Edwin Norris

Edwin Norris of Eaton Rapids, MI died Monday, July 13,209 at the Heartland Health Care Center in Ionia, MI at the age of 85. Born January 9, 1924 in Belding, MI. Mr. Norris served with the 148th General Hospital Division, during WWII, the Pacific Theater, as a Med Tech 5 and was discharged December 13, 1945. He was a June 1946 graduate of Lansing Eastern High School and retired after 30+ years with the Michigan Dept. of Mental Health. Mr. Norris was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian (Fischel) Norris; his parents; 7 siblings and two step-sisters.

He is survived by daughters, Pamela (Leonard) Bettelyoun of Milan, NM and Kristine Norris of Ionia, MI, also step-sister Geraldine (Herbert) Gilbertson and Iola McClardy, of Holt, MI. Mr. Norris was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, in Eaton Rapids, also the Knights of Columbus, the Ionia American Legion, the Sheridan VFW, Ionia Moose Lodge and the N.R.A.

Funeral services were arranged by Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, MI. Mass was held at St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids on Thursday July 16, 2009. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Garden, Lansing, MI. In lieu of flowers a memorial may be given to The Traveling Vet, in Eaton Rapids, MI.

James O’Brien

James “Jim” E. O’Brien, of Holt, passed away Thursday, April 9 at Eaton Community Hospice. Jim was born March 4, 1940 to Charles and Leto (Crafton) O’Brien in Lansing.

Jim was a former employee of Melling Drop Forge for 25 years, and the Board of Water and Light for 20 years. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, and loved racing cars. Jim was an avid fan of Charlotte sports, especially wrestling. He also belonged to the Shooting Club of Grand Ledge where he won numerous medals for his expert marksmanship. Most of all, Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather; his grandchildren meant the world to him.

Preceding him in death where his parents, and brother, Charles Jr.

Jim is survived by his wife, Doris; three children, Chuck (Dawn), Paula (Ed), Debra (Tom); seven sisters, Pat (Terry), Linda, Bonnie (Daryl), Vickie (Art), Mary (Lavern), JoAnn (Vernon), Terry (Bill); one sister-in-law, Dolores; grandchildren, Robert, Capri, Toby, Tommie, Brian, Lynda (Jesse), Donnie, Jennifer, Shawn, Mary, Jason; great grandchildren, Sarah, Jordan, Conner, Bryce, Lance, Ben, Erin; special friend, Rocky; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 14 at the Potterville United Methodist Church.

For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice, or Potterville United Methodist Church in loving memory of James E. O’Brien.

The family is being served by Chapel in the Pines Funeral Home, Lansing.

Preston Odette

Preston E. “Pres” Odette, 62, of Lansing, our loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away unexpectedly June 13, 2009 at his home. Born October 25, 1946 in Clio, Mich. Preston retired in 2007 as publisher at the Lansing Community Newspapers after 16 years of service. He had also worked in advertising for 20 years at the Gaylord Herald Times. He received his bachelor’s degree in history from Saginaw Valley state University. He served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and Great Lakes freighters; but most of all his granddaughters were his pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Preston Jr. and Margaret Odette.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Jeanne (Bugenske) Odette; three children, Kevin T. Odette, Stephanie M. (Michael) Epps, and Brian H. Odette; two granddaughters, Emily and Madeline Epps; brother, Gregory Odette.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 16, at St. Gerard Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. John Klein presiding. Interment and Military honors were at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Eric E. Olger

Eric E. Olger, age 42, of Potterville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 26, 2009. He was born July 5, 1966 in Lansing to George and Delores (Wilburn) Olger. Eric was employed with the Ingham County Road Commission and was also a former employee at E.T. MacKenzie Trucking for over 12 years.

He loved sports, Eric was a NASCAR fan, and enjoyed following the Redwings, MSU football, Detroit Lions, Tigers and the Pistons. He loved going boating in the summertime.

Eric is survived by the love of his life, Rebecca “Bobby” Olger; two precious daughters, Katrina “Trina-butt” Olger and Emmalee “Emma-banito” Morelock; Godson, Nathan “Nater-tater” Fears; brothers, Glenn (Jeannie) Olger, Daniel (Lisa) Olger, George (Teena) Olger; sister, Dawn (Alex) Smith; brother-in-law, Ron Bailor; mother-in-law, Diane Willis; sisters-in-law, Vickie (Bill) Fears, Sandy Willis; many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Decker. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Gloria Bailor.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church with Pastor Kathy Smith officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Memorial contributions can be made to Eaton community Hospice.

Rex Olmstead

Rex Edward Olmstead, 82, of Bellevue died Dec. 12, 2009 at home. He was born April 13, 1927, the son of Rex and Louise (Brandt) Olmstead in Battle Creek.

Rex graduated from Bellevue High School, entered the U.S. Navy and served during WWII. When he returned, he went to work at Post Cereals until retiring in 1984.

Rex was a past president of the Post 25 Year Club, past president of the Battle Creek Shrine Club and former director of the Mini-T Patrol. He was also past Worshipful Master of the Bellevue Masonic Lodge. He had been very active in the Saladin Temple in Grand Rapids holding offices of Class Director, First Ceremonial Master, President of the Unit Council, and served on the Executive, Holding and Finance Committees.

For years Rex built and restored cars and race cars. He raced for several years in New York, Canada and Sandusky, Ohio and was nominated for Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame. Rex built two street rods in later years. He enjoyed helping his sons and grandsons with their card and tractors – he loved anything mechanical. In addition, he was also interested in antiques and collectibles and going to garage sales.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Rex is survived by his wife, Ardeth (Page) Olmstead of Bellevue; sons, Michael (Nancy) Olmstead of Bellevue, Randy (Becky) Olmstead and Tim (Karen) Olmstead, all of Battle Creek; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Graveside services took place Thursday, Dec. 17,2 009 at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue with Pastor Steve Olmstead, Pleasantview Family Church, officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Patricia Olmsted-Hunt

Patricia Anne (Peacock) Olmsted-Hunt, 73, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at a Lansing hospital. She was born June 10, 1935 in Ionia, the daughter of Albert E. and Clara L. (Grinnell) Peacock.

Pat worked in the healthcare field as a care giver for many years. She enjoyed planting and raising flowers.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Donald “Bud” Hunt and close friend, Edith Gates.

Surviving are two sons, Gerald L. Johnson of Olivet and Kenneth D. (Cathy) Johnson of Grandville; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one sister and three brothers; several nieces and nephews; and boyfriend, Robert Brandon of Charlotte.

Memorial services were scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.

Lawrence Osborn

Lawrence Vern Osborn, 67, of Charlotte, died Thursday, October 22, 2009 surrounded by his family. Larry was born December 13, 1941 in Windsor Township, the son of Roy and Myrtle (Swan) Osborn. He worked as a mechanic for Fowlers Chevrolet and then went to work for Oldsmobile where he finished his career in the Experimental Garage as a supervisor. He was a member of the Charlotte Eagles #3552 and Moose Lodge #1933. He loved spending time with his family and friends and helping with the many activities sponsored by the Eagles.

He is survived by his wife Donis (Wells), sons, Rocky Osborn of Lansing; Rob Osborn of Charlotte; Randy Vaughn of Lansing; daughter, Brenda (Tim) Jones of Gowen; Shellie (Ron) Budd of Charlotte; Shannon (John) Freeman of Olivet; sisters, Pat Mishler of Charlotte; Beth (Roger) Page of Olivet; brothers, Lee (Joyce) Osborn of Dimondale; Tom (Dee) Osborn of Charlotte; grandchildren, Hunter Osborn of Holt; Rayce and Garrett Osborn of Perry; Corey Osborn and Alexa Zimmerman of Charlotte; Eric Vaughn of Lansing; Paige and Chad Jones of Gowen; Ronnie Budd of Lansing; Casey Emenhiser of Charlotte; Cayla Budd of Aurora, Ill.; Ashley Kirchmeier of Olivet; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held Monday, October 26, 2009 at Pray Funeral Home with Todd Page, nephew officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Charlotte.

Beatrice Ottinger

Beatrice Ottinger of Eaton Rapids, MI on November 26, 2009, Bea fell asleep only to awake and see her son, Glenn; daughter-in-law, Janet; and grandchildren, Aaron and Chad; who preceded her in death, at the age of 81. She was born in Tigrett, TN on March 3, 1928, the daughter of Connie and Emma (Gilland) French. Bea formerly worked as a housekeeper for Michigan State University. She enjoyed gardening, family cookouts and playing with her pet dog Regal.

She loved spending time with her husband, Willis of 65 years; her 2 children, Gail (Harry) Mallory and Terry (Paulette) Ottinger; eight grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, which she fondly referred to as grandbabies.

Funeral services were held Monday, November 30, 2009 from the Chapel In The Pines Funeral Home at 101 W. Jolly Rd. Lansing, MI 48910. Burial followed in the East Lawn Memory Gardens in Okemos. Elsie Owen

Elsie Owen, 99, of Lansing, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009. Mrs. Owen was born April 24, 1910 in Rock falls, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Bessie (Crouch) Dobson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1993 an infant daughter, Alice; a son-in-law, Dewey Decker and six grandchildren.

She is survived by four children, Frank (Eileen) Owen of Tenn.; Doris (Gordon) Matrau of Elsie; Ward “Russ” (Mary) Owen of Lansing; and Rita Decker of Lansing; 14 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 27 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 11, 2009 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Courtney Suntkin officiating. Interment was at Eastlawn Memorial cemetery, Okemos.

Mary Owens

Mrs. Mary (LeVan) Owens of Grass Valley, Calif., passed away Dec. 2,2 009 after a three-month illness. She was born August 15, 1927 in Mulliken, Mich., the daughter of deceased parents, Oscar and Olive LeVan.

She is survived by six children; Sharon, Dennis, Deborah, Mary Lynne, Michael and Patricia; husband, Paul; sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Southworth of Mulliken and Mrs. Martha Szudzik of Kentwood and several grandchildren.
