Samuel P. Forbes

SMITHSBURG - Samuel Paul Forbes, 87, of 21034 Jefferson Blvd., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1912, in Scotland, Pa., he was the son of the late Merle Charles and Mary Catherine Winger Forbes.

He was a member of Eagles of Waynesboro, Pa.; and Beaver Creek Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Evelyn Forbes; five daughters, Delores Snyder of Greencastle, Pa., Barbara Shillingberg, Joan Durr and Sharon Forbes, all of Hagerstown and Vonny Hartman of Williamsport; a sister, Edna Deamer of Chambersburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Ray Forbes.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Ernest Thompson will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery in Scotland.

There will be no public viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 322-324 E. Antietam St., Suite 306B, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Esther M. Hull

CLEAR SPRING - Esther M. Hull, 83, of Draper Road, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at her home.

Born in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Bruce S. and Catherine S. Gossard.

Prior to her retirement as an officer and manager of the Clear Spring branch of Maryland National Bank, she worked at the Clear Spring post office.

She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where she was active in church organizations and was a former Sunday School teacher.

She was an officer and charter member of the Women's Auxiliary of Clear Spring Fire Company, a charter member of Clear Spring District Historical Society, and a member and officer of Clear Spring Senior Citizen's Club.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, J. Franklin Hull; two daughters, Judith M. Wise of Gerrardstown, W.Va., and Patricia A. Bowman of Westminster, Md.; a son, Terry F. Hull of Crownsville, Md.; a sister, Mary J. Hull of Clear Spring; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her body was donated to the Anatomy Board of Maryland.

A memorial service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring. Pastor Andrew Carr will officiate.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 30 S. Martin St., Clear Spring, MD 21722.

Doreen A. Hollar

Doreen Audrey Hollar, 73, of 343 S. Cannon Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at her home.

Born May 22, 1926, in New Castle, England, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Saddie Scott Gibbison.

She was employed as a unit clerk at Washington County Hospital, retiring in 1996.

She served in the British Royal Air Force during World War II.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth L. Hollar; three daughters, Sharon L. Shafer of Hagerstown, Rosemary F. Gudmundson of Clear Spring and Doreen L. Weddle of Hagerstown; three sons, Kenneth W. Hollar and David S. Hollar, both of Hagerstown, and Joseph E. Hollar of Chambersburg, Pa.; four grandsons; three granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; a nephew; and four cousins in England.

Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday at 10 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St. in Hagerstown.

Philip A. McCabe

Philip Anthony McCabe, 67, of 303B N. Colonial Drive, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at his home.

Born Dec. 25, 1931, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Herman Roland and Regina Edna Dunn McCabe.

He retired from The Baltimore Sun newspaper.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

He was a member of the American Legion in Shrewsbury, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth McCabe; two daughters, Julie Gillooie of Bel Air, Md., and Andrea McCabe of Harve de Grace, Md.; a stepdaughter, Kathy Pompell of Smithsburg; a stepson, Dennis Titus of Harrisburg, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William McCabe; and a half brother, Paul Grams.

Services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Services also will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Loudon Park Chapel in Baltimore, where entombment will be made in the Mausoleum.

The family also will receive friends Tuesday at noon at the chapel in Baltimore.

Richard L. Cushwa

MAUGANSVILLE - Richard Leon Cushwa, 88, of 13715 Village Mill Drive and formerly of Spickler Road in Clear Spring, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 4, 1911, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Richard Eugene and Julia Seibert Cushwa.

He was the owner and operator of Walnut Hill Cabinet Shop of Clear Spring.

He was a charter member of Clear Spring Lions Club and Clear Spring Volunteer Fire Company. He served as a coach with Clear Spring Little League. He also was a former Scout master for the Clear Spring Troop.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hilda E. Frantz Cushwa; a daughter, Sylvia C. Weisman of Pasadena, Md.; two sons, William D. Cushwa of Clear Spring and Richard A. Cushwa of Hunker, Pa.; a sister, Frances Schnebly of Williamsport; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Whitmore, Helen Cushwa and Louise Cushwa; and a brother, Raymond Cushwa.

Services will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike in Clear Spring. Father Alfred Smith will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Paul cemetery in Clear Spring.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.

Kenneth E. Fogle

FREDERICK, Md. - Kenneth Edward "Ken" Fogle, 78, of 750 Carroll Parkway, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home.

Born May 1, 1921, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Jesse Scott Fogle and Agnes Lanina Pearl Fogle Gosnell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Katherine Grove Fogle, in 1993.

He worked as a sales representative for several oil companies in the Frederick and Hagerstown areas. He retired from FCNB as assistant cashier and public relations officer.

He served in the U.S. Army in the 746th Tank Batallion in Europe during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

An active member of Frederick Church of the Brethren, he was a member of the chancel choir, an officer and teacher of the Sunday School and a Stephen minister.

He was well-known in the area as a tenor soloist; he and his wife often performed duets throughout the area.

He was a life member of Francis Scott Key Post 11 American Legion and VFW Post John R. Webb in Frederick. He was a member and past president of Breakfast Optimist Club of Frederick, and past member of Frederick Catoctones. He had been active with cold weather shelters for the homeless. He also was an active member of Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, working in the Emergency Room at the hospital and with Patient Relations.

He is survived by three children, Jerry L. Fogle and the Rev. Lerry W. Fogle, both of Frederick, and Deanne E. Boksleitner of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Helen L. Mercer of Frederick; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Ave. in Frederick. The Rev. Paul Mundey, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Frederick.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Frederick Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 201 Fairview Ave., Frederick, MD 21701.
