Harold Zehner

WATERVLIET - Harold Zehner, 81, of Watervliet, died Oct. 6, 2000, at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet, where visitation will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek, Mich. Memorials may be given to the family.

Mr. Zehner was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Niles. He had worked at DuWel, Dowagiac, and was a crossing guard at Watervliet Public Schools. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of VFW Post No. 6803, Watervliet.

Survivors include his wife, Mary (Wilkinson) Zehner of Watervliet; four daughters - Brenda Brown of Dowagiac, Sandra (Walter) Hatfield of Benton Harbor, Sharon Kay (Richard) Gatchell of Coloma, and Ruth (Charles) Rantz of Watervliet; four sons - Harold Zehner Jr., Michael Zehner, Phillip (Joan) Zehner and George (Holly) Zehner, all of Watervliet; 28 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Hilairo Carrera Sr.

ST. JOSEPH - Hilairo A. Carrera Sr., 73, of St. Joseph died Oct. 13, 2000, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kerley & Starks Funeral Home, St. Joseph, where visitation will be held Tuesday from noon until the time of service.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to Heartland Peruvian Horse Club, Junior Riders, in care of Richard Apsely.

Mr. Carrera was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Lima, Peru. He was a Maestro Chalan. Hilairo comes from five generations of Maestro Chalan, world renowned Peruvian Paso horse trainers.

Survivors include: his wife, Kaohinani Carrera, whom he married on July 29, 1987, in Reno, Nev.; sons - Amador Carrera of Solvang, Calif., and Hilairo A. Carrera Jr. of Vacaville, Calif.; nine daughters - Isabell Carrera of Peru, Maria Esther Pena of Oakland, Calif., Carrman Carrera, Aide Carrera, Eva Carrera, Flor Carrera, Esperanza Carrera, Efiguenia Carrera, all of Peru; daughter, Manulani T. Cook and granddaughter, Kaohinani Mary Cook of Troutdale, Ore.; 20 grandchildren; a sister, Florentina Basurco of Peru; his guardian angel Elizabeth Warren, he loved you greatly.

Clifford Martin Brown II

HARTFORD - Clifford Martin Brown II, 63, of Baldwin, Mich., formerly of Hartford, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Ann Arbor.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Hartford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Hansen officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford. Burial with military rites will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hartford United Methodist Church JOASH Fund.

Mr. Brown was born Dec. 3, 1936, in Moline, Ill., the son of Lowell and Helen (Trigg) Brown, both of whom precede him in passing. He retired from Whirlpool Corporation in 1996 after 33 years of service. Mr. Brown was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of the Hartford United Methodist Church and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca, N.Y. He gave bird presentations at schools, state parks, senior centers and churches. Mr. Brown was active with his family, grandchildren and community.

Survivors include: his wife, Connie, whom he married on Dec. 2, 1961; daughter, Tamara (David) Kling of Watervliet; son, Clifford Martin Brown III of Kalamazoo; grandson, Kendall Kling of Watervliet; granddaughter, Brooke Kling of Watervliet; and five brothers - Christopher Brown and Doug Johnson, both of Illinois, and Dan Brown, Douglas Brown and Donald Brown, all of Michigan.

Derophyne Cornelius

BENTON HARBOR - Derophyne Cornelius, 38, of Benton Harbor, was pulled off mortal and put on immortality, making the transition to be in the presence of our Lord on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000.

Visitation will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Robbins Brothers Funeral Home, Benton Harbor. Cremation will follow the viewing.

Derophyne was born Aug. 12, 1962, in Benton Harbor, to the union of John and Johnnie Mae (Henderson) Cornelius. She was formerly employed as a manufacturing laborer.

She leaves to cherish fond memories: daughter, Brandy Cornelius of Benton Harbor; sons - Charles Cornelius of Benton Harbor and Leontis Cornelius of Carson City, Mich.; grandchild, Bre Sean Echols of Benton Harbor; sister, Darlene Cornelius of Benton Harbor; brothers - J.B. (Lennett) Lloyd of Kalamazoo, Darren (Kathy) Cornelius of Grand Rapids, Dion (Angel) Cornelius of Elkhart, Ind., Dennis Cornelius, Duane Cornelius, Johnny Cornelius and Tyrone Cornelius, all of Benton Harbor; stepbrother, Tommie Jackson of Benton Harbor; stepsisters, Lorraine Hill of Chicago and Vera Mae Jones of Benton Harbor; a friend, Chester Henry of Benton Harbor; special friends - Dorothy Horne, Robin Taylor, Mynita Williams, Valerie Young and Mary Ann McKinney, all of Benton Harbor; aunts - Gladyes (Leroy) Buckner of Benton Harbor, Tcie Mae (William) Williams of Chicago; uncles - Robert (Velma) Cornelius and Jesse Frank Lusk, both of Camden, N.J.; special Aunt Racheal (Bill) Wagner of Benton Harbor; special cousins - Robert Bud Cornelius and Leroy Buckner Jr., both of Benton Harbor; godmothers - Gertrude Taylor, Jean Taylor and Emma J. Hill, all of Benton Harbor.

She was preceded in death by: her mother, Johnnie Mae Cornelius on Sept. 9, 1970; her father, John Cornelius on May 11, 1998; a sister, Denise Cornelius on Nov. 9, 1971; stepmother, Annie L. Jackson Cornelius in 1994; stepsister, Jeanette J. Williams in 1997; and special friends, Bennie Doster and Lester Grays.

Helen Barber

LAWRENCE - Helen Barber, 98, of Lawrence, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at LakeView Continuing Care Center, Lawton.

As to Helen's wishes, cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held at a later date in Hamilton Cemetery, Decatur. Memorial contributions may be made to Lawrence Quick Response or Hamilton Township Restoration of Grange Hall. The family is being served by the Leonard Funeral Home, Lawrence.

Helen was born June 17, 1902, in Hamilton Township, the daughter of Charles and Florence (Cole) Barber. She was a secretary/receptionist for most of her working life.

Survivors include: a niece, Clara Ann (John) Bowlby of South Bend; three nephews - Dean (Marty) Barber of Paw Paw, Harold (Susan) Barber of Kalamazoo and Charles (Judy) Moden of Lawrence; grandnephews - Stephen Barber, Rick Barber, James Keefe and Michael Keefe; and grandnieces - Cheryl Barber, Teri Barber, Beth Keefe, Lori Cox, Lisa Lundquist, Wendy Murney and Shellie Lowe. She was preceded in death by a sister, Laura Moden, and two brothers - Frank Barber and Glen Barber.

John W. Schultz

ST. JOSEPH - John W. Schultz, 68, of Mystic, Conn., former area resident, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, New London, Conn.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lambtown Cemetery, Ledyard, Conn. There are no calling hours. Byles-Groton Funeral Home, 310 Thames St., Groton, Conn., is in charge of arrangements. Contributions in his memory may be made to Lakes Pond Baptist Church, 1144 Hartford Road, Waterford, Conn. 06385.

Mr. Schultz was born April 16, 1932, in St. Joseph, the son of Clarence and Lillian Graber Schultz. For many years, Mr. Schultz owned and operated Spring Valley Cleaning Service in Groton.

He is survived by his wife, Irene W. Schultz, whom he married on May 5, 1962, at the Groton Heights Baptist Church. Also surviving is a son, Duane I. Schultz of Mystic; and a sister, Joyce Stuppy of Valparaiso, Ind.

He was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Irving C. Schultz.

William C. Adler

ST. JOSEPH - William C. Adler, 78, of St. Joseph, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, St. Joseph with the Rev. Tom Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the Stevensville American Legion Post 568. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. The family is being served by Starks & Menchinger through Legacy Family Funeral Services, Matthew R. Purchase Chapel, Berrien Springs.

Mr. Adler was born June 15, 1922, in St. Joseph to Carl W. and Helen (Reinhardt) Adler. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Force. On May 3, 1947, he married the former Wanda S. Domanski in St. Joseph. Bill was employed for many years as an outboard motor mechanic at the former Sportsman's Port in St. Joseph. He was employed as a service technician at Sears Roebuck, Benton Harbor, retiring in 1984 after 28 years. He then worked in the same capacity at Whirlpool Tech Care from 1988 to 2000. Bill was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Stevensville American Legion Post 568 and the 1940 graduating class of St. Joseph High School. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, Lauren. Bill will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Adler is survived by his wife, Wanda of St. Joseph; two daughters - Nancy (David) Kietzer of Stevensville and Karla Matheson of St. Joseph; his granddaughter, Lauren Matheson of St. Joseph; a sister, Vera (James) Lingard of Bradenton, Fla.; a nephew, William Lingard of Englewood, Colo.; two brothers-in-law - Mitch Domanski of St. Joseph and Ted Domanski of Benton Harbor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Stanley Adler in 1952.

Adolph "Bud' Pjesky

ST. JOSEPH -- Adolph "Bud" Pjesky, 84, of St. Joseph, peacefully went to meet his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at home.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Joseph, with the Rev. Barry Sommerfield officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, of which he was a member.

Mr. Pjesky was born Oct. 13, 1917, in Burton, Kan., to Gustav and Olga (Schultz) Pjesky. On Oct. 28, 1938, he married the former Alma Schmidtke at Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Joseph. Bud served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in Germany. He retired from Whirlpool Corp., St. Joseph Division in 1984, after 31 years of employment.

Mr. Pjesky is survived by his wife, Alma of St. Joseph; his son, Jim (Patricia) Pjesky of St. Joseph; his daughter, Janice (Hugo) Hermann of Rochester Hills, Mich.; four grandchildren -- Brian (Bridgitt) Hermann, Todd (Sarah) Hermann, Patrick Pjesky and Lyndsay Pjesky; his great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Hermann; two sisters -- Frieda Cole of Watervliet, Shirley (Pete) Headle of Watervliet; and his brother, Dan (Jane) Pjesky of Prescott, Ariz.
