Natalie Freiburger

Natalie Christine Freiburger, 11, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 after a two and half month courageous and faithful battle against cancer.

Natalie was born June 6, 1996 in Grand Rapids, MN, the daughter of Chris and Kimberly (Smith) Freiburger.

Natalie enjoyed playing soccer, basketball, writing storybooks, playing with friends, camping, fishing and hunting with daddy.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Elaine Freiburger and seven great-grandparents.

She is survived by her parents, Chris and Kim; sister, Samantha; brother, Noah; grandparents, Larry and Diane Smith and Edward Freiburger; great-grandparent, Laura Smith and nine cousins, three aunts, and one uncle and many friends.

Funeral services were held Jan. 10, 2008 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School or DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Alfred Fuhrman

Alfred "Sonny" Fuhrman, Jr., 74, of Charlotte, died Thursday July 24, 2008. Mr. Fuhrman was born July 25, 1933 in Three Rivers, MI, the son of Alfred and Donna (Brown) Fuhrman, Sr.

Mr. Fuhrman was a member of the American Legion Post 42 and the Eagles FOE #3552. Sonny was a huge sports enthusiast, which included U of M football, Detroit Tiger baseball, NASCAR and horse racing. He also enjoyed dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his son, Alan Habitz of Traverse City; daughter, Lori Fuhrman of Lansing; son, Jeff (Mary) Fuhrman of Lansing; daughter, Diane Pfeifer of Bath; six grandchildren; sisters, Carol Wiltse and Joyce (Lambert) Henry; brothers, Alan and Keith Fuhrman and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held July 28 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Hewlett officiating. Interment was at Pinckney Cemetery July 29.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Cal Fullerton

Cal Fullerton, age 83 died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at his residence after an extended illness. Cal was born January 22, 1925 in Lansing, the son of Donald R. and Hilda O. (Wilson) Fullerton and had been a Charlotte resident for 80 years.
He was a 1942 Graduate of Charlotte High School and had served in the Army Air Corps during World War Two. He had owned and operated Cal's Western Store, Cal's Mobil and the Fowler Farm Store. He was a 50 year member of the Charlotte Fire Department, joining in September 1946, served as Chief from May 2, 1956 to August 1, 1988 and retired from the Department April 1, 1996. He had been a member of the Charlotte Jaycees having received their Outstanding Young Man of the Year Award, was a former Charlotte City Councilman, was a member of the Charlotte Lodge #120 F.& A.M. and had served on many Fire Organizations locally and statewide. He is survived by: his wife of 65 years, Doris (Wehr) Fullerton; 3 sons, Robert (Jeannette) Fullerton of Charlotte, Gordon (Tich) Fullerton of Charlotte Hall, MD and Kevin (Nancy) Fullerton of Charlotte; 7 grandchildren, Bobbi Jo, Josh, Jon, Danielle, Kimberly, Sonny and Tyger; 1 great-grandchild, Ashley; 2 sisters, Jane Mikesell of Lansing and Beverly Boomsma of Illinois; and Brother, Richard Fullerton of Florida. He was preceded in death by brothers, Kay, David and Donald Fullerton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with the Rev. Philip Hobson and the Charlotte Fire Department officiating. Interment in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in Cal's memory may go to the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes available at the funeral home.

Dan Gaffney

Dan Joseph Gaffney, 64, of Lansing, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008. Mr. Gaffney was born Feb. 1, 1944 in Lansing, the son of Edward and Lorraine (Denczek) Gaffney.

Dan worked in quality control for General Motors for 40 years before his retirement and retired from the National Guard after 24 years of service. His passion for history translated into hobbies restoring and collecting antique radios and automobiles. Dan was most proud of his family and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Betty (Hamilton) Gaffney; daughter, Holly Gaffney of Royal Oak; son, Christopher (Heather) Gaffney of Holland; and sister, Beverly Gaffney of Lansing.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.

Dori Gallie

Dori Sue Gallie, 44, of Lansing, formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008 after a courageous 27 years battle with cancer and heart disease. Dori Sue was born February 14, 1964 in Lansing, the daughter of Thomas and Sue (Gordon) Gallie.

Dori was formerly employed with the Michigan Department of Treasury and Holiday Inn West in Lansing.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Nicol and Cele Gordon, and Irene Gallie.

Dori is survived by her parents, Tom and Sue Gallie of Lansing; grandfather, Donald Gallie of Ludington; brother, Kenneth (Theresa “Tarrah”) Gallie of Grand Ledge; sister, Cheryl (LeRoy) Pickard of Eaton Rapids; three nephews, Blayke and Logan Gallie, and Tyler Pickard; one niece, Alexis Gallie; aunts and uncles, Nicol and Patricia Gordon of Commerce Twp., Jack and Arlene Gallie of Ind., Linda Lipham of Fla.; and many cousins.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Gift of Life or Relay For Life in memory of Dori Sue Gallie.

Sammy Garcia

Sammy R. Garcia, 64, of Eaton Rapids died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at his home. He was born October 19, 1943 in Brownfield, Texas, son of Samuel and Rufina (Rendon) Garcia.

Sammy was the State Director for the Telemon Corporation in Lansing, retiring in 2005. He had worked 35 years with the Head Start Program and with Migrant Programs throughout the state. Sammy was also a musician for many years and played with the band of “Outsiders.”

Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Marilyn; three children, David Garcia of Holland, Mandy (Cruz) Beltran of Holland and Michelle (Max) Gingles of Colo.; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brother, Gilbert Garcia of Holland and sister, Veronica (Rick) Garcia of Holland and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley Garfield

Shirley (June) Garfield, of Duck Lake, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2008 at the age of 91 at Oaklawn Hospital, while recuperating from a recent surgery. June was born at the family farm outside of Albion, MI on Sept. 20, 1916, the daughter of William Boyd Creps and Kate (Mann) Creps.

June graduated from Albion High School at the age of 16, during the Great Depression. She felt fortunate to obtain a position as clerk at Albion Malleable Iron Company soon after graduation.

June and her husband David A. (Bunk) Garfield were married in Albion, MI on Sept. 14, 1937. June became a homemaker, caring for their three daughters as well as David's father, with whom they lived.

In 1950, June and Bunk moved the family to a home on the north end of Duck Lake, where they owned and operated Silver Beach Resort for many years. Vacations and leisure time, brief but well enjoyed, were trips to Chicago by train and season tickets to Detroit Lions football games.

Upon the sale of their business in 1978, June was able to explore interests in painting, bridge, writing, genealogy and local history. She served on the Clarence Township Historical Society, co-authored The History of Clarence Township and wrote her personal memoirs. June and her family were instrumental in renovating the family-owned 1883 Duck Lake Schoolhouse, now a recognized Michigan Historical Site. She took pride in the fact that Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI features a building belonging to country doctor Alonzo Howard, her great grandfather.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, David (Bunk) Garfield; sister, Agnes Heath and brother, Howard Creps.

June is survived by three daughters, Catherine Cole (Zane) of Valparaiso, IN, Sarah Cool (Ken) of Duck Lake, MI and Mary Mahler (Ron) of Albion, MI; and eight loving grandchildren, Susan Hall, Anne Decker, Mike Cool, Julie Golding, Amy Welch, Jennifer Davlin, Steve Davis and James Davis. The joy of June's life was her "Greats," the 14 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Colin, Tommy, Julia, Jeff, Jill, Katie, Allie, Sarah, Anna, Ellie, Gabriella, Jacob and Emily.

There will be a private service and burial.

Contributions in June's memory to the following charities are suggested in lieu of flowers: Special Olympics Michigan Area 24 (Bud Dodson, Director, 106 High Street, Scottsville, MI 49454) or S.A.F.E. (Springport Area Foundation for Education) Box 83, Springport, MI 49284.

Bobby Garland

Bobby H. Garland III, 18, of Charlotte, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2008 in Charlotte. Bobby was born April 5, 1989 in Lansing.

He was a graduate of Charlotte High School, Class of 2007, and a member of the Herpetology Society of Michigan. Bobby enjoyed camping, animals, horseshoes, hunting, fishing, cards and pool.

Preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard Doxtader, he is survived by his wife, DeLaura (Vinson) Garland of Charlotte; daughter, DeLura Garland; parents, Robert Jr. and Roxana Garland of Charlotte; sister, Kirsten Garland; parents-in-law, Jerry and Janice Vinson, all of Charlotte; grandparents, Marcia Steadman of Leslie, Susan Garland of Charlotte, Robert H. (Deborah) Garland, Sr. of Charlotte, Joan Cross of Leslie; grandmother-in-law, Alice Rohdy of Charlotte; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 11, 2008 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids.

Shawn Michael Garnett

Shawn Michael Garnett age 27, of Eaton Rapids passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008 in Eaton Rapids. Shawn was born January 8, 1981 in Warwick, New York. He was a residential roofer and employed with Lighthouse Exteriors of Eaton Rapids. Shawn was a great musician, enjoyed his guitar, and was very artistic, creating many drawing and sketches. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jean in 1995.

He is survived by his father. Jeffrey W. Garnett, Sr. of Eaton Rapids; grandmother, Dorothy Staff of Monroe, NY; 4 siblings, Jeffrey W. (Tammy) Garnett and Michael Garnett, both of Monroe, NY, Kris Garnett of Lansing, and Kelly Garnett of Eaton Rapids; nieces & nephews, Krystal & Jeffrey Garnett III, Serena Garnett, Aaron & Andrew Garnett; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Freda Garrett

Freda L. Garrett, of Vermontville, died Thursday, March 13, 2008. She was born Dec. 21, 1925, the daughter of Frank and Ruth Smith, of Ashley. She enjoyed waitressing at Bob Evans in Lansing, Howard Johnson and Coons Restaurant. She also enjoyed watching her daily “soaps.”

Freda is survived by her brother, Ronald Smith of Vermontville; nieces, Rhonda (Steven) Pifer and Jennifer (Jason) Wells, all of Vermontville.

She was preceded in death by both parents and brothers, Murl Smith and Raymond Smith, both of Ashley.

There will be no funeral services. A luncheon in her honor will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to her family.
