Martha A. Petre

MAUGANSVILLE - Martha Arlene Petre, 76, of 13910 Blue Mountain Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 17, 1923, in Antrim Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Fannie Haldeman Oberholzer.

Her first husband, Amos Risser, died in 1951. Her second husband, J. Mark Petre, died in 1970.

She had worked at B&L Store in Maugansville for 16 years; and was caregiver to her mother for nearly 40 years.

She was a member of Reiff Mennonite Church near Cearfoss.

She is survived by three stepdaughters, Mary Lois Wilfong of Hagerstown, Ethel P. Martin and Sue Lehman, both of Maugansville; one sister, Esther L. Martin of Waynesboro, Pa.; three brothers, Clifford C. Oberholzer of Chambersburg, Pa., Walter H. Oberholzer of Maugansville and Richard E. Oberholzer of Hagerstown; seven stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Ellen P. Martin and Nora DeHart; one infant sister, Elizabeth Oberholzer; one brother, Daniel Oberholzer; and one stepgrandson.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Reiff Mennonite Church near Cearfoss. The Reiff Mennonite Church Ministry will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour before the service.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Columbia Road Health Services, c/o Mary Lois Wilfong, 16803 Petmar Circle, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Bonnie M. Milburn

KEEDYSVILLE - Bonnie Marie Milburn, 56, of 18334 Mansfield Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 4, 1944, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Theresa Gertrude Wade Grim of Williamsport and the late Carl Frederick Grim.

She was a 1962 graduate of Boonsboro High School.

She was employed by Brethren Mutual Insurance Co. in Hagerstown as an underwriter, retiring in 1998. Previously, she worked for Wright Gardner Insurance Co.

She was a member of Sharpsburg Bible Church.

She was a member of Sharpsburg Lions Club.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Claude Eugene Milburn; two daughters, Carla Lewis and Teresa Swiger, both of Keedysville; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sharpsburg Bible Church, 300 W. Antietam St. in Sharpsburg. The Rev. Gene Renner will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Keedysville.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St. in Williamsport. The funeral home will be open Friday after 9 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Sharpsburg Lions Club, c/o Elizabeth Shoemaker, P.O. Box 180, Sharpsburg, MD 21782.

Charles J. Shafer

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Charles Joseph "Charlie" Shafer, 72, of 204 W. Main St., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Middletown.

Born Feb. 6, 1927, in Middletown, he was the son of the late Joseph Edward and Effie Virginia Wiles Shafer.

He was employed by Fort Detrick as a heavy equipment operator from 1964 until his retirement in 1990; and had worked as a farmer; and for three contractors.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown.

He was a member of National Federal Retired Employees; Catoctin Fish and Game Protective Association, Myersville, Md.; Loyal Order of Moose 371, Frederick, Md.; and Sons of AMVETS Valley Memorial Post 9, Middletown.

He is survived by his wife, June Thomas Shafer; a daughter, Dixie Lee Eichelberger of Middletown; a son, Joe Shafer of Middletown; three sisters, Mary Zeigler and Irene Eisentrout, both of Middletown, and Louise Tyeryar of Frederick; a brother, Albert Shafer of Middletown; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Pauline Eigenbrode, Catherine Shoemaker, Earl Shafer and Glenn Shafer.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown. The Rev. Donald L. Turley will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran cemetery in Middletown.

Friends may call today from noon to 9 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St. in Middletown, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Visitation also will be Friday at noon at the church.

Hilda L. Suder-Smith

Hilda Lorraine "Sis" Suder-Smith, 59, of 9924 Garis Shop Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at her home.

Born Oct. 19, 1940, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Paul Sr. and Hilda L. Smith Suder.

She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, as a letter carrier.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of North American Rod and Gun Club; Redmen Pocahontas; and Postal Carriers Union.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Merle Smith; two daughters, Stacy Lynn Smith-Schwab and Kendra Deane Smith-Wilburn, both of Hagerstown; three sons, Charles Brian Smith and Thomas Michael Smith Sr., both of Hagerstown, and William Edward Smith Sr. of Falling Waters, W.Va.; two sisters, Sheila Eileen Hayes of Arlington, Va., and Mary Ellen Malone of Atlanta; three brothers, Leslie Paul Suder Jr. and Gary Wayne Suder, both of Hagerstown, and Ronald Phillip Suder of Stuebenville, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Harold Lee Smith.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Nick Britton will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Helen F. Spalding

Helen F. Spalding, 94, of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000.

Born July 12, 1905, in Union Bridge, Md., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Z. and Sarah L. Harbaugh Fogle.

Her husband, Horace F. Spalding, died in 1961.

She was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Joann Morris of Slatington, Pa., Helen West and Romaine V. Shriver, both of Hagerstown, and Sarah Bonnie Pauling of Zephyrhills, Fla.; three sons, Wayne H. Spalding of Charles Town, W.Va., Charles T. Spalding of Greencastle, Pa., and M. Blaine Spalding of Barn Kick, N.J.; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; five step grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Hal Atkins will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Washington Square United Methodist Church, 538 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown.

Linda S. Holmes

RHINEBECK, N.Y. - Linda Schoen Holmes, 76, of Rhinebeck and formerly of Hamilton, Ohio, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, in Rhinebeck.

She was the daughter of the late Mildred Teague and Roy M. Schoen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Mills Holmes.

She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School and attended Pennsylvania State University.

She managed The Bookstore at 27 Washington St. in Hagerstown. Later, she was managing partner of Booksellers at Fountainhead Plaza in Hagerstown.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church; St. John's Episcopal Church; and St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church.

She was a member of New London Hills Club; The Junior League; Women's Club; served as a Washington County election poll worker; and supported the Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville, Pa.

She volunteered for civic, church and philanthropic causes.

She is survived by four children, P. Kimball Holmes of Grand Forks, N.D., Ginna Holmes Moore of Rhinebeck, Paul Mills Holmes II of Louisville, Ky. and Casey Newton Daniels of Severna Park, Md.; a sister, Sheridan Jane Hamilton of Hagerstown; two grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Stephen F. Schoen and Derek M. Schoen; and her former husbands, Dan G. Newton and John L. Grabber.

Her life will be celebrated at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Inc., 106 Prince St., Kingston, NY 12401.
