Eliza Woods

BENTON HARBOR - Eliza Woods, 92, of Benton Harbor died Thursday, July 16, 2009, at home.

She was born March 27, 1917, in Winona, Miss., and lived in Benton Harbor, 802 Pavone St., since 1965. She was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and treasurer for St. Mark Mission Society.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Wash Jones in 1945 and Clemon Woods in 1988; her parents, George and Nancy Tanner; and one son, Alexander Jones.

She is survived by daughters - Estelle (Clarence) Rushing and Alice Faye Jones, both of Benton Harbor; Sarah (RB) Thomas of Indianapolis, Nancy Jones of Chicago, Dora (Joe) Williams of Memphis, Tenn., and Luella (Jessie) Blade of Detroit; one brother, Luther Tanner of Tobita, Miss.; 37 grandchildren; 93 great-grandchildren and 65 great-great-grandhildren.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, at St. Mark Baptist Church, Benton Harbor.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, at St. Mark Baptist Church, Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Donald Green officiating. Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Coloma.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Charles Edwin Streu

COLOMA - Charles Edwin Streu, 79, of Coloma, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009, at his residence.

Services with Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma, where visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Cremation will take place following the service. Memorial donations may be made to the DAV Chapter 17 in Benton Harbor. Those wishing to sign the online guestbook or leave a message of comfort for the family may do so at www.duffieldpastrick.com.

Charles was born May 10, 1930, in Nashville, Tenn. He was adopted by Louis J. (Marie Lapa) Streu. After Marie's passing in 1938, Louis married Erna Borchardt. In 1947 he joined the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Leyte CV32 until 1950. Charles attended Pullman Tech in Chicago, where he met his wife, Charlene Vander Wal, marrying her Nov. 4, 1950. He was in the excavating business until 1965 when he became a developer and builder of residential and commercial properties, having his own real estate broker's license. He and Charlene moved to Michigan where they finished raising there two youngest children and purchased Deer Forest in 1975 from the Potts family, who were the originators of the park. After finally retiring in 1987, he enjoyed driving his car around to observe all the changes in the area. Charles was also a member of Hope Reformed Church in South Haven.

Charles is survived by his wife, Charlene; three sons - Charles (Janet) Streu of Coloma, Kevin (Lori) Streu of Lawton, and Ross (Lisa) Streu also of Coloma; three grandchildren, Michelle, Tori and Tyler, all of Coloma; daughter-in-law, Kathy Streu of Coloma; and a cousin, Marilyn George of Warsaw, Ind.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Scott Streu.

Margaret F. Kubash

STEVENSVILLE - Margaret "Maggie" F. Kubash, 88, of Stevensville, went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family.

A private graveside service will be held at Resurrection Cemetery in St. Joseph with Deacon Mike Gallagher officiating. Memorials may be made to Lake Michigan Catholic Schools or Hospice at Home. Those wishing to send a condolence message may do so online at www.starks-menchinger.com.

Margaret was born in Stevensville to Jenny and Julius Maffei on March 3, 1921. She graduated from Stevensville High School and worked at Industrial Rubber Company during World War II. Margaret married her husband, Edward B. Kubash on Oct. 23, 1948 in St. Joseph. Together, they raised three sons, James Edward, Thomas Edward and Douglas Edward Kubash. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Margaret was an extraordinarily devoted mother, wife and grandmother. "Gentle Woman, Peaceful Dove" Maggie will be missed by her family.

She is survived by her loving husband, Edward; sons, James Edward (Linda) Kubash, Thomas Edward (Lucy) Kubash, Douglas Edward Kubash; grandchildren, Emily (Dan), Chistopher, Aris, Anna and sister, Jean Varney.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jennie and Julius and a sister, Evelyn Kaatz.

Joan Martha Lee Koch

SEGUIN, Texas - Joan Martha Lee Koch, 78, of Seguin, Texas, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away in her sleep on July 22, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor William Lange and Pastor Tim Bauerkemper officiating.

Joan was born on May 29, 1931 in Mondovi, Wis., to Obert Kenny (OK) and Merle Crocker Lee. Her husband, William B. Koch of St Joseph precedes her in death. Survivors include her sons, James Koch and Robert Koch and Robert's wife, Lisa; Joan's brother, Mark Lee; sister, Audrey Zimmer and sister-in-law Alice Lee. Joan felt blessed having 9 grandchildren, Tyler, Trinity, Lukas, Jacob, Gloria, Uriah, Shiloh, Lilly, and Miriam, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan received her undergraduate training at University of Wisconsin-Stout, and attained her accreditation for dietician while at Indiana University. She received a master's degree at Western Kentucky University and her doctorate in human ecology at Cornell University. Her dietetic work included management of food service for the new Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in 1964, as well as many hospitals in Eastern Kentucky during her residence in Bowling Green. While in Ithaca, N.Y., Joan was involved in the Broom County Cooperative Extension Service, and provided meal schedules for the school system before beginning her position as Instructor in Human Ecology at Cornell University, which she held until her retirement. She recently celebrated her 50th anniversary as a Registered Dietician. For the last 10 years of her life, she lived in Seguin, Texas, and was surrounded by many friends through church, bridge, and various volunteer activities.

Joan will be interred next to her husband Bill at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Ithaca, N.Y. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Emma Higgins

COLOMA - Mrs. Emma Robertson Higgins, 85, of Kennesaw, Ga., and Coloma, formerly a 50-year resident of New Orleans, passed away July 19, 2009.

Mrs. Higgins was born May 27, 1924, in Elkatawa, Ky., the daughter of James and Maggie Brewer Robertson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edmond C. Higgins Sr.

Mrs. Higgins retired from Wal-mart with 18 years of service and attended Prayer and Praise Christian Fellowship in Woodstock, Ga.

She was the loving mother to daughter Jane Barbier and her husband, Roy, of Kennesaw, Ga; son Eddie Higgins of Pensacola, Fla.; son Frank Higgins and his wife, Paty, of Gautier, Miss.; daughter B.J. Parrish and her husband, Paul, of Coloma; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Per her wishes, she was cremated. There will be a graveside memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans.

Kathleen T. Daniel

COLOMA - Kathleen T. "Kitty" Daniel, 69, of Coloma passed away peacefully at home Friday, July 24, 2009.

Kitty was born Sept. 22, 1939, in Calumet City, Ind., to Henry and Irene Mak. Among her employers were V.M. Corp., Heath-Zenith in St. Joseph, and Vitale's Market in Lake Michigan Beach. She also owned and operated The Pour House in Coloma during the late 1980s.

Kitty is survived by her husband of 47 years, Guy, whom she married June 30, 1962; her mother, Irene Mak of St Joseph; two sons, Kevin Daniel and Kerry (Kendra) Daniel, both of Coloma; three stepchildren, Denise (Dominic) Daniel of Canada, Dara Daniel of California, and Douglas Daniel of Lawrence. Also surviving are six grandchildren - Tyler, Briana, Bo, Brittany, Kristan and Paige; one brother, Henry J. (Arlene) Mak of St Joseph; and two sisters, Sherry E. (Larry) Lavanway of Benton Harbor and Sue Ann (Mark) Vander Bee of Stevensville.

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Mak.

Harold J. Peterson

SAWYER - Harold J. "Pete" Peterson, 96, was "promoted" on July 23, 2009, to be with the Lord and hold hands again with his loving wife, Ollie, and only daughter, Leanne.

Pete was born on Aug. 23, 1913, in Vancouver, B.C., to Charles and Maria Peterson. He worked for more than 40 years for Hartford Fire Insurance Co. Pete was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Elim Baptist Church in Chicago, Horizons Community Church in Peoria, Ariz., and the Bethany Beach Tabernacle/Association in Sawyer. He began a Boy Scout group at Elim, was a Sunday school superintendent for many years and former president of the Bethany Beach Association.

Pete is best known for his tireless energy, creative "fix-it" remedies, and love for golf, tennis, oil painting and taking photos. His best memories were of his trips to Sweden when he was ages 16 and 91.

Pete is survived by two sons, Robert and Donald; daughter-in-laws, Judith and Barbara; son-in-law Ed Converse; six grandchildren - Rob, Polly, Amy, Jonathan, Mandee and Tobin; and 12 great-grandchildren - Lauren, Micah, Nichole, Andrew, Tyler, Adam, Alyssa, Lucien, Adele, Olivia, Alma and Jessica. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. A private memorial and celebration of his life will be held at the Tabernacle in Bethany Beach in Sawyer. His final resting place will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chicago.

Willie I.V. Brooks Jr.

BENTON HARBOR - Willie I.V. Brooks Jr., 54, of Benton Harbor passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2009, at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.

He was born Dec. 13, 1954, in Memphis, Tenn., to Willie I.V. Brooks Sr. and Bertha Jackson. Willie accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Mount Zion M.B.C. under the leadership of the late Rev. John Watson. Willie later rededicated his life to God and united with New Paradise M.B.C. under the leadership of his uncle, Rev. Willie T. Burton.

Willie tirelessly volunteered his time and talent to preparing Sunday morning breakfast at church and working at the Benton Harbor Soup Kitchen. One of his most passionate missions became helping touch the lives of people in recovery. Above all his interests, Willie's greatest joy in life was his family. He enjoyed fellowshipping with family and close friends, never missing an opportunity to make you smile.

To hold and cherish his memories, Willie leaves his wife, Kathy Atcher-Brooks; his son, Willie I.V. Brooks III; his daughter, Kenyatta Perry; two grandsons, Aamad Perry of Dallas and Willie Campbell Brooks; one granddaughter, Teyana Brooks; his mother, Bertha Jackson; three sisters, Wavey (Lenny) Thompson, Tracy Jackson-Brown and Pamela Jackson of St. Louis; four brothers, Larry (Mattie) Brooks, David (Wendy) Jackson of New Bedford, Mass., Dwight (Penny) Jackson of Arlington, Tenn., and Peter (Rose) Jackson of St. Louis. He also leaves a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins to cherish the laughter, smiles and inspiration he brought to them all.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie I.V. Brooks, Sr., and his step-father, the late Rev. Peter Jackson.

The visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 26, at New Paradise M.B.C. The celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at New Paradise M.B.C.
