Betty A. Sherman

Betty Ann (Smith) Sherman, 67, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte, after a 24-year battle with multiple sclerosis.

Mrs. Sherman was born Sept. 27, 1934 at Valley Farms, the daughter of Jack and Florence (Proctor) Smith, and lived most of her life in Charlotte. She had been employed by Wrigley’s Market, Charlotte Public Schools and Hayes Green Beach Hospital, retiring due to poor health. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Eaton County MS Support Group, and had been active in the Eaton County Democratic Party. She was known as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and a friend whose strength and courage inspired many.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Kenyon Sherman; four children, Vickie (Larry) Gingrich and Kristy (Brian Sinclair) Kenyon, both of Charlotte, Sonya (Bob) Ghastin of Holt and Kirk (Sandra) Sherman of DeWitt; eight grandchildren, Brad and Blake Gingrich, Lindsey and Chelsea Ghastin, Tyler and Gabrielle Sherman, Brian Harag and Shelby Kenyon; two brothers, Marvin Smith of Vermontville and Andrew “Doc” Smith of Lansing; and two sisters, Rose Davids of George and Helen Casey of Dimondale.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jack Smith, and sister Florence Davids.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at First Lutheran Church, Charlotte, with Pastor Timothy Olson officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Mary Ann Sherman

Mary Ann Sherman, 52, of Charlotte, loving and dedicated wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend passed away Jan. 25.

Mary Ann was a graduate of Pewamo-Westphalia High School and attended Michigan State University. She attended Sisters of Christian Charity for two years while in high school and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte.

Surviving are her husband of 33 years, William Sherman of Charlotte; children, Scott Lee (Debra) Sherman of Battle Creek, William “Kim” Sherman of Vermontville, and Carolyn “Carrie” Marie (Matthew) Burns of Eaton Rapids; parents, Gerald and Caroline Piggott of Westphalia; siblings, Duane (Lorraine) Piggott of St. Johns, Alan (Patty) Piggott of Westphalia, Roy (Arlene) Piggott of Pewamo, Philip Piggott of St. Johns, Ginny (Duane) Weber of Westphalia, Judy Piggott of Pewamo, and Stan Piggott of Mulliken; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

The Mass of Christian burial was celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor Jan. 29 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Westphalia with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia.

Arrangements were handled by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.

Contributions may be made to the Children’s Leukemia Society.

Walter James Shiels

Walter James “Jim” Shiels, a long time writer, statistician, media rep. and author of eight manuscripts on auto racing for tracks in the central California area, passed away Dec. 23, 2002 from a long battle with colon cancer.

His condition was worsened by many additional medical problems that accompanied the cancer. Since developing Type II diabetes in 1988, which resulted in the loss of his left leg below the knee, he recently received the unpleasant news that the same would occur to this right leg, and that news was given to him on his birthday.

Mr. Shiels was born Dec. 21, 1943 in Charlotte, to parents Walter Earl and Beulah (Carey) Shiels. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1962 and continued to live in the area until 1973 when he relocated to California. After enjoying a full-time career in newspaper circulation form the age of 16 to 40, Jim decided in 1978 to take up the sport of auto racing in the only way he could, as a writer and statman for Stockton 99 Speedway. HE later assumed similar duties and responsibilities at Delta Speedway for 10 years and in 1995, at Altamonte Raceway Park.

He is survived by wife Jo Shiels of Snelling, caregiver and companion of 12 years; four sisters, Betty (late “Bub”) Rolfe of Eaton Rapids, Pat (Fred) Chapman of Missouri, Marilyn (Art) Fox of Charlotte and Mary Ann (Jim) Orrison of Florida; 54 nieces and nephews; two daughters, Suzanne (Henry) Frahm of Ukiah, Calif., and Tammy (David) Marlow; son, Robert Shiels of New Orleans; and grandchildren, Destiny, Daniel, Monica, David, Iona, Kenneth and John Marlow. He was preceded in death by his father Walter Earl in 1961, and his mother Beulah Shiels in 1971.

A memorial foundation fund is being set up at Bank of Stockton Carson Oaks Branch Ben Holt & Pacific Ave., Stockton, Ca. 95207 acct. #2242027409. Arrangements were under the direction of Stratford Evan Merced Funeral Chapel.

Gerald L. Shoup

Gerald L. Shoup, 86, of Nashville, died Monday, March 25, 2002 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.

Mr. Shoup was born Oct. 21, 1915 in Battle Creek, the son of Roy and Jessie (Webb) Shoup. He attended schools in Reading and Philadelphia, Pa. Mr. Shoup worked at American Marsh Pump in 1937. On Sept. 3, 1939 he married Jane Spark. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 and upon his discharge, settled in Urbandale. He moved to the Nashville area in 1950 and worked at Clark Equipment until his retirement in 1974. Mr. Shoup served on the planning commission for many years and had several hobbies, including working on clock and watches and making model steam engines. He was a self-taught woodcarver and played several musical instruments. He enjoyed summers at his cottage near Traverse City.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Shoup of Nashville; sons, David of Woodland and Steven (Brenda) of Nashville; daughter, Marilyn (Eric) Wright of Vermontville; brother, Orley (Betty) Gardner of Interlochen; sister-in-law, Rose Shoup of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents, Roy and Jessie (Webb) Shoup; stepfather, William Gardner; a granddaughter and a brother.

Services will be held Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville, with Rev. Alan McCrimmon officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Putnam Library. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville.

Archie E. Slocum

Archie Eugene “Gene” Slocum, 73, of Potterville, formerly of Belding and Cadillac, passed away Nov. 4, 2002 in Lansing. He retired as head custodian at Belding Public Schools and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He attended the Potterville Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara; sons, Stephen, Keven and Keith, all of Belding, and Mark (Toni) of Potterville; 16 grandchildren; brother, Howard (Renee) Slocum of Cadillac; and sister, Helen Snell of Cadillac.

Funeral services were held Nov. 7 at Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home in Grand Ledge, with Rev. Kirk Starkweather officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery.

Arlene L. “Peggy” Smith

Arlene L. “Peggy” Smith, age 80 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, April 6, 2002 after a long illness. She was born May 8, 1921 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Eugene and Edith (Sayles) Cambric. A life resident of Eaton Rapids, she had worked at the V.F.W. National Home and had retired from the Eaton Stamping Co. both in Eaton Rapids. Preceding her in death were her husband, Richard Smith, in 1976 and a brother, Charles Cambric. Peggy was a member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and her home and garden. She enjoyed a very special friendship and relationship with her best friend, Mr. Daryl Arntz.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Janet (Robert) Lee, Charlene Smith, and Patty Harrison all of Eaton Rapids; 5 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be Saturday, April 20, 2002 at the Eaton Rapids Senior Center at 201 ½ Grand Street, Eaton Rapids, at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Stephen Klink of the Community Christian Church, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Eaton Rapids Senior Center or the Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Arlene L. “Peggy” Smith. Arrangements were made through the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Bruce F. Smith

Bruce F. Smith, age 71 of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, January 1, 2002 at his residence. He was born December 9, 1930 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Louis and Opal (Baker) Smith. Bruce retired after 37 years of service with Consumers Power as a Supervisor with the Gas Line Department. He was also a former secretary and 2nd Vice President of Consumers Power Local Union #123 in Lansing, a member of the Community Christian Church in Eaton Rapids, and was involved with Meals on Wheels in the area. Bruce grew up in Eaton Rapids and was known and loved by many, he faced many challenges this last year with courage and optimism. He enjoyed R.V. travels with his family and friends, woodworking, bowling, fishing, golfing and hunting. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Preceding him in death were his parents; grandchildren, Daniel Thomas Smith and Amy Michelle Smith; sister, Elizabeth Pettit.

Surviving are his wife of 51 year and love of his life, Betty; 3 children, Tena (Doug) Park, Tom (Roxann) Smith and Ricky (Deb) Smith all of Eaton Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Trisha (Paul) Brady, Paul Park, Bill Smith, Mike Smith, Elisabeth Smith and Steve Smith; great-granddaughter, Kathleen Brady; 3 brothers, Louie (Jerry) Smith of Manistee, George (Shirley) Smith of Owosso and Harold Rose of Dimondale; sister, Linda (Cliff) Kevinen of St. Paul, MN; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 4th, from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were Jim Smith, Eric Smith, Mike Pettit, Pat O’Neill, Jamie Bell and Tim Morrow. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Rapids Community Christian Church in memory of Bruce F. Smith.

Carl Smith Jr.

Carl Smith Jr. of Potterville died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002.

Mr. Smith was born June 11, 1930, the son of Carl and Sylvia Smith Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joyce; children, Anne (Allen) Aseltine, David (Grace) Smith, Brian Smith, Jill (Philip) Roehl, Judy (Larry) Zakora, Gary Smith (special friend Karen Vallance), Debbie (Todd) Mannor, Jerry (Nikki) Smith; 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Myles (Ruth Anna) Smith; sister, Alice Mills; mother-in-law, Vernie Edington; brother-in-law, Clyde (Carol) Edington; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Aug. 8 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Tom Peters officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Special Day Camps for children with cancer in Lambertville, Mich.

Dorothy M. Smith

Dorothy Marie Smith, 81, of Grand Ledge, passed away Oct. 21, 2002.

Mrs. Smith was born July 18, 1921 in Ionia, the daughter of Ferdinand and Augusta Tafel. On Aug. 28, 1948 she married Raymond Smith, making their home in the Grand Ledge area. A devoted wife and mother, she was a full-time homemaker and worked along side her husband, farming their land and helping tend their livestock. Mrs. Smith was a devoted Christian all her life, attending the Lutheran Church in Ionia. In her later years, she often attended with her husband the Oneida Gospel Church in Grand Ledge.

She is survived by two daughters, Annette Rae (Lester) Shugars of Orleans and Barbara Jean (Greg) Gibson of Vermontville; four grandchildren, Andrew (Joey) Gibson of Cynthiana, Ky., Tabatha (Gene) Baker of Charlotte, and Danny and Justin Shugars of Orleans; two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Madison Gibson of Cynthiana, Ky.; one sister, Anita (Larry) Tempe of Chicago, Ill.; and one brother, William (Loraine) Tafel of Florida.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Raymond on Sept. 21, 2002; brothers and sisters, Margaret, Edward, Evelyn, Florence, Lorraine, Ferdinand Jr., Nora, Raymond, Esther, Gerald, Arthur and Richard.

Funeral services were held Oct. 24 at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Belding.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
