Fredrick W. Janecke

Fredrick W. Janecke, age 90, died Friday, February 18, 1999. Mr. Janecke was born March 11, 1908 in Lansing, the son of Michael and Emilie (Komm) Janecke. He was a member of Emanuel First Lutheran Church in Lansing and has been a lifelong farmer in the Eaton Rapids area. Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Loraine, in 1997 and a daughter, Mary Lou Janecke.

Surviving are 5 daughters, Betty J. (Keith) Swathwood; Pat A. (Ray) Bodell, Nancy M. (Dan) Teapolt, Susan E. Hazelton, Linda D. (Barry) Crites; 4 sons, Robert E. (Linda) Janecke, Donald D. (Liz) Janecke, John Janecke, Paul R. (Sherry) Janecke; 27 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 22, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Daniel Buske officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the Emanuel Lutheran School or Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Fred W. Janecke.

Douglas Janousek

Douglas Janousek, 61, of Vermontville died Nov. 19, 1999 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.

Mr. Janousek was born in Vermontville, the son of Austin and Ruth (Briggs) Janousek Feb. 5, 1938. He served in the U.S. Army just after the Korean War and worked at REO in Lansing and Spartan Motors in Charlotte. He was president of the Sportsman Club, formerly known as the 650 Sportsman Club, and a district field representative for the Michigan United Conservation Clubs, environmental representative for UAW Local #650, and the CAP Council of Lansing. He enjoyed his family and hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lila (Midge); three daughters, Jackie Janousek of Charlotte, Cheri (Bruce) DeLine of Hastings, and Carmaine (Jody) Hodack of Vermontville; two sons, Lee (Tracy) Janousek of Charlotte and Joe Janousek of Vermontville of Vermontville; six grandchildren; his mother, Ruth Janousek; three sisters, Dawn Jones of Charlotte, Darlene (Stanley) Hosey of Vermontville and Rosella “Suzy” (Larry) Schulze of Charlotte; one brother, Terry (Emmy) Janousek of Las Vegas, Nev.; special friends, Pat Kersjes and Judi Lemon; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial services were Nov. 23 at the Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Nature Conservancy or National Wildlife Federation.

John Jenson

John Halger Jenson Jr., 92, of Wellsville, MO, formerly of Charlotte died April 13, 1999.

Mr. Jenson was born Sept. 7, 1906 in Chicago, Ill., the son of John and Cora (Watson) Jenson. He was a 1923 graduate of Lawton High School and a 1927 graduate of Michigan State University. He was an electrical wholesale salesman and had been a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlotte.

He is survived by one daughter, Jeanine Swantner of Montgomery City, MO; two granddaughters, Kimm (Michael) O’Conner and Kaye (Joseph) Sansoni, both of Fenton; one grandson, Kent (Nancy) Garn of St. Louis, MO; seven great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Reva Jenson of Buchanan; and adopted daughter, Jeri (Larry) Green; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorotha May (Tubbs) in 1988; his son-in-law, Kenneth Swantner; three sisters, Maria Playford, Cora Darlington, and Charlotte; and one brother, Bennett Jenson.

Services were April 16 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Don Craig officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Clayton Johnson

Clayton Johnson, 91, of Charlotte and formerly of Nashville and Middleville, died Monday, April 26, 1999 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte. He was born Oct. 23, 1907 in Nashville the son of Nevada and Addie (Lemley) Johnson.

Mr. Johnson graduated from Nashville High School, and married Marion Snow Aug. 31, 1935 in Angola, Indiana. She preceded him in death Jan. 5, 1989. He retired from Oldsmobile in Lansing in 1974 after 24 years of service. Previously he as a farmer, and worked at Rich Steel Co. in Battle Creek. He played semi-pro baseball with his brother, John Johnson, as well as many other sports. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his RV trailer.

He is survived by sons, Winston (Dianne) Johnson, of Charlotte, and Gregory Johnson of Charlotte; daughters, Deanna (Gerry) Becktel of Cloverdale, and Christine Johnson and her husband Larry Reynolds of Charlotte; grandchildren, Todd Becktel, Barbara Jeffery, Troy Becktel, Heath Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Deena Hollister; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wife, Marion; daughter, Marcella Jean Johnson; and brother, John Johnson.

Service and interment were held Saturday, May 1, at Lakeview Cemetery with Rev. Alan Mettler officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Putnam Library or Meals on Wheels.

Joan June Johnson

Joan June Johnson, age 59, of Eaton Rapids died Wednesday, October 20, 1999 at a Lansing hospital. She was born March 26, 1940 in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Joseph and Maxine (Jones) Berryhill. Mrs. Johnson was a former member of the Immanuel Baptist Church in Lansing and was a member of the Eaton Rapids Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for both churches. She was formerly employed in the kitchen at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. Preceding her in death were her parents; 2 brothers, Jimmy and Rick Berryhill.

Surviving are her husband of 41 years, James M. Johnson; 3 children, Terri (Brian) Stevenson of Eaton Rapids, Cherri (Brad) Milligan of Parma and Jimmy Johnson of Lansing; 7 grandchildren; 10 brothers and sisters, Patsy Tejkl, Bob Berryhill, Dave Berryhill, Ron Berryhill, Bonnie Gaffney, Diane McGillis, Debbie Weck, Kathy Flint, Barb Hicks and Linda Murrin; and many many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 23rd from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Floyd Hughes of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Lansing officiating. Interment followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Honorary casket bearer was Jimmy Johnson; active bearers were, Brian and Kyle Stevenson, Brad and Bradley Milligan, Bob Berryhill and Jim Davidson.

Mary Ellen Johnson

Mary Ellen Johnson, 63, of Lansing, died March 6, 1999.

Mrs. Johnson was born May 25, 1935 in Plattsmouth, Neb., the daughter of William and Margaret (Pace) McKinney.

Services are tomorrow, Monday, March 15, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Sigfrid Johnson

Sigfrid “Siggy” Johnson, 100, of Nashville, formerly of Lansing, died April 29, 1999 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.

Mr. Johnson was born Feb. 15, 1899 in Chicago, the son of Martin and Carolina (Anderson) Johnson. He graduated from Country School in Illinois in 1914 and grew up on a farm in the Gun Lake area. He moved to Lansing where he owned and operated a REO Motor Car agency/dealership for eight years. During World War II he was chief deputy sheriff for Ingham County and a used car dealer in Lansing for 45 years, retiring in 1962. He came to Nashville in 1966 when he married Beatrice Gill July 29, 1966 in Hastings. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge in Lansing, and an avid golfer.

He is survived by one son, Larry (Mildred) Johnson of Tallahassee, Fla.; one stepson, Gordon Gill of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Gary, Robin, Renee, Amber, Sheryl, and Deborah (Guppy); and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice on July 30, 1995; one brother; and two sisters.

Services were May 4 at the Nashville Baptist Church and included police escorts from various departments, including the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department.

Interment was in the Wilcox Cemetery, Nashville. Arrangements were made by Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville Baptist Church.

Charles Joseph

Charles Joseph Jr., 70, of Potterville died May 2, 1999.

Mr. Joseph was born July 3, 1928 in Detroit, the son of Charles Sr. and Ozelma (Carl) Joseph.

Mr. Joseph owned Carl’s Market in Potterville. He had been a sheriff’s department special deputy, one of Potterville’s first emergency medical technicians, played Santa Claus for many years, served as Village Marshall, was constable for Benton Township, a Potterville Civil Defense director, Eaton County deputy Civil Defense director, fire marshal for Benton Township and Potterville for many years, and a member of the Potterville Fire Department for over 50 years. In the early 1940s, Potterville and Benton Township had a pumper truck and a tanker truck. Chuck stated his fire fighting career as a high school junior, receiving first-aid training in 1958 and becoming an instructor in 1959. In 1962, when it became mandatory for all firemen and ambulance personnel to be trained in first aid, Chuck and his wife, Rita, carried out an extensive training program. Three heart attacks, starting in 1977, slowed him down some, but not completely. He still answered calls whenever possible, to direct traffic for the Potterville Fire Department; operated the radio; and took coffee and food to the scene of emergencies. In 1989 the fire department purchased a Laerdal Heart Start Defibrillator, which was used on Chuck in 1993.

He was active in Boy Scouts for over 50 years, a member of the Potterville United Methodist Church, and a life member of the Potterville Masonic Lodge. He had been a member of the Potterville Area Chamber of Commerce, Eaton County Humane Society, and served on the Potterville Board of Education and supported many community activities.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Rita; two daughters, Julie (James) Robertson of Potterville and Kathy Joseph of Colorado; one son, Dr. Charles Joseph of New Jersey; one daughter-in-law, Kate Joseph of New Jersey; five grandchildren; James C., Jeromy and Jacob Robertson and Samuel and Melanie Joseph; four great-grandchildren, Amanda, Alex, Eric, and Kyle; one sister, Yvonne Chapman of Elkhart, Ind.; one brother, Donald (Jeanette) Joseph of Nashville, Mich.; his mother-in-law, Clara French of Lake Odessa; and his beloved dog, Bingo.

Services were May 5, 1999, at the Potterville UMC with the Rev. Paul Bailey officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery near Potterville. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Potterville United Methodist Church, Benton Township Fire Department, or charity of ones choice. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Inc.

Francis “Frank” Julson

Francis “Frank” Julson, 57, of Harrison, formerly of Potterville, died Oct. 26, 1999 at a Gladwin hospital.

Mr. Julson was born Dec. 25, 1941 in Grand Forks, ND, a son of Malbert and Henrietta (Johnson) Julson. He was a retired Fisher Body employee, a Vietnam veteran and a member of the Harrison Eagles Aerie 3541.

He is survived by his wife, Laurel; one daughter, Jodie (Jonathan) Janssen of South Daytona, Fla.; three sons, Ron (Missy) and Larry (Julie), both of Potterville; and Ken (Marcie) of Charlotte; seven grandchildren; one sister, Verna (Bud) Grover of Norco, Calif.; and four brothers, Chuck (Mardell) Julson of Granbury, Texas, Dick (Sharon) Julson of Lewiston, Idaho, Don Julson of Lansing and Dennis (Liz) Julson of Mulliken.

Services were Oct. 29 at Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with the Rev. John Toth officiating.
