Naomi S. Murfree

KEEDYSVILLE - Naomi Spong Murfree, 92, formerly of 1024 Brinker Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at the home of her brother, Robert Spong, 7115 University Drive, Keedysville.

Born Dec. 4, 1906, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Grace Bowers Spong.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Murfree, who died in 1974.

She was employed by W.F. Prior Company, Hagerstown, in her early years.

She was an active member of Salem Reformed Church, United Church of Christ, Hagerstown, and of Brinkley Sunday School Class.

She was a volunteer with Potomac Center for nine years.

In addition to her brother, she is survived by one niece and several nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Connor and Rohn Simpson and three brothers, Earl Spong, Willis Spong and Vincent Spong.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Reformed Church, United Church of Christ, 13182 Salem Road, Hagerstown. The Rev. Sharon L. Forbes will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Reformed Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Reformed Church, United Church of Christ, Sound System, 13182 Salem Road, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Thurman P. Cline

SHARPSBURG - Thurman Philip Cline, 76, of 6705 Sharpsburg Pike, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at Saint Joseph Medical Center, Baltimore.

Born Nov. 8, 1922 in Downsville, Md., he was the son of the late David Frederick and Beulah Catherine Bowers Cline.

He owned and operated his farm until retiring in 1995.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Downsville Christian Church for more than 60 years, where he served on the choir and as a trustee and was an elder and held the title elder emeritus.

He was a member of Medairy Lodge 140 A.F.&A.M., Williamsport, former member and Past Master of Eureka Lodge 105 A.F.&A.M., Sharpsburg, Antietam Post 236 American Legion, Sharpsburg, Washington County Farm Bureau and MD-VA Milk Association for over 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Jane Miner Cline, six sisters, Waunita R. Martin of Hancock, M. Betty Kitchen and Varerie C. Malott, both of Williamsport, Dorothy M. Shinham of Sharpsburg, Shelby J. Stehl and Connie L. Martin, both of Hagerstown; five brothers, Omer C. Cline of Fayetteville, Pa., Ellis T. Cline and E. Ross Cline, both of Hagerstown, Lloyd M. Cline of Smithsburg and Walter L. Cline of Funkstown; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Edgar M. Cline.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Downsville Christian Church, Downsville Pike, Downsville. The Rev. E. Reese Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The funeral home will be open Tuesday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends. Masonic services will be conducted Tuesday at 7 p.m. by Medairy Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Downsville Christian Church, 8641 Downsville Pike, Downsville MD 21795.

Evelyn L. Reynolds

FREDERICK, Md. - Evelyn L. Reynolds, 77, of 511 Wilson Place, Frederick, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick.

Born Dec. 12, 1921, in Frederick County, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Carrie Agnes Hutts Grams.

She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and Wide Awake Sunday School Class. She volunteered at Calvary United Methodist Church and Citizens Nursing Home.

She is survived by her husband, Adrian William Reynolds, whom she married in 1940; two daughters, Patricia Lipps of Frederick and Adrienne Yount of Annapolis; two sons, Edward William Reynolds of Union Bridge, Md., and Kenny A. Reynolds of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was the last of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 1201 North Market St., Frederick. The Rev. Robert E. Manthey will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph F. Eakle, Jr.

BOONSBORO - Joseph F. "Junie" Eakle, Jr., 72, of 110 Orchard Drive, Apartment B, Boonsboro, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at his home.

Born Jan. 19, 1927, in Reid, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph R. Sr., and Mary McDowell Eakle.

He had been a farmer in the Benevola and Leitersburg areas and was later employed by Cochran Auctions and Boonsboro Produce, Boonsboro.

He was a member of Leitersburg Lutheran Church.

He was a member of Washington County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys L. Smith Eakle, whom he married in 1955; one step-son, John E. Scott of Rouzerville, Pa.; two brothers, Richard L. Eakle of Hagerstown and Harold E. Eakle of Waynesboro, Pa.; two step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Mausoleum, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

James L. Smith, Jr.

James Lindsay Smith, Jr., 55, of 11710 Robinwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Aug. 31, 1943 in Hagerstown, he was the son of Anna Jean Morgan Smith and the late James L. Smith, Sr.

He was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was of the Catholic faith.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by one sister, Patricia Ann Smith of Randallstown, Md.; several nieces, a nephew and aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Christine Marie Smith.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown.

There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association of Maryland, 11 Columbia Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Martha I. Miller

SMITHSBURG - Martha Irene "Renie" Miller, 87, of 64 East Water Street, Smithsburg, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at Washington County Hospital. She resided with her daughter, Anna Mae McSherry.

Born Jan. 26, 1912, in Welsh Run, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Alfred Bruce and Lillie Viola Mummert Provard.

She was retired from Hagerstown Shoe Company in 1973, after 44 years of service.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hagerstown.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by another daughter, Mildred Stavros of Newtown, Pa.; one sister, Charlotte P. Aldridge of Hagerstown; four grandchildren, whom she helped raise; Shirley Ann Turner of Sharpsburg, Barbara Rohrer of Hagerstown, Linda Williams of Clear Spring and Larry McSherry of Smithsburg; two other grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a special niece.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Virgie Viola Deardorf, Anna Catherine Orcutt, Lovena Mae Markle, and Jeanetta Blanche Whorton; and four brothers, William Alfred Provard, Arthur Clarence Provard, John McDonald Provard and Richard Leroy Provard.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lester G. Stouffer

Lester G. Stouffer, 86, of 517 Frederick Street, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.

Born Dec. 18, 1912, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Elam M. and Alice M. Heintzelman Stouffer.

He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of service.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II in Italy with the 91st Infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was a member of First Christian Church for 30 years.

He was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, Fraternal Order of Police, Pioneer Hook and Ladder Fire Company, all of Hagerstown, American Legion Post 211, Funkstown.

He is survived his wife of 68 years, Lillian I. Stickler Stouffer; two daughters, Connie L. Diseati of Hagerstown, and Donna L. Nikirk of Ijamsville, Md.; one sister, Helen Mowbrey of Hagerstown; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Lester G. Stouffer, Jr., and one sister, Vada Brandenburg.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave. The Rev. Fred M. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
