Helen M. Kenefick

Helen May Kenefick, 92, of Charlotte, formerly of Detroit, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001.

Mrs. Kenefick was born July 8, 1909 in Chelsea, Mass., the daughter of Fred and Elizabeth (Mienhardt) Mundt. She retired as a clerk from F.W. Woolworth Company.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frank Kenefick; son, Frank Kenefick of Peoria, Ariz.; daughter, Judy Telfer of Charlotte; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by brothers, Fred, Gus, Harold, Frank and Herbert Mundt, and a sister, Hazel Hunter.

Funeral services were held Dec. 21 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Noel Hall-Niemann officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or Barry-Eaton District Health Department Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

F. Evelyn Kiessling

F. Evelyn Kiessling, 89, of Olivet, died May 14, 2001.

Mrs. Kiessling was born March 4, 1912 in Fremont, Ohio, the daughter of Oscar and Lottie Stierwalt.

She is survived by son, Richard (Brigitte) Kiessling of Olivet; one grandson, Jeff (Lisa) Kiessling; one great-granddaughter, Logan; brothers, Don Stierwalt of Fremont, Ohio, and Jack (Harriet) Stierwalt of Columbus, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by husband, George; granddaughter, Jennifer; and sister, Mildred.

Memorial services were held May 17 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Carol Spangenburg officiating. Interment was at Greenlawn Cemetery, Tiffin, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Ruth A. Kikendall

Ruth A. Kikendall, age 90 of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, August 20, 2001 in Charlotte. Ruth was born June 19, 1911 in Walton Twp., Eaton County, MI the daughter of Scott Alvin and Dana Leal (Conklin) Halsey. Mrs. Kikendall taught school in the Spicerville and Bradford Country schools. She was an active member of the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church. Ruth enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She crocheted doilies, afghans, and baby clothing. She played the piano all her life and enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. Gardening and cooking were some of her talents and she spent many years camping with her family. In 1990, Mrs. Kikendall was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Walter; 4 brothers, Edward, Allen, Russell and Dana Halsey; 2 sisters, Jane Evans and Mary Ida Halsey.

Surviving are her daughter, Rosemary (Dick) Allen of Eaton Rapids; 2 sons, Robert Allen Kikendall, Terry Lee (Penny) Kikendall both of Eaton Rapids; 4 grandchildren, Mark David (Sheila) Allen, Laura Jane (Curt) Gamsay, Eric Michael Kikendall, Daniel James Kikendall; 5 great-grandchildren, Alicia Rose Gamsay, Curt Douglas Gamsay II, Wyatt James Allen, Justin William Kikendall, Marcy Jean Burch; brother, Fred Halsey of Eaton Rapids; sister Alice (Ike) Pelton of Onondaga; 3 sisters-in-law, Jean Halsey, Lois Halsey, Mary Kikendall; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 24, 2001 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Carl Barrett officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church in memory of Ruth A. Kikendall.

Harold G. Kimmel

Harold George Kimmel, 94, of Bellevue, died July 19, 2001 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.

Mr. Kimmel was born Jan. 6, 1907 to Fred and Cora Bell (Shaw) Kimmel in Charlotte. He worked as a supervisor at Wilcox-Gay Corporation in Charlotte and at the Baker Chair Factory in Grand Rapids. He was also a business owner in the Charlotte and Bellevue area. Mr. Kimmel married Patricia Lagios on May 17, 1952 in Charlotte; she died Feb. 10, 1993. He enjoyed woodworking and remodeling.

He is survived by a son, Robert of Charlotte; daughter, Larry. Graveside services were held at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, with Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice Care. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Alice M. King

Alice M. King, 89, formerly of Caledonia and Vermontville, died Sunday, June 3, 2001 at Carvath Village in Middleville.

Mrs. King was born Sept. 15, 1911 in Caledonia, the daughter of John and Harriet (Heintz) Smith. She was raised in the Caledonia area and attended Caledonia schools, graduating in 1930. She then continued her education at Western State College in Kalamazoo in 1931. She married Kenneth King on April 11, 1932 in Caledonia. The couple lived on their 40-acre Caledonia farm, where they raised seven children. In 1963, Mrs. King began working at Gehl Restaurant in Caledonia until moving to their 30-acre farm in Vermontville. She was a life member of the Eastern Star #97 of Caledonia and the Ladies Auxiliary Post 8260 of the VFW in Nashville. She was known to many at the VFW as “Ma King.” She enjoyed working VFW suppers and playing bingo.

She is survived by sons, Richard of Lexington, Ky., James (Beverly) of New Orleans, La., Peter (Diane) of Centerville, Tenn., and John (Audrey) of St. Joseph; daughters, Karolyn (Raymond) Blocher of Woodland and Joan (Jim) Bode of Newaygo; 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Calvin and Vera Brawer of Alaska, Mich.; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; a son, Charles; a grandson, Michael; and two brothers. Services were held June 6 at Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville, with Rev. Ben Herring officiating. Interment was at the Alaska Cemetery, Alaska, Mich. Memorial contributions may be made to Barry Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.

Helen L. King

Helen L. King, 83, of Potterville, died July 2, 2001 at the St. Lawrence Dimondale Center after a long illness.

Mrs. King was born April 11, 1918 in South Haven, the daughter of Don and Ida (Zessin) Youngs. Mrs. King was a life member of the VFW Post 6034 in Potterville for many years, and was a member of the American Legion in Dimondale.

She is survived by son, John King; daughter, Sally Clarke of Wellston; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Carl (Beth) Youngs of Charlotte and Charles (Marjorie) Youngs of Potterville; brother-in-law, Robert Ray of Sunfield; and nieces, nephew, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dale E. King in 1973, granddaughter Lori Beth Clarke in 1996, nephew Ray Youngs in 1996, great nephew Don Youngs in 1995, sisters Audrey Estep in 1996 and Frances Ray in 2001.

Funeral services were held July 6 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Tom Peters officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

June King

June King, 87, of Charlotte, passed away Aug. 27, 2001 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, after a brief but difficult illness.

Mrs. King was born June 9, 1914 to Ben and Sarah (Taylor) Butler. She enjoyed a very active life including deer hunting, turkey hunting, fishing, boating, playing cards, gardening, canning and spending time with her many friends and relatives. She was a dynamic person and will be missed very much by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. In her younger days, she was an avid bowler and worked in the health care field in Detroit. She and her husband also owned King’s Bar in Dexter for 21 years.

She is survived by son, Randy (Adele) King of Pinckney; granddaughters, Michelle (Brooke) Plantz of Ann Arbor and Stephanie King of Jenison; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Bill) Butler of Grand Ledge, Wanda (Phil) Butler of Lansing and Myrtle (Paul) King of Glendale, Ariz.; nieces and nephews including Vivian (Donald) Schultz and Connie (Jim) Garrison of Charlotte; many great-nieces and nephews including Rachael (Scott) McLane, Andrea Ostrander and Cana Garrison.

She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend for 39 years, Richard in March 2000; her parents; brothers, Bill, Phil and Tom; and sister, Marion (Bill) Wright.

Funeral services were held Aug. 31 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Todd McLane officiating. Interment was at Center Eaton Cemetery, Charlotte.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

Neva C. King

Neva C. King, 92, of Bellevue, died Aug. 24, 2001 at Tendercare in Marshall.

Mrs. King was born June 11, 1909 in Bellevue, the daughter of Henry and Alma (Garms) Shipp. Her family were pioneers in Bellevue, immigrating from Germany. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1927 and from Western State Teachers College. She taught in several one-room schools, and then for the Bellevue Public Schools. She married Merle King on Sept 2, 1934; he died Jan. 24, 1978. She was a member of the 20th Century Club, Bellevue United Methodist Church, Esther Circle, Bellevue Historical Society, Eaton County retired teachers, and several community bridge clubs. She enjoyed her family, her grandchildren, flower gardening, making cookies, spending time at Wall Lake, knitting, entertaining and playing cards.

She is survived by daughter, Jean King of Marshall; son, Robert King of Crossville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, and fiver great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by twin brothers George and Frederick Shipp.

Funeral services were held Aug. 27 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Mary J. Kiplinger

Mary Jane Kiplinger, 80, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001 after an extended illness. Mrs. Kiplinger was born June 5, 1921 in Charlotte, the daughter of Otis and Helen (Rulison) Carman, and lived most of her life in Charlotte. She was a 1939 graduate of Charlotte High School, and had been employed as children’s registrar in Eaton County Probate Court for 15 years, and at Owens-Illinois Glass Co. for 10 years. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and its Deborah Circle, served as a Red Cross volunteer at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, was a member of the Charlotte OES #218 and an avid knitter.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert Kiplinger; daughter, Judith (Duane) Vernon of Lansing; son, Harold Charles (Kathleen-Pearson) Kiplinger of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren, JoAnn (Thomas) Klein, Mary Jane Botsford, Amy Fox, Daniel Charles (Melinda) Kiplinger, Kristine Marie Kiplinger and Michael John Kiplinger; three step-grandchildren, Richard (Marie) Vernon, Nancy (Thomas) Olenski and Mary Jo (Perry) Paquette; and 10 great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Sarah and Emily Klein, Douglas and Dean Vernon, Erica, Ryan, Brooke and Matthew Olenski and Sydney Paquette.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Duane Carman. Memorial services were held Nov. 5 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saladin Shrine Foundation. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Kristin Marie Kleehammer

Kristin Marie Kleehammer of Eaton Rapids, age 2 years and 10 months, died at her home on Wednesday, June 13, 2001. She was born August 19, 1998, the daughter of Edward and Judith (Rust) Kleehammer. Kristin had attended and completed the Eaton Intermediate School Districts, “Early On Program”.

Surviving are her parents, Edward and Judy Kleehammer of Eaton Rapids; brothers, Jacob and Michael Kleehammer of Eaton Rapids; grandparents, George and Donna Rust Sr. of Eaton Rapids, Willard Kleehammer of New Orleans, LA, Carolyn Kleehammer of Kalkaska; great-grandparents, Mildred Frydel of Kalkaska, and Rachel Glenellen Eva of Lansing; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16th, from the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Scott Boles officiating. Memorial gifts may be made to the Eaton Intermediate School District, Early On Program, in memory of Kristin M. Kleehammer. Arrangements were made by the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
