June Socks

June Socks, 73, of 813 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 29, 1925, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Benjamin and Violet May Keckley Horning.

She had been employed by Hagerstown Shoe Co.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer Socks; a daughter, Shirley Lescalleet of Falling Waters, W.Va.; a sister, Geraldine Kendrick of Hagerstown; two brothers, Melvin Horning of Hagerstown and Glenn Horning of Atlanta; and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Baker.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert F. Fay

Robert F. Fay, 70, of 17908 Sand Wedge Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at Western Maryland Hospital Center, Hagerstown.

Born Sept. 2, 1928, in Somerville, Mass., he was the son of the late Frank Patrick and Marion Duncan Laird Fay.

His wife, Irene E. Fay, died in 1994.

He retired from Pierce Associates Inc., Mechanical Contractors in Alexandria, Va.

He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, retiring as a master sergeant.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a member of AARP.

He is survived by two daughters, Jo Anne E. Riggins of Thornburg, Va., and Delores Y. Rose of Pompano Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy H. Crane and Virginia L. Panzero.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate. Entombment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Friday.

Catherine L. Covell

FREDERICK, Md. - Catherine Lee Beard Covell, 88, of Frederick, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 9, 1910, in Adamstown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Irving Cleveland Preston and Mamie Lavenia Burrier Beard.

Her first husband, Grayson Leroy DeGrange, and her second husband, John Covell, preceded her in death.

She was a member of Ijamsville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Beverly C. Damuth of Hagerstown, Jean D. Whipp of Araby, Md., and Barbara A. Bell of California, Md.; one son, Grayson L. DeGrange Jr. of Frederick; one sister, Hilda Rice of Araby; three stepchildren; nine grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Annabelle Huffer; two brothers, Paul E. Beard and Howard I. Beard; and a granddaughter.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, 1201 N. Market St., Frederick. The Rev. Beverly Stang will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery in Frederick.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

Carolyn S. Judge

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Carolyn S. Judge, 86, of Painesville, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at Lake East Hospital.

Born Nov. 15, 1912, in Perry, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George and Edith Salkeld.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Judge, in 1956.

She was a 1930 graduate of Harvey High School, and was captain of the girls' basketball team.

She worked for the FP&E Railroad in the 1940s and The Municipal Court of Hagerstown from 1948 to 1958. She then was executive director of the Red Cross of Lake County; and retired as a supervisor in the sample department at Fasson in 1978.

She was a member of First Church, Congregational of Painesville.

She was a past matron of Urania Chapter 284 Order of the Eastern Star; past president of Professional Business Women of Hagerstown; a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; election board judge for the Republican Party of Lake County. She played golf in three leagues and volunteered at Lake East Hospital.

She is survived by a niece, Glenda Hill of Houston; five nephews, Peter Deane of Leroy, Ohio, Barry Deane of Painesville, Vance Roth and Brian Roth, both of Mentor, Ohio, and Stephen Salkeld of Pennsylvania; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; three great-great-nieces; and two stepdaughters, Lady Diane Knill of England and Jane Whitted of Reno, Nev.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Deane and Sally Roth; a brother, George M. Salkeld; and a nephew.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home, 368 Mentor Ave., Painesville. Dr. John P. Davis, of First Church Congregational, will officiate. Burial will be in Perry Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7:30 to 9 p.m., with Eastern Star services at 8:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Wank Henson Jr.

Wank "Popeye" Henson Jr., 69, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Pinesburg, Md., died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Mount Airy, Md.

Born Sept. 28, 1929, in Pinesburg, he was the son of the late Wank and Mary Jane Nave Henson.

He was employed by Bud Jennings Auto Sales, retiring in 1991.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Lemaster Henson of Hagerstown; three daughters, Brenda MacKereth and Deanna Rudisill, both of Hagerstown, and Mary Gilmer of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a son, Terry Henson of Hagerstown; a stepdaughter, Dawn Lemaster of Hagerstown; a stepson, David Miley of Chambersburg, Pa.; a sister, Ella Colbert of Maugansville; two brothers, Edward Henson of Hagerstown and Amos Henson of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two step grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Robert Timmons will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Nelson L. Butts Sr.

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - Nelson Leroy Butts Sr., of Hillsborough, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at his home.

Born in Hagerstown, he was raised at San Mar Orphanage in Boonsboro.

He worked at the Environmental Protection Agency at Research Triangle Park, retiring in 1993 after 38 years of government service.

He served in the U.S. Army in Germany.

He was a member of Lawrence Road Baptist Church, was a deacon, sang in the choir and held several offices.

He was a member of Lebannon, Ohio Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Wilder Butts; three children, Nelson Butts Jr. of Creedmoor, N.C., Deborah Jean Butts and Judy Lynn Butts Vest, both of Camden, Ohio; three brothers, Tommy Butts of Waynesboro, Pa., Jimmy Butts of Hagerstown and Hubert Butts of Tallahassee, Fla.; two grandchildren; 18 nieces and nephews; 26 great-nieces and great-nephews; and a great-great-niece.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lawrence Road Baptist Church in Hillsborough. The Revs. Lonnie Bell, Jack Hollowell, Bob Eldredge and Jack Moody will officiate. Burial will be in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Walkers Funeral Home, 204 N. Churton St., Hillsborough.
