Sarah Y. Kane

CAMBRIDGE - Sarah Young Kane, 99, died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital.

She was born May 5, 1903 in Dorchester County, the third of 12 children born to Isaac and Linda Young.

Mrs. Kane was a life-long resident of Dorchester County. Upon completion of her formal education she worked for a short period of time in Baltimore, but returned to Dorchester County to work in the local industries.

For much of her adult life, Mrs. Kane was the victim of ill health and her latter years were spent as a resident of a nursing home. She and her siblings faithfully attended church. She became a Christian at an early age.

In the late 1920s she became the wife of Dorsey Kane, who preceded her in death. She had one son, Charles, who also preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the National Church of God in East New Market with Elder Howard Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at the Young Memorial Park in East New Market.

The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.

The Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge is handling the arrangements.

Wallace E. Thompson Jr.

Wallace E. Thompson Jr. passed away Saturday, June 8, 2002.

He was born Jan. 26, 1975 in Cambridge, son of Elder Wallace E. Thompson Sr. and the late Ernestine Thompson.

Mr. Thompson attended the public schools in Dorchester County and was a graduate of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, Class of 1993. While attending high school, Mr. Thompson played on the football, basketball, track and field teams. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Who's Who Among High School Students and received numerous awards and honors for his academic and athletic achievements.

In 1997, Mr. Thompson graduated with joint degrees from Salisbury State University and the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, with a bachelor of arts in sociology and a bachelor of arts in criminal justice, respectively.

While attending college, Mr. Thompson was considered an outstanding football player, track and field member and received numerous honors such as: Athletic Scholar Award, Player of the Year, Division III; DCAC Player of the Year and Punt Returner for 1996-1997.

After college, Mr. Thompson pursued a professional football career and was actively recruited by the teams with the Canadian Football League, XFL, NFL Europe and the NFL but refused many contract offers. He eventually played with the Peninsula Power while working as a physical education instructor at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School. Mr. Thompson was a free agent at the time of his death.

Because of Mr. Thompson's love of working with children and their families, he continued his teaching career at the Paul Junior High School in Washington, D.C. as a special education and history teacher where he was working at the time of his death. He was also the high school track coach at Wilson High School in Washington, D.C. Mr. Thompson previously worked as a juvenile counselor for the Department of Juvenile Justice, State of Maryland.

In addition to his father, Mr. Thompson is survived by a son, Na'ail; a sister, Elayna (Darryl) Wilson; his soul mate, Rhonda Thompson; grandmothers, Rosie Cornish and Lillian Jolley; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, at Bethel AME Church. The Rev. Keith Cornish will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant UM Church Cemetery. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service.

The Henry Funeral Home is handling all funeral arrangements.

Miriam L. Burton

SALISBURY - Miriam L. Burton, 94, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at Atria Assisted Living Center.

She was born in Delmar, Del., the daughter of the late John Frank and Mary Anna Parker Long. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charley Hayman Taylor, who died in 1954 and her second husband, Edward Carroll Burton who died in 1974.

Mrs. Burton was a former employee of the Salisbury National Bank. She was a partner with her husband, Charley Taylor in Taylor Electric Co. She was a life-long member of Bethesda United Methodist Church and the Altar Guild.

Mrs. Burton is survived by a stepson, Edward Burton Jr. of Cambridge; a sister, Emily L. Smith of Quantico; brother, Sen. Joseph J. Long Sr. of Salisbury; eight nieces and nephews, Robert Taylor of Salisbury, Patricia Sadowski of Homosossa, Fla., Edwina Davis of Powellville, Pat Pulice of Long Beach, Calif., Miriam Wheeler of Staten Island, N.Y., Joanne Laubisch of Cincinnati, Joseph J. Long Jr. of Delmar and John M. Long of Salisbury; and six step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Robert Burton; two brothers, Frank Long Jr. and Gilbert Long and a sister, Anna Long Fay.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

The Rev. Dr. Robert L. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Bethesda United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 406 N. Division St., Salisbury, MD 21801.

Theodore W. Hill Sr.

BALTIMORE - Theodore Wilbert Hill Sr., passed away Friday, June 14, 2002 at his home in Baltimore.

He was born Aug. 15, 1935 in Baltimore.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Delema Hill; three daughters, Patricia Hill, Feleica Carter, Tia Pierson; one son, Dale Hill and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services were held in Baltimore.

Burial will take place at noon Thursday in Old Field Cemetery.

Local arrangements are being handled by the Boardley Funeral Home.

Earl F. Dayton

QUEENSTOWN - Earl F. Dayton, 77, passed away Monday, June 17, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. He had been in failing health for the past three years.

He was born May 12, 1925 in Cambridge, the son of the late Charley and Nervenia Parks Dayton.

Mr. Dayton had attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from Sept. 8, 1943 until June 10, 1946. While he was in the military he was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Germany), European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon as well as the World War II Victory Medal.

After his discharge from the service Mr. Dayton worked for the Phillips Packing Co. in Cambridge and later had worked as a waterman and a carpenter. Later he had worked for the Chris Craft Corp. in Salisbury. Mr. Dayton also worked for the Maryland Natural Resources Police from 1960 until 1987. When he retired he had attained the rank of captain and was commander of the Upper Eastern Shore Area.

Mr. Dayton married the former Ruth Stack on Sept. 25, 1947. She passed away on June 17, 1968.

He was a member of the Retired Natural Resources Police Association and the Chester River Yacht and Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf.

Mr. Dayton is survived by a daughter, Ruth D. Jeffries and her husband, Barry W. Jeffries of Greensboro; a son, Michael F. Dayton and his wife, Diane Dayton of Hurlock; two grandsons, Matthew B. Jeffries of Greensboro and Brian Dayton of Hurlock; one sister, Ruth Marshall of Cambridge; one brother, Robert Dayton of Satellite Beach, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Bradford and four brothers, Charley Dayton, Herbert Dayton, Oscar Dayton and Edwin L. Dayton.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with David L. Kreek officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service on Thursday.

Memorial contributions can be made to Kent Island United Methodist Church Community Projects Fund, Chester, MD 21619.

Pallbearers will be members of the Maryland Natural Resources Police.

Sarah E. Friend

PRESTON - Sarah Elizabeth Friend, 70, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at her residence.

She was born May 19, 1932 in Easton, the daughter of the late Robert C. Elliott and Luvenia L. Wilson Elliott.

Mrs. Friend had previously worked as a nurse's aide at the Eastern Shore State Hospital in Cambridge. She had worked for over 30 years as a ward clerk at Easton Memorial Hospital. Most recently, she had served as a private sitter at William Hill Manor in Easton.

Mrs. Friend was a member at Mt. Calvary UM Church in Preston where she served in the Women's Society.

She is survived by her husband, Ellsworth Albert Friend Sr., whom she married on Oct. 2, 1948; three children: Kenneth M. Friend, Peggy Ann Friend Wilson, both of Easton and Ellsworth Albert Friend Jr. of Preston; 10 grandchilden; seven great-grandchilden; three sisters, Florence P. Moaney and Corinne E. Blackwell, both of Easton and Joyce M. Wright of Hurlock.

Mrs. Friend was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert J. Elliott and Robert H. Elliott.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Mt. Calvary UM Church in Preston with the Rev. Joseph Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Preston.

Friends may call at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Carroll J. Lewis

CAMBRIDGE - Carroll J. Lewis, 77, of Aireys Road, passed away Monday, June 17, 2002 at The Pines - Genesis Elder Care in Easton.

He was the husband of the late Florentine J. Lewis.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Shirley A. Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary L. Egerson

QUEEN ANNE - Mary Louise "Tiny" Egerson, 78, passed away Sunday, June 16, 2002 at the Milford Memorial Hospital in Milford, Del.

She was born July 31, 1923, the daughter of the late Albert Thomas and Sarah Groce. She received her education in Caroline County public schools. She worked in domestic situations and as a factory worker in various canning companies in Maryland.

Mrs. Egerson was a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary at Mannie Scott Post 193 in Denton.

In May of 1947 she married James R. Egerson Sr., who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Egerson is survived by four sons: James R. Egerson Jr. (Junior) of Cambridge, John F. Egerson (Johnny) of Greenwood, Del., Ernest N. Egerson (Ernie) of Ridgely and Albert E. Egerson of Denton; five daughters: Gloria A. Egerson of Queen Anne, Mary V. Egerson (Ginger) of Greenwood, Del., Sylvia E. Egerson of Killeen, Texas, Sarah L. Wright of Denton and Margaret P. E. Williams of Frederick. She is also survived by one stepdaughter, Joan Egerson of California; one special nephew, Gary Maddox; one brother, Albert Thomas; one sister, Catherine Friend; two brothers-in-law, Norman and Hobart Egerson; one sister-in-law, Lillian Egerson; two aunts, Adeline Jenkins and Frances Jones; two sons-in-law; three daughters-in-law; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

Mrs. Egerson was preceded in death by two sons, William H. "Pete" Thomas and Charles Edward Thomas; a daughter, Betty Jean and her sister, Della Thomas.

Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home on Dover Street in Easton.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Allen's AME Church in Hillsboro with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Hurlock.

Carroll J. Lewis

CAMBRIDGE - Carroll J. Lewis, 77, of Aireys Road, passed away on Monday, June 17, 2002 at the Pines-Genesis Elder Care in Easton. He had been in failing health since April, and had been a patient at the Pines for one week.

He was born March 30, 1925 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Carroll F. and Beatrice Windridge Lewis.

Mr. Lewis had graduated from DuPont High School in 1943. During World War II he had served in the U.S. Army from August 1943 until November 1945 with the 95th Infantry Division and saw combat in France and Germany.

Mr. Lewis was awarded the Bronze Star and the Rifleman's Combat Badge. After World War II, he graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. in 1948.

From 1951 until 1962 Mr. Lewis had worked for Westinghouse Electric Supply Co. He worked for Sears Roebuck from 1963 until 1971.

Then from 1971 until 1973, he operated a burglar alarm business in Ocean City. Mr. Lewis returned to Sears in August of 1973 until he retired in 1988.

He married the former Florentine Johnson on July 21, 1961. She passed away on April 25, 1999.

Mr. Lewis was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church, where he had served as lay leader, on the Administrative Board and in various other offices. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity in college, Cambridge Lodge No. 1272 B.P.O.E., Cambridge Yacht Club and the Dorchester Post 91 American Legion.

He had worked as a volunteer for the Salvation Army for many years. For a number of years he had enjoyed traveling and had spent the winters in Florida.

His survivors include two sons, James Wayne Lewis of Wilmington, Del. and Robert J. Murphy of Cambridge; three daughters, Maricarole Lewis Jones of Cambridge, Carole M. Jones of East New Market and Ann M. Sessoms of Cambridge. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and two nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Gregory W. Jones and a sister, Shirley L. Zigmont.

A funeral service w ill be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Shirley A. Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friendship United Methodist Church, c/o Roxanne Snelling, 5426 Chateau Road, East New Market, MD 21631 or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 91, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Pallbearers will be Michael Fay, James Lewis, Jonathan Jones, R. J. Murphy, Doug Tompkins, Robert J. Murphy, Jay Jones and Garland Jones.

Mabel V. Jones

CAMBRIDGE - Mabel V. Jones, 88, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

William S. Pinder

QUANTICO, Va. - William S. Pinder, 69, died Friday, May 31, 2002.

He was born Dec. 18, 1932 in Hurlock, son of the late Woodland and Carvilla Pinder.

Mr. Pinder began his education at Hurlock Elementary School and graduated from St. Clair High School in Cambridge. He served with the United States Marine Corps for 31 years.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Tindley and Bessie Pinder of Preston; two sisters, Alberta and Geneva Pinder of Bethlehem and several nieces, nephews and other family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Felton Pinder.

Memorial services for Gunnery Sergeant Pinder were held June 6 in Triangle, Va. Burial followed at the Marine Base Cemetery in Quantico, Va.

Mary E. Zimmerman

LINKWOOD - Mary E. Zimmerman, 88, died Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge.

She was born July 31, 1913 in East New Market, the daughter of the late William Thomas Whitten and Bessie Marine Whitten.

Mrs. Zimmerman attended Sunnyside Alliance Church in Secretary. She was an honorary member of the Linkwood-Salem Volunteer Fire Company.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Joan Ann and Nathan S. Collins of Linkwood; two granddaughters, Leann Lewis and her husband, John of East New Market and Kara Lynn Collins of Linkwood; two great-grandchildren, Blake Kendall Lewis and Karli D. Lewis, both of East New Market.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee T. Zimmerman who died on June 7, 1996; one brother, Arthur Spencer Whitten and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market with Daniel Webster officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will follow in Dorchester Memorial Park.

William J. Gullion Sr.

CERES, Va. - William Jackson Gullion Sr., 66, formerly of Dorchester County, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2002 at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, Va.

He was born July 15, 1935 in Marion, Va., son of the late Robert and Annie Tibbs Gullion.

Mr. Gullion was a self employed heavy equipment operator. He moved to Dorchester County in the early 1970s and in the mid 1980s moved to Florida where he lived until two years ago when he moved to Marion, Va.

Mr. Gullion is survived by three sons, William Jackson Gullion Jr. of Secretary, John Lincoln Gullion of Hurlock, Thomas Michael Gullion of Frederick; one daughter, Melissa Gaye Andress of Florida; two brothers, Emory Gullion of Aberdeen and Earl Gullion of Cambridge; four sisters, Shirley Laird of Darlington, Anna Mae Parks of Dublin, Louise Hall of Churchville, Liza Polumbo of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many special friends, including Ruth Gullion, his first wife and mother of his children of Cambridge and Sylvia Slaughter of Ceres, Va.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ellis Gullion and Delmar Gullion and two sisters, Ruthie Gullion and Edna Dye.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market with the Rev. Gene Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in Dorchester Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Susie F. Gray

ELLIOTT ISLAND - Graveside services were held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Dorchester Memorial Park in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating for Susie Frances Gray, 86, who died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.

Pallbearers were Chester Martinek, Howard Martinek, David Jones, Waner Waller, John Peddicord and Paul Sipple.

She was born on Elliott Island on Jan. 28, 1916, the daughter of the late Thomas G. Waller and Carrie Gray Waller.

Mrs. Gray worked for Elliott Brothers on the island until the early 1960s. She was later employed at Meredith & Meredith in Toddville, having retired in 1994.

Estelle J. LeCompte

CAMBRIDGE - Estelle J. LeCompte, 90, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital. She had been a resident at the Mallard Bay Care Center since January and was a patient at Dorchester General Hospital.

She was born Sept. 14, 1911 at Aireys, and was a daughter of the late Herman Sidney and Nannie Spedden Johnson.

Mrs. LeCompte had attended schools in Cambridge. She was first married to Joseph Cator Robinson on Sept. 13, 1929, who passed away on Jan. 21, 1970. She later married Joseph N. LeCompte on Nov. 30, 1956. He passed away on June 17, 1988.

Mrs. LeCompte had been a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, and also Antioch United Methodist Church.

She had worked at Rob Roy in Cambridge for nearly 50 years when she retired some years ago. Mrs. LeCompte enjoyed crocheting and knitting and also enjoyed canning different types of food.

Survivors include a daughter, Etta R. Cox and her husband, Donald H. Cox of Cambridge; one son, Melvin C. Robinson of Cambridge; seven grandchildren: Steve Robinson, Mary Jane Cox Bilz, William C. Robinson, Debbie R. Todd, Donna C. McConnell, Donald H. Cox Jr. and Frances Stevens; 13 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Marydel Russell of Baltimore; two brothers, H. Sidney Johnson and Kenneth Johnson, both of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, a twin sister, Louise North and Virginia Frase; four brothers, Philip M. Johnson, James I. "Sarge" Johnson, Calvert "Skeeter" Johnson and Joseph A. Johnson.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery with the Rev. Gloria S. Attix officiating. There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Jennifer Estelle McConnell Trust Fund, c/o Donna C. McConnell, 5416 Cannon Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Antioch United Methodist Church, c/o Susan Meredith, 5413 Town Point Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
