Norbert Weller

Norbert 'Bud' Leroy Weller, of Lake Odessa, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, July 27, 2008. Bud was born Sept. 24, 1932 in Wayne Co., MI, the son of Serl and Ethel (Hall) Weller.

He was a man who loved God, life, people and his family. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing. After finding out his cancer was terminal his comment was I will finish my walk with the Lord and then I will go home. Bud served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean war. He was a member of the Sebewa Church of God, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and he was also on the pastors council, he sang in the choir and was a loyal member. He was employed at Tom Carter Motor sales in Ionia as a service tech for 35 years. He worked at Hafner floral as a delivery man for 10 years. Currently he was employed at Twin City foods in Lake Odessa, MI where he had many friends.

He touched a lot of peoples lives, with his happy go lucky attitude, and his faith in God. He will be sadly missed. Go rest high on a mountain, Bud, your work on earth is done. We Love You.

Bud was preceded in death by both his mother and father; his loving wife of 43 years, Marilyn Weller; brothers, George Weller, Alvin Weller; and sister, Ethel Weller.

Surviving are his children, Peter (Rebecca) Weller, Paul (Darlene) Weller, Darrell (Sarah) Weller; grandchildren, Sara (Jeff) Jameson and their children, Adron and Jeffrey, Joshua (Teresa) Weller and their son Ethan, Simon (Nicole) Weller and their children, Naomi and Ashton, Bobbi (Terry) Platte and their children, Gabe, Gavin and Gwen, Charlie (Angie) Schafer and their children, Hannah and Braden, Jason Weller and Erin, Jacob Weller, Tim Weller, Angelica Weller, his loving wife, Susan Weller, her children, Steve (Mary) Judkins, Deanna (Randy) Coffman, James (Dawn) Judkins, Sue's grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Wesley (Rita) Weller, Harold (Gracie) Weller; sisters, Jean Schodowski, Shirley (Walter) Rehkemper, Nancy (Richard) Bennett, Frances Britton, Carol Eckley, Bonnie (Bob) Swain; brother-in-law, Tomas Pitchford; lots of nieces and nephews; and his church family and many, many friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 31, 2008 at the Sebewa Church of God with Pastor Jerry Polk officiating.

Burleigh Wellman

Burleigh D. Wellman, 84, of Charlotte, passed away Aug. 14, 2008. He was born, in Muskegon on Feb. 15, 1924 to Helen and Grover Wellman.

He married Virginia Nisse (Class of '43) in Macon, Ga. on Oct. 24, 1943. They have three sons, Burleigh Jr., Michael and Mark, all graduates of Charlotte High School; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He received an honorable discharge with the Ninth Air Force, 63 Fighter Wing from 1942-1945, serving in the European Theater of Operation in World War II (T/Sgt.), and attended Michigan State College in 1946 and 1947.

His union activities included being the president of Local #724-UAW (Lansing) for four years, president of Local #724-UAW-Federal Credit Union for 12 years, a trustee with Lansing Community Credit Union for eight years (retired in 1991), served on the executive board at Michigan State AFL-CIO for four years, chairman at Greater Lansing Community Services Committee for seven years, and member of Lansing United Fund -Budget Panels-Red Cross/family services/alcoholism for two years.

He was the author of "Burley's Corner" in Lansing Labor News for 14 years, appointed (one of 27) local UAW presidents to a 21-day study tour of European unions (England, France, Germany, Sweden), and helped write a union booklet, "Journey to Understanding," (1962). He was chairman of the Lansing Forge Bargaining Committee for 17 years and served 19 years on the Shop Pension Committee, retiring in 1985 after 32 years.

He was a life member of Charlotte VFW Post #2406, the American Legion Post #42 (47 years, commander from 1991-1992 and 1992-1993), Eaton County 40 & 8 - Past Chef de Gare (commander, 1958), charter member of the National Past Chef de Gare Club, loyal Order of Moose (Lodge 2268 in Clare), charter member of the Charlotte Optimist Club (known as "Burley the Nut Man"), served two terms as president and gained honor president (1980-1981), and served one term as Lieutenant Governor for Zone 7-MI, Charlotte Eagles #3552 for 26 years, four terms as president (fifth year/secretary), and he graduated Feb. 28, 1992 from Missouri Auction School.

He also played and coached a semi-pro football team for 10 years called Burley's All-Stars, and played, coached and umpired local softball for 37 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Grover Wellman; his wife of 63 years Virginia L. Wellman and one brother, John Wellman.

Services were held at Charlotte Eagles 3552 on Aug. 17 with Chuck Jensen officiating. Arrangements by Swanson Funeral Home of Flint.

Leslie Fern Wells

Leslie Fern Wells, 89, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 surrounded by family and friends. Les was born Sept. 15, 1919 in Brookfield Township, the son of Homer and Pearle (Leslie) Wells.

He was a Fireman First Class in the U.S. Navy serving in W.W.II. He was also a member of the Charlotte Eagles #3552 and Moose Lodge #1933.

After serving his country he worked at Reo in Lansing. He then operated his own can milk truck delivering to Pet Milk Company in Charlotte, then purchased a bulk milk truck delivering for Michigan Milk Producers Assoc. to Ovid and Detroit. After that, he hauled cars for Howard Sobers of Lansing and Fleet Carriers of Flint, and delivered agricultural lime to many farmers in the tri-county area.

After his retirement, he worked for Davis Pontiac of Charlotte. He loved spending time with his family and friends and helping others in need.

He is survived by his daughters, Karen (Richard) Watson of Penn., Donis (Larry) Osborn of Charlotte; son Gary (Kathy) Wells of Kentwood; grandchildren, Randy Vaughn of Lansing, Shellie (Ron) Budd of Charlotte, Sara Bostwick of Pennsylvania, Amy (Kelly) Carr of Fla., Rachel (Joel) Heagle of Byron Center, Aaron (Diana) Wells and Andy Wells both of Grand Rapids, Rocky Osborn of Jackson, Rob Osborn of Charlotte, Branda (Tim) Jones of Gowen, Shannon (John) Freeman of Olivet; sisters, Shirley Hines of Charlotte, Zella Sundberg and brother-in-law Alfred Saunby, both of Marshall; brother-in-law, George Riddle and sister-in-law; Wanda Wells both of Charlotte; special friend; Dorothy Fuller of Nashville; great-grandchildren, Casey Emenhiser, Ronnie and Cayla Budd of Charlotte, Eric Vaughn of Lansing, Justin, Ben, Alexis Heagle of Byron Center, Brennan, Ainsley, Riley Wells of Grand Rapids; Anna and Tom Bostwick of Penn., Emily and Ben Carr of Fla., Paige and Chad Jones of Gowen, Ashley Kirchmeier of Olivet, Corey Osborn and Alexa Zimmerman of Charlotte, Hunter Osborn of Holt, Rayce and Garrett Osborn of Perry; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Jenson officiating. Interment followed at Bosworth Cemetery, Charlotte.

Mary Wendorf

Mary Wendorf, 70, of Charlotte, died, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008. Mrs. Wendorf was born Nov. 16, 1936 in Moscow, MI, the daughter of Ellis and Esther (Miller) Brazee.

Mrs. Wendorf worked at the Vermontville Hardware Store and was a member of Gresham United Methodist Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking and talking to friends on the phone. Mrs. Wendorf loved spending time with her family especially at family get togethers.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dale; sons, Steven (Sherry) Wendorf of Charlotte, David (Brenda) Wendorf of Vermontville, Gregory (Chris) Wendorf of Nashville and Harold (Dawn) Wendorf of Charlotte; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jerry (Evelyn) Brazee and Harold (Rosalie) Brazee; sister, Donna (Larry) Bowser; stepbrothers, Jim Wood and Norm Wood and stepsister, Judy Wood.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Jensen and Rev. Bryce Feighner officiating. Interment will be at Gresham Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Maple Valley Memorial Scholarship Fund, Visiting Nurses Hospice or Kalamo United Methodist Church.

Victor Joseph Wernette

Victor Joseph Wernette, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in Eaton Rapids. Victor was born February 7, 1920 in Remus, MI.

Surviving are his children, Myron (Delores) Wernette of Hudsonville, Gail (Janice) Wernette of Elmhurst, IL, Karen (David Cushman) Wernette of Lake Zurich, IL, and Alan (Julie) Wernette of Norton Shores, MI; 10 grandchildren; and special friend, Jackie Daniels.

Victor retired from Standard Oil Company. He was active in Eaton Rapids Rotary and Elks Clubs, and very involved in church activities. The Eaton Rapids Medical Center has been a big part of his life.

Arrangements are by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the University United Methodist Church, 1120 S. Harrison, East Lansing. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the University United Methodist Church, East Lansing or to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center in memory of Victory Wernette..

Floral Wheeler

Floral June Wheeler, 78, of Lansing, died Aug. 9, 2008. Mrs. Wheeler was born Feb. 27, 1930, the daughter of Lennie and Gladys Bergman.

She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Wheeler; sisters, Clarice Bergman and Bethel Bergman; and brother, Robert Bergman.

She is survived by sons, Stephen (Jolene) Wheeler of Lansing, and Colin Thomas Wheeler of Greenville; nieces and nephews, and sister, Grace (Elmer) Aseltine.

Graveside services were held Monday, Aug. 11, 2008 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Waverly Road Church of the Nazarene, Lansing.

Marguerite Whitaker

Marguerite E. Whitaker, 99, of Charlotte, formerly of Boynton Beach, FL, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008. Mrs. Whitaker was born March 20, 1909 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of John and Marguerite (Casper) Weiss.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Yvonne) Olson; stepson, Fred Whitaker; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 at St. John's Episcopal Church with Reverend Dr. Carol Spangenburg officiating.

Esther “Dolly” Wildern

Esther Regina “Dolly” Wildern, 81, of Charlotte, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008. She was born June 28, 1926 in Hazel Park, Mich., the daughter of Florenz and Margaret (Sutinen) Burger. Dolly was a devoted mother of three boys and a loving grandmother of eight grandchildren. Her family was the focal point of her life. She shared the whole family’s passion for snow skiing and instilled that passion in all eight grandchildren. Her strive for excellence was her commitment both in the home and in the workplace.

Dolly’s commitment to her profession and the community was evident. She graduated from Ferris Tate University in 1948, with a pharmacy degree after which she moved to Charlotte and became the head pharmacist at Hayes Green Beach Hosptial for 38 years. After retiring, she continued working as a pharmacist at Wildern’s Drug Store. Throughout her pharmacy career she was a member of the Michigan pharmaceutical Society. She was involved with Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Cub Scout Pack 46, her Bridge Club and the GFWC of Charlotte.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, George; three sons, Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Wildern, Steve (Toni) Wildern and Kent (Coni) Wildern; grandsons, Harper (Amanda) Wildern, Joseph (Wendy) Wildern, Jonathan Wildern (fiancé Larah Kasza), Christopher Wildern, Chad (Kara) Wildern and Kyle (Loni) Wildern; granddaughters, Danielle (Nick) Juhle and Kristen Wildern; great granddaughters, Marilyn Wildern and Andie Wildern; brothers, Bob (JoAnne) Gronlund and Don Molinaro.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008 at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist church with Reverend Karen Wheat officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital or Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.
