Vincent Gerrior

Retired Navy Chief Musician Vincent Francis Gerrior Sr., 81, of Edgewater, died June 16, 2002 from complications following surgery for cancer at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Chief Gerrior was born July 6, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Vincent Francis and Laura Arlene Gerrior.

He served in the Navy during World War II as a medical corpsman and musician aboard the carrier USS Hornet in the South Pacific. After the war, he was a chief musician in the Naval Academy Band from 1948 to 1963. He was the founder, owner and president of National Home Industries, a remodeling business in Annapolis, from 1956 until his retirement in 1985. He was active in many organizations, including the Fleet Reserve Association and Annapolis Elks Lodge 622. He was a 32nd degree Mason with Annapolis Lodge 809. His interests included sports, especially football and baseball, fishing, classical music and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting and music events.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Pauline Mae Gerrior; three children, Vincent Francis Gerrior Jr., Diane Cheryl Gerrior and Sandra Ann Balderson, all of Arnold; and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Kenneth and Philip Gerrior. Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Eastport, 208 Chesapeake Ave., with burial in Lakemont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054, or the National Kidney Foundation, 30 E. 33rd St., Suite 1110, New York, NY 10016.

Edward Harmer

Edward Thomas Harmer, 86, of Wardensville, W.Va., and formerly of Annapolis, died June 12, 2002 at the Winchester, Va., Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. Harmer was born March 2, 1916, in Annapolis, the son of the late Wiliam T. and Edith Elizabeth Anderson Harmer. He was married to the former Lorraine "Kitty" Worley for 63 years before her death in April 1997 at age 79. The Harmers lived in Annapolis on Forest Hills Avenue since 1940 and also owned a mountain home in Wardensville. He worked for the federal government for 32 years, retiring in 1971 from the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. An avid hunter, he was active in the National Rifle Association and the Fish and Game Association. He volunteered full time at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Capon Post 2102 in Wardensville. Surviving are four children, Sandra Kay Tregenza of Wheaton, Ill., Nancy Y. Collinson of Salisbury, Edward Thomas Harmer Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska, and G. Carol Lee of Annapolis; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. No formal services were held.

Arrangements were by Loy-Giffens Funeral Home in Wardensville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Capon Valley/Wardensville Volunteer Fire Department, Wardensville, WVA 26851.

Earl King

Earl Selby King, 66, a 33-year-resident of Severna Park and formerly of Catonsville, died of cancer June 16, 2002 at St. Agnes HealthCare in Baltimore after a brief illness. Born in Baltimore, Mr. King graduated in 1953 from Boys' Latin School in Baltimore, where he played lacrosse. He received a bachelor of science degree in 1959 from Gettysburg College, where he started the lacrosse program. He was a manager in human resources while working at Westinghouse in Linthicum from 1959 until his retirement in 2001 from what became a division of Northrop Grumman. He implemented the Discover "E" program at the company. From 1961 to 1963, he was an Army first lieutenant, serving in counter intelligence at Fort Holabird in Baltimore. He was named the Orioles Fan of the Year in 1961 and was also a Colts and Ravens fan. He collected baseball memorabilia, which he kept in steamer trunks. During the 1980s, Mr. King established an inner city youth lacrosse program at Harlem Park Elementary School.

In 2001 he converted to Catholicism and became a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn G. Miller King, whom he married Jan. 28, 1959; four sons, Brett M., Jason J. and Christopher C. King, all of Severna Park, and Todd J. King of Columbia; and five grandchildren. Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Ritchie Highway and Cypress Creek Road, Severna Park. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville.

Randolph Meade Jr.

Retired Navy Capt. Randolph Meade Jr., 87, vice president of business and finance for the University of Delaware from 1966 to 1973, died June 16, 2002 at his Annapolis home after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Born May 19, 1915, in Danville, Va., Capt. Meade graduated from the Naval Academy in 1936 and spent 34 years in the Navy, retiring as a captain in the Supply Corps having served here and abroad including during World War II. He also attended Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program in 1952 and the National War College in 1958 and received a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University in 1965. During his tenure at the University of Delaware, the institution doubled in size, both in physical plant and in students. His oversight responsibilities included buildings and grounds, food service, security, new construction and its financing, all university purchasing as well as general business functions of tuition and payroll. When he retired, his tasks were split among six people, three of whom were newly hired.

He joked he was tempted to ask for back pay for doing the jobs of six people on a single salary, his family said.

He served on the board of directors of Annapolis Life Care, which built and operated the Ginger Cove Life Care Community.

He served as vice president and chairman of the building committee and was on the board for 13 years, helping with the planning, approval and building stages of the facility.

He played squash and tennis and sailed. Fufilling a lifetime dream, he obtained his private pilot's license at age 66, which he relinquished for medical reasons in 1984, when he successfully battled lung cancer. He was an avid fisherman, designing and crafting his own surf rods. He enjoyed hunting, especialy upland game and waterfowl, and competed successfully in skeet and clay pigeon shooting contests.

He also was a lifelong swimmer until about two years ago. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Audrey P. Meade; his children, Kathleen M. Craighill of Annapolis, Julie-Ann M. Urban of Landenberg, Pa., retired Coast Guard Capt. Randolph Meade III of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Susan M. Fitzgerald of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and six grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be said at St. Andrew's Chapel at the Naval Academy at a time to be announced, with burial in the academy columbarium.

Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Naval Academy Foundation, 291 Wood Road, Annapolis, MD 21402.

Alfred Parkinson Jr.

Alfred M. Parkinson Jr., a retired assistant chief of the Naval Academy Fire Department, died of an aneurysm June 17, 2002 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

He was 80 and lived in Annapolis all his life. Born Sept. 25, 1921, in Annapolis, he served as an Army corporal during World War II.

He retired from the academy fire department in 1975 after more than 33 years of service.

He was a former member of the West Annapolis Volunteer Fire Department.

He also was an avid reader and enjoyed golf, walking and playing horse shoes.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Ethel Sears Parkinson; four sons, Ronald W. Parkinson of Annapolis, Alfred M. Parkinson III of Greensboro in Caroline County, Gary L. Parkinson of Easton and David B. Parkinson of Stevensville; one daughter, Rita P. Ormond of Annapolis; two brothers, Wayne Parkinson of Florida and Harold Parkinson of Annapolis; four sisters, Anita P. Skordas, Maryland Guare, Ethel Sadler and Dolores Root, all of Annapolis; and nine grandchildren. He was the son of the late Ethel and Alfred M. Parkinson Sr. and the brother of the late Bernard and William Parkinson.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Neurological Intensive Care Unit, Johns Hopkins Hospital, 600 N. Wolfe St., Meyer 8-181, Baltimore, MD 21287, or the Alzheimer's Association, Central Maryland Chapter, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.

Marvin Queen

Marvin Queen, 51, of Annapolis, died of natural causes June 15, 2002 at Langton Green in Annapolis after a three-year illness.

Mr. Queen was born Jan. 20, 1951, in Baltimore. He worked on the Providence Center mobile crew and enjoyed shopping and group gatherings.

He attended Heritage Baptist Church.

His interests included baseball, football, walks, community rides, music and a favorite saving, "Marvin Queen, Superman."

Surviving are his mother, Chloe Bond, and two brothers, Bernard and Wayne Queen, all of Baltimore.

He was the son of the late Bernard E. Queen and the brother of the late Steven Queen. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Miller's Metropolitan Chapel funeral home, 1922 Forest Drive, where a Christian wake will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Zion cemetery in Lansdowne.

Carol Walker

Carol Ann Turner Walker, 68, of Alexandria, Va., who was a dedicated Navy wife, died of a massive stroke June 14, 2002 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda following open heart surgery.

Mrs. Walker was a native of Annapolis, the daughter of Louise and Leroy Turner and granddaughter of the late "Police Jones, " who patrolled Eastport.

A 1952 graduate of Annapolis High School, she attended Towson State University before returning to Annapolis to work as a legal secretary in the law offices of Tilghman Bryce. In June 1954 she married "Ted" Walker, her high school sweetheart, who had just graduated from the Naval Academy and entered the Navy Supply Corps. Over the next 34 years as a Navy wife, she traveled widely, including two tours of duty in Spain and Panama, entertained multitudes in their home and participated in other military support duties.

The last tour of duty was in the Washington, D.C., area., where they retired in 1988 to enjoyed season tickets at the Kennedy Center and boating as members of the Chesapeake Yacht Club in Shady Side.

She was asked by the Navy to be a sponsor at the launching at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego of the USS Supply AOE6, the lead ship of a new class of Navy support vessel.

She thereafter was an active member of the Navy Society of Sponsors.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, retired Rear Adm. Edward T. "Ted" Walker Jr.; her daughters, Wendy Walker of Virginia Beach, Va., and Lynn Walker Streett in Guam; and two grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, Va. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Naval Academy Chapel, with burial in the Naval Academy Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family desires memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058.

Alice Boston

Alice Virginia Boston, 63, of Churchton, died of liver failure June 21, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mrs. Boston was born April 18, 1939, in Anne Arundel County and attended county public schools. She had worked at Crownsville Hospital Center.

She enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts, sewing, quilting, completing puzzles, flowers and plants.

Her husband, Samuel Price Boston, died in 1999.

Surviving are two sons, David Boston of Annapolis and Gregory Boston of Churchton; one daughter, Lisa Tongue of Shady Side; her mother, Ruth Blunt of Churchton; two brothers, Robert Turner of Annapolis and Weldon Turner of Churchton; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mathew's United Methodist Church in Shady Side, with a Christian wake at 10 a.m. and funeral at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
