BROUSSARD, DENWARD H. ‘ANIMAL'

Denward H. "Animal" Broussard, a carpenter, died Sunday of cancer at Chabert Hospital in Houma. He was 53. Mr. Broussard was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He was a member of Greater New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Survivors include his father, Ernest H. Broussard of Thibodaux; his stepmother, Eva M. Broussard of Thibodaux; two brothers, Huey P. and Mark A. Phillip, both of Thibodaux; and five sisters, Barbara Ann Smith Broussard of Minnesota, Clarice Hanzy Broussard of California, Golena T. B. Ward and Geneva Nora, both of Thibodaux, and Ethel M. Wallery. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at Greater New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 2002 Alabo St. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Kennedy Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES, VALLIE MAE
09/17/02

Vallie Mae Charles, a homemaker, died Thursday at West Jefferson Medical Center. She was 86. Mrs. Charles was born in Soso, Miss., and lived in Avondale for the past 34 years. She was a former member of St. John Divine Baptist Church and Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include a son, Frank Moffett Sr. of Camden, Del.; three sisters, Cassandra Amos of Laurel, Miss., Gertie Fox of Jackson, Miss., and Magnolia Henry; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. A wake and funeral will be held today at 8 p.m. at Second St. John Baptist Church, Avondale. Visitation will begin at 7 p.m. Dismissal will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Restlawn Park, Avondale. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SPRIGGENS, HILDA
09/13/02

Hilda Spriggens, a cook, died Wednesday of complications from hypertension at St. Claude General Hospital. She was 54. Ms. Spriggens was born in Napoleonville and lived in New Orleans for the past 40 years. She worked at the French Market Restaurant and Bar for more than 30 years. She was a member of St. James AME Church. Survivors include her companion, Robert Bradley; three sons, Mansell Spriggens Jr., Ricky T. Spriggens and Daniel Spriggens; a daughter, Anita Marie Spriggens; two brothers, Joseph Carsice of Compton, Calif., and Edward Joseph; two sisters, Ethel Mae Lawrence and Lois E. Charles; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James Methodist Church of Louisiana, 1925 Ursulines Ave. Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Littlejohn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

RUFFIN, JAMES LEE

James Lee Ruffin, a laborer, died Tuesday of cancer at St. Elizabeth's Caring. He was 39. Mr. Ruffin was born in New Orleans and lived in Westwego for the past 21 years. Survivors include his father, Clarence Ruffin Sr.; and five sisters, Irma Martin, Evelyn Chancellor and Shirley, Patricia and Bertha Ruffin. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Davis Mortuary, 6820 West Bank Expressway. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Christian Social Cemetery.

CARTER, LEONA AIKENS

Leona Aikens Carter, a homemaker, died Sept. 1 at Memorial Medical Center. She was 85. Mrs. Carter was born in Prairieville and lived in New Orleans for the past 70 years. She was a member of the Mid-City congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include two brothers, Simpson Aikens of Cleveland, Ohio, and Allen Aikens of Denver, Colo.; and three sisters, Dorothy A. Jackson and Marsha A. Butler, both of Baton Rouge, and Aline A. Steward. A memorial service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witnesses, 3100 Banks St. D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

RODNEY, LESTER J.

Lester J. Rodney, an assistant history professor at Clark-Atlanta University, died Thursday of a heart attack in Atlanta. He was 51. Mr. Rodney was born in New Orleans and lived in Stone Mountain, Ga., for the past 12 years. He graduated from Joseph S. Clark High School and received a bachelor's degree in business from Southern University at New Orleans, a master's degree in social sciences from Southern University in Baton Rouge and a doctorate in history from Atlanta University. He formerly worked for the Orleans Parish public schools and the U.S. Postal Service and was an assistant history professor at Morehouse College in Atlanta for 12 years. He was a Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of F.L. Stanton Elementary School Mentoring Partnership, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hunter Rodney; a son, Steven Joseph Rodney; a daughter, Ryan Charon Rodney; his father, Ulysses J. Rodney Sr. of New Orleans; his mother, Margaret M. Rodney of New Orleans; two brothers, James C. Turner of Tallahassee, Fla., and Ulysses J. Rodney Jr. of Milwaukee, Wis.; three sisters, Claudia Smith of New Orleans, Doreen Louise Rodney of New Jersey and Linda Jackson; and his grandmother, Claudia Lee Arceneaux of New Orleans. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Southern University at New Orleans Multi-Purpose Auditorium, 6400 Press Drive. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be Friday at noon in Port Hudson Military Cemetery in Zachary. Charbonnet-Labat Funeral Home handled arrangements.

TROXLER, ELIZABETH PUNCH

Elizabeth Punch Troxler, a homemaker, died Monday at Chateau de Notre Dame Nursing Home. She was 80. Mrs. Troxler was born in Lockport and lived in Metairie for the past 39 years. She was a graduate of Lockport High School. She worked for Maison Blanche for 10 years as a graphics specialist. Survivors include her husband, Creston R. Troxler Jr.; two sons, Joseph G. and Creston Rock Troxler III; a daughter, Maria T. Cloud; a brother, Edward Alphonse Punch; three sisters, Daisy West, Annie Weeks and Evla Federine; and three grandchildren. A Mass will be said today at noon at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Garden of Memories.

HOLMES, ROBERT L.

Robert L. Holmes, a janitor, died Aug. 28 of complications after surgery at Charity Hospital. He was 50. Mr. Holmes was born in Houston and lived in New Orleans for many years. He was a Coast Guard veteran. Survivors include two nieces and a nephew. A memorial service will be held today at 6 p.m. at Sophie Wright Park, corner of Magazine and St. Andrew streets, followed by a gathering at Juan's Flying Burrito Restaurant, 2018 Magazine St. Burial will be private. Bultman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LEIBE, LEOLA HOZENTHAL

Leola Holzenthal Leibe, a retired sales representative with Sears, Roebuck and Co., died Thursday at her home. She was 84. Mrs. Leibe was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. She was a former parishioner of St. Raphael Catholic Church. Survivors include two sons, Wayne and Hilberth Liebe III; three brothers, Lawrence, Charles and John Holzenthal; a sister, Helen Laporte; and two grandchildren. A Mass will be said Tuesday at noon at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Hope Mausoleum.

TWILBECK, EUGENE H. ‘GENE' JR.

Eugene H. "Gene" Twilbeck Jr., a former instrument technician with the Shell Refinery and the Shell Chemical plant in Norco, died Saturday of congestive heart failure at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 44. Mr. Twilbeck was born in New Orleans and was a lifelong resident of Kenner. He graduated from St. Charles Borromeo High School. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Survivors include two daughters, Nicole and Tiffany Twilbeck; a brother, Glenn Twilbeck; and three sisters, Mary Ann Senia of Jefferson, Gloria Miller of Norco and Jeannette Migliore of Destrehan. A funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at L.A. Muhleisen and Son Funeral Home, 2607 Williams Blvd., Kenner, followed by a Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1908 Short St. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Friday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery, Destrehan.

BAGENT, KENNETH WAYNE

Kenneth Wayne Bagent, a former cook, died Thursday of undetermined causes at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. He was 49. Mr. Bagent was born in Bogalusa and was a lifelong resident of Sun. Survivors include his mother, Carrie Bagent; two sons, Marty and Ricardo Bagent; a daughter, Kendrell Celestine; five brothers, Bryant K. Bagent Sr. of Dallas, Craig Bagent of Seattle, Currey Bagent of New Orleans, Dwight Bagent of Detroit and Marvyn Bagent of Chicago; and two sisters, Joyce Bagent of Atlanta and Air Force Master Sgt. Sharon Bagent of O'Fallon, Ill. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. at Cook-Richmond Funeral Home, 638 Columbia St., Bogalusa. Burial will be in Sun Community Cemetery.

EASTERDAY, JAMES DAVID

James David Easterday, a retired manager, died Saturday at Northshore Regional Medical Center in Slidell. He was 86. Mr. Easterday was born in Pike, Ohio, lived in New Orleans for many years and lived in Slidell for the past 14 years. He was a manager for the club "My Oh My" in New Orleans and was a retired antiques dealer in Lacombe. Survivors include a nephew, Michael Easterday. A memorial service will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at 426 West Hall Ave., Slidell. A private burial will be held in the family cemetery in Brinkhaven, Ohio. Schoen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
