Judy A. Hook

Judy A. Hook, age 58, of Nashville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 30, 2003 at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Mrs. Hood was born March 8, 1945 in Hastings, the daughter of Ermund and Betty (McClelland) Strong. She was raised on the family farm on Morgan Road and attended area schools, graduating from Nashville High School in 1963. After high school, she attended Wright Beauty Academy in Battle Creek. On Aug. 6, 1965, at the family farm in Nashville, she married Larry Hook. The two spent their lives together in the Nashville area, eventually purchasing a farm on Lawrence Road where they settled. She was employed with several local businesses throughout the years but her true passion was helping other folks in the community. Judy was the type of person who never met a stranger. She was well-known for her ability and willingness to seek those who needed a helping hand and then lend her assistance in any way possible. Through the years, Judy’s service to her community was recognized as she was decorated with awards including personal recognitions from Michigan’s governor. In her spare time, Judy enjoyed crocheting, doing crafts at her home and sharing time with her beloved pets, especially her dogs. For Christmas she spent countless hours making presents for all the dogs she cared for, and their owners. In her earlier years she and Larry enjoyed roller-skating and spending time together.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Larry; one sister, Dianne Hildreth; sisters-in-law, Judy (Ken) Rogers, Nora (Ed) Hickey and Vicky (Bion) Eye; three nephews and four nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ermund and Betty (McClelland) Strong.

Funeral services were held Sept. 3 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville fire department or ambulance service.

Robert “Bob” J. Hopcraft

Robert “Bob” J. Hopcraft, age 84, of Onondaga, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003, in Jackson. Bob was born May 16, 1919 in Tompkins Twp. the son of Frederick Vern and Jessie (Sweeney) Hopcraft. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army Infantry. Bob retired from Clark Equipment in 1972 after 31 years of service. He was active in the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame, was an Administrative Leader for Jackson Co. 4-H and a member of the Onondaga Senior Citizens.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Eva; daughter, Shirley (Lee) Hunter of Rives Junction; son, Don Hopcraft of Jackson; 6 grandchildren, Becky (Ron) Case, Lori (Marty) Dowding, Ken Hunter, Rhonda (Dale) McEldowney, Robin (Greg) Lucas; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 26, 2003, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Galen Grulke of Heart of the Sheperd Lutheran Church in Howell, officiating. Interment followed at Tompkins Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to the Jackson Co. 4-H Foundation in memory of Robert J. Hopcraft.

Minnie M. Horn

Minnie M. (Zook) Horn, age 106, died Thursday, Feb. 13 2003 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility.

Mrs. Horn was born Nov. 3, 1896 in LaGrange, Ind., the daughter of George and Maude (Kremer) Zook and had been a Charlotte resident since 1915. She was a retired practical nurse, having received her training from Dr. Newmark in Charlotte. Mrs. Horn was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Charlotte Grange. She was married to Paul F. Horn on Sept. 1, 1917.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Horn on Apr. 24, 1956 and daughter-in-law, Esther Mae Horn on Apr. 28, 1999.

Surviving are her son, Harold Horn of Charlotte; granddaughter, Shirley (Dale) Hice of Hastings; great-grandchildren, Dale (Doreen) Hice Jr. of Saranac and Dyanna Chesebro of Caledonia; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb17 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.

Phyllis J. Howe

Phyllis J. (Cochrane) Howe, age 79, of Charlotte, died Thursday, May 15, 2003 at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Howe was born March 11, 1924 at Kelly’s Corners in Sunfield Township, the daughter of Harry and Gladys (Lemmon) Cochrane, and was a lifelong Eaton County resident. She was a 1942 graduate of Charlotte High School, and with her late husband, ahd owned and operated Menzo Howe Excavating in Charlotte. Previously she was employed at Wilcox-Gay Co., the Charlotte airport, and was a telephone operator in Charlotte. She was married to Menzo Howe on April 13, 1952 in Charlotte.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Janette (Steve) Smith of Charlotte and Jacalyn (Dale) Goodrich of Potterville; five grandchildren, Karen Smith, Shawn Goodrich and Laura Goodrich; and one sister, Dorothy Desgrange of Eaton Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services were held May 19 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with the Rev. Kendall Lewis officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barry-Eaton Health Department’s Visiting Nurse Program.

Rodney L. Hoyt

Rodney Lynn Hoyt, 59, of Frederic, Wis., formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn.

Rodney was born June 30, 1944 in Charlotte, the son of Elmer and Katherine (Willis) Hoyt and had been a Wisconsin resident for 23 years, moving there from Charlotte. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1, 1964 to June 30, !967, with duty in Germany. He was employed as an alcohol and other drugs guidance counselor.

Surviving are his daughter, Deanna Lynn (Dirk) Gardner of Lake Odessa; grandson, Brendan Gardner; and two brothers, Barry Hoyt of Bellevue and Dave Hoyt of Franklin, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gary Hoyt.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services were held Dec 19 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with the Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment of cremains was at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.

Gary Hughes

Gary Hughes of Forney, Texas, passed away Dec. 22, 2003.

Gary was born June 1, 1958 and was a 1976 graduate of Charlotte. He was a member of the Forney School Board and the announcer for Forney High School football. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Hughes; son, Greg Hughes; daughter, Courtney Hughes; parents, Jerry and Sandy Hughes; sister, Laurie Chapman; several brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel in Sunnyvale, Texas, with Rev. Rick Lemons officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Suite 146, Des Plaines, IL 60018.

Lillian Genevieve Hughey

Lillian G. Hughey, age 94, of Onondaga, died Saturday, June 21, 2003. Born June 9, 1909 in Onondaga Township, the daughter of Floyd B. and Blanche (Goodnoe) Smith. Mrs. Hughey began her working career at the age of 16, working for Horner Woolen Mills, Heifetz Pickle Co. and Davidson Woolen Mills, all of Eaton Rapids. She received her High School GED in 1979 at the age of 70. Mrs. Hughey loved gardening, quilting, fishing and especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur in 1997.

Surviving are 5 children, Arthur (Denise) Hughey Jr. of Kentucky, Marlene (Bob) Colgan of Eaton Rapids, Max (Loyce) Hughey of Marshall, Carl (Linda) Hughey of Battle Creek and Donna (Allen ) Keller of Delton; 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren; brother, Leo Smith of Jackson and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 24th at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with burial following in the Onondaga Cemetery. For those desiring memorial gifts may be made to Heartland Hospice or to a charity of one’s choice, in memory of Lillian G. Hughey.

David Hunter

David Hunter, 46, of Charlotte, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003. Mr. Hunter was born April 10, 1956 in Charlotte, the son of Allen Hunter and Dorothy (Russow) Coplin.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy (Paul) Coplin of Sturgis; father Allen (Linda) Hunter of Parma; daughter, Jane Cole of Hillsdale; brother, Dale (Dorella) Hunter of St. Johns, and their children, Jennifer and Gale Hunter, Russ, C.J. and Nick Page; sister, Denise (Colby) Page of Charlotte and their children, Liz and Josh Cruz, and Odelia Sagredo Page.

Services were completed by Pray Funeral Home.

Marvin K. Jackson

Marvin Kendall Jackson, 79, of Charlotte, died Friday, March 28, 2003.

Mr. Jackson was born Aug. 29, 1923 in Fillmore, Ind., the son of Henry and Ethel (Ogle) Jackson. He was an accountant with IBM and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palmetto, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Smith) Jackson; two sons, Morris “Moe” (Cheryl) Jackson of Charlotte, and Brice (Jane) Jackson of Greencastle, Ind.; daughter, Patty (Melvin) Grimes of Russellville, Ind.; four grandchildren, Christina, Stacey, John, and Jeffrey; and brother, Harold (Lillian) Jackson of Bloomington, Ind.

An infant daughter, Brenda, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held March 31 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Robin Crouch officiating. A graveside committal service was held April 1 at Fillmore Cemetery in Fillmore, Ind.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
