JAMES A. AVIRETT
CUMBERLAND - James Alfred Avirett of Cumberland, died at his home on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001.
Born on April 11, 1910, he was the son of John Williams Avirett, founder and editor of The Cumberland Evening Times, and Sarah D. Avirett-Thomas.
He began practicing law in Cumberland after graduating from Harvard Law School in 1936, and except for military service during World War II, continued to practice at his office at One Washington Street until his death. He attended the Allegany Academy, Allegany High School in Cumberland, and Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Princeton University in 1933, where he was an editorial writer for the Daily Princetonian and a member of the Princeton Glee Club. At Harvard Law School, Mr. Avirett studied under several of the great architects of American Law, including Justice Felix Frankfurter, Dean Roscoe Pound and Professor Samuel Williston.
During his practice in Cumberland, Mr. Avirett served for 30 years with the U.S. Department of Justice as the United States Commissioner and U.S. Magistrate for western Maryland. In Cumberland, he was a legal counsel for Columbia Gas of Maryland, the LaVale Sanitary Commission and Allegany Community College. He also was a member of the bar of the Federal Communications Commission.
In addition, he served as the chair of the Municipal Planning and Zoning Commission of Cumberland, the chair of the Board of the Cumberland Free Library and the Allegany County Library System, and was a member of the Maryland State Library Commission. He was a member of Rotary International for more than 30 years, and was a Paul Harris Fellow, in recognition of his contribution to the community.
He was a life long member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a member of the vestry for many years.
In December 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army and reported for Fort Eustis for training in anti-aircraft artillery. While in basic training, he was commissioned to First Lieutenant and sent to the University of Michigan Law School at Ann Arbor to study military law. He then served as a JAG officer at Fort Meade and as Staff Judge Advocate at Camp Pickett, Va., with the rank of Major.
In 1942, he married Salena Sarah Sharp of Cumberland. She predeceased him on June 28, 1999. Survivors include three children, Sarah Avirett Hoover of Baltimore, Anne Avirett Dilts of Bloomington, Ind., and James Alfred Avirett Jr. of Baltimore; five grandchildren, Christopher Dunbar Dilts, Andrew Thomas Dilts, James Alfred Avirett III, John Charles Avirett and Carrie Suzanne Avirett. He also is survived by his nephew, Hume Opie Annan of Fort Ashby, W.Va.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial services will be at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Edward Chapman officiating. Following this service the family will greet friends at the church Parish Hall.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Allegany County Library System, 31 Washington St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

TAWNY D. WILBURN
SWANTON - Tawnya D. Wilburn, 32, of Brant Road, Swanton, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at the Garrett Memorial Hospital, Oakland. Born on Dec. 9, 1968, in Oakland, she is the daughter of Shirley J. (Brant) Wilburn, Swanton, and the late Claude W. Wilburn. She was a member of the Meadow Mountain Mennonite Church, attended the Hagerstown Business College and was a former trust secretary at First United Bank and Trust, Oakland.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one sister, Valerie A. Savage, Swanton; one brother, John W. Wilburn, Terra Alta, W.Va.; and maternal grandmothers, Cecelia (Friend) Brant, Accident, and Charlotte (Kisner)(Wilburn) Wahl, Stockton, Calif. Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Meadow Mountain Mennonite Church on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Duane Frederick, the Rev. Glen Dumire, the Rev. Paul Yoder and the Rev. Edgar Miller officiating.
Interment will be in Thayerville Cemetery. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Eric Savage, Bobby Wilt, Gary Friend, Kenny Reams, Bobby Filsinger and Brady Brant.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Southern Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550.

EUGENE F. HAINES
CRESAPTOWN - Eugene Franklin Haines, 63, of Cresaptown, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Sacred Heart Hospital.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Peters officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland. Following the services at the cemetery the family invites all relatives and friends to join them in a fellowship luncheon at Rawlings United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be Charles Lanham, nephew, Mark Flynn, brothers-in-law, John Ludwick, Alan Durr, Delmar Ackerman, Charles Martin, and honorary pallbearer, Phil Jordan.

H. IRET MARTIN
OAKLAND - H. Iret Martin, 72, of Bellview, Fla., formerly of Oakland, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at his home in Florida.
Born in Oakland, on Sept. 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Hubert Martin and Lola (Ramsey) Martin.
Mr. Martin was a retired auto body repairman. He was a member of the Oakland Elks # 2481.
Surviving are one son, Kenneth Martin and wife Cindy, Columbia; one daughter, Kay Martin, Romney, W.Va.; one brother, Delano Martin, Oakland; one sister, Sharon Arnold, Oakland; and one grandson, Chris Martin.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Skipper officiating.
Interment will be in the Friend Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

STANLEY W. EISEL
FROSTBURG - Stanley William "Bizz" Eisel, 79, of 170 Frost Ave., Frostburg, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Memorial Hospital. Born on April 11, 1921, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late William Stanley and Nellie (Brode) Eisel. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Teresa (Patterson) Eisel on Feb. 3, 2000; and one daughter, LeDene Eisel.
Mr. Eisel was retired from Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, where he worked in security. He also was owner/operator of Rock Hill Riding Stables and Farm, Frostburg, and was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Eisel was a member and longtime deacon of the First English Baptist Church, Frostburg, and member of the Farrady Post 24, American Legion.
He is survived by one son, Stanley "Butch" Eisel and wife Gloria, Frostburg; one granddaughter, Sarah Eisel, Frostburg; three sisters, June Price, Wilda Delaney and Sarah Nelson, all of Frostburg; and several nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, Enoch "Juney" Price.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David Sandvick officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. Members of Farrady Post 24 Honor Guard will accord military honors at graveside. Family and friends will be invited to the First English Baptist Church for a post-funeral luncheon.
Memorial contributions in memory of "Bizz" may be directed to the First English Baptist Church, 136 E. Main St., Frostburg, MD 21532.

RALPH E. RICE
KEYSER, W.Va. - Ralph E. "Rock" Rice, 65, of 118 Potomac Drive, Keyser, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on June 25, 1935, in Keyser, he was a son of the late Claude E. and Cora Pauline (Barr) Rice. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Devilbliss.
Mr. Rice was retired from the Westvaco Corp., with 32 years of service in the 8 & 9 Calendar rooms. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the military for 30 years, retiring with an E-7 rating and rank of Sgt. First Class. He was a 1953 graduate of Keyser High School and attended Potomac State College and served as a West Virginia State Trooper from 1957-58. A member of the Church of the Assumption, Keyser, he was also a member of Council #10545, Knights of Columbus, Keyser, life member of Victory Post #155, American Legion, Westernport, Md., Battery "C", 201st Field Artillery, Army National Guard, Keyser, and served as a color guard for Nancy Hanks Post #3518, VFW, Keyser. He was also a member of the Military Police Unit, Cresaptown.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine L. (Taylor) Rice; four sons, Stephen Troy Taylor Rice and wife April Butts, Bartlesville, Okla., Ralph E.R. Rice and wife Darla, Ridgeley, Robert Thomas Patton Rice and wife Amy, Keyser, and Joseph Emory Jacob Rice, at home; two daughters, Catherine Ann Freeman, Keyser, and Tina Ellen Staggs and husband Dutch, Keyser; one brother, Paul Rice, Morgantown; one sister, Barbara Athey, Keyser; 10 grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Rosary/Prayer Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Assumption on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Father Ivan M. Lebar, T.O.R., as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Keyser.

HAROLD B. GROVE SR.
CANTON - Harold B. Grove Sr., 82, of Canton, passed away on Wednesday morning, Feb. 7, 2001, in Mercy Medical Center.
He was born on May 30, 1918, in Avilton, to George and Pearl (Robinson) Grove.
Harold was a truck driver with Lattavo Brothers, retiring in 1970. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of VFW in East Palestine and the Floyd Hughes Post #693 in Canton.
Mr. Grove was also an avid card player and hunter.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Brown; and second wife, Kathryn Dyke.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Dolores "Jean" and Raymond Radabaugh of Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Judy Grove Jr. of Strongsville; brother, Cecil Grove of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren and spouses, Douglas and Janet Grove of Fairview Park, Pamela and Michael Sneath of Lockport, Ill.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton, with the Rev. Ronald Howard officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
