VIOLA F. COOPER
CUMBERLAND - Viola F. Cooper, 78, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at her residence.
Born June 5, 1920, in Romney, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Katie Cooper. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Georgia Sykes, with whom she resided for many years; two other sisters; and one brother.

Miss Cooper was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland. She was a member of Friends Aware for many years and the Cumberland Senior Citizens.

Surviving are a special niece, Julia Ann Myerly, Sun City, Ariz.; special friends, Virginia King and William Willison, both of Cumberland; and a number of other nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 9:30 a.m. with Dr. O. Morton Harris officiating.

Interment will be in the Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friends Aware, Cumberland.

WILLA CHRISTENE 'CHRIS' CARNEY
CUMBERLAND - Willa Christene 'Chris' Carney, 75, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at the Cumberland Nursing Center.
Born Nov. 28, 1924, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late David Dent and Novella (Boal) Davis, Piedmont, W.Va. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in 1987.

Chris was the owner and operator of the Davis Bakery in Piedmont, along with her husband, for over 40 years.

Chris then worked for several years at the Sheetz Convenience Store on Greene Street.

She is survived by a son, the Rev. Jeffrey Cochran-Carney. He and his wife, the Rev. Cynthia Cochran-Carney, are co-pastors of Peace Presbyterian Church, a new church development in Elk Grove, Calif., near Sacramento. She is also survived by two grandsons, Jackson and Joshua Cochran-Carney; three sisters, Matilda Richards, Betty Davis and Lucille Davis, all of Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 11 Washington St., Cumberland, on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. O. Morton Harris Jr. officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the Peace Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 9145 Franklin Blvd., Elk Grove, CA 95758.

IVAN L. ABE
CUMBERLAND - Ivan Lee Abe, 66, of McGee Lane, Cumberland, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, at home.
Born in Cumberland on March 27, 1932, he was the son of the late Clayton and Bernice (Buckley) Abe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Diana Abe Brown; one grandson, Todd Ray Abe; and three brothers, Philip John Abe, Aden Ambrose Abe and Norman Abe.

Mr. Abe was a retired machinist at the Chessie System after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Davis Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Abe was a graduate of Fort Hill High School Class of 1950. While in high school, he was very active in the sports programs at Fort Hill. An Avid golfer, he had made two holes in one. He was a nine-year member of the Western Maryland Football Officials Association. In addition to these activities, Mr. Abe was a life member of the Goodfellowship Club, the Cumberland Outdoor Club and the Cumberland Moose.

Mr. Abe is survived by his wife, Edna (Blacker) Abe; one son, Ricky Lee Abe and wife Wendy of Cumberland; two daughters, Vicky Smith and husband Chuck, and Donna See and husband Thomas, both of Cumberland; one sister, Edith Hetrick of Cumberland; four brothers, Lawrence Abe and Robert L. Abe, both of Cumberland, Richard D. Abe of Wiley Ford, and Roger C. Abe and wife Marianne of Cumberland; two stepdaughters, Bonnie J. O'Baker and husband John of Winter Springs, Fla., and Brenda Cook of Ridgeley; and two stepsons, Edwin D. Lewis III and wife Linda, and Keith R. Lewis, both of Cumberland. Mr. Abe also is survived by 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and very dear family members, George and Betty Davis of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Theodore D. Higby officiating. Burial will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.

Pall Bearers will be his nephews, Steve Abe, Robert Abe, Mark Abe, Larry Abe, Joseph Lechliter and Ronald E. McKenney.

PHOEBE M. BENSON
CUMBERLAND - Phoebe Marie Benson, 84, of Spring Gap, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 29, 1914, in Spring Gap, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Henrietta (Stout) DuVall. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry W. Benson; one son, Robert Benson; one sister, Orpha Benson; three brothers, Egbert, Claude and Leslie DuVall; and one great-granddaughter, Katie Benson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Benson was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Oldtown.

Surviving are three sons, Harry L. Benson and wife Betty, LaVale, Ronald G. Benson and wife Margaret, Winter Haven, Fla., and Thomas W. Benson and wife Mary, Mount Holly Springs, Pa.; one daughter, Etta M. Christopher and husband Jack, Blairsville, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, Sharon Flowers and husband Aubrey, Michael Benson and wife Karen, Gene Benson and wife Holly, Robert Benson and wife Terry, Kevin Benson, Harry Nuttall and wife Tracy, Nathan Nuttall and wife Glenda, Paul Nuttall and wife Sherri, Denise Starner and husband Scott, Christal Blakesslee and husband Kenny, and Charles Kimble and Cheryl; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Rodney Casteel and the Rev. Fred Parker officiating.

Interment will be in the Davis Memorial Cemetery.

The family requests that contributions be made to the Pentecostal Holiness Building Fund.

Pallbearers will be Vincent Baker, Michael Benson, Gene Benson, Kevin Benson, Harry Nuttall and Charles Kimble.

JOHN S. ALLEN
CUMBERLAND - John S. Allen, 79, of Potomac Park, Cumberland, died Friday, July 23, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born July 20, 1920, in Corriganville, he was the son of the late Lawrence Allen and Irma (McCormick) Allen Hice. He also was preceded in death by his stepfather, Warren Hice.

Mr. Allen was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from the Kelly Springfield Tire Co. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Pope John Council Knights of Columbus, Local 26 Kelly Retirement Club, Mount Savage Old Rail Post VFW, Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion, and the El Fidel Club.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary Katherine (McGowan) Allen; two daughters, Celeste Joyce and husband Fred, Gaithersburg, and Mary Jane Neubeiser and husband Robert, Damascus; six grandchildren, James Joyce, Douglas Joyce, Michael Neubeiser, David Neubeiser, Kevin Neubeiser and Katie Neubeiser; and one brother, Charles Hice.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 8:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with Father Reginald Russo, OFM, Cap., as celebrant.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family requests that contributions be made to St. Ambrose Catholic Church in memory of John S. Allen.

Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

HOWARD T. "BUD" CAROLAN SR.
GARNER, N.C. - Howard T. "Bud" Carolan Sr., 83, of Sycamore Drive, Garner, died on Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at New Haven Hospital, Wilmington.
Born on April 3, 1916, at Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Philip T. Carolan I and Gertrude P. (Speelman) Carolan. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Abell) Carolan, who died on Sept. 25, 1991. Also preceding him in death were one brother, Philip T. Carolan II; and one sister, Mary G. "Patsy" Greiner.

Mr. Carolan was the owner/operator of Carolan's Tavern on North Centre Street, Cumberland, retiring after 30 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Garner, and a member of the LaSalle High School class of 1933. He was active with the Rapplier Club, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Hornick and husband, Gene, Garner, Penelope "Penny" Botti and husband, James, North Huntington, Pa.; two sons, Howard T. Carolan Jr. and wife, Karen, Ellicott City, Md., Orman Carolan, Garner; one sister, Harriet F. McKenzie, LaVale, Md.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, with the Rev. Thomas P. Bevan as Celebrant.

Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Christian Wake services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be grandsons of Mr. Carolan.
