Hazel Midlam

Hazel Mae (Cushman) Midlam, 89, of rural Olivet, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at her home, surrounded by her children. Mrs. Midlam was born March 31, 1919, in Marengo Township to Earl George and Carrie Lavina (Sturgis) Cushman.

She attended Kibler School. She and Earl R. Midlam romantically eloped on Valentine's Day, 1941, in Bryan, Ohio. He preceded her in death on October 9, 1999.

During her early life, Mrs. Midlam assisted in the Marshall homes of Lou Brooks, Paul Noneman, Robert Maise and the Seaman families. Later, as a farmer's wife, she partnered with her husband on the farm that she lived on for 67 years. It was there that she and her husband raised their eight children. Her early, hard-working farm life included hand-tying bales on a Case baler, cooking and boarding the hired help, and each year raising 100's of baby chicks. She used the produce from her large gardens for her family.

Mrs. Midlam was a past member of the Faith Assembly of God Church for over 40 years and was presently a member of the Olivet First Assembly of God Church. She was active in the Women's Ministry Group, nursing home visitation, taught Sunday School, belonged to the Striped School Clatter Club and 4-H Club, and loved passionate, lively music - including playing the Hawaiian guitar and buying a bongo drum in her late 80's. People continually appreciated her latest "artsy" home decorating project. Her ability to "make something out of nothing" began with turning a "black 1850's house" into her Victorian home, taking care of her flower gardens, and openly welcoming frequent guests.

People admired her never-ceasing ability to see and cheer on the positive in others, her gift of encouragement, and her talent to inspire. She was a mentor and a counselor. She loved to be joyful and constantly produced joy in others.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, and all seven siblings, Marie Reed, Vila VanArman, Isabelle Olson, Seth Cushman, Daisy Smith, Donna Sundberg, and Donald Cushman.

Her family includes eight children, the late Brenda (Alan) Young of Olivet, Richard (Mary) Midlam of Olivet, Ken (Linda) Midlam of Rogers, AR, Dale Midlam of Olivet, Shelia (Tim) McConnel of Sioux Center, IA, Marcia Midlam of Indiana, Melvin Midlam of Olivet, Lisa Midlam of Vancouver, WA; Linda Young of Olivet; former daughter-in-laws, Trina Walton of TX, Becky Midlam of AR; 17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Hazel's family and friends will miss her words of encouragement, her total acceptance of each person, her contagious free spirit, her genuine hospitality, and her ability for unconditional love. She was an oasis of love to all who knew her.

A celebration service of her life and a time of sharing was held Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at the First Assembly of God Church, 4767 W. Butterfield Hwy., Olivet (not to be confused with Olivet Faith Assembly). Interment followed at Rice Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to the Youth Group of Olivet First Assembly Church. Mrs. Midlam has been a life-long, passionate supporter of youth. Assistance with memorials is available at the Kempf Funeral Home. Leave a personal message for the family and sign the online guestbook at www.kempffuneralhome.com.
