentucky Auctioneers Association and received the W. P. Scully Auctioneer Award from the National Auctioneers Association.

In addition to his 53 year career in real estate, Edwin was owner of Freeman and Mercer Tobacco Warehouses in Harrodsburg and was a partner in Garrard Co. Stockyards and Burley Tobacco Warehouses in Danville and Freeman Bros. Tobacco Warehouses in Madison, FL. He also owned and operated cattle and tobacco farms in Mercer, Boyle, Casey and Green counties.

Edwin was the recipient of many awards including the Jaycees Recognition award for Public Service in 1969, Pioneer Award for Public Service from the City of Harrodsburg following his tenure as County Judge, Mercer Chamber of Commerce annual Harrods Award in 1991 and was named Fort Harrod Business and Professional Woman’s Club Boss of the Year in 1982 and 1997.

He was a life long member of the Harrodsburg Baptist Church were he taught the Glad Hand Sunday School Class for 35 years and was a 50 year director of the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation.

He was a Mason and a Shiner, long time member and past president of the Harrodsburg Lions Club, board member of Mercer Federal Savings and Loan, chairman of the board and majority stockholder of the Mercer Co. National Bank, member of the board of trustees of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, past president of Harrodsburg Tobacco Board of Trade.

Edwin had a life long love of road horses which he exhibited for many years. Along with his 2 brothers, he was inducted into the American Road Horse and Pony Association Hall of Fame during the World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville in 1986. They were also inducted into the Mercer Co. Fair and Horse Show Hall of Fame in 2003. Edwin was the only owner and amateur exhibitor to show and win both the Roadster to Wagon and Roadster to Bike World’s Grand Championship in the same year (1978) an honor which still stands today. Following an accident in the show ring in 1989, he was no longer able to drive himself but continued to enjoy attending horse shows and watching Milward drive family owned roadsters. He was a life member and past national president of the American Road Horse and Pony Association.

Edwin will be most remembered for his love of family, unwavering support and commitment to his community and church and for the countless lives he touched and encouraged throughout his distinguished life and career.

Services were held Monday, Oct. 1, at the Harrodsburg Baptist Church with Dr. Robert DeFoor officiating. (Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery)

Pallbearers were Bud Purdom, Jack Freeman, Bob Terhune, Sonny Hunt, Fred Rice, David Baker, Joe Stevens and Mark Hurst.

Honorary pallbearers were the Directors of the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation, Glad Hand Sunday School Class, Kenneth Kirkland, Eric Yeast, Louis Yeast, Lee Robinson, Ronnie Sims, Mark Evans, Kenneth Palmer, Tommy Claycomb, Bob Logsdon, Kirk Ogrosky and Woodie Leavell.

Memorials are suggested to the Harrodsburg Baptist Foundation or Heritage Hospice.
