Sewell, Iris Elizabeth
April 3, 2001

Iris Elizabeth Sewell of Easton, MD died on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 74.

Born in Tilghman, Md, July 30, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Ira C. and Esta Frampton Lednum. Following her marriage to Roy " Jackie" Sewell in 1944, they operated the general store in Wittman until 1958. They then managed the Tastee Freez in St. Michaels until 1962. She was a sales clerk in various store in Easton until retiring in 1990. Mr. Sewell died in 1989.

She was a member of the Talbot Senior Center, the E.E. Streets Memorial Post #5118 V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and Women of the Moose #1250.

Mrs. Sewell is survived by a son, Ira R. Sewell of Easton; a daughter, Sharon Lee Wright of Easton; a brother, Ira C. Lednum of Easton; four granddaughters, Teresa, Beverly, Cindy and Cathy and eight great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, Clark Lednum and Aldridge Lednum and one sister, Dorothy Anthony.

Graveside services will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at 1:00 PM. Friends may call at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Saturday morning from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1306, Easton, MD 21601.

Swartz Sr., Raymond Harold
April 2, 2001

Raymond H. Swartz of Tilghman died April 2, 2001 at Memorial Hospital, Easton. He was 73.

Born March 11, 1928, in Tunis Mills, he was the son of the late Lewis B. and Caroline Bock Swartz. He attended school in the Little Old Red School House in Tunis Mills until the 3rd grade when he moved to Easton and in 1945, graduated from Easton High School. He then began a career with Noble Engine Re-builders and Beasley Industries, where he retired in 1993 as a production manager after 45 years of service.

An active member of the Tilghman United Methodist Church where he held many offices, his greatest joy was teaching his Sunday School Class.

Also active in his community, he had been Scout Master of the Tilghman Boy Scouts, President of the Tilghman Elementary, P.T.A. and President of Home Run Baker Little League Association. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed giving the yield from his garden to his family and friends.

In addition to wife, the former Kathleen Murphy, whom he married June 21, 1947, Mr Swartz is survived by five sons, Raymond Swartz, Jr., Mark Swartz, Ronnie Swartz, Chet Swartz, and Todd Swartz; 22 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Henry Swartz who died September 3, 1987.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 5, 2001 at 2 PM at the Tilghman United Methodist Church Tilghman, MD, where friends may call on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 PM and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Tilghman Cemetery, Tilghman, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to the Tilghman United Methodist Church, Tilghman, MD 21671 or the Tilghman Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance Fund, Tilghman, MD, 21671.

Wilson, Frances Ellen Fairbanks
April 1, 2001

Frances Ellen Fairbanks Wilson, formerly of Tilghman and Baltimore, MD, died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Methodist Manor House in Seaford, DE.

Born in Fairbank, MD, she was the daughter of the late Edward Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Daffin Fairbanks.

Mrs. Wilson was the widow of Samuel A. Wilson, Sr. and is survived by two sons, Samuel A. Wilson, Jr. of FL and Robert A. Wilson, Sr. of Keswick, VA; six grandchildren, Christopher C. Wilson, Randolph F. Wilson, Jonathan C. Wilson, Robert A. Wilson, Jr., Mark R. Wilson and Susan Wilson Lyons.

Private graveside services will be held at Lorraine Park Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.

Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton, MD.

Baynard, Hazel Jean
August 6, 2001

Hazel Jean Baynard died on Monday, August 6, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital, Easton. She was 63.

Born in Easton on October 10, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Lister W. and Hazel Allen Baynard. She graduated from Easton High School in 1956, and then received her nursing degree from the Baltimore City Hospital, School of Nursing in 1957. A longtime resident of Talbot County, she worked as an LPN for 29 years, 20 of which were at the Easton Memorial Hospital. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge #1520 in Easton.

Mrs. Baynard is survived by three sons, Kenie Scot Cole of Denton, Leslie Howard Cole of Greensboro, and Gregory Allen Cole of Choptank; a daughter, Sheryl Ann Glidden of Greensboro; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Fellows, Helfenbein, & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton on Friday, August 10, 2001 at 11:00 AM where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 114 Baptist Street, Salisbury, MD 21801.

Davis, Shirley K.
August 7, 2001

Shirley K. Davis, formerly of St. Michaels, died Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at William Hill Manor, Easton where she had resided since March of 2001. She was 81.

Born in Baltimore, February 12, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Charles M. and Bertie Dorer Kreiner. After graduating from Seton High School in 1937, she worked for the American Red Cross. On May 26, 1941 she married Harold M. Davis a Methodist seminary student. They moved to Delaware, where she worked for a brief time at the Dupont Company. During his career as a minister, they made their home in Farmington, Odessa and Milton, DE and then Elkton, Salisbury and Easton, MD where he retired in 1979. Following retirement they moved to St. Michaels to make their home.

A member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Easton, she was also a member of the United Methodist Women of the Church.

A loyal and faithful wife, mother and grandmother, she is survived, in addition to her husband, by a daughter, Marcia D. Byers and her husband, Dr. Robert M. Byers of Houston, TX; a son, Kenneth M. Davis and his wife, Mary Davis, of Easton; four grandchildren, Dr. John M. Byers, Robby M. Byers, Dr. Matthew D. Byers and MacGregor C. Byers and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2001 at 10:00 AM at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Easton. Private burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 100 Peachblossom Rd., Easton, MD 21601.

Eason, Anne K.
August 6, 2001

Anne Kathryn Eason of Oxford, MD died Monday, August 6, 2001 at Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 80.

Born in Easton, MD, March 18, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Ruby Smith Eason and lived all her life in Easton until 1988 when she moved to Oxford. She graduated from Easton High School in 1938 and following graduation began a singing career, which included study with the well-known bass-baritone, John Charles Thomas. She was unable to continue this pursuit, however, but did continue to perform as a member and soloist with area choruses and church choirs. She joined the staff of the Talbot County Free Library in 1941 and except for a short time when she was recovering from an illness, was employed by the library until her retirement in 1986. She ran the Kent-Caroline Library Bookmobile in 1962-1963 and then returned to Easton where she built the Talbot County Bookmobile into a popular and heavily used service, carrying over 2000 books and visiting schools, towns and outlying rural areas in the county, making over 30 different stops a week.

She was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. She was baptized and confirmed there and served on many committees including the altar guild, Chapter and as a Lay Eucharist Visitor and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a counselor for alcohol and drug abuse prevention and intervention, she was a member of the Easton Players theater group and acted and sang in many of their productions. She was also very active in the Easton Community Concert Association and served as president for many years. She was a member of the Academy of the Arts, the Talbot Humane Society, and Friends of the Library.

After her retirement she worked at a variety of jobs, including a State sponsored fish counting job during the rockfish moratorium, managing a shop selling handmade stoneware pottery made by her friend and partner, Susan May, and in 1991 she joined the staff at the Academy of the Arts as a gallery attendant. She was employed there until her death.

She is survived by her adopted family of Susan Norton Taylor May, who was her devoted friend and partner, and Susan's children, Joan May of Oxford, Nat May of Boston, MA, John May of Kittery, ME and Ned may of Boston, MA whom she helped raise and nourish for twenty four years. Also, Susan's sister, Joan Norton Taylor Seyler of Oxford, MD and their mother, Margaret Norton Taylor. She is also survived by three cousins, Beth Evans, Dorothy Cooper and Elizabeth Barnes, all of Easton.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2001 at 11 AM at Trinity Cathedral, Easton, MD.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to Trinity Cathedral Memorial Fund, 315 Goldsborough St., Easton, MD 21601.

Arrangements are by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton.

Elben Cooper, William
August 2, 2001

William Cooper ("Bill") Elben ended his courageous battle against cancer on Thursday, August 2, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, MD.

Born on December 7, 1933, he is the son of Henrietta Elben of Denton, MD and the late F. Cooper Elben. He was reared in the Tuckahoe Neck area of Caroline County and graduated from North Caroline High School in 1951.

On March 24, 1956, he married his surviving spouse, the former F. Grace Davis. Five children were born as a result of their marriage; Sheree L. Patrick of Arnold; Karen L. Haddaway, who resides in Tilghman with her husband, Ell; Michael W. Elben, who resides in Cordova with his wife, Terry; Patricia E. Campen, who resides in Oxford with her husband, Sid and John C. Elben who resides in Cordova with his wife, Debbie. He is also survived by a brother, Fleetwood Elben of Denton; his stepmother, Evelyn Palmatary of Church Hill; a half brother, James Elben of Denton; a half sister, June Harvey of Georgetown, DE and eight grandchildren, Christopher M. Brennick of Florence, SC, Jodi M. Brennick of Tilghman, Trilby L. Cahall of Denton, Casey L. Patrick of Easton, Michel L. Elben, Mitchell R. Elben, Zachary J. Elben, and Alison H. Elben, all of Cordova.

Bill Elben enjoyed a good life with a loving family and friends. H e was a lifelong farmer who was recognized as an honest, hard working individual, at one time receiving top state honors for soybean production in the Mid-Atlantic region. His favorite pastimes included time spent with family and collecting antique farm machinery and toy tractors. He was a member of the Easton B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1622, Easton Moose Lodge #1520, Talbot County Farm Bureau and the Tuckahoe Steam and Gas Association.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 6, 2001 at 10:00 AM at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Easton. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, August 5, 2001 from 3 to 5 PM and on Monday, one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery, Hillsboro, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Dr., Easton, MD 21601 or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 1306, Easton, MD 21601.
