Caroline Bernice Vallin

Caroline Bernice Vallin, a long rime resident of Eaton Rapids, went home to be with The Lord on June 25, 2006 at the Eaton Community Hospice House, Charlotte. She was born August 9, 1929 in Ypsilanti, the daughter of John and Pearl (Wilber) Storm. Caroline, along with her husband, Edward, were a part of the VFW National Home for children for 17 years. The many children she had “mothered” have remained close to her throughout the years and many have helped care for her during her extended illness.

She was preceded in death by her son, Lawrence Smith, who was killed in Viet Nam, and is survived by her husband of 39 years, Edwardo; her sister, Murita (Bill) Carson of Ypsilanti; her twin brother, Carl (Lenor) Strom of Ypsilanti; her sons and daughters, John (Susan) Smith of El Paso, TX, David Smith of Austin, TX, Lathen James Smith of Sierra Vista, AZ, Lyle Frederickson of Eaton Rapids, Robert (Evelyn) Westfall of Hastings, Mary Leffel of Kingsley, David (Delaine) Bria of Eaton Rapids, Cindy (Bobby) Landry of Eaton Rapids, Valerie Vozar of Eaton Rapids, Carol Rattigan of OK, Linda (Gary) Reeder of Eaton Rapids, Brycella (Allen) Roth of Fort Wayne, IN, and many more who are her “children”; grandchildren, Kim, John, Jason, Stephanie, Lathen, Pam, Luke, Shaye, Evadne, Jimmy , Larry, Yolanda, Roxanne, Joshua, Nicole, Jennifer, James, Brenda, Barbara, Robbie, Ray, Keith, Jeff, Nikiya, Karlena, Caroline, and Donna; great grandchildren, Isaac, Nolan, Mikala, Austin, Lana and Antonio; numerous nieces & nephews.

Family will receive friends Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Services celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2006 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Marty Saunders officiating. A graveside service will follow at Rosehill Cemetery. All friends and family are invited to share in a luncheon following at the VFW national Home Guest Lodge. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are requested for either the VFW National Home for children of the Eaton Commmunity Hospce. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and loved ones, too many to mention. .

Harvey Lawrence Vanous

Harvey Lawrence Vanous of Holt and formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 87, died Saturday, April 15, 2006. He was born August 17, 1918 in Kidder County, North Dakota the son of Emil and Minetta (Saur) Vanous. Harvey served in the army during World War II and was stationed in the Phillipines. He retired from Lindell Drop Forge in Lansing. A member of the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church, the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens and a life member of the Charlotte V.F.W. Post #2406. Harvey was preceded in death by 3 children, Lawrence, Jeff and Harvey Ray Vanous; and sister, Cora.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Maxine; 8 children, Alice Vanous of CA, Arlene Vanous of TX, Audrey (Ed) Doxtader of North Dakota, Arlet Grinnell of Lansing, Ardes Page of TX, Edward (Sharon) Vanous of Springport and Elizabeth Brooks of Maine; 35 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild; 3 brothers, Emil (Alice) Vanous of Washington, Leonard (Edna) Vanous of MN, Elwyn (Helen) Vanous of North Dakota; 2 sisters, Dorothy Maurer and Fern Vanous both of North Dakota; numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parma Village Cemetery in Parma with full military honors. Arrangements were made through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church in memory of Harvey L. Vanous.

Anna P. VanSyckle

Anna Pearle VanSyckle, 55, of Bellevue, died at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2006. She was born May 10, 1951 in Charlotte, the daughter of Donald L. and Lillian C. (Root) VanSyckle.

She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1968. Anna was a care giver and worked at Choice Care Adult Foster Care Home and the former Arrowood Nursing Center until her illness. Anna was a member of Truth Believers Assembly, enjoyed gardening, needle point and painting but was a mom and grandmother first.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Donald.

She is survived by her life long partner, Governor G. Guy; daughter, Sequret L. VanSyckle of Battle Creek; three sons, Michael S. (Jodi), Demetrius L. (Diana), Christopher D. VanSyckle all of Battle Creek; 11 grandchildren; her mother, Lillian C. VanSyckle of Bellevue; two sisters, Sharon (Don) Atkins of Lakeland Fla., Lola (Bob) LeClear of Bellevue; and a dear friend Ginny Pitman of Battle Creek.

Funeral services were held Oct. 12 at the funeral home with Rev. Barry E. Dillard officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Friends who wish may make memorial contribution to Lifespan /Hospice. Personal remembrances may be made at www.farleyestesdowdle.com.

James R. VanWormer

James Richard VanWormer, 63, of Eaton Rapids, died suddenly Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006. Mr. VanWormer was born June 26, 1943, in Lansing, the son of Paul and Frances (Wright) VanWormer.

He served in the U.S. Navy and 25 years as a state mechanical inspector, retiring in 2002. Not only could he fix anything, but he also built cherished furniture and toy boxes for his children and grandchildren. He traveled the world on mission trips through First Assembly of God church, where he was a former Royal Ranger Leader.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, Jeff (Karla) VanWormer of Lansing and David (Patty) VanWormer of Tennessee; daughters, Amy (Gary) O'Hare of Flint and Kari (Nathan) Weller of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, Kyler, Kalyn, Kalyb, Mattheu, and Arrianne VanWormer, Austin and Brandon O'Hare, and Anna Weller; step-brothers, Charles (Virginia) VanWormer of Missouri and Richard (Faith) VanWormer of Indiana; three sisters-in-law Mary (Bill) Nemeth of Lansing, Linda VanLoton of Potterville, and Joanne (Denny) Schalow of Potterville.

Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 28 at the First Assembly of God of Greater Lansing church in East Lansing, with Pastor Curt Dalaba officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice, First Assembly of God of Greater Lansing, or Charity of Choice.

William O. Varney

William O. Varney, 60, of rural Charlotte, died Wednesday evening, March 8, 2006, at his residence following a long illness.

Mr. Varney was born June 29, 1945 in Hastings, a son of Merle and Hazel (Stalter) Varney. He was an Army Vietnam veteran and a retired Fisher Body employee.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Darrel Varney.

Surviving are: his wife, Sherry; two daughters, Kathryn Crawford of Grand Ledge and Michelle Varney of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Jesse, Sara and Jimmy; one sister, Shirley Owen of Battle Creek; two brothers, Victor Varney of Hastings and Richard (Sharon) Varney of Nashville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held March 11 at Stoney Point - Warner Cemetery near Nashville, with Pastor Carla Smith officiating. Pallbearers were Dena Ellison, Julie Reed, Brian Varney, Christopher Varney, Richard Varney and Wayne Varney.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements were by Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken.

Albert C. Verhelle

Albert C. Verhelle, 91, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Monday, July 31, 2006, in Charlotte. Albert was born October 24, 1914, in Douglas, Alaska, the son of Alfons and Martha (Delmontte) Verhelle. He was a millwright with John Bean in Lansing and farmed all of his life. With his skill as a carpenter, he built their cabin in Lazern where he also enjoyed fishing in Big Creek. When Albert was 74, he started playing golf with his son, Richard. He enjoyed restoring old tractors, was an avid reader, loved his cats and dogs, and really loved family gatherings at his farm with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary B. (1988); son, Robert L. Verhelle (2003); granddaughter, Theresa (1966); and brother, Andree. Albert is survived by one daughter, Margaret (Roger) Creighton of Charlotte; one son, Richard A. (Lois) Verhelle of Eaton Rapids; nine grandchildren, Denise (Rob) Coats, Janene (Mitch) Rowe, Nicholas (Laura) Custance, Thad Lewis, Brenda Hewitt, Pam (Billy) Jarvis, Robert (Alison) Verhelle, Anna (Rudy) Spears, and Mary Lou Verhelle; eleven great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; brother, Alex (Margaret) Verhelle of Farewell; sister-in-law, Mildred Verhelle of Eaton Rapids, and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services were held Thursday, August 3, 2006, at the Shelly-Odell funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with Father Bennett Constantine as Celebrant. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Albert Verhelle.

Frank Pennington Voshell, Jr.

Frank Pennington Voshell Jr., 67, of Sunfield went home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Oct. 19, 2006. He was born June 20, 1939 in Dover, Del., son of Frank P. and Dorothy (Todd) Voshell Sr.

Frank married Sheryll Huff on June 17, 1961 and she preceded him in death on May 4, 1999. He then married Kathy Freeman on Dec. 27, 1999. Frank Spent four years in the U.S. Navy working on airplanes, which later became his passion. He was the owner of Frank Voshell Aviation for many years and completed numerous airplane projects from RVs to Starduster IIs. Frank loved to do acrobatic flying.

Frank will be loved and missed by his wife, Kathy of Sunfield; mother, Dorothy Voshell of Quarryville, Pa.; sons, Todd (Jami) Voshell of Clarksville, Timothy (Kimberly) Voshell of Hastings; daughter, Gretchen (Jake) Hall of Eckerman; step-daughters, Kari (Edward) Milhorn of Tennessee, and Josephine (Quade) Kimball of Escanaba; grandchildren, Gordon, Henry, Lydia and Samantha Voshell; Jerin and Justin Voshell; Autumn and Jessie Hall; Quane and Evelyn Kimball and Reese Milhorn; brothers and sisters, Dorothy (Rajai) Atalla, Jerry (Emily) Voshell, Faye Voshell, Glen (Gayle) Voshell, Doreen (Robert) McClure and Nina (Jim) Watts.

A graveside services was held Oct. 24 at the Sunfield Cemetery with Pastor Mick Funderburg from Calvary Grace Brethren Church of Alto officiating. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Frank P. Voshell family, Hastings Flying Association. C/O RFH P.O. Box 36 Sunfield, MI 48890.

Arrangements were made by the Independent Family Owned Funeral Home in Sunfield: Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield.

James Allen Waldron

James Allen Waldron, age 62, of Onondaga, died Tuesday, February 7, 2006 in Charlotte. He was born May 20, 1943 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Edward and Ida Fransina (Lathorp) Waldron. Jim was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, class of 1961. He retired after 36 years of service from General Motors in Lansing, and was a member of the U.A.W. Local #652. He was a member of the Aurelius Baptist Church in Mason. An avid gun collector and a life member of the N.R.A.

Surviving are is his wife of 34 years, Margaret; 3 step-sons, Chaplin Lieutenant Colonel David (Jackie) Pollok of Fort Carson, CO., Dennis (Lana) Pollok of Mason and Ronald (Christine) Pollok of Durand; 7 step-grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Hoffman of Eaton Rapids and Rachel (Clifford) Cole of Allendale; brother, Donald (Marilyn) Waldron of St. Clair Shores; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 10 from Aurelius Baptist Church at 4419 W. Barnes Rd., Mason with interment following in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids.

For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the Aurelius Baptist Church in memory of James A. Waldron.

Joseph F. Walker

Joseph Frazier Walker, 86, of Grand Ledge, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on January 2, 2006. He was born on January 23, 1919 in Battle Creek and spent his school days in Olivet.

He attended Olivet College and was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. He married Delores Verhougstraete on April 27, 1946. The couple made their home and raised their family in Lansing.

During his work life, he was employed by Motor Wheel Corporation and Diamond Reo, retiring in 2000 from his favorite job at Ledge Meadow Golf Course.

He will always be remembered for his lively wit and sense of humor, as well as his life-long love of sports, including baseball, golf, bowling and fly-fishing.

He was a staunch Wolverine fan, passionately supporting all University of Michigan athletic programs, particularly football.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delores Walker; daughters, Connie Lawson and Christine Walker; and three grandchildren, Marnie Lawson Draper, Trent (Renee) Lawson, all of Grand Ledge, Trenna (Brian) Lawson Nees of Chesapeake, Va; seven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Nick Draper, Lucas Nees, Paige Lawson, Sonny, Korrielynn and Taylor DeLand; and many friends at Ledge Meadows Golf Course and the staff of The Eaton County Medical Care Facility.

A mass was held at St. Gerard Catholic Church, Delta Township, with The Reverend Fr. John R. Klein, celebrant.

The Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home of Grand Ledge served the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility Foundation, 530 W. Beech St., Charlotte, MI 48813.
