Richard Day

Richard Day, 79, of Bellevue, died April 19, 2008 at Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte. He was born Feb. 6, 1929, the son of Francis J. and Kathyrn E. (Rose) Day in Rome, NY.

Richard served ion the U.S. Air Force as a cook and parachute rigger. When he returned from the service he drove taxicabs in NY and Jackson, MI and then worked for Owens Corning in Albion. Richard was a member of the American Legion Post #280 in Bellevue and enjoyed reading and 3working with horses.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Day; his parents and three brothers.

Richard married Helen Johanna Kiefer on Aug. 31, 1955. She survives. Also surviving are their children, Patricia Day of Bellevue, Michael (Tammie) Day of Bellevue, Thomas Day of Jackson and Helen Jones of Bellevue; eight grandchildren; sisters, Gale (Patrick) O’Rourke of Painesville, OH and Shirley Bajgerowicz of NY and nieces, Annmarie Kiefer of Bellevue.

Services with military honors will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Fort Custer Cemetery, Augusta.

Albert Deal

A loving, patient, and generous man, Albert Louis Deal, 93, of Spring Lake passed from this life to Life Eternal on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at North Ottawa Community Hospital in Grand Haven. Al was born Oct. 27, 1914 in LaGrange County, IN to Fred Gage and Carlie Parthena (Grubb) Deal.

Following graduation from Kalamazoo College with a bachelor's degree in history he went on to earn his master's degree in educational administration from the University of Michigan. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Naval Armed Guard in WW II, during which he saw duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific war operations.

Al's distinguished career in Michigan public education spanned 40 years and he served with four Michigan public school districts as superintendent. He was also active with the Michigan Association of School Administrators. For 20 years he was commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and had served as member, vice president and president of the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association. In 1987 he was presented an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Olivet College and the following year was inducted into the Michigan Education Hall of Fame. In 1995 Al was voted into Kalamazoo College's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Al was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Life member of R.C. Hathaway Lodge #387 F.S.A.M. of Caledonia, Life member of B.P.O.E. #1381 of Sturgis, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Grand Rapids, American Legion Post #28 in Grand Haven and Michigan Sport Sages.

Al is survived by his wife, Connie who described her life with Al as "Christmas every day;" three daughters, Ann M. VandenBerg, Emily J. Dood and Martha E. Butler; four stepsons, Richmond H. (Cindy) Jones, Douglas H. Jones, Dr. Donald H. (Maryvic Cuison) Jones, all of Spring Lake, and Craig H. (Lisa) Jones of Vero Beach, FL; and several loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Grand Haven with Rev. John Hills officiating. Military Honors were provided by the American Legion Post #28. Memorials to St. John's Episcopal Church are appreciated.

R. Conrad DeBaun

R. Conrad DeBaun, 77, of Springfield, formerly of Olivet, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. Conrad was born June 7, 1930 in Garrett, IN the son of Raymond and Helen (Brown) DeBaun.

He was a 1949 Graduate of Olivet High School and had served as a Military Policeman in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Before entering the service he was employed in the family owned DeBaun Farm Dairy. Later was employed as a Tool & Die Maker at Air-Way Mfg. Co. and the Olivet Machine Tool Engineering Co. from where he retired. He had been a member of the Springfield American Legion Post, was a charter member of the Olivet Tuesday Night Golf League, the Charlotteers Camping Club and had enjoyed going to Deer Camp for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Amber June DeBaun in 1964; and his wife, Maxine DeBaun in 1991.

Surviving are his companion of 16 years, Lynda Wight; twin sister, Jackie (Cecil) Marr of Lansing; brother, Richard (Ilene) DeBaun of Bellevue; three stepchildren, Todd (Diane) Phillips of Sun Prairie, WI, Kent (Kim) Phillips of Albion and Wendy (Ron) Boersma of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 11, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Jack Brown officiating. Interment in the Lee Center Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lifespan Hospice of Battle Creek. Envelopes available at the Funeral Home.

Robert Deitrick

Robert J. Deitrick, Jr., 67, of Charlotte, died Monday, April 21, 2008 at the Mother Teresa House in Lansing. He was born December 30, 1940 in Highland Park Michigan, the son of Robert J. and Olive G. (Vincent) Deitrick and had been a practicing Attorney for over 40 years in Eaton County and the State of Michigan.

Surviving are his wife, Joy (Quick) Deitrick; his daughter, Alyson (Jeff) Wendt of Williamston; step sons, Chris (Angie) Musser of Vermontville, Derek Musser of Lansing and Kyle Musser of East Lansing and 5 grandchildren, Jack and Rory Wendt and Alex, Carsen and Noah Musser.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Judge Thomas Eveland officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville. Memorial contributions may go to the Mother Teresa House, P.O. Box 13004, Lansing, MI 48901.

EvaBelle Deer Deppa

EvaBelle Deer Deppa, 94 years young, of Grand Ledge, passed away Jan. 19 at the Eaton Community Hospice.

She was born Oct. 27, 1913 to William and Edith (Mavety) Boyd in Mancelona. She married Otto L. Deer Sept. 6, 1936. He preceded her in death on July 20, 1971.

EvaBelle, a loving, caring mother and family matriarch, was a homemaker, farmer, county school bus driver, Mighty Minnies 4-H Club co-founder and a 4-H leader.

She had a mischievous Irish twinkle in her eyes, a zest for life and the ability to make friends wherever she went. She was an active member of the Oneida Gospel Church, involved in numerous community endeavors, and was honored to be Eaton County Homemaker of the Year in 1979.

She was preceded in death by Darlene Deer, infant daughter; sister, Cora May Drent and brother, Albert Boyd.

Surviving are children Donna (Larry) Segerlind of Okemos, Deanna (Lloyd) Knapp of Craigmont, Idaho, Gerald (Joan) Deer of Cadillac, Richard (Terralene) Deer of Charlotte and Susan Deer (Jon, deceased) Hall of Ann Arbor.

On Feb. 5, 1983 EvaBelle married Woodrow A. "Doc" Deppa of Grand Ledge. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1999, but his five children survive: Jim (Judy) Eddy of Grandville, Joan Deppa of Syracuse, N.Y., Jerold (Nancy Gustavson) Deppa of Sitka, Alaska, Janey (Bob) Schultz of Humbel, Texas and Julie (Tom) Hosley of Johnstown, Ohio; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren, and who knows how many other "adopted" family members.

Funeral services were held Jan. 23 at the Oneida Gospel Church, Grand Ledge with Pastor Larry Schrauger officiating. Interment followed at Union Cemetery, Oneida Township. Arrangement were handled by the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.

Contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice or the Oneida Gospel Church.

Helen DeWaters

Helen L. DeWaters, 78, of Parma, passed away Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at Faith Haven Senior Care Centre in Jackson. She was born June 7, 1930 in Lansing to Charles and Mable (Hopkins) McMann. On Jan. 11, 1955 she married Leslie C. DeWaters, who preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 2006.

Helen was a homemaker and was involved in several kinds of volunteer work. As the wife of a veteran, she enjoyed selling poppies for the American Legion. She also enjoyed bowling. Helen especially cared for her beloved little dog, Taco Maria.

Her survivors include two daughters, Bonnie J. Grubaugh of Parma and Rosemary Marie Smith of Calif.; three sisters, Ella Bateman, Barbara Jean and Merlene, all of Mich.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Laura B. DeWaters and Dorothy Pierce; two brothers, Alvin and Norman McMann; and her son-in-law, Duane Grubaugh.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the family to help with expenses.

Virgil Dickerson

Virgil Dickerson, 70, of Charlotte, died Saturday, June 7, 2008. Mr. Dickerson was born Aug. 11, 1937.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Dickerson in 2006.

Graveside services were held Friday, June 13, 2008 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte with Pastor Samuel Graham officiating.

Richard Dilly

Richard O. Dilly, 68, of Charlotte, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. Richard was born Feb. 16, 1940 in Cairo, W.VA the son of Bernard and Bess Ann (Richards) Dilly and had been a Charlotte resident since 1966.

He received Jesus Christ as his savior in 1965 and faithfully served his Lord until his death. He was a 1959 graduate of Parkersburg, W. VA High School and had served three years in the U. S. Army Reserve. He had been employed as a mold maker for Owens-Illinois Glass, Charlotte retiring in 2002 after 36 years of service. He was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte where he was a member of the men's Bible study and had served as head usher and was involved in many other ministries in the church. He volunteered for the church services held for residents of the Eaton County Medical Care Facility.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Christopher Dilly in 1962.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Deanna (Mills) Dilly; three children, Richard Troy (Heather) Dilly of Lowell, MI, Bernard Darren Dilly of Amble, MI and Anna Floreine Bashore of Ovid, MI; eight grandchildren, Richard Keaton Dilly, Stephen Cameron Dilly, Karis Dilly, Ellen Dilly, Danielle Gyger, Haiden Bashore, Owen Bashore and Max Bashore; two brothers, Bernard Dean (Eleanor) Dilly of Mineral Wells, W.VA and Duane (Wanda) Dilly of Orlando, FL.

Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 825 N. Cochran Ave., Charlotte with Pastor Mark Booth officiating. Interment was in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Dimondale.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Calvary Baptist Church.
