Edward Tokarczyk

Edward Joseph Tokarczyk, 79, of Fruitport died June 19, 1999.

He was born Feb. 7, 1920 in Cook County, Chicago, Ill. to Thomas and Anna (Majsterkirvicz) Tokarczyk. On May 4, 1944 he married Jacqueline Marie VerPlank of Spring Lake. They had been married 55 years at the time of her death, June 3, 1992.

Mr. Tokarczyk was a skilled tool and die maker, and master carpenter. He enjoyed tailoring, bird watching and gardening. Mr. Tokarcyzk was employed by Anderson Bolling, Brunswick and Hayworth Corp.

Survivors include his children, Judy Gardner, Fruitport; Jack (Corky) Tokarczyk, Grand Rapids; Sharon (Michael) Geistel, Spring Lake; Craig (Charlene) Tokarczyk, Fruitport; Anita (Craig) Orquist, Norton Shores, and Linda Tokarczyk, Fruitport; eight grandchildren; five brothers and sisters, Irene Brown, Mary (Charles) Vogler, Grand Haven; Kasmer (Cassie) Tokarczyk; Joseph Tokarczyk and Chester Tokarczyk, Muskegon.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Van Zantwick Bartels Kammeraad, Inc. of Spring Lake.A memorial mass for Mr. Edward Joseph Tokarczyk will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake with Rev. Fr. Anthony Vainavicz as celebrant. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery. Friends may meet the family at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions are encouraged to be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community.

Wayne Raskiewicz

Wayne A. Raskiewicz, 38, of Grand Haven died Sunday, June 20, 1999 at North Ottawa Community Hospital.

He was born in Grand Haven on June 6, 1981 to Edward and Connie (Phipps) Raskiewicz Jr. Mr. Raskiewicz had been employed as a machine operator at Shape Corp. He was a 1981 graduate of Grand Haven High School and served in the U.S. Air Force. He loved fishing.

Survivors include his mother, Connie Hanks, Grand Haven; father, Edward Raskiewwicz Jr., Grand Haven; one son, Dustin Raskiewicz, Fargo, N.D.; one daughter, Katie Raskiewicz, Fargo, N.D.; two brothers, Vance (Rexann) Raskiewicz, Hemingford, Neb. and Curt (Randi) Raskiewicz, Coopersville; grandmother, Marjorie Phipps, Grand Haven; special friend, Cindy Reule, Fargo, N.D. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Grand Haven. The funeral service for Mr. Wayne A. Raskiewicz will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Clock Funeral Home of Grand Haven with Pastor Salvadore Pirrotta officiating. Interment will be at Pine Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, and 12-1 p.m. Tuesday at Clock Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Ottawa Shores Humane Society, 7982 West Olive Road, West Olive, MI 49460.

Edith Pew

Member of St. John's Episcopal Church

Edith S. Pew, 98, of Spring Lake died at North Ottawa Community Hospital on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002.

She had been a resident of Mt. Pleasant since 1937 and moved to Spring Lake in 1996.

She was born in Franklin, Penn. on May 31, 1904, the daughter of Nancy and William James.

Mrs. Pew attended Wilson College and Grove City College in Pennsylvania, majoring in art and business and where she met her husband, Howard C. Pew. After raising her daughter Nancy Jeanne Huggins, she was a receptionist at Ronan Hall, a boys' dormitory at Central Michigan University, and then worked for many years in the college's business office until retirement.

She was a member of the Community Church in Mt. Pleasant and attended St. John's Episcopal Church while living in Spring Lake. She loved to read and listen to music, particularly operas. She supported several missionaries and was very active in her church.

Mrs. Pew was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 60 years. She leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Jim and Jeanne Huggins, five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6 at the 5 p.m. contemporary service, which she liked. It will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Grand Haven. Mrs. Pew willed her body to the Medical School at Michigan State University for teaching purposes for the advancement of medical science and teaching. She would appreciate that memorials be given to St. John's Episcopal Church.

Baptist 'Bappy' Mercurio

Played Santa Claus for GHAPS

Baptist "Bappy" A. Mercurio, 84, of Spring Lake (formerly of Marion St. in Grand Haven) died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at a local hospital.

He was born Nov. 9, 1917 to Anthony (Tony) and Santa (Mercurio) Mercurio in Richmond, Ind.; and married Virginia Maciejewski on June 9, 1941 in Farmington.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Mercurio worked for Mercurio Brothers Bananas in Detroit, and retired from Micoit Cartage Co. of Detroit in 1980. He moved to Grand Haven in 1980, and just recently moved to Spring Lake.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Spring Lake Yacht Club. Mr. Mercurio was a volunteer at North Ottawa Community Hospital and the Farmers Market; and played Santa Claus for Grand Haven Area Public Schools during the holidays.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Virginia; daughter, Patricia Mercurio of Phoenix, Ariz.; son, Frank (Sandy) Mercurio, Spring Lake; three grandchildren: Beverlie (Jeff) Berry, Alissa (Adam) Rowe and Kimberly Mercurio, one great-granddaughter, Megan Berry; his brother, John (Rose) Mercurio, Grand Haven, also nieces and nephews.

His sisters Frances and Catherine, and brother Joseph preceded him in death.

Arrangements are being handled by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad of Grand Haven.

A funeral mass for Mr. Mercurio will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Rev. William Langlois as celebrant. Friends may meet the family from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community or St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Ronald Metzler

Retired from the U.S. Air Force

Ronald M. Metzler, 68, of Grand Haven died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his home.

He was born June 4, 1934 to Irvin and Alice (Solman) Metzler in Grand Haven. He married Eleanor "Ellie" Petersen on Feb. 1, 2002 in Grand Haven. His first wife Mary Martha Decker preceded him in death in 1995.

Mr. Metzler was a 1952 graduate of Grand Haven High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955, retiring as a Sr. Master Sgt. in 1979; and had been a cabinetmaker following his military service.

Mr. Metzler was an avid bowler (winning many awards), and enjoyed golf and working in his yard. He was a member of the Animal Placement Bureau of Lansing, an animal rescue organization.

Survivors include his wife, Ellie; stepdaughter, Julia Keasey and stepson, Matthew (Angela) Keasey both of Grand Haven; five step-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Frances Metzler of Arizona, and Margaret Ruth McPhee of Angola, Ind.

His father, mother and brother Richard preceded him in death.

Arrangements are being handled by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad of Grand Haven.

A graveside service for Mr. Metzler will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Lake Forest Cemetery with Rev. Lary Jackson officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community or the Animal Placement Bureau of Lansing.

William Heinz Retired from VanderWall Brothers Block Co.

William D. Heinz, 82, of Grand Haven died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at home.

He was born Oct. 2, 1919 to William and Josephine (Cushman) Heinz, Sr., in Macintosh, S.D. He married Relma J. VanderWall on May 1, 1981 in Grand Haven at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Mr. Heinz had been an area resident most of his life and had been employed by VanderWall Brothers Block Co., retiring in 1982. He was a Veteran of WWII. Mr. Heinz was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a life member of Sgt. Alvin Jonker-VFW Post 2326 and F.O. Eagles-Aerie 925. His interests included deer hunting, camping, gardening and saw sharpening.

Survivors include his wife Relma; daughter, Sue (John) Hammond of Grand Haven; sons Donald (Bonnie) Heinz of West Olive and Rich (Chris) Heinz of Grand Haven; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; stepdaughters, Cindy (Roger) Smith of Howard City, Linda (Richard) Dale of West Olive and Debra Nash of Indiana; eight step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rose VanderJagt of Grand Haven, Eleanor (George) Spink of Spring Lake and Ruby (John) Appel of Grand Haven; two brothers, Robert (Eleanor) Heinz of Spring Lake and Karl (Pearl) Heinz of Spring Lake; also many nieces and nephews.

His children's mother Mary (Appel) died June 24, 1979; his brother Owen, and sisters Dorothy, Anna and Gertrude also preceded him in death.

Arrangements are being handled by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad of Grand Haven.

A funeral service for Mr. Heinz will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Roberto Beccera officiating. Friends may meet the family from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Lake Shore Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community.

Nancy Smith

Nancy J. Smith, 71, of Flint, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Grand Blanc, where she resided at Genesys Convalescent Home.

Surviving are three daughters, Pamela S. Blandford of Swartz Creek, Lorie J. Smith of Luther and Nancy Kay (Michael) Greene of Grand Haven; 11 grandchildren: Sarah, Amy, Curtis, Nicholas, Karly, Cortney, Cassie, David, Joshua, Nicholas and Benjamin; two great-grandchildren, Chris and Olivia.

She was preceded in death by her husband Levi J. Smith in 1989, son Jay Guy Smith, mother Mary C. Irons, brother Jerry Irons, and sister Wanda Cole.

A memorial service for Nancy J. Smith will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Genesys Convalescent Home in Grand Blanc, with Sister Dismas Brennan officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the family c/o Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint, MI 48507.
