Anthony Joseph 'Tony' Friesl Jr.

ST. JOSEPH -- Anthony Joseph "Tony" Friesl Jr., 69, devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather, of St. Joseph passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church Street, St. Joseph. A luncheon will follow at The Rose Center. Family burial services will be held at a later date at Hickory Bluff Cemetery, Stevensville. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with Liturgical Prayers recited at 7:30 p.m. at Kerley-Starks and Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to the Foundation of Elkdom Major Projects-Special Needs Children.

Tony was born June 26, 1934 in Detroit, to Anthony J. Sr. and Glada (Brown) Friesl. He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. On June 3, 1961, he married the former Barbara Wenger in Benton Harbor. Tony was a teacher of the sciences for Lakeshore Public Schools at both the middle school and high school, retiring after 31 years of employment. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph, St. Joseph Elks Lodge 541, VFW Post 10093 of Safety Harbor, Fla., and American Legion Post 568 of Stevensville. Tony was a man who loved family, golf, gardening, his home in Florida, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Tony is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons, Anthony J. III (Julie) Friesl of Alpharetta, Ga.; Joseph (Jennifer) Friesl of Porter, Ind.; two daughters, Colleen Friesl of Storrs-Mansfield, Conn.; Amy (John) Phillips of Wyoming, Mich.; six grandchildren -- Jack, Emily, and Drew Friesl; Anthony Joseph IV and Nathan Friesl; and Justin Phillips; his mother, Glada Quinn of Lansing; his brother, Patrick (Jenny) Quinn of Lansing; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Evelyn Wenger of Lakeside, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Michael (Mike) Tim Ramsey

SOUTH HAVEN -- Michael Tim Ramsey, 47, passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, March 19, 2004.

Mike was born to Gena and E.A. "Lucky" Ramsey on July 14, 1956, and spent the first 20 years of his life in South Haven. His beloved father preceded him in death.

Mike came to Texas in his late 20's. He was employed for many years until his death as a statewide electrician for Temple Inland where he made many close friends. He married the love of his life, Lisa Wittwer on Sept. 16, 1995.

Mike was so loved by his wife, Lisa and son, Jake Michael. He would always tell them that "Whoop, you make my world go round." In addition to his wife and son, Mike is survived by his mother, Gena of South Haven; brother, Rick (Becky) and their three sons all of Kalamazoo; as well as many in-laws; nieces; and nephews.

Mike was a devoted husband and father. His friends and family will remember his as a loving, funny, generous man who was always doing things for others.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Cook-Walden Funeral Home in Austin. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 22 in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to The American Heart Association or in the name of Jake Ramsey, 10909 Hard Rock Drive, Austin, Texas 78750.

Violet Mae Neidlinger

BARODA -- Violet Mae Neidlinger, 87, formerly of Baroda, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 8, 2004, at Dowagiac Nursing Home, with her family by her side.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. March 12 at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, with the Rev. Philip Prenkert officiating. Burial will be in New Troy Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan.

Mrs. Neidlinger was born March 9, 1916, in Oronoko Township. She was a life long resident of Baroda. Violet was a homemaker and a member of Church of God, Baroda. On July 30, 1935, in St. Joseph, she married Herbert Neidlinger. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her parents, George Houseworth and Lillian Viola (Shimm) Houseworth.

Survivors are: sons -- William (Micky) Neidlinger of Stevensville, Richard (Ruth) Neidlinger of Texas, Dennis (Barb) Neidlinger of New Troy, Kenneth (Marie) Neidlinger of St. Joseph and Chuck (Alice) Neidlinger of Texas; daughters -- Judy (Matt) Kickles of Baroda and Sue (Rev. Philip Prenkert) of Benton, Ark.; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Elwin Houseworth of St. Joseph; and sisters -- Donnabelle Saunders of Indiana and Arbutus (Hank) Blaylock of Buchanan.

Linda L.(Churchwell) Bailey

HAGAR SHORES -- Linda L. (Churchwell) Bailey, 49, of Hagar Shores, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2004, due to a tragic auto accident in Ionia.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, at the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in St. Joseph, where visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Burial will be in Spring Run Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorial donations may be made to Animal Aid.

Linda was born July 10, 1954, in St. Joseph, to Arthur and Imogene (Trisinger) Pullins.

She was a very loving mother and a kind-hearted person, always willing to help someone in need.

Linda had many close friends that will miss her dearly. She enjoyed going to garage sales and collected a number of things. Her favorite was a vast collection of clowns. Linda was a computer fanatic. She loved her two dogs, Rusty and Tiffany.

Linda worked at Heath Co., Connie's Bar, and The Sportsman Bar in the past. She married Gary Bailey on Aug. 19, 1993. She became a co-driver with her husband as an over-the-road semi driver for Boomer Transportation.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Bailey; her mother, Imogene "Gene" Chester of Stevensville; two sons, Eddie Churchwell Jr. of Harrisburg, Ark., and Michael (Kachina) Churchwell of Buchanan; a brother, Larry (Roslyn) Ludwig of Lawton; sister, Debra Chester of Stevensville; two stepsons, Gary Bailey Jr. of Vestaburg, Mich. and Christopher Bailey of Edmore, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.

Linda was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Pullins; stepfather, Michael Chester; and by her grandparents, Edward and Juanita Grewe.

Arthur A. Mashke

ST. JOSEPH -- Arthur A. Mashke, 81, of St. Joseph passed away, Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.

Private family services will be held at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph, with the Rev. Thomas Batsky officiating. Memorials may be made to Berrien County Cancer Service. Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, St. Joseph, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mashke was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Benton Harbor, to August and Anna (Kasischke) Mashke.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On May 7, 1949, he married the former Mary Ann Tober, in St. Joseph. Art retired from Clark Equipment Co., in 1981, after 42 years of employment. Art was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Joseph.

Mr. Mashke is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; son, Michael Mashke of Granger, Ind.; daughter, Nancy Iannelli of Nashua, N.H.; and two grandsons, Michael and Patrick Mashke.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers and one sister.

Richard R. Schmaltz

BARODA -- Richard Raymond Schmaltz, 73, of Baroda passed away on Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at his home.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bridgman, with the Rev. William Gleason officiating. Burial was in Ruggles Cemetery, Baroda. Friends met with the family from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, at Boyd-Pike Funeral Home, Bridgman. Memorial contributions may be given to the General Fund of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bridgman. Mr. Schmaltz was born July 11, 1930, in Baroda, the son of Henry G. and Bernice (Shafer) Schmaltz. On June 13, 1953, he married Dollie Sebasty in Buchanan.

He owned and operated Richard Schmaltz Television Service for 25 years. He retired in 1994 after 35 years of service from Leco Corp. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time fishing and reading and was a charter member of the Southwestern Michigan Steelheaders Association.

Survivors are his wife of 50 years, Dollie; his mother, Bernice Schmaltz; a daughter, Lisa (Rein) Schroeder of Union Pier; a son, Lynn Alan (Gina) Schmaltz of Baroda; three granddaughters -- Jennifer and Karrin Schroeder and Amber Lewis; and two sisters-in-law -- Barbara Schmaltz of Lowell and Charlotte Schmaltz of Baroda.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rita; his father, Henry G. Schmaltz; and two brothers, Arlyn and Duane Schmaltz.

Cheryl Lynn Hampton

BENTON HARBOR -- Cheryl Lynn Hampton was born March 8, 1959, the daughter of Owen Hampton Jr. and Zenovia Coates, in Benton Harbor. Cheryl was a lifelong resident of Benton Harbor.

Cheryl graduated from Benton Harbor High School and attended Lake Michigan College. She was fun-loving and enjoyed her family. She was a member of the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church.

Cheryl went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 22. She leaves to mourn her passing a companion, Ben Leigh Sr.; three sons -- Dontae Hampton, Ben Leigh Jr. and Johnathan Leigh; her mother, Zenovia Coates; four brothers, Ishmail Raheem, Ronald (Jennifer) Singleton, Owen Hampton Craig, and Antonio Craig; two sisters, Ursula Hampton and Okia (James) Strickland; four grandchildren; a maternal grandmother, Annie Taylor; and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Owen Hampton Jr.; one brother, Victor Hampton; paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.

Services will be held Tuesday, March 2, at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. Reynolds Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
