Francis Browning

The cause of death for Francis J. "Frank" Browning, 83, of Heritage Harbor in Annapolis, was incorrect in his obituary on June 25, 2001.

Mr. Browning died of complications of normal pressure hydrocephalus June 22 at his home after a long illness.

John Barton Jr.

John Clark "Jack" Barton Jr., 60, a 30-year resident of Lanham and formerly of Annapolis, died of cardio-vascular disease June 24 at his home.

Mr. Barton was born in Monessen, Pa., on Nov. 27, 1940, and attended Monessen High School, the Douglas Business School in Monessen and St. Joseph Pontifical College in Worthington, Ohio.

After serving in the Army from 1963 to 1965, he received an honorable discharge.

He worked for the Library of Congress, was an office supervisor at the Washington Navy Yard and was a military personnel specialist at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington during his career.

He was a former member of St. Leonard's Catholic Church in Monessen.

An avid sports fan, he also coached soccer, T-ball and softball for the Lanham Boys and Girls Club.

Surviving are his wife, Euphemia Barton; his son, Damian Barton of Lanham; his brother, Keith Barton of Bradenton, Fla.; two sisters, Sharon Link of Atlanta, Ga., and Wanda Portis of Abington, Pa.; and one grandchild.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with a Christian wake from 10:30 to 11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Second St. in Eastport. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

John Morris

Services for John M. Morris, 60, of Baltimore and fomerly of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., were held June 26, 2001 at Slateville Presbyterian Church in Delta, Pa.

Mr. Morris died June 21, 2001 at Johns Hopkins Hospital while awaiting a heart transplant.

Born in Baltimore, he was raised in Delta, where he was a member of Slateville Presbyterian Church. He graduated in 1963 from Pennsylvania State University.

He was a golf reporter for The (Baltimore) Sun in 1964 and then became sports information director for the University of Delaware and subsequently for Penn State. From 1979 to 1981 he edited a college sports magazine based in Kansas City, Kan.

In 1981 he was named director of communications for the U.S. Golf Association in Far Hills, N.J., and became vice president of communications for the PGA Tour in 1993.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine Margaret Bassett Morris, whom he married in 1963; a son, John Bassett Morris of New York; a daughter, Laura Findley Morris Gleason of Newark, Del.; a brother, James Lowe Morris of Annapolis; a sister, Margaret Findley Morris Stapleton of Carlisle, Pa.; and two grandsons.

William Sartorius

William S. Sartorius, 90, a retired educator, died of cancer June 25, 2001 at Broadmead, a retirement community in Cockeysville, where he had lived since 1988.

Born in Pocomoke City in Worcester County, Mr. Sartorius graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts, received a master's degree from Duke University and took graduate work at additional universities.

He taught in Worcester County and at Kenwood High School in Baltimore County in the 1930s and in 1937 was named principal of Ocean City High School. He later became superintendent of education in Cecil and Worcester counties.

Mr. Sartorius was named assistant superintendent for finance at the state Department of Education in 1952. From 1961 to 1970 he was superintendent of the Baltimore County public school system, which grew from 92, 000 to 140, 000 students. He was instrumental in bringing kindergarten to the county's elementary schools, expanding programs in special education and introducing football to the high schools.

After retiring in 1970, he served on the State Board of Community Colleges.

His interests included surf fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Cooper Sartorius, a retired teacher; two sons, William S. Sartorius Jr. of Miami Beach, Fla., and John C. Sartorius of Herndon, Fla.; a daughter, Anne Payne of Severna Park; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Towson Presbyterian Church, Chesapeake and Highland avenues.

Clare Sunderland

A memorial service for Clare R. Sunderland, 93, was held June 24, 2001 at Baltimore Shambhala Meditation Center in Baltimore.

Mrs. Sunderland died of natural causes June 17 at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville where she had lived for the past two years.

Born in Baltimore, the former Clare Marie Riggin lived on Greenspring Avenue in Baltimore for 50 years. She graduated from Eastern High School and worked for 25 years at the University of Maryland Hospital.

She was married in 1933 to Edwin P. Sunderland, who died in 1963.

Surviving are two children, Edwin P. Sunderland Jr. of Severna Park and Clare C. Sunderland of Newberg, Ore.

Burial was in Loudon Park cemetery in Baltimore yesterday. Arrangements were by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.

Clemens Wagner Jr.

Clemens Martin Wagner Jr., 70, of Greensboro in Caroline County and formerly of Annapolis, died of heart failure June 25, 2001 at Memorial Hospital in Easton.

Born April 2, 1931, in Annapolis and known as "Junior, " Mr. Wagner graduated from Annapolis High School. Self-employed in excavation work, he retired at age 59 and moved to the Eastern Shore.

He was a member of the Annomads Family Camping of Annapolis and the Anne Arundel Fish and Game State Conservation Association. His interests were the Chesapeake Bay and the Annapolis area, hunting, fishing, crabbing and camping.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Phyllis L. Wagner; two sons, Ronald L. Wagner of Arnold and Edward M. Wagner of Lothian; three daughters, Judith L. Munroe of Arnold, Deborah L. Wagner of Annapolis and Patricia M. Wagner of Gloucester, Mass.; one brother, David M. Wagner of Severna Park; one sister, Lorna J. Cunningham of Edgewater; and eight grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Clemens Martin Wagner Sr. and Doris R. Daughtry and the stepson of the late Mary D. Rausch and Joe E. Daughtry.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Fuenral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Robert Winkel

Robert Everard "Wink" Winkel, 50, a resident of Bay Ridge for 30 years, died of natural causes June 25, 2001 at his home.

Mr. Winkel was born Sept. 24, 1950, in New York City. He graduated from Severn School and received an associate of arts degree from Anne Arundel Community College and a bachelor of science degree from Frostburg State College.

He began sailing in 1963 and had worked in the boating industry since 1972.

Surviving are his parents, Robert B. and Berry K. Winkel of Annapolis; one brother, William B. Winkel of Hollis Center, Maine; and two sisters, Berry Lowman of Annapolis and Elizabeth Craig of Greenfield Center, N.Y.

Services will be private. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Annapolis Maritime Museum, P.O. Box 3088, Annapolis, MD 21403.

John Sis Jr.

The location of death of John A. "Jack" Sis Jr., 68, of Harwood, was incorrect in his obituary on June 25, 2001.

Mr. Sis, who was known for opening his home to many foster children, died of cancer June 22 at his home.
