NORMAND, JULIA
November 18, 2002

Julia Normand, a retired nursing assistant, died Friday at Northshore Regional Medical Center in Slidell. She was 96. Ms. Normand was born in Hessmer and lived in New Orleans for the past 64 years. Survivors include three sons, Hilton, Nelson and Wade Normand; two daughters, Marria Madere and Mary Jane Keating; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 313 Westchester Place, Slidell. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at Schoen Funeral Home, 3808 Pontchartrain Drive, Slidell. Burial will be in Garden of Memories in Metairie.

PALERMO, ORA
November 18, 2002

Ora Palermo, a retired retail sales clerk, died Thursday at St. Tammany Hospital. She was 88. Mrs. Palermo was born in Dothan, Ala., lived in New Orleans and has lived in Bush for the past 17 years. Survivors include a son, Michael "Mac" McGuire; a daughter, Linda Faulstich of Dallas; two sisters, Jewell Stringer and Mary Ford; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp Funeral Home, 1600 N. Causeway Blvd. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Peter cemetery in Reserve.

SYLVE, HENRY JOSEPH SR.
November 18, 2002

Henry Joseph Sylve Sr., a retired operator with Daybrook Fishery, died Thursday of respiratory failure at Meadowcrest Hospital. He was 68. Mr. Sylve was a lifelong resident of Port Sulphur. Survivors include his companion, Enola Glover; three sons, Nathan, Patrick and Henry Sylve Jr.; a daughter, Jeanne Sylve; two brothers, Richard and Eddie Sylve Jr.; four sisters, Florence Theil, Frances St. Ann, Almena Sylve and Virginia Dinet; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A Mass will be said Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Louisiana 23, Port Sulphur. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Barthelemy cemetery in Diamond. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

TOBIAS, DOROTHY
November 18, 2002

Dorothy Tobias, a homemaker, died Oct. 25 at Park Haven Nursing Home in Ashtabula, Ohio. She was 95. Mrs. Tobias was born in St. Paul, Minn., and lived in New Orleans for more than 30 years before moving to Ashtabula. She graduated from Houston High School in Minnesota. She had been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in New Orleans. Survivors include nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held Nov. 2 at Lulu Falls cemetery in Kingsville, Ohio. Ducro Funeral Home in Ashtabula handled arrangements.

LAPARA, ROBERT MICHAEL
November 26, 2002

Robert Michael Lapara, a supervisor with Comtrol Services Corp., died Saturday of complications of leukemia at Chalmette Medical Center. He was 49. Mr. Lapara was born in New Orleans and lived in St. Bernard Parish for the past 40 years. He was an Air Force veteran. Survivors include three daughters, Mary and Jennifer Lapara and Amanda Blanchard; his mother, Doris Roux Lapara; a sister, Doris Dainello; and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held Monday at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Roch cemetery No. 2.

MENGE, CLARE VON HOVEN
November 26, 2002

Clare Von Hoven Menge, a homemaker, died Sunday at her home. She was 84. Mrs. Menge was born in New Orleans and lived in Chalmette for the past 50 years. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons Chapter 3688, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4706 Ladies Auxiliary, De La Ronde Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and past officer of the St. Bernard Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Survivors include three daughters, Iris Lee and Penny Ann Menge and Jennie M. Pinac; a brother, Charles E. Von Hoven; and five grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St. in Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.

BARROWS, THELMA LOUISE COLEMAN
November 25, 2002

Thelma Louise Coleman Barrows, a receptionist, died Wednesday at Lafon Home. She was 88. Mrs. Barrows was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She attended Dillard University. She was a past employee of New Orleans Speech and Hearing Clinic. She was a member of Greater Tulane Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board. Survivors include a son, Lyman H. Barrows; a daughter, Martis Barrows Bolt; and a grandchild. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Greater Tulane Baptist Church, 214 N. Johnson St. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. Tilly's Funeral Home handled arrangements.

SAUCIER, MARSHAL GEORGE
November 27, 2002

Marshal George Saucier, a retired salesman, died Sunday at his home. He was 80. Mr. Saucier was born in Mansura and lived in Metairie for the past 50 years. Survivors include four daughters, Linda S. Casse, Gwen Gasser, Susan Saucier and Jackie Marullo; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass will be said today at noon at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W. Causeway Approach, Mandeville. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. E.J. Fielding Funeral Home in Covington is in charge of arrangements.

SMITH, IVORY LEE JR.
November 28, 2002

Ivory Lee Smith Jr., a former equipment operator for the city of New Orleans, died Nov. 20 of heart failure at Memorial Medical Center. He was 32. Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a graduate of Joseph S. Clark Senior High School and attended Grambling State University and Delgado Community College. He was the recipient of the Father of the Year Award from the Urban League for two consecutive years. Survivors include a son, Ivory Lee Smith III; two daughters, TyRielle De'Jon and Indeya LeShawn Smith; his father, Ivory Lee Smith Sr.; his mother, Gwendolyn Brown Smith; two brothers, Eden and Blair Walter Smith; and his grandfather, Peter Walter Smith Sr. A funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, 2515 Franklin Ave. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Park. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HOGAN, CARMEN THIBODAUX
November 23, 2002

Carmen Thibodaux Hogan, a retired employee of the Rendezvous Restaurant in Maison Blanche, died Wednesday at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center. She was 89. Mrs. Hogan was born in New Orleans and lived in New Orleans and Metairie for the past 50 years. She was a parishioner at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church. Survivors include a son, Frank J. Hogan; a daughter, Frances Hogan Morris; two sisters, Eula Robichaux and Sherry Weaver; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at Hargrave Funeral Home, 1031 Victor II Blvd. in Morgan City. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. in Morgan City. Burial will be in the Morgan City cemetery. Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

VIGNES, MARIE LOUISE BUJOL
November 27, 2002

Marie Louise Bujol Vignes, a former sales associate, died Monday at Harvest Manor Nursing Home in Denham Springs. She was 80. Mrs. Vignes was born in New Orleans and lived in Baton Rouge for many years. Survivors include two sons, John and Mark Vignes; three daughters, Amy Eschette, Ann Kernerd and Jane Barrymore; a sister, Martha Grace; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held today at 9 a.m. at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East in Baton Rouge. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory cemetery in Baton Rouge.

VALTEAU, PAUL RAYMOND SR.
November 28, 2002

Paul Raymond Valteau Sr., a retired Postal Service employee, died Saturday of complications from Parkinson's disease at his home. He was 86. Mr. Valteau was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He worked for the Postal Service for 27 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a former scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Survivors include two sons, Edward L. Valteau and Paul R. Valteau Jr.; a daughter, Eileen V. Bernard; a brother, Albert A. Valteau; two sisters, Emily V. Degruy and Marie V. Neveu; and two grandchildren. A Mass will be said Friday at 9 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 5018 Constance St. Burial, in St. Vincent de Paul cemetery No. 2, will be private. Gertrude Geddes Willis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HINES, EMANUEL JAMES SR.
November 18, 2002

Emanuel James Hines Sr., a retired cook, died Wednesday of undetermined causes at Memorial Medical Center. He was 53. Mr. Hines was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He attended Booker T. Washington High School. He was a former merchant seaman and employee of the New Orleans Superdome. He was a member of St. Daniel Spiritual Church No. 1. Survivors include two sons, Emanuel James Hines Jr. and Desmond Harris; his mother, Gertrude Hines; a brother, Ezell Hines; a sister, Elaine Hymel; and nine grandchildren. A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Calvin J. Young Funeral Home, 2512 LaSalle St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Carrollton cemetery.

SIMON, NETTIE MAE
November 28, 2002

Nettie Mae Simon, a homemaker, died Tuesday of undetermined causes at Tulane University Hospital. She was 56. Mrs. Simon was born in Rose Hill, Miss., and lived in New Orleans for the past 40 years. She was a member of Holy Ghost Revival, Healing and Deliverance Temple. Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Simon Jr., and a sister, Barbara Roberts. A funeral will be held Friday at Davis Mortuary Service, 9200 I-10 Service Road. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Lake Lawn Park.

LONG, SUSAN HUMPHREY
November 23, 2002

Susan Humphrey Long, a homemaker, died Wednesday of lung cancer at her home. She was 45. Mrs. Long was born in Baton Rouge and lived in Madisonville for the past four years. Survivors include her husband, Marty Larry Long; her father, Millard F. Humphrey Jr.; her mother, Julia Brouillette Humphrey; a brother, Bobby Humphrey; and a sister, Paula Beagle. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave., Covington. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

BARROW, WAYNE 'WHEEZIE-WE'
November 28, 2002

Wayne "Wheezie-We" Barrow, a student at Alcee Fortier Senior High School, died Sunday at Charity Hospital of a gunshot wound. He was 17. Mr. Barrow was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. Survivors include his companion, Chelsea Chambliss; his father, Joseph Johnson; his mother, Selesta Barrow; a brother, Joseph Barrow; and three sisters, Ameika and Delbonique Barrow, and Joell Long. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Littlejohn's Funeral Home, 7818 Earhart Blvd. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery.
