GILLIAM, Ruby L. – Age 76, of Holly, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at her residence. Funeral services will be held 4 PM Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Visitation will be held from 3 PM until the time of funeral Saturday. Mrs. Gilliam was born August 17, 1926 in Almar, NC, the daughter of Paul and Iva Treece. She was a nurse’s aid at St. Joseph Hospital for many years. Surviving are: three children, Terrie Pulp of Winston – Salem, NC, Bonnie and husband, Lee Kibler of Holly, Kim and wife, Sherrie Bowers of Julian, NC; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

LAWRENCE ALLEN BATROW

Died on: 05/21/2003 Flint, Michigan

BATROW, Lawrence Allen – Age 55, of Flint, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday, May 24, 2003 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Visitation will be held 3-9 PM Friday and 11 AM until the time of service Saturday. Veteran Honors will be performed immediately following the funeral service under the auspices of 40/8 Voiture #1116. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to American Legion Red Arrow Post # 151. Mr. Batrow was born July 25, 1947 in Flint, the son of William Stanley and Ellen Rose (Provance) Batrow. He had resided in Flint his entire life. Mr. Batrow was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of American Legion Red Arrow Post # 151 for 29 years, 40/8 Voiture #1116 for 28 years. He had attended Mott Community College and was employed by General Motors for several years. He was also employed at the Flint Golf Club and he was a Union Steward. Surviving are: two daughters, Ellen Evelyn and husband, Steven Kheibler of Traverse City, Linda Ann Batrow of Zilwaukee; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Amber, Ashley, and Steven; mother and step-father, Ellen and James Waller of Flint; brother, David and wife, Becky Waller of Freesoil, MI; two nephews, Andrew and Michael; two nieces, Davi Lynn and Mary Ellen Waller; several uncles, aunts, and cousins. He was preceded in death by: his father, William Stanley Batrow; wife, Jeanette.

LEO GARRETT CONROY

Age: 91
Died on: 06/12/2003 Owosso, MI

CONROY, Leo Garrett – Age 91, of Gaines/Byron, died Thursday, June 12, 2003 at Owosso Memorial Hospital. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 AM Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Gaines with Fr. Robert McKeon officiating. Interment will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-5 and 7-9 PM Monday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. A rosary will be prayed and Knights of Columbus Service will be held at 7:30 PM. Visitation will also be held 9 AM until the time of mass Tuesday at the church. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund. Mr. Conroy was born September 22, 1911 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of James and Edith (Emory) Conroy. He married Dorothy Eileen Cooney on September 7, 1931 in Angola, IN. Mr. Conroy retired from Grand Truck Railroad, as an Engineer, in 1976 after 30 years of service. Mr. Conroy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #12186. Surviving are: wife, Dorothy Eileen of Gaines/Byron; daughter, Lauretta Ann and husband, Gerald Bradley of Durand; three sons, John Robert and wife, Nola of Filmore, CA, James Edward and wife, Delores of Swartz Creek, Dennis Leo and wife, Virginia of Holland; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: five brothers; two sisters; son, Joseph Michael; five grandchildren.

ROBERT LYLE HOLMES

Born on: 07/17/1917 Mt. Morris, MI
Age: 85
Died on: 06/16/2003 Durand

HOLMES, Robert Lyle – Age 85, of Durand, formerly of Flint, died Monday, June 16, 2003 at Pleasantview-Shiawassee Medical Center. Interment of cremains will be held 10 AM Friday, June 20, 2003 at Sunset Hills Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 1 PM Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2210 N. Franklin St., Flint with Pastor Harry White officiating. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the National Hemophilia Foundation or the American Cancer Society. Mr. Holmes was born July 17, 1917 in Mt. Morris, the son of Harold L. and Mable (Hudelymer) Holmes and had lived in the Flint area his entire life. He married Iva Atwell on July 3, 1936 and she preceded him in death. Mr. Holmes retired from General Motors as a tool and die maker in 1975 after 36 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and American Legion Post # 110 in Port Charlotte, FL. Surviving are: daughter, Linda L. Keely and husband, Gerald of Durand; son, Michael B. Holmes and wife, Linda of Cape Coral, FL; son-in-law, Fred Shaltz of Fenton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, Thomas E. Holmes and wife, Marlene of Durand; five sisters-in-law, Irene Murphy, Donna Pierson and husband, Dennis, Joyce (Wells) Gray, all of Flint, Lois Sullivan and husband, Bernie of Lennon/Arcadia, FL, Nancy Carley and husband, Leslie of Lennon/Arcadia, FL; many nieces and nephews. Mr. Holmes was also preceded in death by: his parents; daughter, Judy Shaltz; son, Gary Robert Holmes; sister, Kathleen Merrow.

RHESA ETHEL ALEXANDER

Born on: 03/12/1907 Rankin, MI
Age: 96
Died on: 06/18/2003 Swartz Creek, MI

ALEXANDER, Rhesa Ethel – Age 96, of Swartz Creek, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at her residence. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, June 21, 2003 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek with Rev. David E. Ray officiating. Interment will be held at Bristol Cemetery, Flint. Visitation will be from 5-9 PM Thursday and 1-9 PM Friday at the funeral home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the South Mundy United Methodist Church or Genesys Hospice. Rhesa was born in Rankin, Michigan on March 12, 1907 to Roy and Nettie (Tupper) Spillane. She grew up in Flint Township. She graduated from Flint Central High School in 1925 then went to County Normal. Rhesa taught school at O’Dell and Mary Crapo Schools. She married John R. Alexander in 1928. He preceded her in death in 1979. Mrs. Alexander was a member of South Mundy United Methodist Church, where she played piano for the Sunday School until March of this year. She was a member of UMW and the Third Thursday Ladies. She loved to make rugs, write letters, play the piano, and cook. Surviving are: eight children, Ruth (Ray) Smith, Bob Alexander, Judy (Jerry) Parsons, Ted (Ellen) Alexander, Bernetta Alexander, all of Swartz Creek, Viola (Hayes) Holboth of Fowlerville, John (Jo Ann) Alexander of Durand, Rose Carnes and Rhesa (Tom) Watrous, all of Linden; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Beulah Spillane; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mrs. Alexander was also preceded in death by: daughter, Helen Alexander; son, Eugene Alexander; grandson, Tom Holboth; her parents; three sisters; and one brother. The family extends a special thank you to Genesys Hospice for their care and support.

LARRY R. LAWSON

LAWSON, Larry R. – Age 53, of Mundy Twp./Swartz Creek, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Genesys Health Park. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, June 21, 2003 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 6273 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek with Dr. Roy McLaughlin officiating. Interment will be held at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-5 and 7-9 PM Thursday and Friday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Visitation will also be held 11 AM until the time of the service Saturday at the church. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Larry R. Lawson Memorial Fund. Mr. Lawson was born April 10, 1950 in Bald Knob, AR, the son of Raymond and Geraldine (Burns) Lawson. He was a graduate of Bald Knob High School and University of Arkansas. Mr. Lawson married Brenda A. Bone on June 9, 1973 in Clio, MI. He resided in Mundy Twp./Swartz Creek for the last 30 years. Mr. Lawson was employed by Delphi with over 30 years of service. He was very active in the community being a member of Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church in Swartz Creek, where he was an usher, past member of the Swartz Creek School Board, Chairman of Swartz Creek Youth Athletics for 10 years and was an avid outdoorsman. Surviving are: wife, Brenda; daughter, Lauren M. Lawson; two sons, Brandon N. Lawson and Brent M. Lawson, all of Swartz Creek; father, Raymond Lawson of Bald Knob, AR; two brothers, Gary and wife, Kathy Lawson of Searcy, AR, Dale Lawson of Bald Knob, AR; sister, LaDonna and husband, Charles Thompson of Bald Knob, AR. Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his mother, Geraldine Lawson.
