Romie Mullins

COLOMA - Romie Mullins, 84 of Coloma passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at her home. Romie went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by her family.

Romie was born July 30, 1925, in Manila, Ark., the daughter of Ira and Hattie (Thomas) George. She married Homer Mullins on Feb. 14, 1946. She truly enjoyed spending time with her family, attending church and shopping. She was a member of the Lake Michigan Beach Community Church.

Romie is survived by five daughters, Becky Rose of Coloma, Brenda (Gary) Yerington of Eau Claire, Kattie (Jimmy) Allen of Coloma, Char (John) Knapp of Stevensville and Cathy (Tom) Fuller of Watervliet; four sons, Jimmy (Marla) Mullins of Hartford, Russell (Charla) Mullins of Coloma, Steve (Tonya) Mullins of Hartford and Michael (Laura) Mullins of Watervliet; and a sister, Viola Woodall of Mississippi. Romie is also survived by 25 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in passing by her husband, Homer, on Dec. 18, 1992, two sons, Allen and Benny Mullins, one daughter, Joyce Freeman, her parents, two sons-in-law, Bobby Rose and Eugene Freeman, two grandsons, Wayne Freeman and Jimmy Allen Jr., four sisters and four brothers.

The family will welcome friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Community General Baptist Church of Watervliet, which she was attending. A service to honor her memory will commence at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the church. Pastor Tom Fuller will serve as officiant. Burial will follow in Coloma Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Lakeland Hospice. The family has entrusted the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, with handling the arrangements.

Selma F. Holme (nee Zucker)

ST. JOSEPH - Selma F. Holme (nee Zucker), age 79, of Darien, Ill., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at her home. She was born Dec. 5, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Selma was a graduate of Brooklyn College, received her master's degree in social work from Boston University and began her career in Chicago. She married John C. "Jack" Holme on June 25, 1955, and they relocated to St. Joseph. She worked as the Director of Pre-School Education for the Benton Harbor Area Schools and as a social worker at the Riverwood Community Mental Health Center in St. Joseph. Most recently she was the Director of the Crisis Intervention Unit for the DuPage County Health Department and retired in 1994 after ten years of service.

Selma was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Naperville, Ill., where she made her Bat Mitzvah in 2007.

She was an avid folk dancer and enjoyed all aspects of the arts. She was a very active member of the College of DuPage Field Studies Program. She thrived in the out of doors and enjoyed walking, canoeing, camping and cross country skiing. Selma had a sense of adventure that was often expressed in her love of travel. She traveled extensively with her family and in recent years took each of her grandchildren on a trip combining elders and youth. In July she climbed Mount Olympus in Greece with her youngest granddaughter.

Selma was generous and genuine in her many friendships and had an extraordinary ability to maintain authentic connections with many, many people.

Central to Selma's life was her relationship with her husband, Jack. For nearly 55 years they enjoyed a loving, vibrant relationship. The continued to adapt to the changes evolving in each other and find new ways to enjoy the life they shared.

She is survived by her husband, Jack, her son, Kevin and Tammy Holme, daughter, Jennifer Holme and Robyn Miller; five grandchildren, Mikaela and Gabrielle Holme-Miller, Amanda, Caroline and Alex Holme; two brothers, Allyn Zucker and Jonas (Pearl) Zucker; sister-in-law, Joan Holme and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Anna (nee Israel) Zucker and one sister, Ethel Steinman.

Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 14, 2009, 2 p.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom, 772 West Fifth Ave., Naperville, Ill. 60563. Interment will be at Naperville Cemetery. Memorials in Mrs. Holme's name may be made to Wellness House, 131 N. County Line Road, Hinsdale, Ill. 60521-2401 or to a charity of your choice appropriate to your relationship with Selma. Arrangements are being made by the Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville.

Wayne 'Fred' F. Little Sr.

PAW PAW - Fred's life began on Sept. 1, 1946, in St. Joseph. He was the son of Earl W. and Ruby (Lucas) Little and stepson of Orville Kessinger. He was united in marriage to the former Judy Hoyt on April 2, 1966, in Benton Harbor. Fred worked in several area factories and as a truck driver. He was a member of the New Life Christian Center in Coloma.

Fred's loving family includes his wife, Judy Little of Paw Paw; his mother, Ruby Kessinger of Eau Claire; children, Wayne Little Jr. of Paw Paw, Shelly (James) Clements-Matson of Coloma, Robert Little of Eau Claire and Lisa (Tim) Ryan of Eau Claire; eight grandchildren, Amber, Sarah, Freddy, Shauna, Jessica, Wayne, Melissa and Troy; great-grandchildren, Adam, Kaylee, Lillian, Allison and T.J; sisters, Diane (Rocky) Rothenthaller of Grand Rapids and Debbie (Ron) Uhrik of Stevensville; brothers, Mike (Nova) Little, Orville Kessinger Jr. and Ricky Kessinger, all of Eau Claire; and half-sister, Karen (Steve Comer) Doty of Eau Claire.

Fred passed away on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl W. Little, stepfather, Orville Kessinger, and brother, Terry Little.

Fred's family will gather with friends on Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the New Life Christian Center, 6674 Paw Paw Ave., Coloma, where his funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. led by Brother Rob Cheek. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Wayne "Fred" Little Memorial at Edgewater Bank in Coloma. McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home, Dowagiac is serving the family.

Eric Dean Clark

COLOMA - Eric's life began July 28, 1973, in Newport, Ark. Shortly after he was born Eric's family moved to the Coloma/Watervliet area. Eric was a self-employed painter who enjoyed camping, fishing, drawing, helping others and seeing how things worked in his spare time.

Eric loved spending time with his family which includes his son, Keegan Clark; girlfriend, Angela Ramirez; his mother, Rachel Curry; his father, James Clark; his favorite brother and best friend, Timothy (Chastity) Clark; four sisters, Theresa Clark, Shannon (Mike) Walantyn, Kathryn Curry and Amanda Curry; and six nieces and nephews, Corey, Donavan, Adrianna, Austin, Kalena and Nolan.

Eric died Friday, Sept. 11, 2009. His grandparents, favorite Aunt Ruthie and several cousins preceded Eric in death.

Friends may visit with Eric's family Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet, where funeral services will be celebrated following visitation at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Cemetery, Watervliet. Memorials may be made in Eric's memory in honor of his son, Keegan.

Vernon D. Piedt

BRIDGMAN - Vernon D. Piedt went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 12, 2009, at Woodland Terrace Retirement Community in Bridgman. He is joyfully reunited with the love of his life and soul mate, Velma, who preceded him in death this past February and to whom he was married for 61 years.

Services celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, with Pastor Win Decker officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the funeral home.

Vernon was born on Jan. 14, 1920, in Benton Harbor to John and Olive Piedt (Prillwitz). He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1938 and attended Twin City Business College. He married Velma Elsie Behr on Oct. 25, 1947, at Clay Street Baptist Church in Benton Harbor. Together they had three children, Susan, Stephen and Sheryl.

Vern was co-owner of John E. Piedt & Sons Farm Supply and Garden Center for 42 years. He served in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations with the 814th Aviation Engineer Battalion in England, North Africa, Sicily and mainland Italy. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and a charter member of the Napier Parkview Baptist Church, where he was actively involved in many ministries including congregational song leader, treasurer, usher and member of the choir. Vern loved hunting and fishing at his Canadian retreat, "Preacher's Island" on Big Bear Lake in Ontario.

Vernon is survived by his sister, Lucille Garbuschewski (Kurt); and three children, Susan Mueller (Larry) of Mason, Stephen Piedt (Barb) of Grand Rapids and Sheryl Kaptur (Drew) of South Haven. He was the grandfather of five, Brenton House (Lisa), Blake House (Kelly), Troy Kaptur, Hannah Piedt and Wade Kaptur; and great-grandfather of eight.

In addition to his parents John and Olive Piedt (Prillwitz), he was preceded in death by his brother, Darrell, and wife, Velma.

Memorial donations may be made out to Hospice at Home, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, and Woodland Terrace Retirement Community in Bridgman.

Victoria Ann Boothby Ross

BENTON HARBOR - Victoria Ann Boothby Ross, formerly of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, passed away peacefully at Penbay Medical Center in Rockport, Maine, on Sept. 6, 2009. She suffered a stroke on Matinicus Island on August 17.

Victoria was the daughter of James and Victoria Boothby, formerly of St. Joseph. Born in Chicago, Ill., and raised in Benton Harbor, Mich., Victoria graduated from Benton Harbor High School as class valedictorian. She received a B.A. in philosophy from Barnard College and was an early recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship. Following her graduation from Barnard, Victoria studied at the Old Vic School in London.

Victoria was the wife of H. Stewart Ross, who was Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in St. Joe. They were divorced in 1968.

Victoria was very involved in local theater during her time in the Twin Cities. She was Anna in "The King and I" with the Twin City Players and directed "Philadelphia, Here I Come" and "Everyman, " among others.

Following her divorce, Victoria moved to New York City, where she had a rich and varied career in the theater, which included Broadway performances in "Stepping Out, " "Stanley" and "Waiting in the Wings." She performed in regional theaters around the country. She could be seen regularly on "All My Children" in the 1980s and had occasional roles in "Guiding Light" and "Another World." In films she could seen in "Goodbye Girl, " "Green Card, " and most recently as an elegant matriarch in "The Nanny Diaries." Favorite roles included Hannah in "Spitfire Grill, " Miss Havisham in "Great Expectations, " Amanda in "Glass Menagerie, " Kate in "All My Sons" and several roles in Shakespeare's plays.

Victoria is survived by her children - Sarah of Orca's Island, Wash., Deborah of Yonkers, N.Y., Harry of Vinalhaven, Maine, and James of Brooklyn, N.Y.; grandchildren - Makala, Nora, Ella, Harry, Todd, Alice and Colin; her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Joan Boothby, and niece, Johanna, all formerly of St. Joseph; and cousins, Bryce and Bette Boothby of St. Joseph. She is also survived by her former husband, H. Stewart Ross of Everett, Wash., with whom she remained friends.

Services will be held in Yonkers, N.Y., and Matinicus, Maine.
