Joyce O. Houseman

Joyce O. Houseman, 80, of Bellevue, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 at Heartland Health Care in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Houseman was born Oct. 1, 1921 in Bellevue to Joseph and Olive (Evans) Nicholson, and graduated from Bellevue High School in 1938. She was a legal secretary for an Ann Arbor attorney for 15 years and retired as secretary to the president of Economy Baler Co. in 1976. She married Raymond Houseman on March 23, 1940 at her parent’s home in Bellevue; he died Oct. 31, 1998. She was a member of the Bellevue Chatter Club and Battle Creek Moose Lodge, and enjoyed playing the organ and oil painting. Mrs. Houseman also enjoyed her nieces and nephews and going to their cabin at Lake City. She attended the Bellevue Alumni Banquet in May 2000 with her three sisters.

She is survived by sisters, Jean LaPoint of Lake City, June (Warren) Johnston of Marble Falls, Texas, and Joan Ruell of Haslett; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Barbara Nicholson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Nicholson, and brother-in-law, Leslie Houseman.

Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, in Bellevue. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund, Humane Society-Calhoun Area, or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sara Delite (Tolleson) Hovorka

Sara Delite (Tolleson) Hovorka, age 68, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died May 8, 2002 in Leesburg, Florida. She was born in Rainsville, Alabama and was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Hovorka Kantor and her parents William and Ethel Tolleson.

She is survived by her husband, Milton, of The Villages, Florida; son, Milton Jay (Louanna) of Charlotte; daughter, Angela (Ted) Levendoski of Holt; son-in-law Joseph Kantor of Minnesota; and seven dear grandchildren.

Mrs. Hovorka moved to Florida in 2001. Services were conducted in Lady Lake, Florida.

Paul J. Hudson

Paul (Skip) Joseph Hudson, Jr., 64, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002.

Mr. Hudson was born Sept. 25, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Paul Earl Hudson and Mary Portia (Hutting) Hudson. He grew up in the Lansing area and was employed at B.O.C. in Lansing until his retirement in November 1999. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Charlotte, U.A.W. Local 652, and a driver for the Meals of Wheels program. He was interested in photography and genealogy.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; son, Alex of Charlotte; daughters, Mary (Pete) Hudson-Mack of Holland, Chris (Timothy) Pratt of Grand Rapids, Stephanie (Scott) Hall of Grand Rapids, and Carrie (Rae) Dennison; five grandchildren, Lauren, Ethan and Ryan Pratt, and Ellis and Tate Mack; sister, Janet (Bob) Schuster of Little River, S.C.; brothers, Dick of Greenville, Bill of Sun City, Fla., John (Debbie) of Cadillac, and Mike (Carolyn) and Martin (Judy), both of Lansing.

Rosary service was held Dec. 17 at Pray Funearl Home in Charlotte. The funeral mass was held Dec. 18 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Fr. Denis Spitzley as celebrant. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Shirley A. Hughes

Shirley Arletta (Bellows) Hughes, 78, of Charlottesville, Va., passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002 at her residence.

Mrs. Hughes was born March 1, 1924, the daughter and eldest child of Arthur and Mabel (King) Bellows of rural Eaton Rapids. Mrs. Hughes is a daughter of the American Revolution and a member of the National Society of the Daughter of the American Revolution, having been accepted into membership April 12, 1958 into Thomas Lee Chapter in Virginia. On Aug. 8, 1988 she was accepted into membership of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, Shenandoah Chapter, Virginia. Because of the importance of those she loved, she devoted her life to the preservation and accuracy of her family’s lineage and leaves a rich heritage to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Hughes and former husband, Fred Smoke; two children, William (and Jing) Smoke of Pace, Fla., and L. Kathy (David) Pelino of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren, Amy Smoke, Stacie (Freddie) Maldonado, Mary J. Smoke, Matthew (Kristine) Pelino and Meredith Pelino; six great-grandchildren, Justen, Alyssa and Shaina Maldonado, Ethan Pelino, Cody and Jacob Pelino; two brothers, George (Martha) Bellows, and Harry Bellows brother of Eaton Rapids; two nephews, Allan Bellows and Greg Bellows; and three nieces, Jenny Bellows, Susan Heyboer and Debbie Charles.

Darlene Hull

Darlene (Crane) Hull, 61, of Nashville, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.

Mrs. Hull was born Feb. 8, 1943 in Leslie, the daughter of Forrest and Mary (Stidd) Madison. She attended area schools and graduated from Dansville High School in 1960. She worked as a nurse’s aide, provided child care and was employed at Emery’s Adult Foster Care Home in Vermontville. Mrs. Hull was a member of the Nashville Nazarene Church. She enjoyed birds and owned several parrots. She liked socializing, crocheting, crafting and traveling to Holland for the Tulip Festival and to Frankenmuth.

She is survived by her husband, Philip Hull of Nashville; sons, Chris (Janice) Crane of Nashville and John Crane of Hastings; sister, Betty Jordan; 19 grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Mary Madison.

Services were held May 17 at Kalamo Methodist Church, with Pastor Steve Olmstead officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville.

Eric Jon Hunt

Eric Jon Hunt, of Milan, formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 31, died Monday, July 8, 2002, in Milan. Eric was born October 13, 1970 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Jon Gilbert and Thelma Marie (McNinch) Hunt. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1989, and was employed with Huron Valley Center as a Corrections Officer. Eric loved to ride his motorcycle and hunting. He was preceded in death by his father, Jon.

Surviving are his wife, Karri (Vargo) Hunt of Saline; mother, Thelma “Teri” Hunt of Eaton Rapids; brother, Kirk (Lisa) Hunt of Grand Rapids; sister, Pamela Marie Hyde of Anoka, MN; half brother, Jonathan Hunt; half sister, Courtney Hunt.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 12, 2002 at the Herring Lake Baptist Church in Frankfort. Interment followed at the Blain Twp. Cemetery. Casket bearers were Kirk Hunt, Rod Hunt, Charles Hunt and Brian Hunt. The family was served by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Alice Huntoon

Alice Huntoon, 72, of Charlotte, died Sunday, March 31, 2002.

Mrs. Huntoon was born Jan. 3, 1930 in Detroit, the daughter of Fred and Emaline (Magoon) Janes. She worked at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility for 17 years.

She is survived by her husband, Claude “Bill” Huntoon; daughter, Linda Stubblefield of Charlotte; sons, Ted of Charlotte and William (Heather) of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Angela (Marc) Gonzales, Missy Stubblefield, and Jacque and Zachary Houseman; and great-grandchildren, Morgan and Marissa Gonzales, and Thomas Copeland.

Funeral services were held April 3 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Bill McKay officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Maurice J. Hyatt

Maurice J. Hyatt of East Tawas, (formerly of Eaton Rapids) MI, went to sleep in death on September 12, 2002 at 73 years of age. Morris was a retired tool and die employee with General Motors in Lansing. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and all who knew him.

He was a beloved husband for 53 years to Joan Lee Hyatt; dear father of Steven (Diana) Hyatt of Eaton Rapids, Linda (Dave) Siple of Eaton Rapids and Tamara (William) Otis of Charlotte; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; sister, Barbara Norton of Eaton Rapids.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 21, 2002 at the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah’s Witness, 7798 Bellevue Hwy., Eaton Rapids. Arrangements were entrusted to the Hale Chapel of the Buresh-Bennett Funeral Home (989) 728-2571.
