Jeannine Marie Smith

Jeannine Marie Smith Loving, Caring, Beautiful Mother, Grandmother & Sister passed on to be with her Lord Wednesday, August 9, 2006. Born March 26, 1930 in Eaton Rapids one of eight children born to Lloyd and Estar (Edwards) Snow. Jeannine was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, class of 1948. She retired in 1991 from FASCO formerly Eaton Stamping in Eaton Rapids with 25 years of service. After retirement she helped to take care of elderly ladies in which she found great satisfaction. Jeannine was active at the Senior Center, loved Bingo, football, NASCAR and was a huge fan of Dale Earnhart Jr., she was also a member of the 48 Club. She lived several years in Mason while raising her family. Preceding her in death were her husband, Dale Smith; son Tom Donald in 2005; brothers, Dale and Harold Snow.

She is survived by her 5 children, Joe Donald, Yvonne (George) VanDeusen, Daniel Donald, Debra (Edward Harmon) Donald and Jim Donald all of Mason; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Donald of Boyne Falls; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Joyce Favero of Charlotte, Flora (Richard) Alwood of Dalton and Evelyn Sisco of Dimondale; 2 brothers, Billy (Polly) Snow of Tompkins and Sam (Jane) Snow of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews and many close friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 14th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center.

Kathleen M. Smith

Kathleen M. “Kathy” Smith, 57 of Olivet, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006 at Eaton Community Hospice.

Kathleen was born Feb. 24, 1948 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Lennon) Price, who survive. Kathy was a 1966 Harper Creek High School graduate, but lived most of her live in Olivet. She was employed for 15 years as the manager of Olivet Hardware. On June 24, 1967 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Battle Creek, she was united in marriage to George Smith who survives. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Bellevue. Kathy enjoyed motorcycling, gardening, traveling, camping, cats, and bird-watching-especially hummingbirds.

Surviving are; daughters, Tracy (Harry) Reynolds and Susan Hollister, both of Olivet; three grandchildren, Anthony Barnes, Harry Reynolds III and Claudia Reynolds; four brothers, Robert Price of Battle Creek, Thomas (Mary) Price of Battle Creek, Donald (Linda) Price of Kentwood, Dennis Price of Battle Creek; two sisters, Mary (Stan) Hoxie and Carol (James) Biggs, both of Battle Creek; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment was at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS Association). Arrangements were by Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.

Carol A. Soumis

Carol Anne Soumis of Charlotte died peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 25, 2006.

Carol loved life and loved people and gave with all her heart, which was as big as Lake Superior. She loved dogs, horses, camping, fishing, hiking, swimming, playing computer games and helping others. She crafted beautiful afghans, was a marvelous gourmet cook and loved kitchen gadgets. She took a hard situation like her illness and somehow used humor to even brighten the day of her doctors and caregivers. After tending to her father's needs in his last days, the past three years she has resided with her sister, Jan and brother-in-law, Gary in Charlotte, along with her beloved dog, Lily and the rest of the dogs, in close proximity to skillful Lansing doctors. Carol was a bright spot in this world and we will miss her shining smile.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Don Charboneau; brothers-in-law, Jack Johnson and Dennis Hawkes; parents, Lillian, Leon and Toni Charboneau.

She is survived by her beloved son, Kevin Soumis of Marquette; two brothers, Harvey (Dee) Charboneau and Ralph (Sherran) Charboneau of Cheboygan; three sisters, Marion Jackson of Fairbanks, Ark., Gayle Hawkes of Cheboygan and Janice (Gary) Shall of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Irene Charboneau of Cheboygan; and was the favorite aunt of many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 16, which would have been her 61st birthday, at the home of her nephew, Alan and Stasia Griffis at 2 p.m. Another small memorial will be held in the Shall home on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. for her Charlotte friends.

Carl E. Sowles

Carl E. Sowles, 79, of Charlotte died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 in Charlotte. Carl was born Aug. 20, 1927 in Grand Rapids and had been a Charlotte resident since 1968, coming from Vermontville.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Fisher Body Division of General Motors in Lansing in 1977 after 29 years of service. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church of Charlotte, the Charloteers Camping Club and was a former Boy Scout leader.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and a sister.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, June J. (Carey) Sowles; two sons, Carl (Linda) Sowles of Bourbonnais, Ill. and Terry (Joy) Sowles of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Jason (Marci) Sowles, Ben Sowles, Bruce (Jennifer) Sowles and Angela (Damon) Harrison; and five great-grandchildren, Jaden, Caleb and Andrew Sowles and Noah and Mara Harrison.

Funeral services were held Dec. 9 at the St. John's Episcopal Church, 201 W. Shepherd St., Charlotte. Interment was in the Woodland Memorial Park, Woodland. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. John's Episcopal Church.

Frank A. Spears, Sr.

Frank Amos Spears, Sr., 82, of Cahokia, Ill., died Monday, June 6, 2006, at his residence. He was born July 14, 1923 in Potterville

Mr. Spears was retired from Cassen transport, Renton, Mo. He was a Life Member of East Lodge 504 AF & AM of Fairview Heights, Ill., He was a life member of Ainad Temple Shrine of East St. Louis, Ill., the Uniformed Units and the Legion of Honor (past commander), of both Ainad, High Twelve Club 35, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Southern Illinois, Queen City Order of the Eastern Star (past patron) of Fairview Heights, Ill., York Rite Bodies Chapter 221 RAM of Granite City, Ill., Earl of Torrell Council 24 Knight Masons of the USA, Springfield, Ill., Charles A. Lindbergh Chapter 247 National Sojourners, Inc., of Belleville, Ill., and the Grand Order of the Sword of Bunker Hill Belle-Clair Order 85 of Belleville, Ill., He was a life member of VFW Post 2406 of Michigan and was a World War II and Korean War US Army Veteran.

He was preceded in death by two stepsons, Phillip and Calvin Shafer; his parents, Carmi and Marjorie (Fordum) Spears; two brothers: Clarence and Fred Sr; and a sister, Margaret Phalen.

Surviving are his wife: Sandy (Wimmer) Spears; a son, Frank Spears Jr., of Potterville; a step-daughter, Sue Maynard of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister, Freda Downey of Overall, Va.; two granddaughters, Talis Shubert and Sara Rudd; three great-grandchildren, Azlynn, Nathanial and Jaden. He was a dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.

Burial will take place at the Benton Township Cemetery in Potterville on July 12, 2006 at 3 p.m.

Peter F. Sperry

Peter F. Sperry, 52, of Glendale, Ariz. passed away on April 8, 2006. He was born April 11, 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Frank and Sydney (Rivenburg) Sperry.

Peter graduated from Central Michigan University. He married Laurie on Aug. 6, 1977 in Charlotte. He was a former employee of 84 Lumber, Color Tile and Walgreens. He was active at his church, especially in the Awana program. His humor, good nature and caring will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie (Klaiss) Sperry and son, Timothy Sperry. He is also survived by his father, Frank Sperry of St. Ignace, and sisters Sydney Bridges and Susan Maple.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sydney, and brother Jonathan.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, April 13 in Phoenix, Ariz. His internment will be held later at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale, Ariz.

Mary M. Spore

Mary M. Spore, 90, of Lansing passed away Oct. 21, 2006. She was born Dec. 7, 1915 in Kalamo.

Mary previously resided at Independence Village in Grand Ledge. She retired in 1981 from the State of Michigan, Dept. of Social Services after 29 years of service. She was an avid Detroit Tigers, Lions and Pistons fan. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles and reading. Mary loved traveling, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her foreign exchange granddaughters.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Orve E. and Lena L. (Gould) Burkett; husband, Reo Spore (1951); and brother, Milton Burkett.

Survivors include daughter, Terri (Lynn) Irwin; son, Roswell (Lou-Ann) Spore; grandchildren, John (Sherri) Irwin, Shannon Blake, Nicole (Matt) Mysliwiec; step-grandson, Scott Kryder; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jacob Irwin, Marley Kryder; sister-in-law, Neva Spore; niece, Donna (Dan) Mikesell.

The Witness to the Resurrection Service for Mary Spore was held Oct. 25 at Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Lansing. Those desiring may make contributions to North Presbyterian Church, 108 W. Grand River, Lansing, Mich., 48906 in memory of Mrs. Mary M. Spore.

Michael V. Spotts

Michael V. Spotts, 56, of Charlotte, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2006 at the Eaton Community Hospice House.

Mike was born April 10, 1950 in Charlotte and was a lifelong Charlotte area resident. He was a 1968 graduate of Olivet High School and had been employed at General Motors in Lansing from where he retired in 2000 after 30 years of service.

Surviving are: his life partner, Christine Halsey; daughter, Renee Spotts, of Minnesota; son, Ryan Spotts, of Olivet; four grandchildren, Kaitlin Spotts, Crystal Spotts, Michael Spotts and Joey Spotts; brother, Nolan (Jackie) Spotts, of Charlotte; sister, Fay (Harold) Lucas, of Battle Creek; several nieces and nephews and special family members, Tom and Joan Halsey, Mike (Pam) Cary, Debra Burton, Cheryl Halsey, Linda (Mike) Allman and Brad (Cindy) Halsey.

He was preceded in death by a son, Nicholas Michael Spotts in April 2005 and his parents, Kenneth and Ozell Spotts.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Pastor Mark Woodbury. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may go to the Eaton Community Hospice.
