Raimon B. Yeider

BANGOR - Raimon B. Yeider, 93, of Bangor passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at Countryside Nursing and Rehabilitation Community, South Haven, after a brief stay in the hospital.

The family will meet friends on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Bangor Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with Pastor David L. Markel officiating. Interment will follow in Monks Cemetery, Geneva Township. The family suggest memorials to the Bangor Alumni Foundation. www.dlmillerfuneralhome.com.

Raimon was born Nov. 8, 1915, at his grandparents home near Bangor, the son of Levi and Reta (Sternaman) Yeider. Except for his years in the military, Raimon lived his entire life within a quarter-mile of his birthplace on land originally homesteaded by his great-grandparents. He loved his farmboy background and fondly recalled plowing with his grandfather's team of horses and going into Bangor with a horse and buggy when M-43 was a dirt road. He attended Johnstown Country School and graduated from Bangor High School in 1934.

On Dec. 24, 1942, while on military leave, he married the former Harriet Williams in South Haven. He loved our country and was proud to have served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Raimon was a member of the Bangor American Legion and never missed a Memorial Day parade or a Pearl Harbor memorial service.

He and his wife owned and operated a small farm near Bangor. Every fall Raimon ran a cider mill along with his wife and parents and looked forward to seeing his many friends as they lined up to have their apples ground and pressed. Raimon also worked for Auto Specialties, Hartford, retiring in 1977. He enjoyed fishing, reading and was a history buff.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 67 years, Harriet; two daughters, Kathleen (William) Cochran of Bangor and Christeen Wheeler of Arkansas; two sons, John (Jodie) Yeider of Bangor and James (Bess) Yeider of Gobles; eight grandchildren, Garry (Sheri) Hargrove Jr., Shellien (Alan) Schwerdt, Amanda (Yeider) Rhodes, Katie Yeider, Courtney Koenig, Carrie Yeider, John Yeider and James Yeider; five great-grandchildren, Nicole, Steven and Zachary Hargrove, Olivia Schwerdt and Brianna Rhodes; one sister, Shirley King of South Haven; one brother, Mervin (Peggy Ann Taylor) Yeider of Bangor; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Millicent and Lloyd Roe; a grandson, Michael Yeider; and a great-granddaughter, Tristian Hargrove.

Heinrich 'Henry' Nickel

STEVENSVILLE - Heinrich "Henry" Nickel, 101, of Stevensville was born on Nov. 17, 1907, in Kartschemka, Wohlynia (Poland) to Michael and Emilie Nickel (nee Behnke). He was called home by his Savior on Sept. 16, 2009, surrounded by his family.

Heinrich married Erna Nickel (nee Reinhardt) on Feb. 3, 1931. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1990. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Ludwig, and two sisters, Emilie and Augusta.

On March 23, 1950, Heinrich and his family immigrated to the United States, sponsored by Sophie and Edward Burch. They settled in Benton Harbor and he became a proud citizen of the United States in 1955. Heinrich worked for Auto Specialties until 1974. After his retirement, Heinrich enjoyed woodworking, his large vegetable garden, watching wrestling or soccer and, most of all, greeting each new grandchild and great-grandchild.

He was blessed with good health most of his life and lived on his own until October 2003, when he moved in with his daughter and son-in-law, Helga and Ernst Oelke of Stevensville, who survived him. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bruno and Edith Nickel of St. Joseph.

Also left to cherish memories of "Opa" are five grandchildren: Kathy (Michael) Rimpel, Edward (Darla) Nickel, Michael Nickel, Annette Nickel and John (Lisa) Nickel. Heinrich was also "GrossOpa" to 10 great-grandchildren: Michelle (Nicholas) Hagewood, Aaron, Jessica and Micah Rimpel, Christopher, Stephen, John Paul, Cooper, Karly and Cameron "Hank" Nickel. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in both the United States and Germany.

Heinrich was baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran church and will be remembered in services at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Benton Harbor at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, with Pastor Jeremy Laitinen officiating. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph.
