Francis Kikendall

Francis Arthur “Corky” Kikendall, age 85, of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2002 at his residence following a long illness.

Born Aug. 2, 1917 in Dimondale, Michigan, the son of Arthur and Vesta (Brininstool) Kikendall. Corky was a graduate of Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1936, and served in the Army during World War II. Corky was a retired driver and ice cream maker for Miller’s Dairy in Eaton Rapids, and after retirement went to work for Carter’s IGA in Charlotte. He was a member of American Legion Post #0313 of Springport, a 10-year past president of the Eaton Rapids Conservation Club, a member of Griffith United Methodist Church and the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame, and a 4-H leader for many years in Eaton County.

Preceding him in death was a son, Kenneth Kikendall in 1962.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Ruth Mary (Egan) Kikendall; five children, Frances Penny (Thomas) Parsons, Georgia Marie (Robert) Stapleton, Charles Arthur Kikendall and Lois (David) Colestock, all of Eaton Rapids; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roger (Bethel) Kikendall of Eaton Rapids and Ronald (Joyce) Kikendall of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Aug. 16 from Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Jack Fugate officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery in Eaton Rapids.

For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Conservation Club in memory of Francis A. “Corky” Kikendall.

Carl M. King

Carl Max King, 75, of Forest Hill, La., formerly of Charlotte and Hastings, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002 in his residence.

Mr. King attended St. John Episcopal Church in Oakdale and was an active member of the Glenmora Friends of the Library. He was employed for more than 20 years as a credit manager for Hastings Aluminum Products and National Aluminum.

He is survived by his wife, Leola Perry King of Forest Hill, La.; two daughters, Terry Lee King of Mancelona and Mary King of Forest Hill, La.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Hortense King, and one sister, Caryle Lord.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date by Rush Funeral Home in Oakdale, La.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

David H. King

David H. King Sr., 42, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2002.

Mr. King was a native of Jacksonville, Fla., living most of his life there until moving to Moniac, Ga., in recent years. He was happiest under the hood of a car with a wrench in his hand. He will be missed by his family for his cooking and practical jokes.

He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Manzanillo King; his wife of 18 years, Judy King; son, David Jr.; daughters, Christy “Charlie” Boswell and Crystal King; brothers, Raymond, Thomas and Kenneth; sister, Sharron Waters and Debra Loun; granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Boswell; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

Funeral services were held May 13 at Town & Country Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Fla., with Chaplain Bob Loy officiating. Interment was at Riverside Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses.

Marian A. Kinzie

Marian A. Raths Kinzie, 92, of Charlotte, died Thursday, June 6, 2002.

Mrs. Kinzie was born Feb. 20, 1910 in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of Clifford and Florence (Chapman) Holley. She was a school teacher at the Grammar School and Eaton Rapids Public Schools, retiring in 1975. Mrs. Kinzie graduated from Detroit Central High School, earned a bachelor of science degree from Michigan Agriculture College in 1932 and a mater’s degree from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1952. She was a member of Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and its Naomi Circle. She was also a member of the Eaton County Retired Teachers Association and MSU Alumni Association.

She is survived by sons, Charles (Eleanor) Raths of Nashville, Tenn., Donald (Virginia) Raths of Downers Grove, Ill., and Herbert (Lisa) Raths of Charlotte; daughter, Martha Raths of Charlotte; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert John Raths in 1953.

Funeral services were held June 10 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia, Ontario.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.

Duane L. Klepper

Duane L. Klepper, 54, of Bellevue, died Monday, July 8, 2002 after a battle with cancer.

Mr. Klepper was born April 27, 1948 at Community Hospital in Battle Creek, the first son of Jean (Mapes) and Donald Klepper. He attended Bellevue High School, graduating in 1966 and going to work at Kellogg’s after graduation. He married Cindy Chase in January 1974. They had three children. Mr. Klepper was very proud of his family and all their accomplishments. He enjoyed hunting, golf and coin collecting. After retiring from Kellogg’s in 1999 with over 30 years of service, he went to work part-time at Gull Lake View Golf Course for two years.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cindy; sons, Troy of Florida and Benji of Bellevue; daughter, Rebecca of Bellevue; two sisters, Iva (Bill) McKeown of Battle Creek and Kay (Arthur) Woody of Charlotte; and two brothers, Walter (Marty) of Dowling and Donald of Battle Creek.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Klepper in 1984 and his mother Jean Klepper in 2001.

Memorial services were held July 11 at Henry Funeral Home in Battle Creek. Interment was at Floral Lawn Gardens in Battle Creek.

Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice.

Hellen B. Klont

Hellen B. (Page) Klont, 79, of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002 at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Greenlawn Campus Lansing.

Mrs. Klont was born Sept. 12, 1922 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Ellis and Alice (Fetter) Page. She was a graduate of Charlotte High School, attended Argubright Business College in Battle Creek and had been employed as a bookkeeper for Fowler’s Inc. in Charlotte.

She is survived by one son, Douglas (Linda) Klont of Eaton Rapids; two daughters, Denise (John) Geiger of Woodstock, Ga., and Barbara Klont of Birmingham; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerrit Klont on July 4, 1987.

At Mrs. Klont’s request, no visitation or funeral services were held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Robert W. Koyl

Robert W. Koyl, age 83 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, November 1, 2002 in Dimondale. He was born March 7, 1919 in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, the son of Clarence Leslie and Pearl Mae (McDowell) Koyl. Bob served four years with the 229th Division Army Signal Operations Company in Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He earned a BA and MA in Music Education (Voice and Instrumental) from the University of Illinois. He taught in Chicago Hgts., Paxton, and Lawrenceville, IL before coming to Eaton Rapids in 1956. Mr. Koyl was an educator in the Eaton Rapids Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1985. He taught K-12th grade band, and started High School Choir in 1959. Mr. Koyl also taught Alternative Education, Social Studies, and Math. He was the Choir Director for the First United Methodist Church for 34 years. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Glen, sister, Mildred Stenberg, niece, Patricia Stenberg and nephew Eugene Koyl.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Evangeline Vincent Koyl; children, George (Ida Shaker) Koyl of Goodrich, Eileen Koyl of New York, NY, David (Vicki) Koyl of Eaton Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Mark Shaker of Flint, Abigail (Gregg) Matheny of Lansing, Olivia, Hannah, Zion, and Shiloh Koyl all of Eaton Rapids; great granddaughter, Tianna Matheny; nephew, Jack (Marilyn) Stenberg and niece, Joyce Koyl.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 5th at 3:00 p.m. at the Rosehill Cemetery, and memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2002, 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Pastors Tom Evans, Dallas McFarland and W. Robert palmer officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the Music Dept. at the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church in memory of Robert W. Koyl.

Elizabeth M. Kruger

Elizabeth “Bette” Madeline Kruger, 84, of Grand Ledge, passed away Sunday evening, May 26, 2002 at her home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Kruger was born Oct. 7, 1917 in Grand Ledge, the daughter of the late Will and Myrtie (Howe) Kebler. She worked for many years in Lansing for Consumers Power Company, and after her marriage to Fred Kruger of Muir in 1945, they purchased the family farm in the area. As working partners, they ran a dairy and raised their family. Mrs. Kruger was an avid reader, piano player, concert goer, and until recent years, horseback rider. After raising her family she returned to work at Spartan Village School at Michigan State University, where she retired after 13 years.

She is survived by her husband, Fred; sister, Geneva Wiskemann of Lansing; daughters, Patricia (Derrill) Coger of Auburn and Suzanne (Gordon) Cornwell of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Marcella (Brook) Fisher of West Palm Beach, Fla., Stacey (Andrew) Hasse of Traverse City, James (Dulcie) Rice of Grand Ledge, Wesley (Sheri) Cornwell of Traverse City and Sarah Cornwell of Marquette; seven great-grandchildren, Andrew Cornwell, Nicholas Tafelsky, Maya Kedmi, Emily Hasse, Tyler Cornwell, Blake Fisher and Garrett Rice.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Vaughn Kebler.

Funeral services were held May 30 at Peters & Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge, with Rev. Lyle Heaton officiating. Interment was at Niles Cemetery in Eagle.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Devos Children’s Hospital of Grand Rapids or American Heart Association; envelopes are available at the funeral home.
