Melva E. Minnie

Melva Elizabeth Minnie, age 76, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday afternoon, August 12, 2001 at Eaton Rapids Medical Center after a short illness. She was born April 10, 1925 at the family farm house in Brockway Township. She was the daughter of the late William and Grace Phelps Dudley. Melva was a 1943 Yale High School graduate and lived most of her life in Yale until 1995 when she moved to Eaton Rapids to be close to her daughters and grandchildren. She enjoyed activities at both the Yale and Eaton Rapids Senior Center.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Ann and Ron Quinn and Sharon and Pete Benton; grandchildren, Ryan and Bradley Quinn and Brooke and Payton Benton; sister and brother-in-law Lucille and Glenn Fletcher Sr. of Lewiston; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Fran Dudley of Florida; brother-in-law Robert and June Minnie of Yale and a sister-in-law Ann Minnie of California. Melva was also loved and will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husbands, George Bartow and Richard Minnie and siblings, Virginia, Harold and Kenneth Dudley.

A funeral ceremony in appreciation of the life, family and friends of Melva was celebrated on Thursday, August 16 at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Yale. Rev. Jack Allen, pastor of Yale United Methodist Church officiated with committal in Elmwood Cemetery, Yale. Memorials are suggested to Eaton Rapids Senior Center.

Dorothy I. Mitchell

Dorothy I. Mitchell, 87, of Bellevue, died Friday, April 20 at Hilltop Manor in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Mitchell was born July 13, 1913 in Brookfield Township, Eaton County, to Miles and Mina (Lamb) Hooper. She attended the Butterfield School in Olivet. She married Vincent Mitchell July 5, 1930; he died Feb. 18, 1994. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church, and a life member of the United Methodist Church Women and Rachel Circle. She enjoyed cooking, especially baking cookies.

She is survived by daughters, Mona Stanley of Battle Creek and Beverly Mitchell of Olivet; son, LaMoin Mitchell of Nashville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brother, Rowland Hooper; sisters, Bethel Imes, Lois Carpenter, Mildred Shrontz, Ruth Sherman and Genevive Perry.

Services were held April 23 at Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue United Methodist Church.

J. Ernest Mitchell

J. Ernest “Mitch” Mitchell, 83, of Charlotte, died June 18, 2001.

Mr. Mitchell was born Sept. 5, 1917 in Littleton, Colo., the son of J. Ernest and Nellie (Gill) Mitchell. He worked at Dow Chemical Company in Midland. During World War II, he worked on the synthetic rubber program, and then served in the Physical Research Lab. He was assistant manager of the Plastics Department and then served with Economic Evaluation. He had also been general manager of Inorganics and Solvent and director of Functional Materials. He retired as director of Corporate Planning in 1981. Mr. Mitchell served as president of the Dow Foundation for six years. In 1968, he was selected as an outstanding engineering alumnus of the University of Denver, and was listed in Who’s Who in Finance and Industry. He served on the Midland Planning Commission and was a member of St. John Episcopal Church of Midland, the Midland Country Club, the Lakes Club of Sun City, Ariz., Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, numerous scientific and business publications and the Midland Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty; son, John Mitchell of Lansing; daughter, Shirley Potts of Sun City, Ariz.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Private family services have been held. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan or the National Parkinson’s Foundation. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Inc., Charlotte.

John C. Moncrief Sr.

John Carl “Jack” Moncrief Sr., 59, of Charlotte, died Friday, March 9, 2001.

Mr. Moncrief was born June 11, 1941 in Salem, N.J., the son of Daniel and Mary (Schmidt) Moncrief.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Deborah Mary (Ray) Fluegeman; granddaughters, Jessica, Stephanie and Danielle; mother, Mary (Merlin) Guilford; brothers, William (Joanne) Moncrief of North Carolina, Daniel (Judy) Moncrief of Fennville; sisters, Anna (Jim) Mathis-Mullins of Nashville, Katherine (Jerry) McCormick of Maine, Ruth (Gary) Cole of Escanaba, Kay (Carroll) Cole of Charlotte; brothers-in-laws, Charles (Caron) Brown of Hayesville, N.C., David (Bev) Brown of Baltimore, Md.; one stepbrother and three stepsisters; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1972; and sons, John Carl Moncrief Jr. 1965 and John Daniel Moncrief in 1991.

Funeral services were held March 13 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Jeff Brown officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte.

James E. Montross

James E. Montross, age 56 of Daytona Beach, FL formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, September 10, 2001 in Daytona Beach. Jim was born January 14, 1945 in Charlotte, MI, the son James Edward and Josephine Alice (DeFrates) Montross. He was a former employee with the Motor Wheel in Lansing and Robinson Bike Shop in Daytona Beach. James was a Vietnam veteran and a member of the Army Honor Guard. He was preceded in death by his 2 brothers, Billy Lee and Jerry Allen.

Surviving are his sister, Janet (Claude “Skip”) Murray, Jr. of Eaton Rapids; 2 nieces, Michelle (Ken) Murray-Brochu of Commerce, MI and Rene Murray- Nobert of Jackson.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2001, 11 a.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association in memory of James Montross.

David Daniel (Danny) Moore

David Daniel (Danny) Moore, age 35 of Eaton Rapids, died December 23, 2000. He has climbed the stairway to Heaven, after battling Bronchial Asthma all of his life. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1984. Dan loved nature and enjoyed hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors.

He had a big heart and left behind many who loved him – his mother, Patricia Miller; stepfather, Bernie Miller; father, David ‘Bud” Moore; sister, Jennifer (David) McCormick; grandparents, Evelyn (Alonzo-deceased); Nieces, Tricia, Emily, and Allison; nephews, Kevin Jr., Tyler, Ashton, and Devin; several aunts, uncles, cousins and beloved dog, Dodge.

Memorial services were held December 28, 2000 at Chapel In The Pines Funeral Home with Rev. Erwin Robertson of Capitol City Baptist Church officiating.

Raymond C. Moore

Raymond D. Moore, 92, of Charter House, Rochester, MN, died Jan. 8, 2001 at the Charter House Health Care Center, Rochester.

Mr. Moore was born Dec. 12, 1908 in Ada. He attended Michigan State College for Agriculture and Applied Sciences in East Lansing for two years. In 1934, he moved to Minnesota and was employed by Montgomery Ward in St. Paul before transferring to Rochester in 1942. On July 6, 1940, he married Edna Priebe in Adrian. From 1944-45, he served with the 575th Automatic Weapons Battalion, 3rd Division, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. After his discharged, he and Eddie Klopp opened World Travel Bureau. In 1947, he became the first officially appointed travel agent in Rochester and was often referred to as Rochester’s “Mr. Travel.”

At the time of his death, Moore was associated with Carlson Wagonlit Travel. In 1960 he helped organize the Association of Independent Agencies, which serves southern Minnesota, northern Iowa and western Wisconsin, served as the organization’s executive secretary for 33 years and served on the board of the Travel Planners Program of Minnesota State Vocational Technical Colleges for 10 years.

HE was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and its chancel choir for more than 50 years, member of the American Legion, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a 50-year member of the Rochester Rotary Club, for which he served as sergeant-at-arms and had several years of perfect attendance. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America in both Charlotte and Rochester. He received a certificate for 6 years of national scouting and over 50 years of service to the scouting program in Rochester.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; one son, William F. (Dianne) of New Berlin, WS; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Louise Gates of Stuart, FL, and Ruth Jeanette Landes of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Services were Jan. 13 at the Vine Funeral Home, Rochester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America.

Ronald K. Moore

Ronald K. Moore, 86, of Charlotte, died Sunday, May 13, 2001 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility after an extended illness.

Mr. Moore was born Jan. 10, 1915 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Roy and Jessie (Hunt) Moore, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1987, coming from Modesto, Calif. He was a retired sales manager for the Interstate Bakers Corp. of Los Angeles, Calif., and had been a member of the Masonic Lodge while in California. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed boating, and camping with his motorhome.

He is survived by a daughter, Dorothy (Gary) Lobsinger of Charlotte; a son, Ronald Moore of California; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred Moore on Oct. 18, 1992; and a brother, Robert Moore.

At Mr. Moore’s prior request, cremation has taken place. Private services will be held. Inurnment of the cremains was at Gresham Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Optimist Club, P.O. Box 70, Charlotte, MI 48813. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
