Ernest Freeland II
Ernest P. "Ernie" Freeland II, 64, of Fredericksburg, Va., and formerly of Annapolis, died of natural causes Feb. 10, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Freeland was born Nov. 28, 1937, in Leaksburg, Va., and received a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University at Raleigh. He was an Army veteran.
Mr. Freeland was vice president of sales at S.M.I. Rebar in Virginia.
He was a member of Spotswood Baptist Church in Fredericksburg.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Elizabeth Freeland; one son, Ernest P. Freeland III of Riva; one stepson, Paul R. "Chip" Norris Jr. of the home; two stepdaughters, Melody Norris Higgins of Ellicott City and Michelle Norris Jedlicka of Newport News, Va.; his mother, Julia Moss Freeland of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Robert Freeland of Charlotte and Joseph Freeland of Manassas, Va.; one sister, Judy Hardesty of Silver Spring; and two grandchildren.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Covenant Funeral Service, 4801 Jeff Davis Highway, Fredericksburg. A memorial service will be at noon Saturday at Spotswood Baptist Church.

Florence Lyle
Florence Beatrice Lyle, 85, of Glen Burnie, died of natural causes Feb. 12, 2002 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.
Mrs. Lyle was born Jan. 1, 1917, in Butler, Pa., the daughter of the late Harry O. and Charlotte Bricker Genter.
She worked for 27 years for Anne Arundel County government, retiring as a purchasing agent.
She was a past president of the Auxiliary of North Arundel Hospital and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Glen Burnie Elks lodge. Her interests also included knitting, ceramics, volunteering, travel and spending time with family.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Lyle; one son, Gary Lyle of Pasadena; one sister, Agnes Glass of Perry Hall; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 tonight and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Singleton Funeral Home, 1 Second Ave. SW, Glen Burnie. A Mass of Christian burial willl be offered at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, Glen Burnie. Burial will be in Meadowridge Cemetery in Elkridge.

Robert Moreland
Robert Lee Moreland, 70, a resident of Annapolis for 42 years, died of heart failure Feb. 11, 2002 at the Washington, D.C., Hospital Center after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 20, 1931, in Lothian, Mr. Moreland served in the Army during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956. He worked as an engineer for the Maryland State Highway Administration.
He was a member of Mount Zion United Methdist Church in Lothian, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 304 and the Annapolis Moose Lodge. He enjoyed gardening, yard sales and crabbing.
Surviving are one son, Jeff Moreland of Arnold; one daughter, Debbie Moreland of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one brother, William Moreland of Annapolis; and one sister, Myra Virginia Fisher of Reston, Va.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 122 Bayard Road, Lothian, MD 20711.

Jennie Purdy
Jeannie Frances Cole Purdy, 93, of Churchton and formerly of Cheverly, died of pneumonia Feb. 11, 2002 at Villa Rosa nursing home in Mitchellville.
Mrs. Purdy was born Nov. 17, 1908, in Coles County, Ill. She attended Eastern Illinois Normal School and George Washington University and received a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Maryland.
She taught in public schools in Mattoon, Ill., and then at Cheverly Elementary School.
Mrs. Purdy was a longtime member of Cheverly United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Briner Circle. She also was a member of the Winterport, Maine, Methodist Church. Her interests included china painting, quilting and caning chairs.
Her husband of 60 years, Thomas Murray Purdy, was the chief of the tree section for the National Capital Area of the U.S. Park Service, which included maintenance of the White House grounds, and was in charge of erecting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse for many years. Mr. Purdy died in July 2000.
Surviving are two sons, Lawrence Cole Purdy of Churchton and Thomas Michael Purdy of Springfield, Va.; and one granddaughter.
Services are private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Anne Arundel Unit, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.

Ann Randall
Ann Alfreda Randall, 54, died Feb. 9, 2002 at her home in Annapolis. The cause of death was not available.
Born June 6, 1947 in Annapolis, Mrs. Randall was the daughter of Viola Johnson of Annapolis and the late William A. Johnson. She graduated from the former Wiley H. Bates High School in 1965.
She worked for 15 years at the Mill End Shop of Annapolis as an interior decorator.
She was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Her interests included sewing, family gatherings, bingo, softball, dancing and interior decorating.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Lamont Randall Sr.; two daughters, Crystal and Celestine "Cessy" Randall; one son, Lamont "Charlee" Randall Jr.; two sisters, Brenda Cully and Gwendolyn Johnson, all of Annapolis; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday with a Christian wake at 10:30 a.m. and funeral services at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 87 West St. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Ada Smisson
Ada C. Smisson, 92, of Dover, Del., and formerly of Annapolis, died Feb. 11, 2002 in Kent General Hospital in Dover.
Mrs. Smisson was born in Shenandoah, Pa., to the late Joseph and Madeline Kalnoske. She had lived in Fort Valley, Ga., for 17 years and in Annapolis from 1977 to 1995 when she moved to Dover.
She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as a lieutenant and nurse.
She worked as a registered nurse for 10 years at Anne Arundel General Hospital, and as a nurse anesthetist for 10 years in the dental offices of Dr. Victor Leocha.
Mrs. Smisson was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She also enjoyed attending and helping with functions for the Lion and Elks clubs. She was known for helping people in need.
Her husband of 49 years, Charlie Thomas Smisson Sr., died Dec. 2, 1996.
Surviving are her son, Charlie Thomas Smisson Jr. of Dover; her daughter, Mary Anne Wagner of Byron, Ga.; a sister, Estelle Lange of Silver Spring; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 South State St., Dover. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Feb. 27 in Arlington National Cemetery.

Rose Brown
Rose "Nannie" Brown, 83, of Annapolis, died of natural causes Feb. 11, 2001 at her home after a brief illness.
Born June 20, 1917, in Owensville, Mrs. Brown attended the former Ralph J. Bunche School. She was a cook and a domestic worker. She enjoyed cooking and reading the Bible.
She was a former member of Fowler's United Methodist Church and Calvert Fellowship Church in Prince Frederick and was a current member of the Light of the World Family Ministries. She belonged to the Chancel Choir, was a church mother, a communion steward, member of the Pastor Parish Committee, the United Methodist Women and named Mother of the Year.
Surviving are three sons. Daniel and Thomas Galloway and Marcellus Collins, and two daughters, Rosemary Brooks and Marguerite Ireland, all of Annapolis; one brother, Daniel Randall of Harwood; 39 grandchildren; 72 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Charles and John Collins and Marice Downs and the sister of the late Celia Harvey.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Holy Temple Cathedral of God, 708 Bestgate Road, where a Christian wake will be at 11:30 a.m. followed by services at noon. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Elmer Butler
Elmer G. Butler, 80, of Odenton died of heart failure Feb. 12, 2001 at North Arundel Hospital.
Born Jan. 23, 1921 in Gambrills, Mr. Butler served as a sergeant in the Air Force during World War II.
He was a federal employee at Fort Meade and upon retirement he became self-employed as owner and operator of Butler Carpet Cleaning Service. He was also former manager at Bowl America in Odenton.
Mr. Butler was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was past president, secretary and treasurer of the Pioneer Bowling League in Odenton.
He was an avid bowler and enjoyed baseball and watching television.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Butler, who died in 1991, and his son, Kevin Butler.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Butler of Gambrills, Stephen F. Butler of Yarmouth, Mass., and Warren Butler of Dennis, Mass.; two daughters, Carol Halsey of Grasonville and Mary Butler of Odenton; his brother, Stephen Butler of Gambrills; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road, Gambrills. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1283 Odenton Road, Odenton, followed by burial at Bethel Cemetery, Fort Meade.

Pearl Coats
Pearl Dorothy Coats, 84, of Annapolis, died Feb. 10, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of natural causes.
Mrs. Coates was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Bridgeport, Conn., and lived in Okeechobee, Fla., before moving to Annapolis five years ago.
She enjoyed playing cards and fishing.
She was married in April 1969 to Russell Coats who died in August 1996.
Surviving are a son, Barry Silverman of Annapolis; a daughter, Margo Kay Donithan of Annapolis; a stepson, Russell Coats of Carlsbad, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Colleen Crawford of Los Angeles, Calif.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Americanb Cancer Society, 346 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park, MD 21146.

Charles Creek
The Rev. Charles W. Creek, 79, of Severna Park, who was a pastor for several area Methodist churches, died of respiratory illness Feb. 11, 2001 at North Arundel Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born April 9, 1921, in the Mount Tabor area of the county, Rev. Creek graduated in 1937 from the former Wiley H. Bates High School. He also attended pastor's school at Bennett College, graduated from Anne Arundel Community College in 1978 and attended a number of seminars at Drew University.
He was the former pastor of Ebenezer-Sparrow's Point United Methodist Church in Baltimore, Fowler's United Methodist Church in Annapolis, Union Memorial United Methodist Church in Davidsonville, Wilson Memorial United Methodist Church in Gambrills, Eastern United Methodist Church in Baltimore and Sharp Street United Methodist Church of Sandy Springs.
He retired in 1975 as a grounds supervisor from the Naval Academy where he worked for 34years.
During World War II he served in the Army's 870th Engineer Aviation Battalion where he supervised the installation of electrical equipment in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of operations.
An avid reader, he had a vast collection of books, audio materials and antique Bibles. Interested in U.S. history, he enjoyed traveling and touring historic places.
His first wife, the former Thelma P. Duvall, died in 1975. He married Jean A. Creek on May 19, 1976.
Also surviving are two stepsons, Antonio R. Womack and Jerry D. Womack Jr.
Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church, 87 West St., with a Christian wake at 6 p.m. and funeral service at 7 p.m. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Joseph Howlin
Joseph Robert "Bud" Howlin Sr., 78, a longtime resident of Edgewater and formerly of Kentland, died of a heart ailment Feb. 11, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical center.
Born Sept. 8, 1922, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Howlin graduated from Mount Rainier High School. He was a sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II.
From 1952 to 1968 he was the owner and operator of Howlin Seafood in Landover. Subsequently he was a steamfitter with Union Local 602 from 1968 to 1986 when he retired.
Mr. Howlin was past president and house chairman of the Mayo Kiwanis Club. His interests were golf, playing horseshoes, fishing, crabbing, water sports and doing community service at the Kiwanis Club.
On Dec. 5, 1942, he was married to Rita M. Howlin. Also surviving are one son, Joseph R. Howlin J. of Edgewater; two daughters, Sheila M. Messineo of Edgewater and Carole A. Fox of Crownsville; two sisters, Mary Nicholson of Annapolis and Louise Ball of Lewisdale; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 236, Edgewater, MD 21037.

Patricia Jones
Patricia Watkins Jones, 48, of Glen Burnie, died Feb. 8 at United of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Jones was born July 24, 1952, in Annapolis, and lived in Glen Burnie for the past two years. She was a member of Pillar of Truth Church in Baltimore.
She was divorced in 1985 from Vance Jones Sr.
Surviving are three sons, Vance T. Jones Jr. and Marque Jones of Glen Burnie and Maurice Jones of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three brothers, Clifton Watkins of Annapolis, Ronald Watkins of Aberdeen and Gerald Watkins of Pasadena; two sisters, Aleta Harrison of Glen Burnie and Helen Wilson of Odenton; and six grandchildren. She was the daughter of Lucretia Matthews Watkins and Ernest N. Watkins Sr.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St. A Christian wake will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at Pillar of Truth Church, 2505-09 E. Madison St., Baltimore, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens.

Robert Raines
Robert Eugene Raines, 70, of Ballard, W.Va., died Feb. 9, 2001 at his home. The cause of death was unavailable.
Born May 8, 1930, at Junta, W.Va., Mr. Raines was the son of the late John Theodore and Lou Lilly Raines and stepmother Woodsie Ellis Raines.
He was a retired Navy veteran and Civil Service employee with more than 40 years of combined service. He served aboard the battleships USS Missouri and USS New Jersey and on the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga.
He received the Korean Service Medal and two Navy Expeditionary Medals, one for his service in Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis and the other for service in the Congo.
While living in Indian Head, he was a rigging foreman at the Naval Academy and was attached to the Seabees at Little Creek, Va.
He loved children and worked with youth in football, baseball and Boy Scouts.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by twin sons.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret E. Grim Raines; four sons, Robert Eugene Raines Jr. of Indian Head, Donald Wayne Raines of Laurel, Ronald Lee Raines of Virginia Beach, Va., and Thomas Dean Raines of Stevensville; three brothers, Dean Raines of Cleves, Ohio, Noah Raines of Logan, W.Va., and Gary Wayne Raines of Beckley, W.Va.; four sisters, Florence Grim of Locust Grove, Va., JoAn Biggs of Burtonsville, Jane Kosa of King George, Va., and Patricia Donahue of Roanoke, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 111 Market St., Peterson, W.Va., where services will be at 6 p.m. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenbrier Valley Hospice, 203 S. Jefferson St., Lewisburg, WW 24901.
