Lorene Todd

Lorene Todd, 94, of Charlotte, formerly of Toledo, died Nov. 10, 2002 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte.

She was born March 10, 1908 to Benjamin and Esther (Crane) McNinch in Litchfield. She graduated from Litchfield High School and attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music, studying the organ and piano. She worked as a supervisor at the State Home in Coldwater and at the Adrian Girls Training School. Lorene married Orris Todd in 1928; he died in 1969. She enjoyed traveling, bowling and sewing.

She is survived by daughter, Patricia (Charles) Larder of Bellevue; granddaughter, Judy Larder of Kalamazoo; grandson, Michael Larder of Toledo; and great-grandson, Brian Larder of Newport, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister. A committal will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Litchfield at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Helen G. Tooker

Helen G. Tooker, absent from the body, present with the Lord. Helen went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 14, 2002, at the age of 89. Helen was born to Charles and Mertie (Alderson) Whipp on January 8, 1913 near Eaton Rapids. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Earl in 1975, sisters Ilah (Charles) Marolf of Florida, Glenna Whipp of Florida and brother Robert Whipp of Holt.

This very loving mother is survived by her daughter Carol Ottney of Eaton Rapids; sons Dale (Judy) Tooker of Arizona and Gerald (Sharon) Tooker of Eaton Rapids; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial will follow at the Markham Cemetery in Delhi Township. Visitation will be this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility where she received wonderful care for the past year.

Orpha Tower

Orpha Tower, 92, of Charlotte, formerly of Marion, died Saturday, April 20, 2002 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

Mrs. Tower was born March 30, 1910 in Cadillac, the daughter of Henry and Iva (Porter) Barhitte. She lived in Flint for several years before moving to her farm in Marion. Mrs. Tower dearly enjoyed her last seven years at Kiwanis Manor in Charlotte. She liked spending time with her friends at Kiwanis Manor and the monthly birthday dinner celebrations, as well as bingo parties. It also gave her great pleasure to crochet dresses for the Christmas dolls.

She is survived by her daughter, June Umbarger of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Terry (Carla) Cleveland of Bancroft, Randy (Christine) Cleveland of Kaycee, Wyo., Candice Cleveland of Grand Ledge, Sheri (Bill) Charron of Harrison and Rick (Denise) Cleveland of Washington Township; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Tower; son, Leo; two sisters, Opal and Oma; and a brother, Vere.

Funeral services were held April 24 at Fosnaught Funeral Home in Marion. Interment was at Middle Branch Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kiwanis Manor.

Nylla A. Trachsel

Nylla Allyn Trachsel, 77, of Charlotte, died Dec. 10, 2002.

Mrs. Trachsel was born March 29, 1925 in Charlotte, the daughter of Gerald and Thelma (Miller) Parish.

She is survived by sons, Robert Proctor of Gaylord and Robin Trachsel of Durand; daughter, Sharon Bonnier of Sault Ste. Marie; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Trachsel in 1988. Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Leota Hisler Trainor

Leota Hisler Trainor, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 13, 2002. She was 97 years old and had been a resident of Sun Terrace Facility in Sun City Center for a few months. Prior to this she resided at the Coach House Mobile Home Park in Palmetto, Florida for over 30 years. She was born September 6, 1905 in Schoolcraft, Michigan, the daughter of Frank and Patti (Calvert) Schroth. When a young girl, her parents moved to Eaton County where she later met and married Floyd Hisler in 1926. They lived on a farm on Springport Road from 1937 until Floyd preceded her in death in 1969. She married Kenneth Trainor in 1973, and he preceded her in death in 1990. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two sister and two grandsons. She was a member of Palmview First Baptist Church in Palmetto, Florida.

Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn (Richard) McCormick of Sun City Center, Florida, Norma (Fred) Harkness of Lakeland, Florida, and a son Howard (Dorothy) Hisler of Eaton Rapids, 14 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date, with burial in Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Mable May Trosper

Mable May Trosper, age 87 of Eaton Rapids, loving mother and grandmother, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 8, 2002. She was born September 22, 1914 in Greenfield, Tennessee, the daughter of W.J. and Ivy (Grooms) Carlton. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. Her loving husband, Leonard, preceded her in death in 1985, after 52 years of marriage. Her greatest love was being surrounded by her family and friends.

She is survived by two children, daughter, Peggy (Vic) White and son, James (Kay) Trosper of Eaton Rapids; 15 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Woodruff of Martin, Tennessee, and 3 sisters-in-law, Modean Berryhill of Grand Ledge, Mae Johnson and Fay Gray of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews. She had so much love to give and her smile and laughter will always be etched in our hearts. Also preceding her in death were son, Charles Lee; daughter, Patsy May; grandson, James Trosper and 13 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at 11 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tom Evans, officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. A special thanks to the staff at Martin Luther Home in Holt for the wonderful care.

LaGreta G. Tuckey

LaGreta G. Tuckey, 78, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002.

Mrs. Tuckey was born Oct. 2, 1923 in Charlotte, the daughter of Gerald and Hilda (Snyder) Strickland.

She is survived by sons, Gary Rochester of Grand Ledge and Lance Rochester of Colorado; daughter, Linnea (Steven) Bishop of Grand Ledge; stepson, Zahn Tuckey Jr. of Florida; stepdaughter, Mary Tuckey of Dimondale; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Zahn Tuckey and stepson, Joe Tuckey.

Private family services were held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Darwin “Dar” Umbarger

Darwin “Dar” Umbarger, age 51 of Eaton Rapids, died June 1, 2002 as courageously and bravely as he lived his life. Darwin was born August 16, 1950 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Kenneth and Sarah Umbarger. He lived and worked in the area his entire life, retiring June 29, 2001 after 31 years at General Motors in Lansing. Dar was a member, past president, vice president and board member of the Capital City Old Car Club. He was an avid old car lover, collector of old gas pump globes, gas pumps and other petroleum collectibles. He was also a member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church. He was a devoted family man, and nothing was more important to him than the ones he loved.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Maggi” Umbarger; son, Kevin Umbarger of Lansing daughter, Kimberley (Michael) Murray of Eaton Rapids; step-son, Greg Trine and his friend Tia Ott of Eaton Rapids; step-daughter, Terralynn (Timothy) Lake of Marshall; granddaughter, Amanda Murray; step-grandchildren, Paige and Cory Gordeneer, Abby and Cameron Lake, and Brandi Morrow. He is also survived by his mother, Sarah Umbarger of Charlotte; sisters, Sandy Southward of Charlotte and Penny (David) Louth of Lansing; brother, Jeff (Kaye) Umbarger of Dimondale; mother of his children Edna Umbarger of Eaton Rapids and his best buddy, Spinner. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Umbarger in 2000.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2002 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. William Sanders and Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment will follow at Brickyard Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Youth Facility Children’s Trust Fund in Charlotte or the Prostate Fund for Cancer Research – College of Natural Sciences.

Alice L. VanBlarcom

Alice L. VanBlarcom, 87, of Vermontville, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 at her home.

Mrs. VanBlarcom was born Sept. 21, 1914 in Sunfield Township, the daughter of Ralph and Evva (Fogle) Wright. She married Claude VanBlarcom on March 25, 1939. Mrs. VanBlarcom was a member of the Vermontville United Methodist Church and the Bismark Women’s Fellowship. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting and gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Claude; daughter, Marabeth (Stan) Graham; grandsons, Travis and Trent Graham; sister, Lillian Patterson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were held Jan. 7 at Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with Rev. Jeff Bowman of the Vermontville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Sunfield Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Travis and Trent Graham. Memorial donations may be made to the Bismark Community, Maple Valley Scholarship Fund, or the Vermontville United Methodist Church, in care of Rosier Funeral Home, P.O. Box 36, Sunfield, MI 48890.
