HELEN L. MARTZ
LAVALE - Helen L. Martz, 96, of LaVale, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, in the Allegany County Nursing Home.

Born March 3, 1903, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Rhoda May (Skidmore) Spitznas. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Joseph Martz; and one brother, Glenn Spitznas.

Mrs. Martz was a member of the LaVale United Methodist Church. A retired school teacher, she taught one year in the Garrett County school system and 40 years in the Allegany County school system. She was a lifetime member of the Retired Teachers Association.

Surviving are two nieces, Patricia Hout and husband Charles, and Hilda Gellner and husband Phil, both of LaVale; two nephews, Edward E. Martz and wife Theda, and Richard Holt and wife Naomi, both of LaVale; and one cousin, Mrs. Lonnie (Gladys) Howsare of Frostburg Heights.

Friends will be received in the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.

Interment will follow in Frostburg Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be David Drewry, Dr. Charles Orlick, Bernie Miller, Edward Martz, Charles Hout, and Richard Holt.

FISCHER S. PAGE
CUMBERLAND - Fischer Sutton Page, 79, formally of 439 Pine Ave., Cumberland, and Denton Road Nursing Home, Oakland, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born Dec. 22, 1919, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Jesse Page and the late Gertrude (Davis) Page. He also was preceded in death by two stepdaughters, Gail Page and Scherre Taylor.

Mr. Page was a parking garage manager and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Thalia (Mallory) Page, Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Glenn Page, Plainfield, N.J., Darryl Page and wife Tina, Cumberland, and Mallory Page, Brooklyn, N.Y.; one daughter, Arsene L. Tolliver, Plainfield, N.J.; four sisters, Virginia Flurry, Jessup, Marion Page, Cumberland, Wiona Mitchell, Pittsburgh, and Mayola Banks, Cumberland; three brothers, Marian Page, Cerritos, Calif., William Page, New York City, and Kenneth Page, Queen City, Texas; and six grandsons, Wesley Jordan, Randy Page, Rashad Page, Na'eem Page, Tahir Page and Jamelle Page.

Mr. Page was cremated at the Cumberland Crematory.

Services will be scheduled at a later date.

The Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN E. MARTZ
CUMBERLAND - John Edward Martz, 76, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at his residence.

Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Asa G. and Regina (Billing) Martz. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Marguerite Tenly.

Mr. Martz was retired from the Allegany County Planning and Zoning Commission and was the last brewmaster of the Queen City Brewing Company. He was a 1941 graduate of LaSalle High School and attended Potomac State College and West Virginia University. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, the Cumberland Outdoor Club, Cumberland Lodge #63 B.P.O. Elks, and the Cresaptown Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theatre, and he received a Purple Heart.

Surviving are two sisters, Anna Lee Tyler, Cumberland, and Regina M. Davis, Cumberland; three brothers, Edward P. Martz and wife, Margaret V., Cumberland, George A. Martz, Paramount, Calif., and William L. Martz and wife, Sharon B., Hermitage, Pa.; a special friend, Mary Barillaro, Arbutus, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted on Friday at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Fr. Vernon Busch, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.

Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery.

The family requests contributions be made to SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

Pallbearers will be Greg Martz, Jeff Martz, Randy Tyler, Mark Tenly, Mike Tenly and Matt Tenly. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Michael and Donald Michael.

NORMAN D. MASON SR.
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Norman David Mason Sr., 79, of Boca Raton, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at the Boca Raton Hospital.

Born Feb. 11, 1920, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late David and Lovota (Ayres) Mason.

Mr. Mason was a member of the first graduating class from Fort Hill High School in 1937. He was a graduate of Potomac State College and Randolph Macon College in Richmond, Va., where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He received his Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Akron. He was a retired Nuclear Engineer with the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C. Prior to his employment with the Atomic Energy Commission, he was a Chemical Engineer with the Kelly Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland.

Mr. Mason was a member of the Fort Hill High School, Potomac State College, and Randolph Macon College basketball teams. While at Randolph Macon College, he was the leading basketball scorer for the State of Virginia. He was a member of the semi-professional basketball and softball teams for the Cumberland Moose. He also played professional basketball as a member of the Cumberland Dukes and the Akron Wingfoots in Akron, Ohio. He was a youth baseball and basketball coach in the Washington, D.C., area. He was a member of several chemical and engineering associations and the Crystal Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. After his retirement from the Atomic Energy Commission in 1972, he resided in Fort Lauderdale. He had resided in Boca Raton for the past ten years.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Baylor) Mason; one son, Norman D. Mason Jr., and wife Cynthia, Boca Raton; two grandsons, Matthew and Thomas Mason; three brothers; Boyd A. Mason and wife Sarah, Hagerstown, Md., Donald W. Mason and wife Dorothy, and C. Eugene Mason and wife Grace, both of Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Heritage Manor Memorial Park in Boca Raton on Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at 4 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

RONALD F. PHILLIPS
HAGERSTOWN - Ronald F. Phillips, 61, of 20806 Emerald Drive, Hagerstown, died Oct. 9, 1999, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London, CT.

Born Dec. 29, 1937, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of late William Edgar Phillips, Sr., and Regina Payne Phillips Collins. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Betty Thuss; and one brother, Duane Phillips.

Mr. Phillips was employed with the Washington County Board of Education as a Principal at Paramount Elementary and later retired from Old Forge Elementary School after 35 years of service. He was a member of the National Assoc. of Elementary School Principals. The Maryland Assoc. of Elementary School Principals, and the Washington County Assoc. of Elementary School Principals serving on the Executive Board and the Chairperson of the Citizenship Award.

He was a Charter member for the Washington County Hall of Fame, member of the Medairy Lodge A.F. and A.M. 140. He was past President of the Washington County Recreation and Parks Advisory Board, he served on the Bd. of Directors for the Black Rock Golf Course. He was a member of Dream Come True where he served on the Executive Board, as president. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Hagerstown Junior College Foundation and a past president of Hagerstown Junior College Athletic Boosters Club. He was past member of the Governor's Commission on Children and Youth of Washington County, member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Hagerstown Lodge 378, past chairman of Youth Activities Committee, Scholarship Committee, and Teenager of the Year Committee.

He was past member of the Board of Directors of Valley Little League/Senior League Baseball and the Board of Directors of Smithburg, Leitersburg, Chewsville, Athletic League, he was a past Vice President of the Washington County Coaches Association. He was member of the Washington County Rural Heritage Museum and a past member of the Y.M.C.A. Youth Committee, he was past secretary of the High School Golf League.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where he served on the Scholarship Committee. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Washington County Teachers Assn. Credit Union and a past member of Executive Board of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Anna Margaret Phillips; daughter, Julie L. Beard, Hagerstown; son, R. Scott Phillips, Dunwoody, GA; sisters, Lorretta Abe, Baltimore, Diana Stewart, Cumberland, Rebecca Weaver, Ridgeley, W.Va., Leona Smelser, Bowling Green; brothers, Dr. William Edgar Phillips, Jr., Fairmont, W.Va., Robert Collins, Ridgeley, W.Va.; and four grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., N. Hagerstown, MD, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 21006 Twin Springs Dr., Chewsville, Md., Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John W. Schilt, officiating.

Interment will be at Beaver Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Dream Come True or Children in Need, both at 1201 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742

SHIRLEY H. MASON
FROSTBURG - Shirley Helena Mason, 64, of 216 Shaw St., Frostburg died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.

Born Oct. 6, 1934, in Avilton, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Mary A. (McKenzie) Garlitz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence L. Mason, Sept. 22, 1981; a daughter, Norma Evans and an infant son. She was a member of Old St. Ann's Catholic Shrine and was employed for 18 years as a cook at Frostburg State University.

Survivors include four daughters, Janet Mason, Donna Geary and Julie Winters, all of Frostburg and Paula Hetz, Cumberland; two brothers, Harry and Albert Garlitz, both of Avilton; two sisters, Freda Minick, Barton and Beulah Hetz, Avilton and seven grandchildren, Cambria Knight, Mandy Geary, Larry Mason, Tiffany Mason, Sandy Evans, Michelle Evans and Destiny Hetz.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Monday at 10 a.m. at Old St. Ann's Shrine, Avilton with Sister Joan Minella officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
