Aubrey J. Whealton

GEORGETOWN -- Aubrey J. Whealton, 56, of Georgetown, and formerly of Anniston, Ala., died Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at his home.

Born in Ironshire (Berlin), he was a son of Mildred Coffin Whealton of Selbyville and the late Richard Whealton.

He retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years of service. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, earning the defense service medal, a Bronze Service Star, an A.E.F Vietnam Campaign Medal and also served three tours of duty in Korea.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sun Won Whealton of Georgetown; a son, Robert Daniel Whealton of Boston; two brothers, Elisha Whealton and his wife, Lynette, of Georgetown and John Whealton and his wife, Brenda, of Georgetown; a stepbrother, George Long and his wife, Jeannette, of Corpus Cove, Texas; a sister, Millie Christiansen and her husband, Lonnie, of Shiloh, N.C.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Richard Whealton.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St. in Millsboro, where a viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Pastor Jeff Hudson will officiate. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery in Millsboro.

Emmet Thomas Meland

SALISBURY -- Emmet Thomas Meland, 82, of Salisbury died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Born in Burlington, N.D., he was the son of the late John Christian Meland and Emma Petersen Meland, who both moved here from Norway when they were teenagers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada Bruce Meland, in 1992; a daughter, Leslie M. Alley, in 1989; and a brother, Petre Meland.

A World War II Army veteran, he was a paratrooper at Fort Benning and after being discharged from active duty he served in the National Guard for 15 years. He was a member of American Legion No. 64, VFW Meuse Post 194, Loyal Order of the Moose 654 and BPOE No. 817. In 1984, Mr. Meland retired from C&P; Telephone Co. as a central office technician after 37 1/2 years of service. During his employment he received a citation for staying through the 1963 storm in Ocean City to keep the telephone lines working.

He is survived by two daughters, Paula Donophan and her husband, the Rev. Charles Donophan, and Christina Messick and her husband, Newell; one son-in-law, Harry Alley; six grandchildren, Tom Adkins and his wife, Sue, Erin Calloway and her husband, Derrick, Margie Rus and her husband, Jason, Paul Messick and his wife, Michele, Kaitlyn Alley and Kendrick Alley; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Josh Richardson; and several nieces and nephews.

Following cremation, a service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by the staff of Bounds Funeral Home.

Edward I. Patchett III

OCEAN CITY -- Edward I. Patchett III died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Easton, a son of the late Edward I. and Kathleen K. Patchett.

He is survived by a son, Michael E. Patchett of Ocean City; a daughter, Heather Renee Vincent of Odenton, Md., and their mother, Judith Ann Powell of Mount Vernon; his loving companion of 17 years, Michele Heim; a grandchild, Zachary M. Vincent; and a sister, Phyllis Peddicord of Easton.

He doted on his two dogs, Sir Captain Nemo of Marlin and Bugsy Malone.

He moved here more than 20 years ago and owned Edward I. Patchett Inc., trading as Patchett Electric Co. He was a member of IBEW Local No. 24 and was active in boating and motorcycles. As a karate teacher, he held 4th-degree black belt status.

Friends may call at Ullrich Funeral Home on Route 50 on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Rev. Bill Sterling will officiate at a memorial service.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Michael G. Mann Fund Inc., c/o Guy Ayres, 5200 B Coastal Highway, Ocean City, Md. 21842.

Andrew Stone

SALISBURY -- Andrew "Fuzz" Stone, 71, died peacefully Saturday, March 5, 2005, at his home.

Born Feb. 24, 1934, in Salisbury, he was a son of the late Charles David and Hester Trader Stone.

Andrew was educated in Salisbury. His Christian training was at Union Methodist Church in Delmar. He was an avid fisherman and loved puzzles. He was also a jack-of-all-trades.

Fuzz, as he was always called, worked at Geo. L. Ralph V.V. Hughes. His last place of employment was Oakwood Sod Farm, where he had been employed since 1969.

Left with fond memories are one son, Lester Bullock and his wife, Monica; one brother, Sam Stone of Salisbury; one foster sister, Jean Brown of Delmar; one brother-in-law, Floyd Cottman of Salisbury; three sisters-in-law, Pauline Stone of Salisbury, Jackie Stone of Washington and Alice Stone of New York; four grandchildren, all of Salisbury; two devoted nieces, Monica Cottman and Ellen Hawkins, who cared for him up until his death; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tyrell Bullock; three sisters, Lillie Mae Curtis, Agnes Stone and Viola Stone; and three brothers, Charles, Frank and Daniel Stone.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Salisbury, where friends may call two hours prior to the service.

Arrangements are entrusted to Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Salisbury.

Henry Feige Gemeny

SALISBURY -- Henry Feige Gemeny, 84, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at Salisbury Center: Genesis ElderCare in Salisbury after a brief stay.

Born in Bozman, Md., on the family farm on the Harris River off the Chesapeake Bay, he grew up to love the water and seafood. Being a lifelong fisherman and crabber, he was a member of the Assateague Mobile Sportfisherman Association. He enjoyed bowling for many years. He was a lifelong gardener and had a friendly competition with his brother, Bill, to see who would have the latest ripe tomatoes. He was a past member of the Masons.

He was a World War II veteran in the 464th Army Air Force as a corporal stationed in England for three years, where he also got the opportunity to visit his mother's relatives in Dundee, Scotland, when on leave. He was a longtime member of American Legion Post 64 and post commander from 1966 to 1967.

After the war, he married his sister's best friend, Isabelle, who were both World War II Waves veterans stationed in Washington.

He was a graduate of Ben Franklin University in Washington and for 30 years worked for Southern States Cooperative auditing its farm stores throughout the Eastern Shore.

After retiring in 1985, he took classes in chair caning and began a business in caning, antiques and weaving crab nets.

He is survived by his wife, Isabelle, of Salisbury; daughters, Susan Gemeny of Keedysville, Md., and Sharon Benoit of Knoxville, Md.; a son, Nelson Andrew Gemeny of Salisbury; and a sister, Betty Oldham of Chesapeake, Va. He had six grandchildren, Cassie Grant, Alan Tarwater, Corey Benoit, Erin Gemeny, Brandon Gemeny and Kristen Gemeny. He also had one great-granddaughter, Hailey Grant, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Henrietta Gemeny, and two brothers, William Denny Gemeny and John Donnet Gemeny.

Friends may call at Bounds Funeral Home at 705 E. Main St. in Salisbury from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. A funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Bethesda United Methodist Church at 406 N. Division St. in Salisbury. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, which will be officiated at the church by the Rev. Dale Vroman and Dr. Daniel Rich. Interment will follow in the veterans section of Springhill Memory Gardens in Salisbury.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Salisbury Volunteer Fire Station 2, PO Box 3381, Salisbury, Md. 21802; or the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association, 2700 Chestnut Parkway, Chester, Pa. 19013.

Louise L. Layfield

SALISBURY -- Louise L. Layfield, 92, of Salisbury died Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Salisbury Center: Genesis ElderCare and had been a resident of Pine Bluff Village in March 2003.

Born in Salisbury, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Mary Ann Ennis Livingston. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Layfield.

Mrs. Layfield was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Salisbury and a member of the women's society. Mrs. Layfield worked for 19 years at the Wicomico County Board of Education in accounting. She was also a graduate of Goldey Beacom College in Wilmington.

She is survived by a son, William F. Layfield of Salisbury; a special niece, Shirley Paucchi; several nieces and nephews; and her faithful and devoted dog, Gypsy.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Holloway Funeral Home. Calling time will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dale Vroman will officiate. Interment will be in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Bethesda United Methodist Church, 406 N. Division St., Salisbury, Md. 21801; the American Cancer Society, PO Box 163, Salisbury, Md. 21802; or Trinity United Methodist Church, Jackson Memorial Building Fund, 112 High St., Salisbury, Md. 21801.

Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home at 501 Snow Hill Road in Salisbury.

William L. Ruhl Jr.

SALISBURY -- William L. Ruhl Jr., 82, of Salisbury died Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late William L. Ruhl Sr. and Dorothy Larkin Ruhl.

A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the American Legion in Dagsboro. He was the former president of the York, Pa., Tourist Bureau, was a safety director for Victor Lynn Lines in Salisbury and retired as general manager of Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge in York.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edith M. Ruhl; two daughters, Norma Huffman and her husband, John, of Waynesboro, Va., and Dottie Warfield and her husband, Ron, of Salisbury; four grandchildren, Pam Foster and her husband, Alan, of Waynesboro, Jeff Huffman and his wife, Sarah, of Mechanicsville, Va., Chris Warfield of Salisbury and Bradley Warfield of Philadelphia; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Sperry of Connecticut; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Ruhl, and a sister, Margaret Wilkins.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Bounds Funeral Home on East Main Street in Salisbury, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Wicomico Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 209 E. Market St., Salisbury, Md. 21804.
