Robert C. Smith, Sr.

Robert C. Smith Sr., died March 7, 2007. He was born in 1932 and was a Korean War veteran. He retired from Miller Tool and Die in Jackson, member of the Eaton Rapids community for 47 years before moving to St. Petersburg. He was preceded in death by Robert Owen Smith and Kenny Robert Denman.

Robert is survived by 2 sons, Robert C. Jr., Jack; 1 daughter, Marie (Dave) Denman, all of Eaton Rapids, several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Thomas Carl Smith Sr.

Thomas Carl Smith Sr., 64, of Olivet, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 1, 2007 from an apparent heart attack. Tom was born Jan. 26, 1943 in Marquette, the son of Glenn and Theressa (Schlehuber) Smith and had been a Charlotte/Olivet area resident since 1964, coming from Pickford.

He was a 1960 graduate of Pickford High School and was the former owner of Smith's Auto Body Shop in Olivet. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of almost 45 years, Sharon (Huyck) Smith; son, Thomas Carl (Lesa) Smith Jr. of Gaylord; daughter, Kari (Bill) Moss of Olivet; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Blain) Thornton, Christopher Brundage, Leigh Anna Brundage and Kaleb Thomas Smith; his mother, Theressa Parent of Munising and sister, Faye (Phil) Fedoruk of Munising.

He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Smith in 1962.

Services were held March 6 at the C. S. Mulder Funeral Home, Sault Ste. Marie. Interment followed in the Oaklawn Chapel Gardens, Sault Ste. Marie. Local arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Billy Lee Snow

Billy Lee Snow passed away at the age of 67 after a long illness on September 4, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Polly.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his children, Connie Miller (Frank Moreno) of Jackson, Dawn (Mike) Benn of Rives Junction, and Robert Steven Snow of Rives Junction; grandchildren, Michael, Kristi, Jeffery and Abbey; four great grandchildren; siblings, Joyce Favero, Evelyn Sisco, Flora (Dick) Alwood and Sam (Jane) Snow; mother-in-law, Georgia Pulver; sisters-in-law, Carol (Jerry) Philps, Phyllis Pulver; brother-in-law, Robert (Judy) Pulver; and many nieces and nephews. We cannot forget his special girls at Zimmerman’s Trading Post. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Esta Snow; three brothers; and 1 sister. Bill retired from Hayes Albion after 33 years. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and enjoyed going to the casinos. He also loved his Michigan Wolverines.

Per his wishes, he has been cremated. Memorial services were at the Wetherby Chapel in Jackson on September 8, 2007.

Richard “Dick” A. Sobleskey

Richard “Dick” A. Sobleskey, 75, of Charlotte died, Friday, Nov. 30. He was born Dec. 17, 1931 in Petoskey, the son of Walter and Nancy (Kilmer) Sobleskey.

Mr. Sobleskey retired in 1993 where he worked for General Motors as a Machine Operator. He enjoyed bass fishing, deer hunting, gardening and working in the apple trees. He also like to ride on his John Deere lawn mower, cutting the grass and working in the yard.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughter, Carolyn (Rick) Barrera; son, Rick (Carrie) Sobleskey; daughter, Marcia (Tim) Ralya; daughter, Laurie (Paul) Davis; son, Allen (Brenda) Sobleskey; daughter, Kris (Matt) Petrelles; son, Kevin (Cheryl) Sobleskey; 20 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; step-sons, Dale (Cristey) Begerow, Randy (Katie) Perrier, Richard (Cathy) Perrier and John (Trisha) Williamson; step-daughter, Theresa (Donn) Smith; 11 step-grandchildren and one step-great grandson; brothers, Robert Sobleskey, Kenny Sobleskey, Ronald Sobleskey, Gerald Sobleskey, Lawrence Sobleskey and Sonny Sobleskey; sisters, Laurie Pearsall, Norma Potts, Millie Nyzak and the mother of his children, Ellen Sobleskey.

He was preceded in death by his son, Paul; grandson, Lance; sisters, Mary and Alice and brothers, June, Eddie and Arthur. Funeral Mass was Monday, Dec. 3 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte with Rev. Fr. Denis R. Spitzley and Pastor Sarah Friesen-Carper officiating. Interment was at Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to A New Beginning Pregnancy Center, Charlotte or Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

June J. (Carey) Sowles

June J. (Carey) Sowles, 81, of Charlotte, died May 5, 2007.

Mrs. Sowles was born Sept. 23, 1925 in Sunfield, the daughter of Morris and Ethel (Rogers) Carey and had been a Charlotte resident since 1968 coming from Vermontville. She had been employed by the former A.E./Hoover Co. and the former T. G. & Y. Store both in Charlotte. She was a graduate of Lake Odessa High School and was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church and the Charloteers Camping Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Sowles on Dec. 5, 2006. Surviving are; sons, Carl (Linda) Sowles of Bourbonnais, Ill. and Terry (Joy) Sowles of Battle Creek; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held May 9 at the St. John's Episcopal Church, Charlotte. Interment in the Woodland Memorial Park in Woodland. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorials may go to the Alzheimers Association.

Willis Spalding

Willis Dean Spalding, 80, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007.

Dean was born March 1, 1927 in Crystal, the son of Fred Adelbert and Clara (Hatt) Spalding. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in WWII. Dean was a 57 year member of Ironworkers Local #25, a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, a former member of Holt First Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Center. He enjoyed sports and especially watching his grandchildren playing their sports.

Preceded in death by his wife, Barbara in 1997 and 10 siblings, Dean is survived by daughter, Karen (Gary) Masarik of Eaton Rapids; sons, William Spalding of Charlotte, David (Eileen Lehnert) Spalding of Jackson, Timothy (Ann Herzberg) Spalding of Eaton Rapids; six grandchildren, Anne and Adam Lehnert-Spalding, Alan and Christopher Shimmin, Benjamin and Robert Spalding; sister, Arlene Henerfouth of Eaton Rapids; brother-in-law, Bruce Blancher of Minnesota.; sister-in-law, Polly Armistead of Tennessee; special friend, Betty Miller of Eaton Rapids; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services were held May 30 at the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids. A graveside service was held at Roseland Memorial Gardens in Jackson. Arrangements were handled by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapids in memory of W. Dean Spalding.

Thomas E. Spencer

Thomas E. Spencer of Eaton Rapids, age 64, passed away Sunday, August 19, 2007 in Eaton Rapids. Thomas was born July 11, 1943 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Edward and Mildred (Forward) Spencer. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1961 and from MSU in 1976 with a B.A. Degree in Fine Arts. Tom continued his love of art and painting his whole life with his private collections throughout Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam era. Tom retired from the City of Lansing Public Service and retired from Eaton Rapids Public Schools in 2005. Thomas, most of all loved his family, was an avid MSU Spartan fan, enjoyed music, movies, sports and the feeding and watching of his birds. He was a member of the Robbins United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids.

Tom is survived by his wife of almost 41 years, Rachel (Canedy); 2 daughters, Erin (Thomas) Simpson of Eaton Rapids and Lindsey (Ken Tripp) Spencer of Charlotte; 5 grandchildren, Collin Spencer, Maiya Simpson, Dominic Simpson, Allison Simpson and Wynter Tripp; 2 sisters, Shirley Watkins of Eaton Rapids and Nancy Dean of Mason; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Sue Allen of Eaton Rapids, Richard Reese of PA, Sally Canedy of Dimondale; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 23, 2007 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Marty DeBow of Robbins UMC officiating. The family will receive friends and family on Wednesday from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robbins United Methodist Church in memory of Thomas Spencer.

Betty Ann Spidel

Betty Ann Spidel of Eaton Rapids, age 61, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2007 in Charlotte. Betty was born December 14, 1945 in New Iberia, Louisiana, the daughter of Dale James and Betty Ann (Delcambe) Excell. She especially loved her family and enjoyed planting flowers.

Betty is survived by her husband of 15 years, Sherman Spidel of Eaton Rapids; daughter, Judy Preston; and son, Robert (Missy) Preston, both of Eaton Rapids; 2 grandchildren, Beth Barker of Olivet and Marissa (Johnny) Wyatt of TN; mother, Betty A. Excell; and ex-husband, Robert Preston, Sr., all of Eaton Rapids.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Dimondale. The family will receive friends and family of Tuesday from 2-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Breslin Cancer Center in memory of Betty A. Spidel..

Virginia Squires

Virginia Mildred "Ginny" Squires, 88, of Bellevue, died July 24, 2007, at the Flower House in Nashville. She was born May 1, 1919, the daughter of Joseph D. and Florence Emma May (Lee) Day in Battle Creek.

Ginny worked in quality control for Oliver Aviation, Wilcox Gay in Charlotte and retired after 25 years from Kelloggs in 1981. She was a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club and the Rebechas. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking and doing crafts. Ginny also enjoyed spending the winter in Okeechobee, Florida.

Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, C. Don Squires in 2004; her sister, Pearl Kinney; and niece, Annie Kelly.

She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Hodges of Anderson, Indiana; son, Larry D. (Jeanne) Squires of Hartford, MI; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services took place July 27, 2007, at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Don Francis, Bellevue First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may go to the Flower House in Nashville. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Freddie Stambaugh

Freddie G. Stambaugh, age 66, of Sunfield, passed peacefully into the waiting arms of God on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. His family was by his side.

Fred was a man with a wonderful sense of humor and a passion for fishing, which he indulged by spending many hours on the lake with his fishing buddy and big brother, Lynwood.

More often than not, he would catch his limit; often sharing with friends and neighbor what he could not eat himself. Fred also owned and ran his own lumber company, "Fall Industries" for many years prior to his retirement in 2004.

Fred leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 47 years Jennie, whom he met and wooed with his baby blues during a baseball game in 1959 and the rest is history.

He was a devoted father and doting grandfather; he also leaves behind his beloved children Lori (Stambaugh) Martinez, of Grand Rapids and Randy Stambaugh of Holland; granddaughters (his pride and joy), Nicole Hop-Martinez and Randi Martinez. Fred is also survived by brothers Lynwood and LeRoy and sister Janet; brothers in law, Skip (Liz) and Dick (Mary Alice) Holtz; several nieces and nephews and of course, many wonderful friends. C

Cremation has taken place and the family will be holding a private memorial service celebrating Freddie's Life.
