Dorothy Walton

COLOMA -- On May 29, 2004, Dorothy Walton, 84, of Coloma left this earth surrounded by her family. Dorothy passed away after a four-month struggle recovering from heart surgery at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.

There will be a celebration of life service at 1 p.m. Friday, June 4, at Davidson Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, Coloma, with Pastor Mark Cowell officiating. Burial will be in Coloma Cemetery. Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy requested memorials be made to the Retts Syndrome Association, 9121 Piscataway Road, No. 2B, Clinton, Md. 20735, 800-818-7388, a disorder that affected her great-grandchild, Chelsea.

Dorothy was one of 13 children born in Dresden, N.D., to German immigrants, William and Alvina Bohn, who were grain farmers. Shortly after graduating from Langdon High School in North Dakota, she accompanied several of her brothers to the Benton Harbor area. A short time later she met and married Joseph Walton. They were married 52 years until Joseph passed away in 1993. They had lived in the Coloma area for 60 years, where they owned and operated City Ice and Beverage for 30 years.

In addition to being a homemaker, Dorothy volunteered for 15 years at the Watervliet Community Hospital. She took great pride in her home, enjoyed gardening, flowers and the wild birds, but most of all she cherished her family.

She had two daughters, Darlene (Wes) Hazen of Coloma and Linda Ridge of Watervliet; a stepson, Gerald Walton (Rose) of Dallas; six grandchildren -- Wes Hazen Jr. (friend, Cindy Villareal) of Millburg, Christopher Hazen of Red Cliff, Colo., Shelly (Dana) Perry of St. Joseph, Jennifer Ridge (fianc/, James Burrow) of Watervliet, Donna Pool of Waco, Texas, and Melissa Walton of Dallas.

Her greatest joys later in life were her seven great-grandchildren -- Megan Smalley, Lauren Perry, Chelsea Ridge, Dino Roumeloitis, Olivia Ridge, Michael Hazen and Lily Perry.

She also is survived by her sister, Irene Walton of St. Joseph; and a brother, Helmet Bohn of Benton Harbor.

During her life she acquired many wonderful friends. Even though many miles apart, her special friend, Sara Kliger, always remained close in her heart throughout the years.

Dorothy was a woman of integrity, compassion, strength and honesty and was happiest when she was taking care of her home and family, her birds and flowers. She loved to bake, and no family member's birthday was ever forgotten without a cake or pie. There aren't words to describe how much she will be missed.
