H. Teresa Hatch

WATERVLIET - Helen Teresa Hatch, 79, of Watervliet died Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at Borgess Heart Institute in Kalamazoo.

She was born Sept. 27, 1929.

H. Teresa Hatch, to which she preferred to be referred in writing, passed quietly while recovering from surgery after a long battle with heart disease. Beloved wife of Byron A. Hatch for 58 years. Loving mother of Col. Stephen Joseph Hatch of Centreville, Va., Laura D. Bellmay of Collinsville, Conn., and Byron William Hatch of Watervliet. H. Teresa was predeceased by two of her children, Diana Van Nostrand of Phelps, N.Y., and Mary Elizabeth Hatch of New Haven, Conn. Dear Grandmother of Stephen D. Hatch, William B. Hatch, Teresa Kim Linh Hatch and Devon Von Nostrand.

H. Teresa Hatch was the second-youngest child in a family of nine. James, John, Edward, Eileen, Kathleen, Margaret, Julia and Mary. She is survived only by younger brother, Edward. Daughter of Widow Margaret Fitzgerald, who raised her children during the Depression as a single parent. This challenge forged H. Teresa's fierce lifelong support of higher education.

Late graduate of Saint Mary's Academy, magna cum laude graduate of Albertus Magnus College, and The New Haven State Teachers College, New Haven, Conn. As a young woman, H. Teresa was a sixth-grade teacher, relishing the classroom and the young lives she so effectively touched. These lessons were shared at home, as well, and gave her children a valuable head start in school. As an employee of the Veterans Administration and later Yale University from the early 1960s until her retirement in 1988, H. Teresa was a trailblazer. She fearlessly set off to work every morning at a time when women were rare in the executive workplace. She forged a successful career as a medical publications editor and was so well read on the subject of heart disease that she became widely respected by some of the very best cardiac surgeons and researchers of her day. She was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association for her work on a Heart Bypass Survivability Study, in which she later became an unwilling participant.
H. Teresa volunteered her time weekly to Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet, working in the food pantry. H. Teresa was known as an avid reader, almost unbeatable Scrabble player, for her intellect, her love of the English language and her grandchildren. H. Teresa, our mom, leaves an aching void in the hearts of those close to her. Yet the huge impact she has had on so many lives will endure - as will our cherished memories of the time we were lucky enough to spend with her.

Friends may visit with H. Teresa's family from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 19, at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet. A prayer service will be celebrated with Deacon Joseph Gray at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet.
