Thomas Alva Emery

Thomas Alva Emery, 85, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003 in Lansing.

Mr. Emery was born Feb. 11, 1918 in Albion, the son of Clyde and Clarabelle (Shaffer) Emery. He was named after Thomas Alva Edison and there was hardly anything he couldn’t make or build. He was a tool and die maker and an avid reader. He served his country as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II.

He is survived by his children, Tom (Barbara) Emery of Charlotte, Kathi (Tom) Dominguez of DeWitt, James D. (Nancy) Emery of Land O Lakes, Fla., Eugene (Linda) Emery of Vermontville and Carmen Emery of Holt; 25 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine in 2002, his parents, and brothers Richard and Donald.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Chuck Jenson officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery in Charlotte.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Community Music School, Music Therapy Outreach Program, 841 Timberlake Street, Suite B, East Lansing, MI 48823; make checks payable to Michigan State University with a note “Community Music School.” This program provides classroom activities and a summer camp program to children with disabilities.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Richard English

Richard L. English, age 76, of Hemet, Calif., formerly of Lansing and Charlotte, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003 at Hemet Valley Medical Center in Hemet, Calif.

Mr. English was born July 16, 1927 in Lansing and had lived in Hemet, Calif. for 10 years and Parris, Calif. for five years. He owned and operated restaurants in Michigan and Ohio for 15 years. While in Charlotte he owned and operated Dick’s Restaurant on East Lawrence Ave. In California he was active with the “Nostalgics” (a music group) in Hemet and was also a musician/songwriter with the Bing Crosby Organization and later evangelized with his music for many years.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Clella Janet English of Hemet; sister, Eugenia Rae Davis of Charlotte and one niece and two nephews in Michigan.

Funeral services were held Oct. 20 at Miller Jones Mortuary in Hemet, Calif. Graveside services were held Oct. 23 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, with Rev. David McLane officiating. Local arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Connie J. Hollandsworth Evans

Connie June Hollandsworth Evans was born June 3, 1940 in Lansing, the Mary Elizabeth Odom and Olney Bartholomew Hollandsworth. She graduated from Williamston high school in 1958. Connie was active in the FHA (Future Homemakers of America), Bible Club, Drama Club and Camera Clubs while in high school. Connie and Howard were the “hit of the dance floor” anywhere they went: high school dances, wedding receptions and anniversary parties. On May 26, 1956, as a sophomore at Williamston High, Connie was crowned “Miss Williamston” at the city’s Spring Festival with a vote count of 28,600. Growing up, Connie was also active at the United Methodist Church of Williamston and sang in the church choir. Her favorite holidays were Easter, Christmas, and the Fourth of July celebrations. Connie married her high school sweetheart, Howard “Howdy” W.L. Evans on May 29, 1959.

They have three children, Teresa (Ronald) Montague of Olivet, Todd (Cathy) Evans of Marshall, and Troy (Connie) Evans of Charlotte. She had nine grandchildren, Angela and Ricki Evans, Jamie and Kailee Montague, Cody and Casey Jo Evans, Cari Montague, Tabetha and Jacob Bess; great-grandchildren, Dakota King and Carlie Troutner; sisters, Bonnie (Bob) Morales of Saranac, Dorothy Mowers of Holt, Millie (Bob) Canavan of California; brother, Thomas (Audrey) Hollandsworth of Saranac.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, and brothers Raymond and Jerry Hollandsworth.

Connie worked at the Cunningham’s Drug Store and Soda Shop, then with Pediatrician Dr. Sanders, then Dairyland Insurance Company. In 1969 she began working at Lansing Automakers Federal Credit union. She worked as a teller then in the collections and loan departments. Connie represented Local #459 as a union steward for two years and was extremely proud to work in Lansing for this branch of the auto industry. As the patriotic person she was, she would always remind you to “Buy American” and might even tell you why. Most recently, Connie and Howard lived in Dowling, on Bristol Lake. After her hospitalization on Dec. 9, 2002, she was cared for at Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek, until she chose to return home on April 22. Her last days were enjoyed at home at the lake with her husband, family, friends and her special friend, Diamond, the Lab.

Funeral services were held April 30 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or Life Span Hospice.

Edward A. Evans

Edward A. Evans, 55, of Bellevue, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003 at home.

Mr. Evans was born July 11, 1948 to Leonard and Marguerite (Polgar) Evans in Marshall. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1966 and attended Parsons Business School in Kalamazoo and Western Michigan University. He was also a member of the Army Reserves. Mr. Evans was a partner in H & W Timber Co., working as a timber appraiser. He was a member of the Bellevue Conservation Club and Lansing Chamber of Commerce, and enjoyed fishing for salmon and hunting.

He is survived by son, Derek Evans of Bellevue; daughter, Amanda (Steve) Begley of Fort Wayne, Ind.; mother, Marguerite Evans of Bellevue; sister, Carol Ann (Gary) Adams of Madera, Calif.; nephew, Pete Adams of Bremerton, Wash.; niece, Angela Garcia of Madera and their families.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Evans Jr.; and brothers, Michael Evans and Leonard Evans III.

Services were held Nov. 6 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Bellevue. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund or C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 1500 E. Medical Center Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0286. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Dale James Excell

Dale James Excell, age 81 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003 in East Lansing. Dale was born March 29, 1921 in Lansing, the son of James Lewis and Elva Matilda (Wertenberger) Excell. He graduated in the Class of 1939 from

Perry High School. Dale was a veteran of the U.S. Army and employed at Duo-Therm in Lansing for 17 years. He and his wife were landlords in Eaton Rapids from 1963-1997, owned the Excell Grocery and operated a radio and television repair shop in Onondaga from 1958-1972. He was preceded in death by his sister, Eileen Gardner.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betty Ann (Delcambre); daughter, Betty (Sherman) Spidel of Eaton Rapids; 2 grandchildren, Judy Preston of Charlotte, Robert Preston, Jr. of Eaton Rapids; 2 great-granddaughters, Marissa and Elizabeth Barker of Olivet; 2 sisters, Evelyn Excell of CO., Ermel Parshall of Potterville and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 8, 2003, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Dimondale, MI. Casket Bearers were Sherman Spidel, Robert Preston, Jr., and Jamie Grinage.

Ilah A. Faulkner

Ilah A. Faulkner, 80, of Charlotte, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003 after a short illness. Miss Faulkner was born Aug. 22, 1923 on the family farm in Eaton County, the daughter of Ira and Ruby (Love) Faulkner.

She worked as a secretary for Century Mutual and Farm Bureau Insurance, retiring in 1985 and was a member of the Free Methodist Church of Charlotte.

She is survived by her twin sister, Alta Poskey of Potterville, sister Ivadean Dickinson of Charlotte, brothers, Hugh (Adalyn) Faulkner of Livonia, Lynn Faulkner of Lansing, Carrol “Pete” (Dorothy) Faulkner of Battle Creek, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services [are] at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Darold Hill officiating. Interment will be in West Carmel Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Free Methodist Church or Eaton Community Hospice.

Doris M. Feasal

Doris M. Feasal, 82, of Mulliken, died Thursday evening, Sept. 11, 2003 at her home, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Feasal was born April 12, 1921 in Roxand Township, a daughter of Edward and Lula (Winters) Vedder. On June 12, 1943 she married William Feasal and they resided in Roxand Township for all their married life. Mrs. Feasal enjoyed gardening, canning, folk art, family and friends. She was a former librarian with the Mulliken Library and was a life member and past matron of Mulliken OES #161.

Mrs. Feasal was preceded in death by her infant son, Robert Terry Feasal; her parents; four brothers and three sisters, Lyle Vedder, Ella Vedder, Eva Smith, Harding Vedder, Loid Vedder, Vera Viele and Ward Vedder.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, William Feasal; three children, William (Jill) Feasal of Mulliken, Cheryl (Bill) Roll of Charlotte, Andy Feasal of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Letha Bentley and Velma (John) Marsh, both of Mulliken; one brother, Keith (Roberta) Vedder of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Sept. 15 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home in Mulliken, with Rev. Joseph Spackman officiating. Interment was at Meadowbrook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Josh Roll, Andy Roll, Dwayne Vedder, Edd Vedder, James Vedder, Rod Vedder and Kendal Viele.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sunfield SPYS or Eaton Community Hospice.

Mae R. Fernsler

Mae R. Fernsler, age 85, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility after a long illness.

Mrs. Fernsler was born Dec. 24, 1917 in Lapeer, the daughter of Nels and Clara (Owen) Sorenson and had been a resident of Chester Township since 1950. She was a retired secretary for the Eaton County Probation & Parole Office, with 20 years of service. She was a member of Gresham United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, was a member of the Widow’s Club and a former Cub Scout den mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Fernsler; son, Brian Fernsler; brother, Don Sorenson; and sister, Eva Curtis.

Surviving are her son, Doug (Cookie) Fernsler of Portland; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Ruby Tibbits of Columbiaville.

Funeral services were held Oct. 6 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Kathleen Smith of Gresham United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gresham United Methodist Church.
