David R. Koning

David Ross Koning, 81, died peacefully in his home Friday, Nov. 5, 2004.

He was born in his family home in Beech Grove, Ind., on Oct. 25, 1923, the third of four children born to Claude William Koning and Bertha (VanderMoere) Koning. His parents took him to the Cradle Roll and Sunday school of the Dutch Reformed Church, located next door to their home. The close bonds found in a loving family, the daily Bible readings, and the observances of Sundays and attending worship services instilled in him a love of family, church and strong faith. Early experiences of riding in a horse-drawn milk delivery wagon with his father, and helping nearby farmers with chores and plowing, walking behind a horse-drawn plow, created in him his life-long love of agriculture, cattle and horses.

In June 1941, Dave graduated from Arsenal Technical Schools in Indianapolis. At the beginning of World War II, Dave was rejected by the armed forces because a severe bout of scarlet fever at the age of 8 had left him completely hairless, with no hair or beard, and no eyelashes or eyebrows to protect his eyes. So he began learning the tool and die trade like his dad. However, after the war years he went back to his early goals. In 1949, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and animal husbandry from Purdue University with high honor, and he was chosen for the Alpha Zeta Honor Society. He had earned his tuition by milking, morning and night, the Purdue dairy herd. Then, having been hired by the Pet Milk Co., he served as a dairy field-man for 19 years. Even though he was a bachelor, he bought a farm near Angola, Ind., and stocked it with diary cattle, pigs, chickens, a team of work horses and even some horse-drawn farm tools. He also planted a garden and built a milk house.

In 1952, Dave was transferred to Pet Milk Co. in Hudson, Mich., where during a short hospital stay he met nurse Evelyn Myrtle DeMeritt Sears, a widow who had a 2-year-old daughter, Kathleen. They were married Sept. 20, 1952. Dave adopted Kathleen, who adored her “daddy.” With the births of Ross, Christine and Paul, the couple felt God had blessed them with the perfect family.

The family’s final move to the Charlotte Pet Milk Co. in 1958 followed three years of working in Holgate, Ohio. Dave was very involved in family life and the life of their church, Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. He worked with the offering each week and the treasurer of the church. He painted Sunday school rooms and hallways. He also served as president of the Methodist Men, and was a long-time member of the Sunday Celebration Adult Sunday school class. He and Evelyn chaperoned the Charlotte Oriole Band to the World’s Fair in New York City. They also chaperoned the band to competitions in Mexico City. Dave was the den dad for Cub Scouts. The family enjoyed all the sporting events, music and drama presentations in the community. Each year the family vacation trips were camping across the country. Dave and Evelyn’s 50th wedding anniversary cruise and tour of Alaska was one of the highlights of their travels.

After the Charlotte Pet Milk Co., relocated, Dave worked with Quality Farm and Fleet Stores in Lansing until his retirement in 1985. Since then, each Monday he visited shut-ins and delivered cassette tapes of the church service to them. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and was a life member of Eaton Area Senior Center. As a kazoo player and a solo whistler in the Charlotte Kitchen Band, he played for the pleasure of many groups. He square danced with the Star Twirlers Club and enjoyed pitching horseshoes with the Horseshoe Pitching Club. He is a past patron and life member of Maple City Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Charlotte and a 50-year-plus member of Angola Masonic Lodge and had a life membership with them.

Dave’s goal was to live each day with love, grace, dignity and a sense of humor. He genuinely loved people and seemed able to help each one feel special, valued and loved.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, sister Doris (Karl Rahdert), and brother William (Bobbie) Koning.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Evelyn; four children, Kathleen (Craig) Moore of South Bend, Ind., Ross (Christine) Koning of Willimantic, Conn., Christine (Mark) Thiel of Plano, Texas; Paul (Kristen) Koning of San Jose, Calif.; grandchildren, Ben (Stacey) Thueme, Becky Thueme, Jeffrey Thueme, Sarah Thueme, Hans (Tanya) Koning, Katie Koning, Kurt Koning, Steven Thiel, Greg Thiel, Derek Koning, Devon Koning; great-grandsons, Jacob Thueme, Kyle Thueme, Jadyn Koning; sister, Betty (Warren) Houseman of La Jolla, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, with dinner and fellowship after the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church or to hospice. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
