Niran Ross

Niran (Rod) Ross, 72, passed away Feb. 14, 2006 in Prescott, Ariz.

He is survived by: Jonelle Moore, Lauri McPhall, Joe and Kimberley; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; twin sister, Nyla (Ronald) Hisler of Charlotte; brother, Robert (Betty) Ross, Marshall Francis (Kaaren) Ross of Seattle, Wash., and Patricia Moon of Marshall.

He was preceded in death by: Bonnie Ross; parents, Leslie and Gladys Ross; brother, Allen Ross and Rosalind Wight.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held later this year in Michigan.

Anna P. Russell

Anna P. Russell, 76, of Vermontville, died Oct. 24, 2006. Mrs. Russell was born in Portage, Ohio Oct. 2, 1930, the daughter of Harry and Nellie (Miller) Smith.

Mrs. Russell was known to many people, both locally and around the world as a top notch dog breeder and owner of Beau Quest Kennel in Vermontville.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlene (R. L.) Bowen of Vermontville; son, Roger (Rita) Russell of Pimbrook Pines, Fla.; daughter, Anita (Robert) Lindsay of Vermontville; son, William (Barbara) Russell of Vermontville; daughter, Rose Robbins of Grand Ledge; daughter, Penny Garcia of Las Vegas, Nev.; stepson, Dennis (Gladys) Redden of California; stepson, Sammy Redden of Texas.

Funeral services were Oct. 24 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Brother Greg Mattson officiating. Interment was Oct. 28 at Portage Township Cemetery near Bowling Green, Ohio. If desired memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House.

Jack Russell

Jack Russell, 74, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006. Mr. Russell was born Sept. 11, 1932 in Lansing, the son of Herbert and Harriett (Payne) Russell.

Many knew Mr. Russell as the owner of Jack Russell Insurance Agency in Charlotte. Most recently he was also known as the Ice Cream King and proud owner and operator of the Langston Kountry Kone. He was a member of the Kiwanis, Eaton County Shrine Club, American Legion, VFW and Charlotte Masonic Lodge #120 F&AM. Mr. Russell enjoyed landscaping, beekeeping, deer hunting and collecting Western Art.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Russell; daughter, Gina (Rick) Wagner of Constantine; son, Jeffrey (Rebecca) Russell of Marshall; stepdaughters, Becky (Scott) Herder of Kalamazoo, Michelle (Caley) Edgerly of Trufant; ten grandchildren; brother, Tom (Debbie) Russell; half-brother, George (Connie) Russell and half-sister, Ferrell of Nashville.

Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Carl Schneider officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet. If desired memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House.

Ryan J. Sanders

Ryan J. Sanders, 54, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006.

Mr. Sanders was born August 30, 1951 in Charlotte, the son of Richard and Helen (Groh) Sanders. Mr. Sanders was a retired production manager for Peckham Industries and a radar operator in the Navy, where he served on the Kennedy during the Vietnam War. He earned his master’s degree in art education from Eastern Michigan University and traveled with the Art Train as a resident artist in metal work. He also earned the Eagle Scout rank. He loved his pets: cats, Bloonoe and Blodgett, and his dog Brandy. Mr. Sanders collected antiques, ceramic roosters, lighthouses and unique items. He enjoyed camping and gardening with his wife, Darlene, and traveling to Mackinaw Island and to their resort on Thornapple Lake.

He is survived by his wife; stepson, James “Shaun” McMahon; two grandchildren, Blaze and Jeron; brother, Scott (Debra) Sanders; nephews, Tim, Jeff and Aaron; nieces, Holly and Megan; and many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside service was held Jan. 24 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Nettie Pearl Sauntmon

Nettie Pearl Sauntmon, of Eaton Rapids, age 93, died Thursday, March 9, 2006, at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte. She was born September 17, 1912 in Eaton Rapids the daughter of Lie Curtis and Eva Mable (Slaught) Milbourn. Nettie was a former Nurses Aide for Sparrow Hospital in Lansing and was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lansing. Preceding her in death was a daughter, Eva Cotton; her first husband William Emmerson Bott and second husband, Glenn Sauntmon.

Surviving are her daughter, Judith (Jack) Alspaugh of Eaton Rapids; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 13th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Jan Hite of the Redeemer Lutheran church, officiating. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids on the Milburn plot next to her husband William Bott. Fro those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility Activities Department in memory of Nettie Sauntmon.

Phyllis M. Saylor

Phyllis M. (Gierke-Beard) Saylor, 67, of Haslett, passed away Jan. 28, 2006 in Charlotte.

Phyllis was born June 15, 1938 in Spruce, the daughter of William Sr. and Dorothy (Flower) Gierke. She enjoyed doing hair at several area assisted-living homes and was an avid bird breeder.

She is survived by: daughters, Sheila (Clarence) Hines of Georgia and Cindy (Paul Schafer) Lounds of Charlotte; stepsons, Dale Saylor of Urbana, Ohio, and Doug Saylor of Delta Township; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Velda Butler of Ionia, Gladys Wilson of Anchorage, Alaska, Linda Stott (Bill Giefke) of Harrison and Wilma Bryant of Florida; brother, William Gierke Jr. of Lansing; special friends, Louise King of Portland and Helen Place of Lansing; and her beloved dog, Napolean.

She was preceded in death by: husband, Keith, in 2004; her parents; and a sister, Vera Gierke.

Funeral services were held Jan. 30 at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with Rev. Timothy Olsen of First Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was at Forrest Lawn Cemetery.

Kyle B. Scears

Kyle Braxton Scears of Battle Creek passed away at birth Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at the University of Michigan Medical Center In Ann Arbor.

Kyle is survived by parents Shawn and Amy (Troutner) Scears; brother Kobe Brennan Scears at home; maternal grandparents, Max and Dena Troutner of Bellevue; parental grandparents, Rob and Debra Brown of Battle Creek; uncles, John Wilkey of Battle Creek and Chad (Amie) Troutner of Shelbyville; aunt, Lacey Wilkey of Battle Creek; special great uncle and aunt Lloyd and Mary Lynn Miller of Bellevue and four cousins.

A private family service was held Friday, April 28. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

In lieu of flowers memorials, contributions may go to the family.

Ruth Schanzlin

Ruth Schanzlin, 91, of Des Plaines, Ill., formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2006 in Des Plaines, Ill. Ruth was born Jan. 15, 1915 in Brookfield Twp. the daughter of Ralph Harrison and Fleeta Ann (Waterbury) Strayer.

She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1933, attended Eaton County Normal and graduated from MSU. Ruth taught school in Eaton Rapids for 10 years and in Costa Rica in 1980. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church - Eaton Rapids, the Esther Circle and the Eaton County School Teacher’s Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Paul Schanzlin in 1969; brothers, Delos Strayer and Albert Strayer; sister, Joyce Kikendall.

Ruth is survived by three daughters, Elise Woods of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Carole (James) Proebstle of Deer Park, Ill., and Marie (Steven) Timm of Bend, Ore.; one son, James Schanzlin of Eaton Rapids; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6 at the First United Methodist Church, 600 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Arrangements were by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Red Bird Mission, 70 Queendale Center, Beverly, Kent., 40913 in memory of Ruth Schanzlin.

Mary Louise Schnepp

Mary Louise Schnepp, age 76 of Eaton Rapids died Friday, July 14, 2006. She was born to Peter and Margaret DeCook on April 9, 1930 in Marquette, Mi. Mary attended John D. Pierce High School and Northern Michigan’s College School for Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse for The Michigan School for the Blind and Dr. Shapiro. She met Lawrence Schnepp of Eaton Rapids through mutual friends. They were married in April 1957. Together they operated Schnepp Refrigeration until their retirement. Mary had many interests, among her favorite activities were quilting, gambling at the casinos, birdwatching, playing Aggravation and camping. Mary and Lawrence enjoyed wintering in Arizona and socializing with friend. She took great pride in her Belgian Heritage and a love for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Mary is survived by her husband, Lawrence; her sister Peggy Wadaga of Baraga, Mi.; four children, Kathy (Rick) Carpenter of Eaton Rapids, Patty (Dan) Davis of Hemlock, Steven (Lori) Schnepp of Eaton Rapids, Susan (Robert) Szedlak of Morrice and 6 grandchildren. Ben and Zachary Davis, Kelli, Rebecca and Joshua Schnepp, Justin Carpenter; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory for Mary L. Schnepp.
