DANIEL H. LAGRATTA

CUMBERLAND -- Family and Friends are mourning the sudden death of Daniel Herman LaGratta, 41, who passed away on Aug. 18, 2001.

Born Jan. 5, 1960, in Cumberland, he was the son of Geneva "Ginger" (Ketterman) LaGratta and the late Joseph LaGratta, his "best friend" who taught him what it was like to be Italian and who passed away on March 3, 1992.

Mr. LaGratta, an employee of the United States Post Office since 1983, was a window clerk at the main office on Park Street. He was a graduate of the Fort Hill High School Class of 1978, an active member of the Reunion Committee and he served in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the "F" Club and the Outdoor Club. He was President of the local 513 American Postal Workers Union. Mr. LaGratta was a frequent volunteer at the South Penn Elementary School and was the newly elected Vice President of the South Penn P.T.A.

Dan took great joy in coaching every sport his son Joel participated in. He was the head coach of both the South Cumberland Reds Pee Wee football team and the Dapper Dan Rockies baseball team. He also coached the St. John's Lutheran Church basketball team and helped coach youth basketball and floor hockey teams at the Cumberland YMCA. Last Monday, he helped coach his daughter, Jessie's first soccer practice. He encouraged and supported Jessie's participation in dance and acrobat class and was very proud of his daughter this past spring at her first dance revue. Although he had to display it from a distance. Mr. LaGratta was also very proud of his son Danny, currently serving in the United States Army, and the fine young man he has become.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Kay (Hensel) LaGratta, and by his three children, who gave his life purpose and were truly his pride and joy, Daniel Joseph LaGratta, Joel Anthony LaGratta and Jessie Anne LaGratta. Mr. LaGratta strove to follow his father Joe's example and be the best and most loving father possible. He is also survived by two brothers, Frederick Timbrook and wife Patricia, Ridgeley, W.Va., Joseph LaGratta, Cumberland; mother-in-law, Mary (Collins) Hensel; sisters-in-law, Susan Hensel, Melissa Hensel, Diane Hensel; brother-in-law, Rick Hensel; special nephew, Frederick J. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, H. Kennneth Hensel on Oct. 27, 2000.

Filled with love for sports and children, Mr. LaGratta was an excellent coach who encouraged all his kids to "DO the best you can do, have fun, and stay safe!" In acknowledgment of Dan's unending support and pride in all of "his sports kids" in the Youth Pee Wee football league, an award has been established in his name for the "Coach With The Biggest Heart".

At Dan's request there will be no viewing and his body was cremated at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Crematorium, Cresaptown.

Friends will be received at St. John's Lutheran Church, 406 Arch St., Cumberland, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001.

A Memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, with the Rev. Mark C. Dill officiating.

The family requests that memorials take the form to contributions to college trust funds for Joe and Jessie LaGratta through the Al-Gar Federal Credit Union, 316 Paca St., Cumberland, or the South Cumberland Reds Pee Wee football team, c/o Tim Kunis, 206 E. Elder St., Cumberland.

Dan's life revolved around his children and there was no greater joy for him than to spend time with Danny, Joel and Jessie.
