PAUL G. COPENHAVER
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Paul G. Copenhaver, 87, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at his home.

He was an equipment operator with the B & O retiring after 34 years, and was a 50-year Gold Member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance and Way.

Funeral services will be held at the Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

BESSIE M. BURKE

CUMBERLAND -- Bessie M. Burke, 90, of the Allegany County Nursing Home, formerly of Booth Towers and Mullen Street, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.

Born on March 20, 1910, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Riley and Emma (Whitmyre) Roach. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. Burke on Feb. 2, 1968; one son, Kenneth Wayne Burke; two brothers, Enoch Roach and Lee Roach; and two daughters-in-law, Eloise Burke and Barbara Burke.

A homemaker, Mrs. Burke was a lifelong member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and a lifelong resident of South Cumberland. Bessie was an active member of her church, and she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her family and her church were the most important things in her life.

Surviving are two sons, Raymond G. Burke, Cumberland, and William Z. Burke, Cumberland; one daughter, Melva Lee Lewis, Cumberland; one sister, Agnes Linn, Cumberland; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Richard Thomas officiating.

Interment will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery.

Donations may be made in Mrs. Burke's honor to the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

SHIRLEY B. NORRIS

CUMBERLAND -- Shirley Belle Norris, 68, formerly of 58 Marion St., Cumberland, died Feb. 6, 2001. She was the wife of Bill Norris; mother of John (Sheila) Norris; grandmother of Sarah and Carla; and sister of Mary Jane Almond.

She was a member of Women's Auxiliary American Legion Post #36, and the Cumberland Outdoor Club Auxiliary.

Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 9, 2001, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 300 N. Tanque Verde Loop Road.

Friends called at the church on Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Burial followed in Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery.

A reception followed at the American Legion Post #36, 5845 E. 22nd St.

Arrangements were under the direction of Bring's Broadway Chapel, 6910 E. Broadway, Tucson, Ariz.

ROBERT A. LOOKABAUGH

PLEASANT VALLEY, N.Y. -- Robert A. Lookabaugh, 68, a longtime resident of Pleasant Valley, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001.

He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club and worked as an engineer for IBM until his retirement in 1989.

An avid sports enthusiast, he was a three-sport all star at Allegany High School, played baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates, played semiprofessional basketball and was an avid golfer.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954.

Born on July 16, 1932, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late George and Leona Deremer Lookabaugh. On Jan. 14, 1956, he married Doris M. Hartley, who survives at home.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, Mr. Lookabaugh is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Krystal and Richard Rothaupt of Red Hook; a son, Chad Lookabaugh of Pleasant Valley; a daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Sean Deur of Muskegon, Mich.; a daughter and son-in-law, Bobbi and Sergio Reynoso of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Tasha McIntyre of LaVale, Md.; eight grandchildren, Brad, Carley, Travis, Taylor, Madison, Conner, and twins, Lucas and Isabel; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held in Cumberland at a future date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Allen Funeral Home, Main Street, Pleasant Valley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vassar Brothers Foundation, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601, in support of the Cardiac Institute.

FRANK A. BATES

CUMBERLAND -- Frank Allen Bates, 53, of 414 Fayette St., Cumberland, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.

Born on Jan. 9, 1948, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John Joseph Bates and Elton V. (Frisby) Bates. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.

Mr. Bates was an employee of A.B.L., a 1966 graduate of Allegany High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church, the Maryland National Guard, Company C, 129th Signal Battalion, Vietnam Veterans Chapter #172, and the Fulton Meyers Post #153, American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Carole J. (Lefler) Bates, Cumberland; three daughters, Stephanie A. Bates, Augusta, Ga., Frankie Lynn Bates, Calabash, N.C., and Lisa E. Bates, Cumberland; two brothers, Joe Bates and wife Karen, Cumberland, and Jerry Bates, Martinsburg, W.Va.; seven sisters, Junita Redman and husband Robert, Hartford, Conn., Janet Woodward and husband Calvin, Hartford, Roberta Brown, Baltimore, Joyce Hendricks and husband Richard, Temple Hills, Parthenia Stephens, Carol Briggs and husband Mervin, and Donna Hawley and husband Willard, all of Cumberland; and two grandsons, Trevor Allen Bates, Cumberland, and Noah Alexander Bates, Calabash.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 12 noon with the Rev. Theodore D. Higby officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Frank Williams, Mervin Bates, Robert Powell, Cliff Williams, Keith Bates and Patrick Meade.

OLIVE HELMICK

THOMAS, W.Va. -- Olive Helmick, 91, died at her home in Thomas, on Monday, Feb. 12, 2001.

Born in 1909, in Randolph County, she was the daughter of Samuel P. and Flora Bodkin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Helmick in 1988; two brothers, Homer and Arthur; and three sisters, Gertrude, Nell and Beulah.

She was Presbyterian by faith. She was a loving wife and mother.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Cousin and husband Albert "Johnny", Greenbelt, Md., and Clara J. Dougherty and husband John, Cumberland, Md.; two sons, Donald L. Helmick and wife Patricia, Hyndman, Pa., and Richard Helmick and wife Dorotha, Parsons; a sister, Edith Lewis, Elkins; one brother, Donald Bodkin, Palm Dessert, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Honoring her request, she was cremated and interment will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests, if desired, donations be made to Mountain Hospice, Inc., Parsons, WV 26287.
