James Pitts, former T-P photo editor
06/13/02

James "Jimmy" Pitts, a Mississippi native who started his career at The Times-Picayune as a copy boy and ended it as a photo editor, died Wednesday at Memorial Medical Center's Baptist Campus. He was 75.
Mr. Pitts was born in Carthage, Miss., and joined the newspaper's staff in the spring of 1948 after moving to New Orleans with his family.
"He soon started hanging out in the darkroom and learned the business," said Fritz Harsdorff, a former Times-Picayune associate editor. "A year later, he became an apprentice photographer, then a hell of a photographer."
An award-winning photographer, he preferred taking pictures of people and favored available light because, as Mr. Pitts once observed, "you get no background with flash."
In 1979, Mr. Pitts was promoted to photo editor.
Times-Picayune staff photographer Ellis Lucia, who was hired by Mr. Pitts in 1979, fondly remembers the irascible editor barking orders with a Muriel cigar lodged in his mouth -- an exterior that "belied a kind and gentle heart that he didn't want you to see."
Mr. Pitts was "very good with young photographers, very patient with them," recalled Vince Randazzo, a former Times-Picayune city editor and travel editor.
"Everyone liked Jimmy," said O.J. Valeton Jr., a former Times-Picayune wire news editor, night editor and copy editor. "He was hard-nosed but very fair, a key man in those days, the ‘60s and ‘70s, before computers."
And he remained so until he retired in the spring of 1990.
Pitts, an avid naturalist and voracious reader with a penchant for history, later moved with his wife, former Times-Picayune reporter Stella Martin Pitts, to Woodville, Miss. The couple co-authored two books on the history of Mississippi's Wilkinson County.
A graduate of Carthage High School, Mr. Pitts served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945. He attended Harding College in Searcy, Ark.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Thomas Pitts of New Orleans, and a daughter, Sara Elizabeth Jennings of Colorado.
